Vintage Hair Pins

More Clips and Such
Made by Gayla, these black metal HOLD-BOB Hair pins are The New Better Hair Pin. Distributed by Gaylord Products, Inc of Chicago, this is a full box of pins (with one on the outside, too). We've not counted them because we didn't want to open the 2-1/8 by 1-1/4 inch box to find out as these are in such great condition!
The top of the box features an extra rounded flap that advertises:
FOR THE PERFECT HAIRDRESS
The top flap indicates a copyright in 1945. This is a fun product for anyone who loves hair-related items. These are not your everyday bobby-pin. One of us used to practice putting her hair up in a twist with only one hair pin - then, when she removed it and shook her head, she imagined herself as a 1940s movie star!
In fact, they have many uses - use one or two to create a French twist with long hair; use one to maneuver something tiny out of a tight spot; glue a rhinestone to the rounded end and make a special decorative pin for your hair. We think you might even create some new use for your collage or assemblage.

Pouch of Iron Pyrite - Fool's Gold
More Naturals
Iron Pyrite is a crystal that usually forms as a cube with striations on each face, or side. Sometimes it is found in larger pieces and as course granules. But, it is usually found in little nuggets, just like gold. As a matter of fact, it is often found near gold deposits. Because of its golden color and proximity the the real thing, it is often mistaken for the much more valuable gold. So, it is known as Fool's Gold.
Its brassy yellow color might resemble gold, but its other physical properties are very different. Pyrite is harder, less dense, and more brittle than gold. If you strike it with steel, it produces a spark. It leaves a greenish-black streak while gold leaves a golden-yellow one. Because it is often found near gold (and copper) deposits, if you find some, you may be nearing a deposit of the real thing!
Iron pyrite is used for its high sulfur content and is mined for that reason worldwide, as it is quite common.
Our little muslin pouch holds nuggets Fool's Gold to collect or use in your artwork or school project.

yARTstick - 2000 years of Painting on 2000 MM
More Tools
More Collage, Assemblage & Altered Art
By the running meter - the yARTstick presents, in four-color prints, highlights of 2,000 years of painting history. It allows you to tell at a glance that though the themes have barely changed, their manifestations certainly have. This wooden ruler features illustrations and a measuring stick in centimeters and millimeters.
On the yARTstick, the history of painting of the last 2000 years is depicted in 58 selected pictures. The selection process has yielded a mixture of world famous as well as lesser known motifs, which together express the most important themes, techniques and temperaments. The line of images illustrates the development through the centuries: From Roman funeral art and mosaics in the first centuries AD, through works of Islamic, Chinese and Mayan art, into the Renaissance and on to the modern era. Details of eyes and hands are recurring motifs throughout the two millenniums.
On one side of the yARTstick, folding ruler are the pictures. On the flip side, where the 2,000 years of painting history are divided into 2000 mm, the individual works of art are placed in their historical context and referenced according to the period and the artist, the title of the work, the technique used, the year of the work's creation and the country of origin. If the work is immobile, the city where it is located is also named.

Optical Calcite
Believe it or not, calcite is the most common mineral next to quartz. But optical calcite - now, thi is special, and, of course, less common. It is much like a rectangle - but, not quite - it looks as thought it were stretched. Each stone is clear with a special icy luster.
Now the fun comes when you place an object behind it - the object will appear to be double! This is because rent indices of refraction of light that defines optical calcite. This stone is sometimes called a TV Stone because of the refracting nature.
Optical instruments often feature flawless specimens of optical calcite. Of course, the pieces we're offering are not flawless, but we're sure each piece will generate lots of fun and conversation! Pieces measure from 1/2 to 1 inch on each side.

