We love this particular little bisque figure. S/he is all covered up in wither clothing and is carrying a bag or satchel.

We think that these little dolls were created originally for setting up miniature scenes for railroads or Lilliput villages, but we are really not sure. Some of them have an original metal pick in the bottom - probably for positioning in your diorama or display. We prefer them without the picks and most stand on their own. But we've not changed any of them.

Each figurine was hand painted and the paint shows some wear. We're showing 3 samples so that you might see the differences. We love the true patina that only real time offers such pieces.

Each cold one measures about 1-1/2 inch tall by just over 1/2 inch wide and not quite 1/2 inch from front to back. When there are stems, they vary in length, most being about 1 inch.

These are lightweight, making them perfect for even altered art jewelry projects.

We expect that these are from the 1920s through 1940s, but we've not been able to find a date on any of them. Some are marked with their country of origin, Japan.

These have been dusted off, but the metal, if any, is rusty, so please be careful. We never clean any vintage or antique items completely so as to not ruin the value.

We've never seen anything like these before, so we are quite delighted to offer them to you. We're show you several in our photograph so that you might see the variation and the front and back. Please let us choose one for you.

Each of these fellows is sitting on a log and we cannot really interpret their activities. It appears that some might be cowboys (their hats suggest such) and others might be musicians, perhaps even playing the bagpipes. It is difficult to see the detail in the log, but it is quite nice for something so tiny and old.

Each of these tremendous little dolls is more interesting than the next. We had a hard time working once these arrived. We had to examine each and every one of them. They are called Frozen Charlotte Dolls or Frozen Charlotta Dolls. They were made in Germany years ago.

They appear to have have been manufactured as far back as the early 1850s. Their history is quite intriguing, as is their allure. Some are bisque, but most are made of glazed porcelain. They were known in Germany as Bathing Children (Badekinder) or Naked Babies (Nackfrosh).

Charlottes were named after a young Victorian girl who went out dancing with her beau. Against Mother's advice, she left without her coat and froze in the snow. This is the story of an old folksong called Fair Charlotte often attributed to William Lorenzo Carter.

The dolls were made from the 1850s through the early 20th century and sold for about a penny each in the United States. Children would dress them and were able to collect a few because of the nice price. In fact they were often called penny dolls.

Ours have been dug up in Germany near the original factories. These tiny dolls are almost perfect, but have a bit of damage, but not much. We have not cleaned them, so you can enjoy discovering the unique beauty of your own doll. Just use a mild soap gently with water.

If whole, these lovelies might sell for $125 to $300 each. These tiny ones measure from just under 1-1/4 inch to just under 1-1/2 inch high and each shows different breaks

Several of the dolls are in our illustration, but we do have more than the pictured ones.

Each of these characters appears to be Asian and to be carrying a drum or gong. Most of the drums are yellow and some of the gentlemen have a wire that might have held another object in the past. The wire goes through the figure from front to back and is easily removed and replace if you choose to do so. The color has worn from some of these more than others.

Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger proposed this thought experiment to demonstrate the apparent conflict between what quantum theory predicts on the microscopic level and what we observe on the macroscopic level: A cat is shut in a box with a 'diabolical device' that kills it or not, depending on whether a radioactive substance emits a particle in a given time triggering the device. After that time that cat is alive or dead. Therefore, the cat is both alive and dead simultaneously - a superposition of states.

It's important to know that this was  a thought experiment and that it was never really performed - at least by Schrodinger and his colleagues, Einstein, Podlosky and Rosen.

Whether or not the quantum question appeals to you, this little kitty puppet with his tongue hanging out, might just be the fun experiment you need for an evening!

We just couldn't stop smiling when we saw this vintage old stock baby doll - it's like a cartoon baby! Made from molded plastic, it features hand-painted hair facial features including large expressive eyes! Made of flexible plastic, we expect that these hail from the 1970s. Some of the faces are a bit out of shape when sitting on their own, but they are easily re-shaped.

There is an open back so you can change this into a doll mask if you like. Or use it to decorate cupcakes and the like. We have not cleaned these, as we never do more than dust vintage items, so as to not ruin the value or collectability. So if you decide to use them with food, be sure to wash them first.

Better still - they have sleepy eyes that close when they are lying down - really. When seated or standing, the pretty baby blue eyes are wide open.

Each baby measures just about 3 inches high when lying or standing - and about 1-1/4 inch from fingertip to fingertip. The head is about 3/4 inch from front to back.

All of the accents appear to be hand painted as some have darker hair than others. The eyes and lips are painted as well.

Refill Skeletons

We were only dreaming of faeries and mariposas and then we came across one: a dead fairy. Oh, now don't worry, s/he is still quite fey - still quite the fairy, but just no so alive.

