We love things that are old fashioned and modern all at once. And these lovely correspondence cards are just that. Featuring an image of Paris' famed Eiffel Tower that appears to resemble a vintage French postage stamp, the background features a shadowed image of a portion of the famed tower as well.
The interior of each envelop is just as alluring! These were designed by Johanna Kriesel and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the glorious landmark (1889-1939).
This stylish set of a dozen non-folding flat cards which measure 4 inches by 6-1/4 inches and are printed on fine quality, acid-free heavy card stock in a mottled parchment like finish. The beautifully lined envelopes easily complement the artwork and complete the visual presentation.

These sweet little seals or labels feature gummed adhesive on the back, which must be water activated for them to stick. This feature certainly dates the seals as most stickers and labels today are self-adhesive.
We love the golden embossed border and letters, too. So elegant and old fashioned. They are vintage 1960s old stock that has never been used.
However, we suggest that you use a sponge or some other item to apply the water (rather than licking them), or use an additional paper adhesive.) Because these are vintage, we are not quite sure of their whereabouts on their trip to us! So, we'd like you to be careful.

Delicately, but strongly executed, much like the dance it represents, this lovely charm features detail of one of Edgar Degas' most alluring paintings, Dancers at the Barre. We see the lovely ballerina in the midst of her stretching exercises. Degas was fascinated by the ballet for most of his life. And some of his most powerful work, such as this one, was executed at the end of his career, around 1888.
The charm frame is sterling silver and is hallmarked as such. It measures a touch over 7/8 inch high (including the hanging link) and about 9/16 inch wide.

This size 70 thread was manufactured by the Woolco, a division of Woolworths. These originally sold as 3 balls for 10¢ and 2¢ shipping! Can you imagine. Not so anymore. One brand new ball can cost as much as $6.00!
Each ball measures about 1 inch in diameter and about 7/8 inch high.

Rubber Stamp with the Same Sentiment in English
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) in 1943. It is beloved even more today than when it was written. Ostensibly a children's book, there are so many instances in the writings that might be meant for adults to learn - perhaps to be young again.
This sweet little charm features the fox, who rightly explains an essential part of life to the Little Prince. The charm reads:

This tiny golden poodle pin is a real cutie! His ears and legs have lovely red enamel accents. Don't pass up this kitschy little accent for any French card! Add it to a ribbon on a poodle-lover's present, or just wear it for a brighter day.
Pins like these were very popular from the 1940s through the 1960s, maybe even a bit later. They were sold at the old five and ten cent stores (or five and dimes). There used to be two of them in this small town in the 1950s. the wooden and glass cases were filled to the brim with all sorts of wonderful things - things even kids could buy for their moms - and nice enough that Mom could wear it proudly.
The features have been hand painted. Please allow for some variation, as you might expect from novelty products.
Sadly, these pins, along with the stores, have all but disappeared! We're happy to offer you some of the kitschy little items we've been able to re-find. We hope they engender the wonderful nostalgic feelings in you as they did in us.

Our lovely charm features the little prince in his almost-too-big slacks with his scarf trailing in the Sahara wind. Speaking to the businessman who felt he owned the stars:

Saint Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes Oxidized Medal

Saint Bernadette was the oldest of six children born to François and Louise Casterot. They were quite a poor family and hired Bernadette out as a servant when she was only 12 years old.
Right around the time of her First Communion (February 11, 1858), she had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In all, she enjoyed 18 visions of Mary. Our Lady of Lourdes led her to a spring of healing waters.
She began to live with the Holy Sisters of Nevers near the spring. There she learned to read and write as she worked diligently with the Sisters who cared for the sick and indigent. As Bernadette was unwell and poor, she fit right in. She became a Sister herself at the age of 22.
She died with a prayer for the Blessed Mother's aid and since the appearances of Our Lady to Bernadette in 1858, over 200 million people have visited the Shrine and Waters of Lourdes in hopes of healing.
Two medals are shown to illustrate each side.

This gorgeous French lingerie trim is fully crocheted in the tiniest of stitches - so beautifully! Created from rayon, it has that silky feel that only a natural fiber might.
Rayon is made of plant cellulose. It was invented in the late 19th century in France, but never completely replaced silk as was expected. It was not until 1924, that it officially became known as rayon.
We have been fortunate to come upon some unused old store stock from an old fabric shop in the UK. The original package was unopened and the lace is as pristine as the day it was delivered to the shop.
The deep forest green color might not match your present lingerie, but there are so many more uses for this glorious lace.
The lace is 1.5 cm wide (about 11/16 inch), and we will cut it to order for you. Even just a tiny bit of this added to your collage or altered art jewelry will be wonderful.

