Special SilverCrow Beaded Sugar Skull Charm with Hand-Painted Accents
More Charms
We made these little charms from hand-painted ceramic Sugar Skull Beads and included them in our SilverCrow Day of the Dead Bracelet Kit. We've gotten so many requests for them that we just had to make some to offer to you.
These are created from handmade beads from Peru that have been hand painted, then we created a loop of beads to change it into a charm! The bead measures about 3/4 inch high by 1/2 inch wide. The loop makes it about 1 inch high (give or take a few millimeters).
Each one is completely different from the next due to the selection of the beads and the handmade nature of the charm. We're showing 3 charms so that you might see the variability.
Please be careful with these as the beads are ceramic and glass seed beads. Due to the nature of their design, they are not as sturdy as a soldered charm.

Alpaca Silver Catrina Charm
The lovely Catrina, Queen of the Cemetery, has come to represent the Day of the Dead as has no other image. Originally created by legendary artist José Guadalupe Posada, she is recognizable almost everywhere.
Hand made in Mexico of Alpaca silver, the stamped and embossed detail is just fabulous in each of these charms. She measures 1-3/8 inch wide by 1-1/8 inch high. She may be facing either left or right.
This lovely piece is made of Alpaca silver (also known as German silver). It is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc (and contains little or no true silver). This keeps it from tarnishing or rusting, but it might dull over time and need a polishing. Please consider that it may cause a reaction to those who may be sensitive to nickel.

Large Sterling Silver Sugar Skull Bead by Anne Choi
We bought these gorgeous beads initially to make some special necklaces and then only made a few. Once you've seen the splendid detail in any bead by Ms Choi, you'll be addicted to her work. The intricate detail of her design is second only to the concentrated and detailed effort of a celebrated artist as well as the perfect artisan, who completes each bead by hand. From start to finish, each bead is created separately by the artist.
Her work is steeped in tradition - not just her tradition, but those of world folklore, culture and spirit. The patination and oxidation highlight the shadows of her work spectacularly. She hand polishes each piece so that her personality strikes through the bead right to you.
Her Day of the Dead Sugar Skull is surrounded by flowers and branches and is at once elegant and sweet. The image is the same on either of the larger side of the bead. On each shorter side, it reads:
UNTIL DEATH IT IS ALL LIFE
The provocative message is such that it makes one think and smile, just like the image itself.
These are large beads, made totally of sterling silver, with a small hole that runs from top to bottom in the middle of the bead. This allows you to make a great pendant, too!
Each bead measures 1 inch high by 7/8 inch wide by 3/8 inch thick. Though substantial in size and structure, these beads are hollow, so they are lightweight enough for use in any project.

Sterling Silver Catrina Charm Facing East by Designer Maria Belen Nilson
More Day of the Dead Sundries More Charms
If I didn't know she was the famed Catrina, I'd suspect her to be a movie star!
The coquettish image of the Catrina inspires Maria Belen Nilson's Day of the Dead Catrina charms in sterling silver.
Catrina is the original creation of José Guadalupe Posada, renowned author, journalist and political cartoonist (1852-1913). Posada is credited for popularizing the Day of the Dead celebrations, especially through the creation of skeletal (calaca) cartoons that capture the Mexican attitude towards death.
She is quite elegantly dressed featuring a wide brimmed hat with flowers and measures 2-3/8 inches long by 1/2 inch wide. She is hand made, so please allow for slight variation.

Letterpress Greeting Card - I Love You to Death
More Greeting Cards
More Love & Valentines
We just love letterpress cards and letters. The elegance of vintage stationery is all but forgotten. We're simply delighted that some smaller companies are offering the same high-quality papers and designs with a modern touch - so we can offer them to you! The simple design represents the simple sentiment so well. And, of course, because it is letterpress, you can feel the imprint of the images and sentiments with your fingers.
An elegant Victorian-style wooden coffin is printed on the front of the card, topped off by a flowery heart. On the top of the box is a cross and on the sides, two Day of the Dead style skeletons adorn the carrying handles.
Inside, there is an image of two graves, side-by-side, with the same heart repeated inside and the sentiment, in a flowery font, matching the heart, reads:
I LOVE YOU TO DEATH
The 4-3/4 inch card is morbidly sweet. Consider it for a Valentine or for any time you want to make a lifetime commitment. This fine greeted card is printed on fine pressed cardstock with sepia-toned ink.
Please remember that square greeting cards require extra postage.

Wouldn't this make a spectacular centerpiece for a necklace? Add some black crystals or rhinestones, or even some black glitter or krausbouillion. There are so many possibilities!
The trompe-d'oeuil photograph makes this component absolutely amazing. And the laser cutting is so precise that the antennae appear to be real!
Made famous in Silence of the Lambs, the Death's Head Moth is know by the vaguely representative human skull-shaped markings on its thorax. This image makes our beauty quite the representative of the Days of the Dead as well!
Each is laser cut from 1/8 inch thick Baltic birch and then laser cut. The sides are natural wood color and the back has been painted black. To use as jewelry, you may want to add a sealer.

