Lid as a Dish Close-Up
Recycled Paper Bowl with Lid
See More Useful Décor
Adapting necessity to art, traditional basket-making techniques are used to make these wonderful little pots or bowls. Artisans use recycled posters from printing companies. First they make long flat strips of paper, dipped in glue - then dried. Then, after the strips dry, the artisans wet them again form them into useable shapes, like this little bowl with a lid. It is all held together with the glue as the strips are coiled. Sturdy household items are the result.
The brightly colored random patterns are derived from the shapes and the contents of the posters used, so you may see some printed words on yours, too.
We were particularly enchanted with this little piece as it is made of two pieces. You might use them together as intended, or, better yet, use the lid as a small dish for wrapped candies or the like.
The pot measures about 5 inches in diameter at the top and about 3 inches on the bottom. It stands a little over 3 inches high. The lid sits down in side the bowl, but if standing alone, it sits about 2 inches high.
Each bowl is different, not only because it is handmade, but, because the paper strips are never the same from item to item. So, please let SilverCrow choose one for you.

Small Sumi Ink Stick
Sumi ink has been made in the traditional fashion - from burnt wood - for more than 3,000 years. Asian artisans process the wood residue from burnt wood into solid sticks of ink in the same manner today - just a bit more quickly with modern equipment. The pine soot from pine or vegetable oils is mixed with animal or fish glue. The glue insures that the ink can be molded. It is then dried to form a well-shaped solid block which. To use the ink, it must be ground into a stone - and water added to it (usually with a Water Dropper).
Nothing is more special for creating the many subtle shades of black and grey, that characterizes traditional Sumi painting.
Even if you're not a Sumi artist, you might not be able to resist - this makes a perfect embellishment for a special Asian assemblage or collage.

3D Art Postcard - Hokusai Katsushika - The Great Wave
We love lenticulars - the layered paper and plastics that create a moving 3-dimensional effect. This wonderfully mailable post card features the familiar image of the Great Wave by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai who lived from 1760 to 1849.
He is quite famous for his wonderful wood-cut prints of the Ukiyo-e, pictures of the floating world - everyday life. His works seems to be more popular in the West than it has ever been in his homeland.
His striking image of the sea completed in this new lenticular form is simply spectacular - the movement is amazing. In fact the sea appears to transform into mountains, another of the artists favorite subjects. Although the transformation is hard to notice online, we're sure you'll be as awed by the images in person.

108 Buddhas on a Walnut
Carefully carved on this unopened walnut shell are the miniscule representations of 108 bald, sitting Buddhas. This amulet is often carried for good luck.
The number 108 is quite important in the Buddhist traditions. Buddhist malas consist of 108 beads. Bells are rung 108 times at the beginning of the new year for luck.
Because walnuts are natural, each of these is completely different from the next. But, all measure about 1-1/2 inch. The walnut is hand-carved with the nutmeat still inside. While the carver strove to carve 108 Buddhas, the the number may vary and may not reach the auspicious and sacred number. This does not make it any less lucky, and we're sure you'll enjoy counting them.

Yin-Yang Button Pin
More Pinback Buttons
The Yin Yang is a well known Taoist symbol, representing the balance of opposites in the universe. Without opposites, there is chaos and confusion. When opposites are equally present, there is clam.
There are many traditions regarding the exact definition, however, the philosophical vision without words, is most common - the design of the symbol itself implies calm.
Some traditions see one side as soft, the other hard - even opposites exist here. As some say the yin is soft and others say it is the yang. It has come to represent so many opposites, it almost does not matter which is which.
since nothing in nature is purely one way or purely the other, the symbol includes a small black spot in the white swirl, and a white spot in the black swirl. Yin-Yang is thought by the Taoists to be upset when humans intervene in nature and disrupt the balance.
Our pinback button measures about 1 inch in diameter.

Sterling Silver Om Namah Shivaya Bracelet
Also known as the 5-syllable mantra, Om Namah Shivaya, is written in Sanskrit on this stunning sterling silver cuff bracelet. Handmade by traditional artisans in the Himalayas, this bracelet has been fashioned in a time-honored manner of fine silver. Each bracelet arrives in a pouch that will help the silver resist varnish and a gift box.
The three Gods of Hindu mythology run the universe. According to such myth, the Brahma created the universe. The Vishnu preserves the universe. And Shiva, destroys the universe. In such destruction, Shiva represents the inner self (in other religions, the soul), which shall remain intact - even when the universe and all else ends.
Om Namah Shivaya is the mantra dedicated to Shiva. In bowing to Shiva, one bows to one's true self - making this a very powerful mantra. It is common understanding that if this mantra continually vibrates in one's heart, then there is no need to meditate, to practice yoga or to live an austere life. Because of the power of this mantra, it does not need special circumstances, positions, rituals or ceremonies. It is free from restriction and can be universally repeated by anyone from anywhere, at any time. As such, one shall be purified.
We are happy to offer this symbol of peace as a bracelet to be worn by anyone at any time - to be reminded of the powerful mantra.