The Arch of Triumph - is really known as L'Arc de Triomphe de L'Étoile - The Triumphant Arch of the Star. It stands at the center of a large group of streets that resemble a star emanating from the center of Place de Charles de Gaulle.
Beneath the Arc is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The French established this honored memorial after the First World War. The World War One soldier was buried under the arch on Armistice Day 1920. Interestingly enough, it features an eternal flame burning in memory of the dead who were never identified from both World Wars. This is the first eternal flame lit in Europe since the fire of the Vestal Virgins was extinguished in the year 394 AD!
This memorial has been replicated in both England and the United States as a way of memorializing the unknown soldiers as well.
Almost as identifiable as the Eiffel Tower as a symbol of Paris, L'Arc de Triomphe is often included in French inspired artwork.
This photographic portrait is bordered in silvery metal in the form of a bead. It measures just over 3/4 inch high by 5/8 inch wide. Including the stringing holes which are beneath the actual portrait, the depth is about 3/16 inch. There are two holes for stringing that travel through the bead from left to right.

This striking pendant features the Fleur di Lis - also spelled fleur-de-lys. The stylized emblem is easily recognized as it adorns so very many items. It has long been associated with the French crown and with other heraldry.
Legends abound regarding the image. One of our favorites is that it represents the lily that was given by the Virgin Mary to Clovis, King of the Franks (466-511). Supposedly the lily was sprung from the tears shed by Eve as she left the Garden of Eden.
This striking pendant measures 7/8 inch wide by 1-1/4 inch long. Made of vitreous enamel, each pendant is assembled by hand, so please allow for some variability.

How much fun it is to find reproductions of fine old coloring books such as this one! The original was found in a Paris flea market - appropriately names Album à Colorier. Bringing classical French style to the American coloring book, it measures 10-1/4 by 11-1/2 inches.
Originally published in 1942, Album à Colorier boasts excellent design, and is wonderfully evocative of a French child’s life in the mid-20th century. There are beautiful color pictures of children at home, at school and at play. You'll visit homes, parks and the seaside, and see the children cook, play storekeeper, ski and have a picnic. J. Herbin is the oldest name in current production of fountain pen inks in the world, having begun at his shop on the Rue des Fosse Saint-Germain in Paris in 1700.
These exquisitely charming inks are subtly scented and are presented in elegant semi-frosted bottles. Because they are synthetically scented and do not use pigments for coloring, they are perfect for fountain pens and fountain rollers as well as glass and other dip pens.
Fashioned with great care in the tradition that began in 19th century Italy, J Herbin and other ink makers collected scents from the perfume industry and added them to their inks. These are known as Les Subtiles.
Each of the five scents match the ink color:
Amber scented with Orange Red scented with Rose Violet scented with Violet Blue scented with Lavender Green scented with Apple

Copper Traditional Supple Sealing Wax that Mails Without Breaking!

Unbelievably, this sealing wax does not crack, chip or break - even when mailed on a postcard! The illustration background includes 2 seals that were actually sent via the United States Postal Service on postcards - fully exposed to everything the transport has to offer.
The sample behind the stick in the illustration features blue and copper seals that actually travelled through the US Mail from San Francisco to New York!
Supple wax can be cut, so it is often used on bottles. Letters and cards with supple wax seals can be sent through the mail if the letter is hand-canceled. (Although the seal might make it through the cancelling machine, it might damage the machine itself.)
Each stick measures 3-3/8 inches long by 3/8 inch thick and 3/8 inch wide. Depending on your use, each stick produces 15 to 20 seals!
You'll be surprised how closely this resembles traditional wax. Made by J.Herbin for over 300 years, sealing wax is still as exciting as it was when used officially. Supple wax is much the same, but designed for modern times.
To use supple wax, heat the end with a match or a propane torch lighter (as for your grill). The lighter is lots easier to use! Be sure to do this heating over the your project paper in the right spot, because you won't be able to move it later. Once you've melted a bit of the wax (in a puddle). Once you think you have enough wax dropped, use the stick itself to stir the puddle into the shape you desire (probably the shape of your seal).
Although not necessary with supple wax, we've found it best to moisten you sealing wax seal before actually making your mark. You can do this by blowing on the seal itself, by an ice cube, etc. Impress your seal into the wax after it has cooled a bit. Hold it still for about 5 seconds, and then peel your seal slowly away from the wax. You'll need a bit of practice to create a crisp seal that pleases you. Supple wax melts at a hotter temperature than traditional wax, so it cools more slowly as well.
Use with caution. Never leave burning or hot wax unattended. Not for children.