Day of the Dead Necklace - Bishop
More Necklaces
This Day of the Dead calaca (skull) features a bishop's mitre atop his head. He must be a special calaca, indeed. This sweet Muerto was hand made by traditional artisans for display. We made it into a pendant and added a silvery ball chain necklace, so he is ready to wear. The ball chain necklace is 36 inches long - so you can cut it between the little balls with a pair of (not-so-good) scissors to shorten it to the length you prefer
Just like the rest of our Day of the Dead images, each of these little Muertos is hand sculpted and painted by traditional artisans. Each is a bit different in size and shape, but he measures on average about 1-1/4 inch long (not including the bail) by 3/4 inch wide, so please let us choose one for you.

Intricately Detailed Laser-cut Gravestone Replica: Bowland with Goddess Statue
More Embellishments
We had these wonderfully elaborately detailed gravestone replicas created for us! Although they are great for Hallowe'en, we also love them for their deserted feel. The are made from photographs of authentic gravestones in an almost abandoned cemetery in Colorado.
The shadows and angle of the trompe-d'oeuil photograph make this component absolutely stunning. And the laser cutting is so precise that the figure the stone seems as though the goddess herself is real.
The faux dimension on the grave marker is astounding. Although the piece is flat, it appears as though it might be 3-dimensional - making this super for your artwork..
They are laser cut from 1/8 inch thick Baltic birch and then laser cut. The sides are natural wood color and the back has been painted black.
Each measures 3/4 inch at the widest by 2-1/4 inches high (by 1/8 inch thick).
You might even choose to glue this to a base to have it stand upright.

Alexander Henry fabrics are known for their versatility and cutting edge designs. Their talented in-house artists paint each design by hand, and the company screen-prints the final product on 100% cotton. Fabric is 44 inches wide.
The soft pastel tones of this fabric belie the actual illustrations: skulls intermixed with spheres, dots and astral objects. It is a nice alternative to the blacks and oranges regularly associated with Hallowe'en and compliments the colorful Sugar Skulls of Day of the Dead celebrations.

Mexico's Festival of Communion with the Departed - Los Dias de Muertos, un Festival de Comunion con los Muertos en Mexico.
José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) was Mexico's illustrious graphic artist. For over forty years, he worked tirelessly as an incorruptible and truly popular artist, illustrating cookbooks and fortune-telling books, collections of songs and riddles, periodicals and newspapers, children's books and novels and most of all- the famous broadsides that were distributed throughout the country. After his death he was venerated by the new generation of artists -- Rivera, Orozco and many others, who realized that he had both saved and renewed the art of engraving in Mexico and who incorporated much of his imagery into their own work.
There are 273 reproductions of Posada's best engravings - all done for the printer & publisher A. Vanegas Arroyo in Mexico City. Along with the prints, you'll find explanatory notes and commentary, often with topical meaning to what otherwise appears vague or allegorical.
This softbound book is 156 pages and measures 8-3/8 by 11-1/4 inches

Hand-Made Recycled Rejas Frame in Brick Red Featuring a Skull Concha and Golden Trim
Nichos, Frames & the Like
More Recycled & Green Products
Our friend from Ojinaga created this wonderful frame for us. We had so many requests for such frame, we decided to offer this brick red one.
The deep red frame is accented in metallic gold and measures 8-1/2 inches high (including the concha trim) by 7-1/2 inches wide and is 1 inch deep. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 1-1/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.
The center of the concha features a small calaca, or hand made plaster Day of the Dead Skull.
The back of the frame is rough. You can either glue your piece to the frame, or, indeed, glue the frame to your artwork. This would even make a wonderful doorway to a large ofrenda, shrine or mixed media piece.

More CDs with Images & Other Specialty Books
Calaveras - grotesque yet lively images of costumed skeletons - represent a traditional aspect of the Mexican holiday known as the Day of the Dead, when people celebrate the memories of departed loved ones. This compilation of 187 multi-character prints and spot illustrations was drawn from a grand variety of authentic sources, including many works by José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913), Mexico's most illustrious graphic artist. Mexican Sugar Skull Molds - Frida Kahlo
More Frida & Diego
Sugar Skulls are a traditional folk art from Central and southern Mexico. They are customarily used in Day of the Dead celebrations. Local village open air markets offer mounds of colorful sugar skulls for sale during the week preceding the Day of the Dead. Now you can make your own Frida Kahlo Sugar Skulls. The final skulls measure approximately 2-1/2 to 2-3/4 inches wide and about 2/3 inch thick.
Our Frida mold is great for chocolate or soap as the intricate details are harder to decorate, but the traditional sugar mixture works well in either mold.