Reckitt's Crown Blue Bluing Squares for Laundry and Art
For centuries, bluing has been used to disguise the yellowing or tell-tale grey in white cotton clothes - long before today's synthetic laundry additives! This was used in "the wash" (hand washing) - not in a modern washing machine. Colored with ultramarine, imported from France, this was a wondrous find for anyone wanting their clothes and linens to appear bright white, including royalty. It is safe to use, made of the coloring mixed with some washing soda to stabilize the square.
To use the bluing in your hand wash, is is usually placed in a muslin or other cloth bag, or simply wrapped and tied in a piece of cloth, so that the bluing doesn't directly touch the fabric of your clothing and linens.
Bluing has also replaced the original toxic bluestone in magical spells as it has the same gloriously bright blue color - and because it is safe!
Now, here's the fun part, try using this little square in your artwork. You'll have to experiment - use it to whiten, to blue, pulverize it and use as a pigment. We could go on and on - but we think it best to just to play with it in your studio.
Each square is approximately 1 by 1 by 1/2 inch. Instructions are printed on each square:
Wrap Blue in cloth. Stir while squeezing the Blue in the last rinsing water. Dip articles separately for a short time; keep them moving.

BLACK Mica Glitter Flakes
Natural Mica
This is the really neat old-fashioned, original glitter that was used for holiday decorations of all types since the end of the 19th century. The white form of mica glitter is usually used to imitate snow or to add an iridescent glittery effect. We can only imagine what you might be able to create with BLACK MICA!
Mix mica with paint, ink, glue, any artistic media. Sprinkle it on your holiday decorations. Grind it. Mix it with a tiny amount of any powdered pigment (including the cost-effective tempera pigment) to give it color. Experiment. Have fun!
This wonderful mica comes packaged in a convenient zipper bag in an old-timey box that measures 4-5/8 by 1-1/2 by 6 inches. So, you'll have plenty for lots of projects. For Hallowe'en, gothic and other projects with a black or midnight theme, our Black Mica might be just perfect!

Vintage World War II US Army Overseas Service Stripes
More USA Items
Service stripes are also known as hash marks or bars in the US military. They are presented to enlisted service members to denote length of service. Each of these bars (or stripes) were used to commemorate 6 months of overseas service during World War II.
These authentic gold stripes are unused and backed with buckram, commonly used to stabilize the felt cloth for embroidery. The felted material is what appears to us to be an army green/brown over-dyed wool.
We were fortunate to obtain a length of them, so we will cut them to order. All stripes you order will be in one piece as pictured in the illustration.
Five stripes are illustrated above, denoting 2-1/2 years of overseas duty. These were awarded in recognition of time served, regardless of the type of service. A soldier need not have served in actual combat to receive stripes.

Vintage Medicine Bottle with Cork
More Bottles & Other Vessels
How very delighted we were to have found a box full of these wonderful bottles. Each measures 4-1/4 inches high by 1-3/4 inch wide and 7/8 inch from front to back. The top lip boasts a spout. In fact, on the bottom of the bottle, the molded glass reads:
NON DRIP REG USA
and in a little pennant triangle logo, the company name:
PERFCO
The back of the bottle is softly rounded and the the front is flattened, so that you can easily apply a label, if you like. At the top of the label area are molded characters. These vary from bottle to bottle. The illustrated bottle reads:
3 I I
There were no corks in the bottles when we found them, but we thought we'd add one for a nice touch. You can certainly easily remove the cork, if you choose.
These would be great for homemade concoctions, assemblage artwork or whatever your imagination provides. Consider adding beeswax or sealing wax to the cork for a medieval feel!

Vintage Big Brother Overalls Snap Front
How fun is this? It's well past 1984, and many of George Orwell's observations are real today. Big Brother has become synonymous with someone watching over us! Of course, you might have a older brother of whom you are quite fond. In either case, these great little snap fronts are vintage and will add to a package wrapping or your artwork.
They measure 5/8-inch in diameter and are made of copper and steel. These are the front part of the snap meant for overalls. From a 90+ woman in Ohio, whose husband worked at a local company known for making overalls in the 1950s. there are several references in 1984 to overalls, but we're not sure if the book was the inspiration for these or not (the book was published in 1949).

Customers would cut, or even bite off, a piece of the plug to chew.

