San Simon Removable Charm
More Milagros & Medals
More Charms
Removable charms like these from the Victor Flores collections of QT Charms have been trendy since 2003 when they were originally introduced. We were particularly taken by the clarity of the image in this removable charm featuring San Simon.
Some call him the patron saint of gamblers, smokers and drunkards. Because of this, he is still worshiped in many Guatemalan villages with offerings of tobacco, alcohol, Coca-Cola and tropical plants. San Simon is pictured smoking and holding a bottle of liquor, beer or wine. He is not recognized as a saint by the Catholic church.
The entire charm from top to bottom, including the clasp, measures just over1-1/2 inch and from side to side, it measure 1/2 inch. The image portion of the charm measures 1 inch.
QT Charms are versatile and can be hooked on to just about anything - charm bracelets, watches, belts, zippers, and anything else you can imagine.

Hand-Painted Statue San Simon (Maximon)
More Statues & Other Shrine Supplies
More Smoking
More Drinking
San Simon is also known as Maximon. He is not recognized by the Catholic Church as a saint. Nevertheless, statues of him have become quite popular. Our little statue measures just 3 inches high and features San Simon with his money, cigarettes and liquor, just like the life-sized statues found in Central and South America.
San Simon's origins appear to be in Guatemala, where he is found on many folk charms, and is named Maximon (pronounced Mash´- eee - mon). This name is derived from a Mayan deity, so his origins are in folk religion as a combination of the Catholic as well as the Indian.
He is always dressed in a black suit with a red necktie and a large-brimmed hat and is usually sitting in a chair with a cigarette and an alcoholic drink. He also balances a bag of money or coins on his lap or in his hands and holds the staff of a flag or pennant.
Sometimes he is associated with the underworld and sexual prowess. But, as a Mayan deity, he is primarily a bringer of rain and fertility. Because of the items that are depicted with him, he is sometimes associated as the patron saint of gamblers and drunkards. And he is thought to bring worldly wealth to those who pray to him.

Vintage Box of Purple Paper Tiki Cocktail Umbrellas - 1 Gross
More Vintage Finds
Stuff for Summer
Everyone loves paper tiki umbrellas for cocktails. But it's not often a box lasts 20+ years! Well, we were lucky enough to get a few boxes that did. Please be careful with these little umbrellas. Some are brittle due to their age. But we like the way they've faded - and thought you might like them, too.
These are New Old Stock embellishments - never before used. We've not opened every package, and we've not tested every umbrella, and we've not counted to make sure every box is exactly 144. So, they might not all be perfect. But, since they are only 3¢ each, we don't think you'll be disappointed. In fact, newer ones cost more! We'd even hazard a bet that these were better made than the tiki umbrellas produced today!

Letterpress Note card - Work is the Curse of the Drinking Classes
More Note Cards
We just love letterpress cards and letters. The elegance of vintage stationery is all but forgotten. We're simply delighted that some smaller companies are offering the same high-quality papers and designs with a modern touch - so we can offer them to you! The simple design represents the simple sentiment so well. And, of course, because it is letterpress, you can feel the letters with your fingers.
Known for his wit and intelligence, so many of Oscar Wilde's phrases have become almost colloquial. Here is a fine example:
Work is the curse of the drinking classes.
-Oscar Wilde
Wouldn't this make a great invitation to a wine-tasting, a retirement party or just because you enjoy your co-workers so much, you might want them to invade your home as well!
The 4-1/4 by 5-1/2 inch size is large enough for a love letter and small enough for a shy missive to your beloved. This fine note card is accompanied by a matching envelope and is printed by hand on an antique letterpress with soy ink on 100% post-consumer recycled cardstock.

Vintage Speedy Alka-Seltzer Cup (with Pill Holder)
More Vintage
More Get Well
From way back in the 1960s, this still very useful cup was made for Alka-Seltzer! The little fellow in the logo was Speedy. This collapsible travel cup is great for a tote, a purse, pocket or glove box. It folds down to 2-3/8 inches in diameter by 1 inch high.
It opens to just about 3-inches tall. The lid contains a small covered compartment to hold 2 fizzy Alka-Seltzer tablets or other pills.
This is old store stock that was originally a give-away with the purchase of a box of Alka-Seltzer. The cup is very collectible, but, because it is in pristine condition, we're sure you could use it for its original purpose!
Two cups shown for illustration only.

Smashed Penny featuring the Serenity Prayer
Smashed Penny - Lord's Prayer
Milagros, Talismans & Amulets
More Pocket Tokens
Coins like these have many names, but our favorite is smashed pennies, aka elongated pennies and pressed pennies. The first elongated penny was created for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus during 1892-1893. There are some who believe that there were such coins produced earlier, but the experts have singled this celebration as the beginning.
A smashed penny is is made by forcing a penny (or other coin) through two steel rollers. There is an engraving on one of the rollers (sometimes both sides). A crank (mechanical or electronic) forces the coin through the rollers and squeezes it with extreme pressure. This smashes the coin from round to ...you guessed it...elongated. The pressure pushes the engraving into the penny at the same time it is smashing it.
We've been collecting these since we were children, and now our grandchildren collect them, too. Made from shiny pre-1983 pennies, there is a higher copper content than if created with today's pennies. The prayer reads:
God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference.
Because they are smashed in the process of impressing the prayer, they are super thin, yet sturdy. The new oval shape measures about 1-5/16 long and about 13/16 wide. This makes a wonderful keepsake for your wallet or pocket. And, it's a lovely little token to give a friend.
