Our Day Of The Dead Papier Mâché Judas is a traditional character present in many Mexican and Central American celebrations. By tradition, Judas characterizations are made in the images of those in authority - such as judges and the police. In celebrations, they are filled with gun powder and fireworks and when exploded, a great cloud of paper scraps and smoke appears, the paper raining down around the celebrants.
Of course, ours is an image only (no gun powder or fireworks are included). Figures like this little fellow were made even more popular by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as they began to collect them along with other local folk art.
Each of these is very different from the next - from his horns to his wings to his body decoration. These are hand sculpted, painted and decorated by traditional artisans in the same manner they have made these for decades.
Every Judas is vibrantly colored in reds, blues and yellows. The approximate measurements are 15-1/2 inches from the tip of his horns to the bottoms of his feet. From wingtip to wingtip, he is about 7-1/4 inches wide. And, as he sits on your shelf or chair, he measures 7 inches from front to back.

Although these ornaments are meant to represent the devil, we're not so sure as they are all quite comical and fun! Each is completely different from the next as the artist, Jimenez, relies on the shape of the coconut piece to create the mask. These are miniature versions of the masks displayed on so many walls and worn during so many holiday celebrations.
No two are the same, as you can see from the two we have pictured in in the illustration. They measure approximately 2 inches wide by about 2-3/4 inches tall and have a self-loop on the back for hanging.

We have long been enchanted by scraps and die cuts. In our set of 2 Vintage Krampus Devil scraps each little devil carries his switch for punishment as well as his pitchfork and chain. He is standing in his most comfortable spot - a flaming fire! These early 20th century die cuts are embossed and superbly printed and ready for you to trim. The colors, especially of the fire beneath their hooves is beautifully done.
These are very old and they do show some wear. Each die cut scrap measures just about 3-1/4 inches high and about 1 inch wide.

Created by Cielito Lindo Estudio from San Miguel Allende, this fun nicho is very specially made by traditional artisans. These vary slightly as all are handmade and painted. The Krampus Devil - complete with a basket full of switches - is driving his motorcycle to the next house full of children for Christmas. St Nicholas rides in the side car packed with presents. This absolutely stunning calavera (skeleton) has been made for us by Pablo Paredes Goche. He is a famed ceramic artist from Tlaquepaque, Mexico, coming from a family of artisans famous for their traditional figures depicting Mexican celebrations and village life. Tlaquepaque, state of Jalisco, is known for a variety of traditional ceramics created in generations past techniques, passed from artist to artist within each family.
SilverCrow is proud to present this truly special figure to our customers. He measures 8-10 inches tall and holds a mask - is it of his living face, or of someone who pretends? And, although the style is the same for each, there will be some variance as they are all hand made by the artist.

Hand-Carved Devil Ojime Bead
These hand-carved boxwood Diablo beads, are inspired by Antique Japanese Ojime - the sliding bead on the cord of the Inro Box. Each bead is hand-carved by a contemporary Chinese Master-Carver, who takes up to four hours to make just one. This fellow measures just about one inch.

Old-Fashioned Chenille Krampus Devil
Devils and diablos are most often associated with Hallowe'en, but the Krampus Devil is a companion to Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus). Together they visited the children of Austria and Germany at Christmastime. While St. Nick rewarded the good children, the Krampus left switches fro the less well-behaved and worse!
Our little Krampus trickster is nary so mean. Subtly meant to decorate, he'll charm you whether traditionally for Christmas, or for All Hallow's Eve (Halloween) - or as a gift package decoration for that devil of a friend!

We had this exciting nicho hand made and painted just for SilverCrow! The artist has adapted a traditional mini nicho (about 3-1/2 inches high) to feature El Cirquero (the Circus Performer) from a traditional Loteria deck. Individually hand-made and painted skulls and devils were added in brightly painted colors - perhaps highlighting the paradox of the circus itself! We just love these!