The Dance of Death with 41 Woodcuts - Reprint of the Unabridged 1538 Edition
Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman
More Reprints & Reproduction Facsimiles
Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543), best known now for his insightful portrait paintings, was better known in his own time for his varied and extensive graphic works, the most celebrated of them all was this - The Dance of Death. This work, from the woodblocks of collaborator Hans Lützelburger, was first published in book form in 1538.
We were stunned by the connection of such an old work and the works featuring the Days of the Dead today. We're also taken by the similarities between this theme and the themes in Alan Lightman's Einstein's Dreams.
The theme of the dance of death was a popular one of the 16th century. Holbein captured the feeling of death, the leveler, in its attack on all classes, both sexes and all ages. A stylized skeleton snatches the child from his mother's breast. The skeleton snatches, plays, tugs and cavorts throughout the rest of the book. The King, the Emperor, the Pope, the Cardinal must cease from their functions. The skull is thrust into the face of the astrologer. The hourglass runs out on the floor. Countess, Nun, Sailor, Pedlar, Senator are all stopped by the common force. 41 finely cut, highly detailed woodcuts capture the one motif - Memento mori - "Remember, you will die." Although the them is common, the variety of expressions, social groups, backgrounds, styles of dress, and architecture and calls to death are so varied that each one is unique in its power.
This edition is a reprinting of the unabridged 1538 edition. Besides the woodcuts, the book contains a prefatory letter y Jean de Vauzèle and various quotations, depictions and meditations on death, deaths of men and the necessity of death. A repeated series of the 41 woodblocks follows the reprinted work and contains English translations of the quotations and verses. Art historians and social historians will find this to be one of the best depictions of class life caught at its fateful moment. The collector will find this to be the finest reproduction of one of Holbein's major works.
Unabridged, unaltered reproduction of the 1538 edition of Les simulachres & historiees faces de la mort. The introduction is by W. L. Gundersheimer and English translations have also been added to this wonderful paperbound volume of 146 pages. It measures 5-3/8 by 8-1/2 inches.

Artfully and accurately rendered in the tradition of Mexico's Day of the Dead, this set of whimsical, vividly costumed skeleton figures honors the departed. The unique bilingual collection features two paper dolls - Catrin and Catrina, 15 ornate costumes, a variety of altar or ofrenda offerings and a very special set of Day of the Dead Stickers.
The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a festival celebrated on November 1 and 2, mostly in Mexico, but also in places with large Hispanic populations, such as te United States and Canada. The celebration coincides with the Catholic holy days, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. It's popularity is spreading worldwide as well During this festival, which has roots in Aztec and other indigenous cultures, the departed are welcomed back to the world of the living. They are presented with food offerings, as well as with sugar skulls, flowers, candles and incense. These items are placed on decorated altars or in cemeteries, along with photographs and treasured personal items.
At night, the families and friends go to the graveyard for picnics and music. A common symbol the festival is La Catrina, a wealthy, beautifully dressed woman who proudly shows off her fashions. La Catrina was created by the artist José Guadalupe Posada. Unlike Hallowe'en, the Days of the Dead are joyous, celebrating a non-ghoulish occasion.

Original Drawing in Hand-Made Frame - Day of the Dead Proposal
More Engagement, Weddings & Anniversaries
Our friend from Ojinaga created this wonderful framed picture. The drawing is an original based on the famous Posada drawings that illustrated the Days of the Dead so marvelously. The drawing is in black, whites and greys, but lends itself to be highlighted with color if you chose.
The deep red frame is accented in metallic gold and measures 8-1/2 inches high (including the concha trim) by 6-5/8 inches wide and is 1 inch deep. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 1-1/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.
The center of the concha features a small calaca, or Day of the Dead Skull fashioned from dental plaster, as the artist's wife is a dentist!
Of course, you can replace the picture with our own, or add some mementos to it and further embellish the frame. You might even choose to paint the image. Please be careful adding color - we're not sure if the black lines will bleed. Please make a test on the back before you try.

Day of the Dead of Night Necklace
From the Karyn Cantor Collection of Classic Hardware we offer you this great necklace. Featuring the work of Vancouver, British Columbia, artist Bonni Reid, this fantastic piece is just so much fun that you'll want to display it when you're not wearing it. Bonni offers a wonderful portfolio and is also an animation artist, with works on the Cartoon Network, MTV, BBC, ABC and more.
The black metal-framed illustration features a gorgeous Day of the Dead couple - perhaps it is Catrin & Catrina - in a romantic embrace in the cemetery. They might even be moon dancing. We just love the new style bow at the top of the necklace
Fashioned from mixed metals, glass beads, epoxy and imagery, the combined effect is modern and Victorian at once. The metal frame is ecologically friendly and the baked-on black enamel can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
The rosary-style chain measures 18 inches and the pendant adds 2-1/4 inches to the length. This is a robust necklace that will make any statement you want it to make!

