Made of Bakelite Krene (from the Union Carbide Company), this cool rain hat can double as a sun hat. Simply inflate it with air power and voilà a perfect chapeau that will tie beneath your chin.
Your hat will arrive folded - with instructions for inflating and deflating. We inflated only one of these and it was great - not even too, too odd! We tried to deflate the hat without reading the extremely well written instructions and were unsuccessful. After reading, we were able to refold the hat just as it arrived! Just imagine any instructions written that way today!
We are absolutely amazed at the quality of this plastic. Krene Bakelite items began hitting the American market around 1953, advertised to be absolutely the best plastic.
The explanatory tag in the display box reads:

These hats were sold sometime between 1953 and 1958. Some of us even remember seeing them on the beach.
