Flower Skull Bead

Each of these beads has been created by hand and then hand finished. Most of the skeleton has been finished in bisque (a matte textural finish). Little bits of shiny glaze have been added in white and in colors on the 3-dimensional accented parts (like the flowers). The eye sockets have been darkened, the teeth painted in and glazed and little filigree strokes have been added.

Every bead is hand painted and fired for a striking appearance. As you can see from the illustration, no two are painted the same, so please let us choose one for you. Colors vary, so we cannot promise a certain color, but if you choose to specify a color, we will try to honor your request. Each order brings us different colors, so our selection often varies.

There are so very many ways to find a pet. But what we love most is when our pets rescue us. There are rescue groups for just about every purebred dog and the animal shelters rescue so many other dogs of the Heinz-57 variety. But, we believe that the dogs rescue us - not the other way around.

Dolly, our Dalmatian, and Bo-Bo Duke and Flossie, our retired racing greyhounds have rescued us more than once. Because our lives are so very much more hectic with them around, we forget about our troubles - what more could anyone ask?!

This charm measures just a touch over 3/4 inch in diameter and features a nice sized hole at the top for attaching to just about anything - from a collar, to a bracelet, a cell phone or even a zipper.

Each of these diamond beads features a molded image that genuinely resembles a carved bead with a featured dragon. Each bead is hand made in the modern tradition of cinnabar, evoking the spirit of centuries-past Asian artisans' work.

These beads are reversible and the stringing hole is about 1mm. These make a stunning pair of earrings, especially when paired with black crystals and golden findings. Each bead measures about 1/2 inch square by about 1/4 inch thick. The dragon is a popular symbol in Asian culture, conjuring the spirit of masculine vigor and power. It is also fifth sign in Chinese zodiac.

True cinnabar is deadly, made of red mercuric sulfide. [If, by the way, you have any vintage or antique cinnabar, be sure to treat it with care and do not wear it against your skin. Removable charms like these from the Victor Flores collections of QT Charms have been trendy since 2003 when they were originally introduced. We were particularly taken by the clarity of the image in this removable charm featuring San Simon.

Some call him the patron saint of gamblers, smokers and drunkards. Because of this, he is still worshiped in many Guatemalan villages with offerings of tobacco, alcohol, Coca-Cola and tropical plants. San Simon is pictured smoking and holding a bottle of liquor, beer or wine. He is not recognized as a saint by the Catholic church.

The entire charm from top to bottom, including the clasp, measures just over1-1/2 inch and from side to side, it measure 1/2 inch. The image portion of the charm measures 1 inch.

Our little tins contain over 25 beads made of clay to resemble true wampum. Wampum beads are usually created from the quahog shell and are very dear. These allow you a similar look at a much lower price. Created by artists who studied true wampum, the beads range from white to off-white to purple with white striping and pure purple. Each tin contains a random mix. of over 25 beads.

Because each bead is handmade, each is unique, just like the originals. The variegated coloring, in both the purple and white, is very much like the quahog and whelk shells from which true wampum beads are created. Each bead is about 10mm long and about 5mm in diameter. Use these with your regular stringing wire or silk, or use the traditional single-ply (imitation) sinew.

These beads are not Native American Indian produced, a Native American Indian product or the product of a particular Native American Indian, Native American Indian Tribe or Native American Indian Arts and Crafts Organization.

We love vintage. We love beads. We love greyhounds. So, how fun is this little bead? It was sold to us as glass, and we think it really is. But, we must be honest and let you know that one of us thinks it's plastic.

The little bead is cream colored and includes aging to accentuate the greyhound's face. This aging or patina is a dark, dark grey and really highlights those beautiful greyhound ears.

The image is pretty much the same on the other side, but some of these beads really have one side better than the other (don't we all).

Each bead measures 15mm from tip of snout to back of head and 12mm from his neck to the top of his head.

The beading hole runs from his the tip of his nose to the lower back corner of his neck.

Polished Black Volcano Cube Bead fashioned from Natural Lava

Basalt is an igneous (now, remember your Geology Class) rock formed when a volcano erupts. These gorgeous natural lava cube beads are created from a milk chocolaty or grey stone, then they are waxed for preservation and to smooth them. Natural basalt is rough to the touch. Once the stone is waxed, it appears to be black, but is probably more like an extremely dark grey.

Each bead is completely different from the next due its natural origins. There are visible holes and bubbles that create a superb tactile sensation. Jewelry made from these beads will be touched a lot.

