Artists' Artistamps - Pierre Bonnard - Les Femmes
More Artistamps
Pierre Bonnard did not start out as an artist. At his father's urging, he studied to be an attorney. As one of a group of artists known as Les Nabis, he is best known for his provocative use of color and form. He rarely painted from life. Rather, he sketched and sometimes even photographed, taking note of the color and light and then painting in his studio.
In this series of elegant artistamps, the central theme is women, one of his most painted subjects. In fact, he often featured his wife. There are 4 smaller images and one central image featuring detail from one of his paintings.
These faux postage stamps are beyond compare. Usually only sold in the world's best museums, SilverCrow is delighted to offer this special set of artistamps.
Please remember that these are gummed (not self-stick!) faux postes and not to be used to replace the true postage necessary for mailing!

Venus de Milo is also known as Aphrodite of Milos. She is an ancient Greek statue - in fact, one of the most recognizable sculptures in the world. Not too much is known of this glorious piece of art. Since it was found in the late 1800s, it has been believed that she is Venus (Roman) or Aphrodite (Greek).
Made of marble, she is slightly larger than life at 6-3/4 feet high. Her arms are missing as is her base. On display in the Louvre in Paris, there is much controversy over the sculptor, but it is thought to be Alexandros of Antioch because of an inscription on the her now missing plinth.
Our little charm is made of lead-free pewter and measures 1 inch high not including the loop and about 3/8 inch wide.

Art Postcard - Fork, Paris, 1928.
More Postcards
Photographer André Kertész created this stunningly simple photograph - with so much expression in such little space and form. The dinner fork placed in balance upon the dinner plate and shadows compose the entire photograph. Is dinner finished? Has the diner simply paused? The slight shadow on the dish and the continued form of the fork carry a sense of future even with the sense that the fork is positioned as thought the meal has ended.
As mesmerizing as it was when introduced, this striking photo might make the perfect invitation for your next dinner party, or, indeed, the perfect thank you for the one you just attended.

A French Alphabet Book of 1814
The complete title reads:
A FRENCH ALPHABET BOOK OF 1814 for Alfred Bourdier de Beauregard created by his uncle Arnaud at the Château de Beaumont de Beauregard
This charming primer on the alphabet captures the essence of everyday life among the French aristocracy in 1814 in a uniquely detailed series of watercolor drawings made as an alphabet book for a young French aristocrat by his uncle.
The drawings give fascinating views of the family chateau and its grounds, its elegantly appointed interiors, the private chapel, as well as the kitchen, workshops, and stables. The boy's clothing and pastimes are all minutely illustrated as are his instruction in polite manners, music, and the arts. The pages are full of amusing puns and now obscured meanings-the French captions translated into the English of the period-preserving a life of enchantment and privilege which has long since vanished.
Charles Plante, who arranged this collection, is the director of Charles Plante Fine Arts, one of the leading British antique galleries specializing in watercolors, drawings and the decorative arts of the neoclassical period (1760-1840).

This striking pendant features the Fleur di Lis - also spelled fleur-de-lys. The stylized emblem is easily recognized as it adorns so very many items. It has long been associated with the French crown and with other heraldry.
Legends abound regarding the image. One of our favorites is that it represents the lily that was given by the Virgin Mary to Clovis, King of the Franks (466-511). Supposedly the lily was sprung from the tears shed by Eve as she left the Garden of Eden.
This striking pendant measures 7/8 inch wide by 1-1/4 inch long. Made of vitreous enamel, each pendant is assembled by hand, so please allow for some variability.

Valentin Louis Georges Eugène Marcel Proust (1871-1922) is best known as the author of Remembrance of Things Past (À la recherche du temps perdu). Considered one of the monumental works of 20th-century fiction (it is made up of 7 parts that were published over a period of 18 years - even after his death). He is not only a novelist, but an essayist and critic.
Long after his death, there are students of Proust, even scholars who devote their lives the the study of his works. Oftentimes he is associated with the angst of memory. But, we have found his works to assist in the true living of life in the now - so that we, too, do not look back and wonder what happened to our time?
50 tags and ribbon are included with such quotes as:
Love is a time and space measured by the heart.

Artists' Artistamps - Musée D'Orsay Landscapes
The Gare d'Orsay served variously as a French station, a postal center for sending packages to prisoners of war during World War II, then, again as a station welcoming home those same prisoners after the Liberation. It was a movie set, a hotel and then scheduled to be demolished. With a government decree, it soon found support amongst politicians and was declared an historic landmark.
Well known for its devotion to the art of the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century, the museum commissioned these lovely artistamps representing such artists as Caillebotte, Rousseau, Monet, Millet and Sisley.

Aventures d'Alice au pays des merveilles (Alice in French)
More Alice
More French
This first French translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (there have been no less than seventeen others) was supervised by Lewis Carroll himself. In the opinion of many experts, and countless older and younger French readers, it is still the best. It has a remarkable freshness and original8ity and admirably renders the English puns and parodies with French equivalents. "How Doth the Little Crocodile?" for instance, is turned into a a parody of La Fontaine, the staple of French lesson books.
Carroll picked Henri Bué as translator on the recommendation of Bué's father, who was an Oxford colleague. The younger Bué was just at the beginning of his career, and Carroll could not have known that he would go on to distinguish himself both as a translator and as an author and editor. Bué worked rapidly, and had the translation done in a couple of months. Carroll, on the other hand, spent another two years making certain of it. He solicited the opinions of many friends to test the puns and verses. The prose he seems to have been able to judge for himself, and he wrote to his publisher that he was highly pleased with it.
This reprinting of the first edition is complete with the forty-to Tenniel illustrations that were originally included. O f course it is not just for French readers. As one London reviewer, who called it " a delicious translation," remarked: "We could almost (almost, but not quite) wish we had never read it in English, in order to have the pleasure of reading it in French." He went on to say: "It is an exquisite book in appearance the same size, type and illustrations as the original volume; and the fun is wonderfully preserved." He also pointed out that it would be a great help to the "young folks in their studies." That is as true today as it was a hundred years ago, for the charm of the French Alice, like that of the original has only grown with time.
Unaltered reprinting of the original (1869) publication, translated by Henri Bué, with 42 illustrations by John Tenniel. There is a new introduction to this edition by Morton N Cohen. There are xviii+196 pages in this 5-3/8 by 8 inch paperbound book.
Editor Lucy R. Lippard - a well-known feminist art critic, author and theorist - provides brief biographies for each contributor. These absorbing and provocative insights into Dada philosophy illustrate the movement's enduring vitality and its continuing power to affect modern art.
This unabridged republication of the edition published in 1971 is a trade-size paperback measuring 5-3/8 by 8-1/2 inches, 192 pages.

Vintage-Style French Art Deco Cosmetics Labels
The style we term Art Deco flourished in the years between World War I and II, influencing the design of everything from cars and buildings to mundane household items. Art Deco was the throwing off of Victorian fussiness and belle époque lushness, a style characterized by smooth lines and a clean and simple design sensibility.
This assortment of labels Art Deco Cosmetics labels conveys the glamour and mystery that the purchasers of cosmetics long for - whether consciously or not. Sultry eyed women exude confidence in their appeal on some labels, while others rely on subtler stylized flowers to entice potential buyers.
The twenty die cut acid-free archival quality labels arrive in a decorative box that measures 4-3/4 by 6 inches.