The SilverCrow Dead Fairy (or, Day of the Dead Fairy, if you will) Kit has just about everything you need to create two of your own:

  • 2 Skeleton Dead Fairy Bodies

  • 2 Sets of Mariposa (Butterfly) Wings

  • 2 Tiny Rolls of Tulle for the Skirting

  • 2 Teensy Butterflies to Hold

  • 2 Teensy Flowers to Hold

  • Glitter Glue

  • 9 Stick-On Rhinestone Crystals

  • a Needle & Spool of Thread

The fairy body measures 2 inches high if s/he is standing. These are little plastic bodies and can be manipulated by bending the arms and legs and neck a bit if you're careful. You'll still need some adhesive and your own scissors, and of course, lots of imagination!

Each kit arrives with a portrait of our sample. (It's well known that it is impossible to photograph live faeries!)

The sample fairy pictured with the kit is not included. The color of the glitter glue, wings, tulle, flowers and teensy butterflies may differ.

Vintage Frozen Charlotta Doll

Scooping the last of the mud from the old carpenter's box, the archeologist felt a small ball of rough fabric. Carefully, he unrolled the wet black wool sock. In his fingers lay a tiny child-like figure made entirely of porcelain, absolutely perfect! For over 132 years, she had remained tucked in a corner surrounded by saws, mallets and chisels, waiting to be discovered! Only 2-1/2 inches tall, this Frozen Charlotte was pure white with black eyes and a bonnet painted upon her head - a remarkable treasure from the Great White Arabia. Perhaps the doll was a keepsake, a travelling companion for the long trip west, or a cherished memento from a loved one left far behind.

This little doll was reproduced for the Museum of the Steamboat Arabia - molded from an actual doll found in the steamboat's wreckage!

Frozen Charlottes (aka Frozen Charlottas) are small molded dolls that were popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries and were so named for a favorite American legend. Lovely Charlotte, anxiously anticipating the New Year's Eve Ball, settled into the open sleigh of her beloved Charlie. She refused her mother's offer of a woolen blanket for warmth, claiming it would wrinkle her gown. Gliding for miles across the snow under the starlit sky, the couple finally arrived at the ball - Charlie with an icy brow and Charlotte as a frozen corpse. Parents often used the story and the dolls to remind children of what can happen to those how disobey their parents.

In 1988, the Arabia, an 1850s steam powered paddlewheel boat, was rediscovered, with much of her precious cargo intact. By 1856, the Arabia was carrying passengers and cargo on the Missouri River, leaving St Louis every other week. Reroute to the frontier on September 5, 1856, a submerged walnut tree pierced the Arabia's hull, sinking her and 220 tons of precious cargo. Over time, the river changed course, leaving the steamer and her freight buried deep beneath a Kansas farm field. Today, thanks to remarkable excavation, conservation and perfection, artifacts from the Arabia bring the 1856 frontier to life.

How fascinating this doll is! Each is completely different from the next - some even have names painted on them! Made from papier mâché, our large Mexican cabaret (or Puta) doll measures about 17 inches when standing. However, she sits much more easily.

Her colorful clothing is accented with intricate artwork (usually flowers) and glitter jewelry highlights. The movable arms and legs are attached with thread and allow you to pose her in many different ways. We love sitting several of them together, as though a fiesta was waiting to happen!

Each is hand made and painted, so everyone is different. Although we have several colors, we're never sure which ones we'll get. If you request a special color, we'll do our best! Please let us choose a doll for you.

This is not a toy. Please ensure adult supervision for children.

Born on August 6, 1928, Andy Warhol died on February 22, 1987. Pop artist, filmmaker, writer, socialite and entrepreneur, Warhol's paintings of Campbell Soup cans and celebrities are some of the most famous images of the 1960s. Critics were scandalized by Warhol's open embrace of market culture, but Warhol didn't care, gladly attracting the limelight. In fact, some critics believe that if it were not for his visibility as a celebrity magnet, his artwork would not be as famous. We don't care - we love it either way!

Well, the great Pop Artist himself is now a finger puppet! We LOVE the shiny red jacket that matches his red glasses! He would be so proud. On your finger, he's a puppet; on your fridge, he's a magnet! Why not keep him on your workbench or table as inspiration - what a muse he might make!

So wise he is this old man, still walking after years of travail, trials and trails.

We think that these little fellows were created originally for setting up miniature scenes for railroads or Lilliput villages, but we are really not sure. Some of them have an original metal pick in the bottom - probably for positioning in your diorama or display. We prefer them without the picks and most stand on their own. But we've not changed any of them.

Each figurine was hand painted and the paint shows some wear. We're showing 2 samples so that you might see the differences. We love the true patina that only real time offers such pieces.

Each piper measures about 1-1/2 inch high by 5/8 inch wide and about 1/2 inch from front to back. When there are stems, they vary in length, most being about 3/4 inch.

Please let us choose one for you.

Mandela was released from prison in 1990, and became the first black president three years later.

More Magnets

The passionate, yet tumultuous marriage between Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera is legendary. Theirs was one of the most famous alliances between artists. His straying eye led Frida to take many lovers, male and female, including revolutionary Leon Trotsky.