Each cube measures 14mm on each side. The drilling is from corner to opposite corner on the diagonal, so this makes the length from 17 mm to 19 mm.

Mermaids, or sirens, have been signs of the human-animal connection. At once we humans are a part of the animal world and so very different from it. Mermaids give us a sense of freedom from real world troubles.

No two are painted exactly the same and fish tail color differs, as does some of the decoration. Each little mermaid holds a tiny flower in her hands, too.

Originally sold in the 5 and 10 cent stores back in the 1920s and 1930s, this very special pressed glass charm was made in Japan. It measures about 5/8 inch long (not including to little metal loop) and about 3/8 inch wide.

The color in the glass is slightly variegated, but the main color of each charm is red. Even the string is original (the color of the string may vary from the one pictured).

These are new old stock - never used. We even found them in the original box marked Made in Japan. These were manufactured as a novelty - perhaps for a little girl's charm bracelet, so please allow for some variability.

We are great fans of anything handmade and this charm is just that. Rather than a bouquet of flowers, consider buying your friend, or, of course yourself, these everlasting miniature flowers sealed in resin and set in sterling silver. They'll last a lifetime.

The horticulture is called flores pequeñas (small flowers in Spanish). Along the lines of the Japanese bonsai, these flowers are still the same as their larger counterparts - just more dainty. The flowers are harvested and arranged in pleasing motifs and then cast in resin to preserve them.

Democrats, zoologists and animal lovers will adore this lovable little donkey with his perky ears and friendly expression. The vintage charm itself is ivory colored so you could really paint it if you like.

Whether our donkey is a jack (male) or jenny (female), it is so very sweet. Donkeys were endeared to Jesus Christ, who was often pictured riding one. Although they are work animals, many of them are treated as pets. Other religions are not as fond of the animal. Considering that the population of donkeys has grown tremendously over the last few years, we know they are hardy animals and are willing to please. Thomas Nast created a cartoon declaring the donkey to represent the Democratic political party in the USA (he also declared the elephant to represent the Republicans).

In the small village of Pomaire, Chile, it is believed that Chanchitos, little pigs, bring good luck. Three-legged Chanchitos, like this little bead or charm, are especially fortunate and are traditionally given to friends and family as a token of goodwill and love.

The traditional Christmas Carol is said to have religious meaning, each line indicating something about the Christian religion and its traditions. For example, the two turtle doves are said to represent the Old and New Testaments; the doves being symbols of peace and the peacefulness of the Bible's word. This interpretation has been all but forgotten, and the song has come to represent the spirit of generosity at yuletide.

These great little old-stock mechanical turtles arrived after a long hibernation in storage. Meant for the vending machines of the 1960s, these little fellows have a wiggly tail and head. They were probably only a penny (or at most a nickel) way back when a small coin could get a ton of loot for kids who knew where to look!

These are in great condition for their age, but be careful with them because they certainly weren't designed to last. There is a little loop hole on the bottom of each - so you can even turn one into a charm.

We've crated each one in a tiny reusable plastic case to protect him on his way to you. These are in assorted colors only - some are two-tone (head and tail one color and shell another) and some are all one color. There are so many variations, please let SilverCrow choose one for you.

Saint Anthony is the patron of those who have lost things or are lost themselves. So, of course, he is quite dear to us. This lovely charm is a plastic intaglio. Although the image is not really incised beneath the surface, it certainly appears to be. The aurora borealis background is enhanced by the silvery foil on the reverse. There is a small hole at top for creating a charm.

Genuine Quahog Shell

Just the word wampum conjures magical thoughts of long ago. Made from the shell of the quahog clam, wampum was used in trading and ornamentation by the Native Americans and early European traders and settlers in the Americas. The inside of the shells feature gorgeous purple and ivory or white stripings and solids. The purple stripes are indications of the growth of the shell.

Beads made from the purple shell are called suckauhock and were worth twice as much as the ivory or white beads, called wompampeage. We find it quite interesting that the species name for the quahog is the Latin mercinaria mercinaria, which is the root of the word mercenary (one who acts or works for merely reward or money).

The Narragansett Tribes in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas were the purveyors of the quahog shells and the beads and other adornments made from them.

We are proud to offer these special tube beads made in the traditional manner by Native Americans and non-Native Americans alike. The beads measure approximately 10mm long by 4mm in diameter and have slim stringing hole that works well with traditional and modern stringing materials.

Of course, when we're not sure what kind of bird is in a component or picture, we automatically assume it to be a crow. That's what we did with this bone component. It has been hand-finished and decorated with petroglyph or cave drawing of a bird and its tracks.