What a great find this is! Each 6-1/4 inch wide vintage ink blotter advertises a specialty fountain pen for the working woman of the 1920s! Imagine!
The illustration features an old time nurse (cap and all) and doctor. Both are writing on medical charts as the patient recuperates in bed. Unused old store stock in excellent condition.
The description is right on the blotter. And the nurse is obviously using one of these really neat pens:

The Gare d'Orsay served variously as a French station, a postal center for sending packages to prisoners of war during World War II, then, again as a station welcoming home those same prisoners after the Liberation. It was a movie set, a hotel and then scheduled to be demolished. With a government decree, it soon found support amongst politicians and was declared an historic landmark.
Well known for its devotion to the art of the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century, the museum commissioned these lovely artistamps representing such artists as Renoir, Van Gogh and Degas.

More Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol is perhaps best known for his soup cans, his stylized portraits of famous people and his claim that everyone is famous for 15 minutes. This dramatic photograph was taken by Christopher Makos in Paris in 1981.
Following routine gall bladder surgery, Warhol died on February 22, 1987. After his burial in Pittsburgh, a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York was attended by over 2,000 people. This image was used for the memorial card.

Most of our vintage French francs hail from the 1920s and feature on one side the Roman god Mercury. In ancient mythology, Mercury was a messenger and the god of trade, profit and commerce.

Mary's blue crown is really the bottle's cap. We discovered this wonderful bottle of the Holy Waters of Lourdes when Mom was in hospital. It is so very practical for hospitals, assisted living facilities and nursing homes because it is plastic and resists breaking. But we think the bottle quite elegant as well.
The bottle measures about 6 inches high and the cap adds another 1/2 inch. The base measures about 1-1/4 inch wide.

Pierre Bonnard did not start out as an artist. At his father's urging, he studied to be an attorney. As one of a group of artists known as Les Nabis, he is best known for his provocative use of color and form. He rarely painted from life. Rather, he sketched and sometimes even photographed, taking note of the color and light and then painting in his studio.

Venus de Milo is also known as Aphrodite of Milos. She is an ancient Greek statue - in fact, one of the most recognizable sculptures in the world. Not too much is known of this glorious piece of art. Since it was found in the late 1800s, it has been believed that she is Venus (Roman) or Aphrodite (Greek).
Made of marble, she is slightly larger than life at 6-3/4 feet high. Her arms are missing as is her base. On display in the Louvre in Paris, there is much controversy over the sculptor, but it is thought to be Alexandros of Antioch because of an inscription on the her now missing plinth.
Our little charm is made of lead-free pewter and measures 1 inch high not including the loop and about 3/8 inch wide.

Artists' Artistamps - Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born into a highly eccentric aristocratic family. Having suffered from a genetic condition that prevented bones from healing when broken, he suffered ridicule most of his life, as he grew only to 4-1/2 feet tall.
He found his calling in art, and was especially fond of the poster, as he could trade his works to sustain his bohemian (often drunken) lifestyle. His name virtually represents the arts of the Belle Époque, documenting the nightlife of Montmartre. He became a slave to absinthe, and died at the age of 36.

