We made these little charms from hand-painted ceramic Sugar Skull Beads and included them in our SilverCrow Day of the Dead Bracelet Kit. We've gotten so many requests for them that we just had to make some to offer to you.

These are created from handmade beads from Peru that have been hand painted, then we created a loop of beads to change it into a charm! The bead measures about 3/4 inch high by 1/2 inch wide. The loop makes it about 1 inch high (give or take a few millimeters).

Each one is completely different from the next due to the selection of the beads and the handmade nature of the charm. We're showing 3 charms so that you might see the variability.

Please be careful with these as the beads are ceramic and glass seed beads. Due to the nature of their design, they are not as sturdy as a soldered charm.

We were delighted to find these wonderful Alpaca silver charms! Made to resemble festive sugar skulls each is created by hand - shaped, stamped and etched to create a very special image. So, although they are all similar, each is a touch different from the next because of the nature of artisan-made charms.

There is a hanging hole at the top. And the eyes and nose are open as well to add an fun airy look. These are substantial, but still light enough to make earrings. Each measures about 1-3/16 inch long by 13/15 inch at the widest part.

Each of these is hand-made so they will vary slightly. Please let us choose for you.

This lovely piece is made of Alpaca silver (also known as German silver). It is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc (and contains little or no true silver). This keeps it from tarnishing or rusting, but it might dull over time and need a polishing. Please consider that it may cause a reaction to those who may be sensitive to nickel.

We bought these gorgeous beads initially to make some special necklaces and then only made a few. Once you've seen the splendid detail in any bead by Ms Choi, you'll be addicted to her work. The intricate detail of her design is second only to the concentrated and detailed effort of a celebrated artist as well as the perfect artisan, who completes each bead by hand. From start to finish, each bead is created separately by the artist.

Her work is steeped in tradition - not just her tradition, but those of world folklore, culture and spirit. The patination and oxidation highlight the shadows of her work spectacularly. She hand polishes each piece so that her personality strikes through the bead right to you.

Her Day of the Dead Sugar Skull is surrounded by flowers and branches and is at once elegant and sweet. The image is the same on either of the larger side of the bead. On each shorter side, it reads:

Over the last few years, people have been producing non-traditional candies and other items such as soaps and plaster images in the same manner of the sugar skulls. This mold featuring Catrina and Catrin is best suited for chocolate and plaster. Sometimes the traditional sugar style doesn't show the detail of these cool little heads.

This traditional design sugar skull mold features two flat-backed skulls. These are all about 3/4 inch thick. Catrina measures 3 inches wide by 2-1/2 inches high. Catrin measures 1-1/2 inch wide by 2-/14 inch wide.

If you are going to make plaster or soap skulls, please do not use the same mold for making edible items.

Once used as portable shrines or altars, retablos are colorfully painted and hold painted, plaster figures representing something special in the holder's life.

This little matchbox shrine features a bride and groom. In most of them, the groom is serenading the bride. The little figures are highly detailed in form and in the painted features. Each of the muertos is about 1-1/2 inches high and their little arms and hands are so finely created.

Please allow for variation in painting and in the couple, as each of these little retablos is handmade.

We love the plain nature of the the outside of the retablo - this allows you to alter it to fit the celebration that you might want to remember. You might add the names of the bride and groom, or add photos and other adornments.

The box or niche measures 2 inches wide by 1-1/2 inch high by 1/2 inch deep. The roof facade makes the entire retablo measure 2-1/8 inches high. When the doors are open completely, the piece is 4 inches wide.

Our imposing coral skull bead is quite stunning when simply added to a cord and knotted at the bottom (the beading hole is vertical from top to bottom of the skull). As an addition to a Day of the Dead ofrenda or an assemblage tableau, it is incomparable. Each of these beads is unique as they are hand-carved. Some have open mouths; some smile; some have variegated coral coloring - but all are imposing!

The approximate size is 1 inch high by 3/4 inch wide and deep. Each of these sits flat nicely on the chin, so you might use it as an additional embellishment instead of a bead. The stringing hole is from top to bottom.

This clever little esqueleto (little skeleton) was made over 10 years ago. We purchased them to sell and then misplaced them. Were we ever delighted the other day to have found them again.

They are made of clay and string and have been tied together so that the limbs of the skeleton move as you move!

From head to toe s/he measures about 2-3/4 inches and about 1 inch wide. On the back of the torso is a pin that has been hot glued so that you can wear this as a pin. Although we've not tried to remove the pin, we think it would probably be easy to do.

We think two of these would be awesome for earrings - if you remove the pins first, of course!

