Saint Lazarus has long been known as the Patron Saint of the Sick, particularly of those sick with leprosy. He has represented the poor and the sick in literature, both religious and secular.
Our little golden crutch charm represents his suffering, as he was often pictured with a single crutch. It measures about 1-1/4 inch high and about 3/8 inch at its widest. There is no loop, so to use it, you can attach a loop or cord through the top opening of the crutch. This allows it to lie at an angle, the position it is in when walking.

Mary's blue crown is really the bottle's cap. We discovered this wonderful bottle of the Holy Waters of Lourdes when Mom was in hospital. It is so very practical for hospitals, assisted living facilities and nursing homes because it is plastic and resists breaking. But we think the bottle quite elegant as well.
The bottle measures about 6 inches high and the cap adds another 1/2 inch. The base measures about 1-1/4 inch wide.

Song of Creation by Saint Francis of Assisi

In 1225 the infirm St. Francis was living in a hut in a church garden. As ill as he was, he wrote this poem in which he looks on the face of creation and blesses it in its totality.
The text of his poem in this volume is a translation by Matthew Arnold. The publisher has illuminated each line with paintings. Praised be my Lord for our brother the Wind is accompanied by a Corot painting of trees bent before a gale, and also an illustration by Frank Papé in which a dove is borne joyously upward. In this manner two faces of wind are shown, and the words made more vividly manifest.
In the last year of his life St. Francis, greatly hampered by his illness and progressing blindness, lived in a reed hut in the garden of the church of St. Damian. There he composed this song in which he expressed his kinship with the various aspects of creation. G.K. Chesterton writes of St. Francis:
"He was above all things a great giver, and he cared chiefly for the best kind of giving which is called thanksgiving."

Box of 50 Non-Sharpening Glitter Pencils
We first discovered non-sharpening pencils about 20 years ago when a relative was in the hospital! All is well now, and our great discovery is no less wonderful today. There is no need for a pencil case with a non-sharpening pencil - with eraser, as well! When the pencil point dulls, you simply pull the plastic nib out, push it into the top of the pencil (under the eraser) and a new, sharp, ready to use pencil lead pushes through to the bottom. There are 11 leads in each pencil.
The hospital staff was so enamored by our pencils, that we soon came to realize what a great thank-you gift they are for an office group! So, in lieu of a box of candy, try a box of pencils for your next gift of gratitude.

Terpin Hydrate with Codeine was a popular cough medicine from the late 1800s until the mid 1990s. It is no longer available in the United States because the FDA banned it on the grounds that it had not been proven effective. It was used for coughs and colds, chronic bronchitis and such. This label of the once over-the-counter medicine reads:
ELIX. TERPIN HYDRATE & CODEINE, N.F. Each fl. oz. contains Codeine (Opium derivative) 1 gr. WARNING MAY BE HABIT FORMING. Alcohol 38 to 42%. DOSE-Adults, 1 teaspoonful every 3 or 4 hrs. Take only when needed and not continuously. IMPORTANT-Persistent coughs may indicate the presence of a serious condition. Do not use this preparation when the cough has persisted for 10 days without securing competent advice. NET FL. OZS. PACKED BY LAWS DRUG STORE Prescription Specialists 221 S. The fluid ounces and pharmacist's name were left blank to be filled in upon filling the prescription. These are gummed seals, so they must be moistened before using. We suggest that you use a sponge or moistener as these are vintage. Some may require a touch of paste or glue to help them stay put.