Le Chien Cahier (Notebook)
The French excel in the arts of daily living. There the coffee cups balance perfectly in one’s hand, the loaves of bread jut fetchingly out of stylish grocery bags, and even the trashcans have a certain je-ne-sais-quoi. Édouard Manet Fine Art Stickers
Édouard Manet (1832-1883) started a revolution in the art world that inspired many other artists - most notably the Impressionists. His dramatically direct approach and other innovative techniques are on display in this superb collection that spans his career.
Meticulously reproduced as 16 full-color stickers, they range from the early, controversial Olympia (1863) to the mature brilliance of a Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1881). Other masterworks included here are Carnations and Clematis in a Crystal Vase, Portrait of Irma Brunner, Argenteuil, In the Conservatory, The Balcony, Portrait of Mme. Manet on a Blue Sofa and eight others.
Artists' Artistamps - Matisse: Nu Bleu IV (Blue Nude 4)
The original Blue Nude is an oil painting by Henri Matisse made in 1907. The full title is Nu Bleu: Souvenir de Biskra. He painted this when a sculpture he was making shattered. He later re-executed the sculpture, which is entitled Reclining Nude I (Aurore). These may or may not be the inspiration for his much later gouache series in 1952 of several Nus Bleus.
This particular Blue Nude is numbered 4 and is held today as a treasure at the Musée Henri Matisse in Nice au Côte d'Azur, France. The sheet of six stamps are all the same image - Nu Bleu IV.

The printing on this terrific old French soap label is tremendous. The colors are as vibrant as though it had never seen light. Each label measures 3-1/2 by 7-1/4 inches and is on high-quality cloth-like textured paper, most probably with a high cotton or linen content.
Monsieur de Brazza (Pierre Paul François Camille Savorgnan de Brazza), though Italian-born, is considered a French explorer and is well regarded as the founder of French Equatorial Africa. He is pictured in his Lawrence of Arabia-like garb, ready to further explore.

Aventures d'Alice au pays des merveilles (Alice in French)

This first French translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (there have been no less than seventeen others) was supervised by Lewis Carroll himself. In the opinion of many experts, and countless older and younger French readers, it is still the best. It has a remarkable freshness and original8ity and admirably renders the English puns and parodies with French equivalents. "How Doth the Little Crocodile?" for instance, is turned into a a parody of La Fontaine, the staple of French lesson books.
Carroll picked Henri Bué as translator on the recommendation of Bué's father, who was an Oxford colleague. The younger Bué was just at the beginning of his career, and Carroll could not have known that he would go on to distinguish himself both as a translator and as an author and editor. Bué worked rapidly, and had the translation done in a couple of months. Carroll, on the other hand, spent another two years making certain of it. He solicited the opinions of many friends to test the puns and verses. The prose he seems to have been able to judge for himself, and he wrote to his publisher that he was highly pleased with it.
This reprinting of the first edition is complete with the forty-to Tenniel illustrations that were originally included. O f course it is not just for French readers. As one London reviewer, who called it " a delicious translation," remarked: "We could almost (almost, but not quite) wish we had never read it in English, in order to have the pleasure of reading it in French." He went on to say: "It is an exquisite book in appearance the same size, type and illustrations as the original volume; and the fun is wonderfully preserved." He also pointed out that it would be a great help to the "young folks in their studies." That is as true today as it was a hundred years ago, for the charm of the French Alice, like that of the original has only grown with time.
Unaltered reprinting of the original (1869) publication, translated by Henri Bué, with 42 illustrations by John Tenniel. There is a new introduction to this edition by Morton N Cohen. There are xviii+196 pages in this 5-3/8 by 8 inch paperbound book.
Editor Lucy R. Lippard - a well-known feminist art critic, author and theorist - provides brief biographies for each contributor. These absorbing and provocative insights into Dada philosophy illustrate the movement's enduring vitality and its continuing power to affect modern art.

Vintage Blank Wine Or Beer Label for Your Imagination
More German Things
For all of SilverCrow's ephemera fans, here's a unique item! This vintage label was meant to feature the name of the beer or wine in the blank space. Many wineries and brewers used the same labels for all the varieties of drink that they offered, and would imprint the final product name in the blank area. A recognizable label would ensure that the organization would be considered for not only one, but many of their products.

This might have something to do with the factory, or maybe it is a generic label. We cannot be sure. We can be sure that it will be fun to use for a special project - on the front of a journal or scrapbook. Or, maybe you even make your own wine or beer and want to create a special label.

Color Your Own Gauguin Paintings
Widely regards as one of the founding figures of modern art, French painter, sculptor and printmaker Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) is also considered on of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists. A pioneer in stressing the simple and the primitive in art, he produced works during his South Sea period that were richly colored and subtly modeled - a style that gradually emerged from the flat-contoured figures of his Breton interlude.

We suspect these little medallions to be made of celluloid, or at least a primitive plastic or resin. They are delightful little pins that can be used in any projects. The movable ribbons below the rosette are also made of this mystery material.