This special diorama is created almost like a shrine or nicho, with our Muertos behind glass. Dioramas like these were collected by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera for the art an beauty as well as the cultural heritage.

This diorama showcases a newlywed couple - apparently Catrin and Catrina. She is sweet and shy in her simple lace veil. He is quite debonair in in his top hat and tails! The deep blue glittery night is behind them and they are surrounded with silver leaves.

The diorama measures about 4-1/8 inches high by 3-1/8 inches wide and about 1-13/16 inch deep. There is a little loop on the back just in case you want to hang it. But, it is just tacked in, so you can probably remove the loop - or, indeed, bend it down.

Such unique skull beads as these are certainly unique enough for the Day of the Dead or Hallowe'en, or, even for every day for you skull fans! They are hand crafted and painted or glazed in Peru.

The fancy decoration is tone-on-tone off-white with an antiquing in grey and black. and almost in the form of a mask. The antiquing color follows the outlines that are a part of the bead.

The stringing hole runs from side to side and will accommodate a larger cord or ribbon, making this a perfect component for a pendant. Each bead measures approximately 13/16 inch wide by 1-1/8 inch high. The back of the bead lays flat.

Each of these little coffins has been hand made of wood and painted black with some extra decorations on the sides. This one features a stripe. The lid of the coffin bears a portrait of the poor calaca inside. We must admit that some of the portraits are not very flattering - or even recognizable. Others are quite nice!

The lovely Catrina, Queen of the Cemetery, has come to represent the Day of the Dead as has no other image. Originally created by legendary artist José Guadalupe Posada, she is recognizable almost everywhere.

What a crew we found in this jail. It almost looks like a party! This little red diorama box features three guests of the devil. A lady of the evening, a convict and a drinker (who can't even stand up) join the devil in a small cell! The background is black with white bars.

Mexican Sugar Skull Molds - Mini Traditional

Sugar Skulls are a traditional folk art from Central and southern Mexico. They are customarily used in Day of the Dead celebrations. Local village open air markets offer mounds of colorful sugar skulls for sale during the week preceding the Day of the Dead. Now you can make your own Mini Traditional Sugar Skulls. The final skulls measure approximately 1-1/2 inch high by 1-1/4 inch wide and about 3/4 inch thick. Finished skulls will be flat-backed.

Over the last few years, people have been producing non-traditional candies and other items such as soaps and plaster images in the same manner of the sugar skulls.

Our molds can be used to make the traditional sugar skulls, chocolate skull candies and even soaps and plaster items.

Our traditional mini mold is great for chocolate or soap as the intricate details are harder to decorate, but the traditional sugar mixture works well in either mold.

Our elegant friend is made of red Mexican clay and wire. S/he measures about 5 inches high (the antennae add another 1-1/2 inch). From wing to wing, s/he measures about 4-3/4 inches wide.

Butterflies have special meaning throughout Mexico. The gorgeous monarch butterflies that summer up north return to Mexico for the winter. They enjoy the protection of the oyamel fir trees. Anyone would welcome the lovely butterflies just for their beauty, but the local residents believe that the butterflies bear the spirits of their beloved ancestors, which are honored during Los Dias de los Muertos.

Hand-Made Recycled Rejas Frame in Brick Red Featuring a Skull Concha and Golden Trim

Our friend from Ojinaga created this wonderful frame for us. We had so many requests for such frame, we decided to offer this brick red one.

The deep red frame is accented in metallic gold and measures 8-1/2 inches high (including the concha trim) by 7-1/2 inches wide and is 1 inch deep. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 1-1/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.

The center of the concha features a small calaca, or hand made plaster Day of the Dead Skull.

The back of the frame is rough. You can either glue your piece to the frame, or, indeed, glue the frame to your artwork. This would even make a wonderful doorway to a large ofrenda, shrine or mixed media piece.

There are holes for your eyes and the nose area pops out enough to breathe easily - but, there is a small flap which carries on the image. Each mask has white elastic already attached so that it can easily be worn.

Day of the Dead Diorama - At the Gravesite

We're not so sure what's going on here, but we were certainly taken with it. Perhaps these two are honoring the dead. Seated on the grave is a Muerta woman in a bikini and, at the foot of the grave stands a fully dressed gentleman. The grave bears a green wreath which might indicate that this is a new burial, or, indeed, that it is during the celebratory Days of the Dead. Once it's yours, you can create your own fiction or reality.

This special diorama is created almost like a shrine or nicho, with the two Muertos and the finely created accessories in a box, which measures about 4 inches wide, 2-1/2 inches high and about 2 inches deep. Dioramas this finely made are generally much more expensive than this. So, we feel lucky to have found it.