Vintage Dennison Coin Mailing Card No. 1 (Green)
They must have been simpler times, indeed, when coins could be easily mailed with no threat of pilfering. These Army drab green coin cards were used for paying for merchandise through the mail. Many people did not have checking accounts - indeed, some did not trust banks - some still don't. The Dennison company was well known for making this type of utilitarian item. The address area includes Zip Code, so that should help identify the era.
The card measures 5 inches by 3 inches (with the flap closed). The coin holder is made of cardboard and the backing and flap are made of sturdy paper.
This is labeled COIN MAILING CARD NO. 1 and it was created to send US$1.04 (1 half-dollar, 1 quarter, 2 dimes, 1 nickel and 4 pennies. The blank top was available for advertising or a rubber-stamped company name. The instructions are beneath the coin circles and address lines:
INSERT COINS, STICK FLAP SECURELY AND FILL IN NAME AND ADDRESS
The flap just covers the coins, allowing the name and address to show below it once sealed. Of course the coin card makes a great collectible, or use it for its purpose. But, you might also want to alter it and use each of the circles as a frame for a thought or a photo or what have you?

These fantastic projects come from Krylon, the largest manufacturer of spray paint in the world and a brand favored by hobbyists for its acid-free, archival quality. You'll will first learn the art of creating your own specialty papers with such simple skills as marbling, rubber-stamping, and stenciling, and then use those custom papers to produce scrapbook pages; mini-books; and embellished cards, bags, and tags.
Then, apply what you've learned and try altered art techniques to make bottles, boxes, and purses, or adorn home décor items such as trays, frames, and mirrors. It’s fun and easy!
This fun 128-page jacketed hardcover measures about 10 by 8-3/4 inches.

Small Metal Stamping - Moon Slice
More Collage and Assemblage (including stampings)
There are so many possibilities with these wonderful metal stampings. The entire piece measures about 2-1/8 by 2-1/2 inches - the image measures 7/8 by 1-1/8 inch. The stamping can be trimmed with scissors (if you don't care about the scissors too much), but metal cutters might be a better choice. Or, use the entire piece. They are also fantastic for your collages and assemblages - to glue on or inlay. We think these to be made of tin, but they just might be aluminum.

Lenten Coin Card
This Lenten Offering Card is still especially just right for sacrificing - if only a quarter a day. There is a slot for a quarter for each day beginning Ash Wednesday all the way through to Maundy Thursday. With this small sacrifice, one will have saved $9.50 - one quarter at a time! There is also a slot at the end for currency or a check.
Although this is perfect for its original intention. We also think it would be great if alerted or collaged and the collection were for any worthy cause. The inexpensive price makes them affordable for any use. It measures 6-3/4 by 11 inches when open; 6-3/4 by 5-1/2 when folded closed.

Most of today's rings are plastic or resin. Buy several and start a vintage game of your own. Or use one as the basis of your art - we just know you'll think of a thousand ways to use or display these lovely remnants of Americana from a simpler time.
Sizes and colors vary slightly due to wear and type of wood. Most measure between 2-1/4 to 2-5/8 inches outside diameter. Several rings shown for illustration only.

Rusted Tin Wire
Just the thing for those primitive style art or craft projects, this rusted-style wire appears to have been sitting outside in all kinds of weather for decades. Alas, it was aged chemically, so you won't risk losing your momentum over several years as you wait. With 30 feet, you'll be able to find quite a few uses for this. And, if you can't, it actually looks pretty nice just as is when you receive it.
Price: $1.39 Roll of 30 ft

Vintage Hand-Tied Fly Fishing Fly on hook Hook
The art of tying fly fishing flies and lures has long been respected and enjoyed by sporting fishers worldwide. We were lucky enough to find a group of vintage flies that were hand-tied and made with scrupulous attention to detail. While all are similar, colors and materials vary. What fun to add this to a fishing vacation memory box or artwork for a fishing enthusiast!
Since we are not sure what fish this would lure, we can't suggest it for a specific application other than artwork, but we're pretty sure a fly fisher might enjoy one tied to the top of a gift!
