Each is made of cardboard and features a satiny fabric top with a touch of padding. You'll know that these were once red - just because of their shape and style. Now some of them have faded with the years, but they are ever so darling, too, just because of that! Each box is in good vintage condition, with some fading of the fabric and some discoloration of the original white lining inside box. There are some slight aging issues, but we love how that one makes each one special. Most are marked, Made in Japan and some have the original price (10¢ or 15¢) stamped on the bottom. Fine ladies secured their combs, brushes and other even their hairpins in elegant containers. With the advent of inexpensive plastics in the 1930s, vanity items like these became more readily available. We are fortunate to have a few of these special comb or trinket cases made of true celluloid. Some of our cases are hinged and others have slip off lids, but they all resemble the two in the illustration. Close-Up Real Cellophane Bags - Package of 10 Bags More Bags and Boxes More Green and Eco-Friendly Stuff There are lots of bags out there calling themselves *cello, making us think they are cellophane. Alas, most are high quality polypropylene - plastic - that imitates real cellophane! And, as plastic, the bags are made from petroleum and are not so renewable. These 4 by 6 inch bags are the real thing* - cellophane! Real natural cellophane is made from cellulose - which comes from wood. That makes cellophane a totally natural product which 100% compostable and makes very little environmental impact once made. (Of course production impacts the environment somewhat, but the final product hardly does at all). These are the bags that were used in the mid-20th century before plastic bags became the rage. We love the look and feel and how wonderfully old-fashioned they are. We package lots of SilverCrow products in these bags in many sizes. (We also use the polypropylene bags - we don't want to mislead you.) Cellophane is highly permeable - allowing moisture to pass through, rather than be trapped inside. This reduces condensation and subsequently reduces the risk of mold and mildew. But, what we really, really love is that crinkly sound it makes when you touch it! Just like bags so many years ago. It is filled almost all the way up with natural colored hand made paper. One side of the box has an opening so that it is easier to retrieve the paper from the box. The box is reusable after it's empty, too. The actual painting appears to be reverse glass painted, but we really didn't want to take it apart to check - it's way too nice the way it is! Close-Up Vintage Yankee Girl Box with Red & White Checks More Boxes and Bags More Ephemera More Smoking & the Like We love old boxes - to collect and especially for wrapping presents. This one is great fun for USA patriotic holidays (especially for New Yorkers). Originally designed to hold plug tobacco, the red and white checks made it quite noticeable amongst the other boxes in cigar cases. My grandfather had a bookstore years ago that also sold cigars, tobacco, stationery, toys, and a zillion other things. He always indicated that red drew the eyes to the product better than anything (I guess, of course, unless your buyer was colorblind!) The printing is all in dark blue, but we think it just might look great for Christmas as well. Plug tobacco is chewing tobacco that was made with molasses. The sweet and sticky molasses helped hold the tobacco together to form a sheet - sort of like a fruit roll! The large sheets were cut into smaller sheets called *plugs* and wrapped with finer tobacco. The plug connoisseur would then either cut off, or more likely, bite off a piece to chew. Your box will arrive flat, but, with a little ingenuity, you should be able to assemble it easily. This lead us to believe it was the technique that allowed the average person to create something lovely from a common wooden article. It reminds us of a sarcophagus or other funeral-related containers that you might find in an ancient pyramid. The image of the crocodile is also useful as a handle to remove the lid.