Our friend from Ojinaga created this wonderful framed picture. The drawing is an original based on the famous Posada drawings that illustrated the Days of the Dead so marvelously. The drawing is in black, whites and greys, but lends itself to be highlighted with color if you chose.

The deep red frame is accented in metallic gold and measures 8-1/2 inches high (including the concha trim) by 6-5/8 inches wide and is 1 inch deep. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 1-1/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.

The center of the concha features a small calaca, or Day of the Dead Skull fashioned from dental plaster, as the artist's wife is a dentist!

Of course, you can replace the picture with our own, or add some mementos to it and further embellish the frame. You might even choose to paint the image. Please be careful adding color - we're not sure if the black lines will bleed. Please make a test on the back before you try.

Small MATTE Hand-Painted Ceramic Sugar Skull Bead

Each of these beads has been created by hand and then hand finished. Most of the skeleton has been finished in bisque (a matte textural finish). Little bits of shiny glaze have been added in white and in colors on the 3-dimensional accented parts (like the flowers). The eye sockets have been darkened, the teeth painted in and glazed and little filigree strokes have been added.

Every bead is hand painted and fired for a striking appearance. As you can see from the illustration, no two are painted the same, so please let us choose one for you. Colors vary, so we cannot promise a certain color, but if you choose to specify a color, we will try to honor your request. Each order brings us different colors, so our selection often varies.

Traditional artisans in Mexico have created each of these unique candle holders. They are made of brownish-pink and white marble and measure about 3 inches high by about 2-1/4 inches wide and 2-7/8 inches from front to back.

Of course, each is different due to the hand made nature and work of the artisan. The actual piece of marble guides the skilled artisan into shaping the piece. Each is similar to the one pictured, and the marbling is of the same coloring.

Nine festive full color cutouts of calacas (Day of the Dead skulls) have been sewn together in a long string for hanging at your celebration. Each appears almost like a decorated sugar skull. We have searched high and low for a wonderful Day of the Dead Ofrenda to offer to you. And, we finally found one!. From the little wooden table to all of the offerings, everything is hand made and hand painted.

Each table is painted a different color, making the one you receive even more yours! The table top is trimmed with lace and covered with an assortment of foods, skulls, candles, dinnerware and holy pictures. You might consider adding a miniaturized photograph of your ancestor to the table as well.

The entire piece measures 3 inches high (including the offerings). The tables, because they are hand made, vary slightly in size, but they average around 4 inches long by 2-3/4 inches wide.

Although the design is similar, each of the individual pieces varies slightly due to the nature of hand-made folk art. And the items on the table may differ slightly and may even be placed a little differently. We had a hard time choosing which one to photograph as they were all so wonderful!

Such gorgeous butterflies - and just the perfect beads for the Days of the Dead! What a lovely addition to a shrine or ofrenda these would make.

The gorgeous monarch butterflies that summer up north return to Mexico for the winter. They enjoy the protection of the oyamel fir trees. Anyone would welcome the lovely butterflies just for their beauty, but the local residents believe that the butterflies bear the spirits of their beloved ancestors, which are honored during Los Dias de los Muertos.

The stringing hole goes from top to bottom and measures just under 3mm, so it should accommodate many beading techniques. The beads measure 1 inch from top to bottom and 1-1/8 inch from wing tip to wing tip.

No two are painted the same and wing color differs, as does the decoration. Each little butterfly has a flower in her hair as well!

We just can't get enough chenille pipe cleaner ornaments and other creations! This is one of the best we've seen! Just the way the ribs are formed is exciting enough, but the knees and hips! What a wonderful design. We can't say for sure if this was based on an ornament of old, but it certainly is reminiscent of the ornaments made in the earlier 20th century.

The little skull is a reproduction die-cut scrap just like those of the Victorian era. Although his bones can easily be manipulated as any pipe-cleaner can, we suggest you be careful not to rearrange the bones too much, or it might be difficult to return him to his original wonderful self! He comes with a little string hanger attached to his neck!

Traditional artisans in Izucar originally crafted these very special ceramic candle holders as votive offerings for prayer - usually in church or for personal shrines at home.

Hand-made and painted flowery skulls are a modern version of the Tree of Life candelabras depicting trees with birds and flowers are traditional gifts of good will in Central America.

Because these are each handmade, they will vary, making yours absolutely unique. It measures about 6-1/2 inches high, and at the widest point, about 3 inches wide.