Diego Rivera was among the greatest of the Mexican muralists that flourished after the country's revolution. Influenced by Cubism as well as pre-Columbian wall paintings, Rivera's works are characterized by his fervent belief in Marxism.

A Mexican painter deeply influenced by indigenous culture, Frida Kahlo suffered a series of physical traumas. She contracted polio at age 6, and at 19 sustained injuries in a bus accident from which she was plagued by extreme pain for the rest of her life. Drawing on her personal life, Kahlo's work is characterized by its stark portrayal of pain

Now you can create your own tumult on your fridge with these two great little magnets. Release your inner ethno-surrealist with Frida and paint a tiny leftist mural with Diego. Or, just enjoy knowing that they are together again, right in your own home!

Larger Frozen Charlottes

More Little People & Things

Each of these tremendous little dolls is more interesting than the next. We had a hard time working once these arrived. We had to examine each and every one of them. They are called Frozen Charlotte Dolls or Frozen Charlotta Dolls. They were made in Germany

These tiny ones measure from just under 1-1/4 inch to just under 1-1/2 inch high.

Several of the dolls are in our illustration, but we do have more than the pictured ones.

Of course these can be used for their original purpose - creating dolls, or, indeed, for repairing them. But, we also love odd things like these added to assemblages, memory boxes, nichos and ofrendas! What fun!

Shake things up with these fabulous maracas! Hand-painted in China, our Fickle Heart is irresistible! Each is skillfully made of papier mâché by talented artisans.

You'll get two for one in this delightful maraca. Our two-faced fickle heart smiles broadly - professing love - flip it over and the indecisive (or is it surprise?) face takes over. This delightful maraca is adorned with pink feathers and is just perfect!

Their intended use is obvious, but we know you'll have a clever way of using them - use one as a center of an assemblage or now you'll have a special head for a fantastic art doll.

Two maracas are shown to illustrate the two sides!

Our little pipers are playing all at once - and are frozen in time playing the bagpipes! How hard for them!

We're showing 3 samples so that you might see the differences. We love the true patina that only real time offers such pieces.

Each piper measures about 1-3/8 inch high by 1/2 inch wide and about 5/8 inch from front to back.

Please let us choose one for you.

Jesus has long been honored by many religions. Muslims see him as a prophet. Buddhists say he was enlightened. For a very special addition to your collage, art doll or special gift package, Oliver might just be the guy for you! Each face is molded and hand painted - so every face is unique and a bit different from his namesakes.

Add some abaca twine or other fiber as hair and, depending on the hairstyle, Oliver could easily become Olivia!

A flat back makes it great for attaching to journals, gift packages, boxes, walls, window trim, pictures, pottery, frames - you name it! S/he measures around 2-1/16 inches from top to bottom and about 1-3/4 inch from side to side. The profile is about 1/2 inch at the thickest.

We were only able to get a limited number of these as they were hand made by the artist - and then we lost track of the artist! We love the look because it appears as though the charm was originally made thousands of years ago and found in a treasure trove.

Measuring 7/8 long including the hanging loop - which runs from left to right at the top and 7/16 inch wide at the widest part of the fingers, this is quite a special charm.

We are showing two charms so that you might see the detail in the top of the hand as well as in the palm.

More Supplies for Art Dolls

This guy won a Donald Duck look-a-like contest in the early 1950s - or so he tell us. We can't be sure. But we are sure that he's been around that long. Doesn't he look like a 1950s kid's costume mask?

Hollow on the back and highly stylized, we've realized that his expression is just too happy for him to be The Donald.

He measures about 3-1/8 inches long by 2-1/8 inches wide and 1-1/2 inch from his beak to the back of his head.

He's made of an odd kind of plastic, that just might have some paper mixed in. His eyes, and mouth - er...beak - have been hand painted.

Our vintage, old store stock Monkey face has never been used. Made of pressed or molded fabric (just like our vintage masks), each is in superb condition. We're guessing these are from the 1950s or 1960s, but they certainly could be earlier than that.

The flesh colored fabric features wonderfully hand-painted details - completed with care and precision - but different enough from one to the next, that each one is subtly unique!

Each head measures 2-3/4 inches wide by 3-1/4 inch long (from tip of head to neck). The condition is excellent with the slightest touch of dustiness to the very outside rim.

Not only would the fellow's face be great as a doll head, but consider making it a mask for another doll!

These lovely Geisha are dressed in blue with touches of red and are each a little different from the next. Not just because they are hand painted, but because the stance is a bit different in each.

We're showing 3 samples so that you might see the differences. We love the true patina that only real time offers such pieces.

Each Geisha measures about 1-1/4 inch high by 1/4 inch wide and about 1/4 inch from front to back. When there are stems, they vary in length, most being about 7/8 inch. Some of these ladies also feature a hole right where their arms meet so that they might carry something in their arms.

Please let us choose one for you.
