Despite the unusual characteristics that set them apart of humans, vampires are not necessarily the evil and bloodthirsty monsters as they are sometimes portrayed. The teenaged vampires featured here are just like most of us. They are trying to fin in at school, going on dates and yet they are still true to their Vampire heritage.

Vampires of today don't just want blood - they crave the friendship and romance of the mortals who live by day, too! These 16 stained glass images portray hip, young party animals from the dark side and the dark of night in dramatic, contemporary situations: dancing in clubs, rocking with guitars, driving sleek sports cars, haunting city streets by night and more. Each page is perforated for easy removal and display.

You can color the illustrations with crayon, felt-tip pen, acrylic, watercolor, tempera or oil paint. If you mix your coloring methods, you will get a more interesting effect. You can color one side or both to produce rich combinations. If you color only one side, face the colored side on a window facing outdoors to produce a crisper outline.

More Celtic, Irish & St Patrick's Day

The designs in Celtic illuminated manuscripts represent a distinctive fusion of native Irish, Germanic and Near Eastern motifs. Graphic artist Ed Sibbett has brilliantly captured the intricacy and beauty of this original art tradition in 37 drawings based on illustrations in the Book of Durrow, the Gospels of St. Willibrord and the illustrious Book of Kells.

Among the motifs are the characteristic Celtic interlacings, geometric animal combinations and decorative initials, plus powerful ornaments and symbolic abstractions of animals and people. A portrait of St. Matthew appears as a center spread, not backed up, that may be taken out and framed. Captions identify the source of each picture and explain the iconography.

The publisher's note at the beginning of the book allows the student of Celtic art a great explanation of origins and meanings.

Miró Lithographs (Coloring Book?)

Close-Up

Miró Lithographs (Coloring Book)

Joan Miró's line recalls Picasso's in clarity and power; the Catalan's "plastic aggressiveness" led him, as it did his Andalusian friend, to bold, successful experiment and innovation in ceramics, sculpture and printmaking, especially lithography. The lithographic print medium suited and encouraged the artist's life-long, often radical obsession with stripping art to the marrow. The 40 plates reproduced here sample the pith of his lithographic production - a series produced in 1944, full of the eerie images and roll distortion he had sought on canvas for decades.

Although this was not designed as a coloring book, the black and white illustrations offer the amateur artist an opportunity to re-illustrate Miró. Of course, they can be admired and framed for the striking art that they are - in black and white.

For us the alphabet is usually a means of communications, but in the Middle Ages it was one of the great vehicles for amusement and instruction, as well as beauty. Fanciful devices, symbolic elements, floral beauty, narrative cartoons, and a world of other embellishments worked into initial letters both delighted and improved the medieval mind.

Theodore Menten, one of New York's foremost designers, has selected and rendered 50 fine medieval initials. They range from beautiful Celtic floral interlacements to biblical scenes, knights, martyrdoms, grotesque animals, portraits, scenes of play and war and much else from treasured medieval manuscripts. The designs are permission-free, which means they are available for use in a wide variety of crafts and graphic arts projects.

Many first encounters with great poems could be made even more satisfying and memorable given the chance to add original color to the poetic event. Here is the chance - 17 classic poems by 11 distinguished poets, suggestively embellished for coloring by Susan Gaber. A total of 40 drawings complement poems by Christina Rossetti, Emily Dickenson, Lewis Carroll, Gelett Burgess, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edward Lear, Leigh Hunt, Eugene Field, Hughes Mearns and two anonymous bards. Few children early exposed to them ever forget Who Has Seen the Wind or Wynken, Blynken and Nod; all can now gild and preserve their memories in almost any coloring medium in this handsome, durable coloring book.

The owl and the Pussy-Cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat. . .

A child hearing Lear's poem for the first time cannot fail to form an image of this boat hued in the most vivid rich pea-green.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood
And burbled as it came!

Carroll's Jabberwocky may be seen as well as heard by a child, in colors as imaginative as it's verbal excitement.

Color Your Own Gauguin Paintings

Widely regards as one of the founding figures of modern art, French painter, sculptor and printmaker Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) is also considered on of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists. A pioneer in stressing the simple and the primitive in art, he produced works during his South Sea period that were richly colored and subtly modeled - a style that gradually emerged from the flat-contoured figures of his Breton interlude.

For this coloring book, illustrator Marty Noble has prepared black-and-white line renderings of 30 of Gauguin's finest paintings. Colorists can refer to the full-color reproductions of the actual paintings (shown on the covers) or add their own hues to each pictures. Among them are:

Tahitian Landscape Landscape Near Arles
Spirit of the Dead Watching Breton Girls Dancing, Pont-Aven
The Moon and the Earth Reverie
Woman Holding a Fruit Self-Portrait with Palette
Still Life with Three Puppies The White Horse
The Cellist Woman with a Mango