The candelabra is crafted for a standard taper, but traditional beeswax candles will be lovely in it as well. (You might have to shave or re-shape the candles a bit, depending on the type you use). We think it is quite attractive with no candle at all!

What a very special Loteria this is! It seems that in Mexico, there are at least 100 names for death! This loteria celebrates 50 of these names. This game is played in the same manner as the traditional loteria games, the only difference being the images.

Mexican artist Erik de Luna has captured the essence of these 100 names and has created this really neat game with 50 of those images. The 10 tablas or playing boards each feature 9 images representing La Muerta (death). The playing deck features 50 different images - one on each of the cards. The tablas each measure 9 by 13-1/2 inches and the cards measure 2-1/2 by 3-3/4 inches

To play, simply shuffle the cards, then, turn them over one at a time and call out the name of the card. Contestants place a marker on the image of that card if it is on their playing boards. The rest is just like BINGO!

We love these not only for their adaptation into the loteria game, but for their eccentricity and wonderful artwork. You might choose to integrate this into your art rather than play the game.

Once used as portable shrines or altars, retablos are colorfully painted and hold painted, plaster figures representing something special in the holder's life.

This little matchbox shrine features a Bride and Groom holding hands. These are quite special as they are a mini Day of the Dead Couple. This little work of art has been painstakingly crafted from a matchbox as well as a bit of plaster (usually made of potato starch and gypsum). It has been and traditionally painted in finely detailed vibrant colors.

Please allow for variation in painting and in the couple, as each of these little retablos is handmade, and measures approximately 3 inches high by by 1-3/4 inch wide when the doors are closed. When the doors are open, the width is about 3-1/4 inches.

Our Day Of The Dead Papier Mâché Judas is a traditional character present in many Mexican and Central American celebrations. By tradition, Judas characterizations are made in the images of those in authority - such as judges and the police. In celebrations, they are filled with gun powder and fireworks and when exploded, a great cloud of paper scraps and smoke appears, the paper raining down around the celebrants.

Of course, ours is an image only (no gun powder or fireworks are included). Figures like this little fellow were made even more popular by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as they began to collect them along with other local folk art.

Every Judas is vibrantly colored in reds, blues and yellows. The approximate measurements are 15-1/2 inches from the tip of his horns to the bottoms of his feet. From wingtip to wingtip, he is about 7-1/4 inches wide. And, as he sits on your shelf or chair, he measures 7 inches from front to back.

Four little Day of the Dead Pall Bearers transport the coffin of a friend (who, by the looks of it, is not yet ready to depart this world. This tiny procession even includes a flowery wreath with a banner. Lots smaller than our larger funeral, this little vignette is made of traditional hand-made clay and plaster and then hand painted..

Just like the rest of our Day of the Dead Figurines, each of these scenes is hand sculpted and painted by traditional artisans in Mexico. The pall bearers are each made separately and are about 2-3/8 inches high. The entire piece measures 3 inches from front to back and 2-5/8 inches from side to side, and - depending on the position of the departed, the height is about 3-1/2 inches.

The gentleman vary slightly (height, ties and demeanor) as does the deceased and the coffin and wreath, due to artist variation. Please let us choose one for you.

Sugar Skulls are a traditional folk art from Central and southern Mexico. They are customarily used in Day of the Dead celebrations. Local village open air markets offer mounds of colorful sugar skulls for sale during the week preceding the Day of the Dead. Now you can make your own Frida Kahlo Sugar Skulls. The final skulls measure approximately 2-1/2 to 2-3/4 inches wide and about 2/3 inch thick.

Over the last few years, people have been producing non-traditional candies and other items such as soaps and plaster images in the same manner of the sugar skulls.

Our molds can be used to make the traditional sugar skulls, chocolate skull candies and even soaps and plaster items.

Our Frida mold is great for chocolate or soap as the intricate details are harder to decorate, but the traditional sugar mixture works well in either mold.

If you are going to make plaster or soap skulls, please do not use the same mold for making edible items.

The coquettish image of the Catrina inspires Maria Belen Nilson's Day of the Dead Catrina Earrings. Catrina is the original creation of José Guadalupe Posada, renowned author, journalist and political cartoonist (1852-1913). Posada is credited for popularizing the Day of the Dead celebrations, especially through the creation of skeletal (calaca) cartoons that capture the Mexican attitude towards death.

One of the most renowned skeletons is the Catrina, (meaning "dapper lady"), and she is always elegantly dressed featuring a wide brimmed hat with flowers. Our earrings set measures 3/4 inch wide by about 2 inches long. These are hand made, so please allow for variation.