Each of these is slightly different as natural materials such as bone feature variation as a part of their charm. Each measures approximately 35mm wide (just less than 1-1/2 inch). The image of the bird and its tracks is carved into the bone piece an then darkened for emphasis.

This teeny little rose cabochon is a pale blue and full of detail - especially for its size - only 8 mm in diameter. Made of molded plastic in the mid 20th century, this is truly a great find.! Cabochons like these are becoming harder and harder to find, so we're always pleased when we can find them.

Each tiny rose measures about 7 mm in diameter and about 3 mm high. They are flat-backed for easy gluing. Make a quick pair of earrings buy gluing posts to the back, or use it in a plastic collage. There are so very many possibilities!

Plastic and composition pieces were major components in jewelry in the mid-20th century. Probably beginning around the 1930s and 1940s. They were popularized by Hollywood heroines and continue to be popular for their stylized design and kitschy colors.

This sweet plastic (or celluloid) lacy heart pendant is exceptionally beautiful in its ivory color. Across the middle, in script, is written,

Sweetheart

This is probably from the late 1950s or early 1960s. There is a top hole if you care to attach a jump ring for hanging, or just use the opening in the heart itself. The front of the cabochon is loaded with detail - it almost looks like real lace! The heart measures approximately 1-3/4 by 1-13/16 inch.

These delicate yet strong natural beetle wings are from the Thai Emerald Beetle (sternaceras echisinata/acquisagnata). For years they have been used traditionally as jewelry and ornament. The wing is curved slightly toward the back, just as on the beetle. The beetles die after reproducing, and the Hill Tribes in the northern forests of Thailand consider them good luck and wear them in many manners.

Their natural iridescent color is just tremendous. Each one has a small hole in the wider end, ready to use in your project. Because these are so lightweight, they make wonderful earring components. While this is not really a milagro, it resembles one. Double eye milagros generally represent a connection to the popular Santa Lucia, who suffered blindness while being executed. In the end God restored her eyesight.

The single eye might also venerate St Lucy, but more likely, it represents the spirits watching over us. When added to the frame of a picture of a departed one, the eye acts as an angel's eye - watching over the spirit of the beloved ancestor. It may have some connection to the evil eye talismans, but this is not certain.

Venus de Milo is also known as Aphrodite of Milos. She is an ancient Greek statue - in fact, one of the most recognizable sculptures in the world. Not too much is known of this glorious piece of art. Since it was found in the late 1800s, it has been believed that she is Venus (Roman) or Aphrodite (Greek).

Made of marble, she is slightly larger than life at 6-3/4 feet high. Her arms are missing as is her base. On display in the Louvre in Paris, there is much controversy over the sculptor, but it is thought to be Alexandros of Antioch because of an inscription on the her now missing plinth.

Also known as Maximon, Hermano San Simon is known both as a saint and as a representation of a pre-Columbian Mayan god of the underworld. He is generally represented in 20th century clothing, with a wide-brimmed hat. He is known to represent male power, balancing a moneybag, holding a flag and holding coins in his open hand.

His feast day is at the beginning of the rainy season in South America, and so he is often associated with fertility. He is thought to bring rain and fertility.

Some even call him the patron saint of gamblers, smokers and drunkards. Because of this, he is still worshiped in many Guatemalan villages with offerings of tobacco, alcohol, Coca-Cola and tropical plants. San Simon is pictured smoking and holding a bottle of liquor, beer or wine.

He is thought to wealth and worldly success to those who venerate him, so he is certainly not a traditional saint!

Mini Clock Cabochon Component

So often our artwork or card making calls for a component representing time, either specifically or in representing time together, forgotten (or remembered) times, or that some moments are timeless.

Our tiny clock face component is a perfect addition for those projects. The numbers are Roman numerals, and the time is set at the classic 12 minutes after 10 (morning or night matters not). The face also bears the inscriptions

QUARTZ

and

Paris

on the face. Of course, it is not a quartz clock and time stands still on the face of it, but for special projects you may find it just the right thing!

These little skulls coordinate nicely with with our other ceramic skull beads (mini, small & large). They resemble sugar skulls and the large painted papier mâché skulls that are so popular for the Day of the Dead. Each bead is hand painted and fired for a striking appearance.

The stringing hole is from side to side at the upper skull and will accommodate a slightly larger cord as well as standard stringing materials

No two are painted exactly the same, so please let us choose one for you.
