The knots are just so uniform and elegant! The open loops will allow you to add additional charms if you choose. It measures 26 inches and is knotted without a clasp - but the end knot is easy to untie, so you might lengthen it with a chain if you choose. We prefer to just slip it over our heads (please take off your glasses first!). The beads are white porcelain with traditional butterflies, flowers or trees. Each necklace is different and features at least four beads. Because of the open knotting at the bottom, it is also easy to add an enhancer that you make yourself - or to use this as a bookmark! As the war progressed, more and more hard money disappeared as people began to hoard coins. In 1862, the U. S. Government began issuing "Greenbacks" (as Federal currency became called) to supplement the states' paper money. Greenbacks were soon in widespread use, amounting to more than half of the currency in circulation. Fractional currency ("paper coin") also became prominently used. The Federal government passed strict banking laws in 1863: these laws along with heavy taxes soon caused most of the paper money of the private banks to disappear.