More Day of the Dead Figurines
More Butterflies & Other Insects
Such gorgeous butterflies - and just the perfect beads for the Days of the Dead! What a lovely addition to a shrine or ofrenda these would make.
The gorgeous monarch butterflies that summer up north return to Mexico for the winter. They enjoy the protection of the oyamel fir trees. Anyone would welcome the lovely butterflies just for their beauty, but the local residents believe that the butterflies bear the spirits of their beloved ancestors, which are honored during Los Dias de los Muertos.
The stringing hole goes from top to bottom and measures just under 3mm, so it should accommodate many beading techniques. The beads measure 1 inch from top to bottom and 1-1/8 inch from wing tip to wing tip.
No two are painted the same and wing color differs, as does the decoration. Each little butterfly has a flower in her hair as well!
We will try to honor your request for a color preference, but we cannot guarantee any particular color, so please let us choose one for you. If you order more than one and want similar coloring, please let us know and we'll try to honor that, too.

The eye sockets have been darkened, the teeth painted in and glazed and little filigree strokes have been added.
Every bead is hand painted and fired for a striking appearance. As you can see from the illustration, no two are painted the same, so please let us choose one for you. Drawing on that rich heritage, here is a quartet of stylized folk art tattoos to adorn an ankle, a shoulder or any other part of the body. A mosaic armadillo, a flower-embellished sugar skull, a dotty little donkey and Day of the Dead pallbearers await you in a splash of vivid color.

Old-Fashioned Chenille Scrap Ornament - Calavera (Skeleton)
We just can't get enough chenille pipe cleaner ornaments and other creations! This is one of the best we've seen! Just the way the ribs are formed is exciting enough, but the knees and hips! What a wonderful design. We can't say for sure if this was based on an ornament of old, but it certainly is reminiscent of the ornaments made in the earlier 20th century.
The little skull is a reproduction die-cut scrap just like those of the Victorian era. Although his bones can easily be manipulated as any pipe-cleaner can, we suggest you be careful not to rearrange the bones too much, or it might be difficult to return him to his original wonderful self! He comes with a little string hanger attached to his neck!
Two calaveras (skeletons) shown for illustration only.

Art Postcard - Day of the Dead Jester
This fellow either died laughing or told such an awfully bad joke. We love the imagery here. This skeleton is subtly dressed in a jesters hat and collar and enjoying his moment - whatever it might be. The hint of pastel wash to his hat and collar lend an even more curious air to the image. It is signed, R.W., but we're not sure of the artist. But there is certainly a Posada-like tone to this great postcard.
Heart Full of Skulls Charm
What a unique design - and you can use it as a charm or even as a special pendant. This antiqued silvery heart charm is loaded with skulls! But, at first, it is not so evident - making this even more fun. The pendant measures about 1-1/2 inch by 1 inch. And, don't you just love that the loop is asymmetrical, on the upper left curve of the heart?

Loteria de la Muerte (Day of the Dead Loteria Game)
More Loteria & Games
What a very special Loteria this is! It seems that in Mexico, there are at least 100 names for death! This loteria celebrates 50 of these names. This game is played in the same manner as the traditional loteria games, the only difference being the images.
Mexican artist Erik de Luna has captured the essence of these 100 names and has created this really neat game with 50 of those images. The 10 tablas or playing boards each feature 9 images representing La Muerta (death). The playing deck features 50 different images - one on each of the cards. The tablas each measure 9 by 13-1/2 inches and the cards measure 2-1/2 by 3-3/4 inches
To play, simply shuffle the cards, then, turn them over one at a time and call out the name of the card. Contestants place a marker on the image of that card if it is on their playing boards. The rest is just like BINGO!
We love these not only for their adaptation into the loteria game, but for their eccentricity and wonderful artwork. You might choose to integrate this into your art rather than play the game.

Flower Skull Candle Holder with Birds
Traditional artisans in Izucar originally crafted these very special ceramic candle holders as votive offerings for prayer - usually in church or for personal shrines at home.
Hand-made and painted flowery skulls are a modern version of the Tree of Life candelabras depicting trees with birds and flowers are traditional gifts of good will in Central America.
Because these are each handmade, they will vary, making yours absolutely unique. It measures about 6-1/2 inches high, and at the widest point, about 3 inches wide.
The candelabra is crafted for a standard taper, but traditional beeswax candles will be lovely in it as well. (You might have to shave or re-shape the candles a bit, depending on the type you use). We think it is quite attractive with no candle at all!
The artisan painting is finely detailed and absolutely wonderful! Each is different as you can see in the illustration, so please let us choose one for you.
