Saint Charles Borromeo (Patron of Those with Stomach Ailments) Oxidized Medal
More Medals & Milagros
More Italy
Saint Charles Borromeo is quite special to us as this was our parish when I was growing up in Donora, Pennsylvania. But at that time, I was unaware of his patronage.
Saint Charles was born in 1538 in the castle at Arona, Italy. The son of a rich Italian count and the sister of Pope Pius IV. When he was just 22, his uncle (the Pope) named him Secretary of State and made him a cardinal and administrator of the see of Milan. Three years later, he was ordained a pries, and consecrated as bishop of Milan.
Charles was amongst the kindest of men, setting a marvelous personal example and the Diocese of Milan became a model for the whole Church. He faithfully prayed and did penance, gave everything he owned to the poor, went into debt to feed the hungry, and set up altars in the streets to bring Mass to the ill.
He is recognized as the patron of those with stomach ailments because in 1571, the entire province suffered a terrible famine. Saint Charles worked with unceasingly to help the starving and those with stomach ills due to the food shortage.

Saint Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes Oxidized Medal
More French
Saint Bernadette was the oldest of six children born to François and Louise Casterot. They were quite a poor family and hired Bernadette out as a servant when she was only 12 years old.
Right around the time of her First Communion (February 11, 1858), she had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In all, she enjoyed 18 visions of Mary. Our Lady of Lourdes led her to a spring of healing waters.
She began to live with the Holy Sisters of Nevers near the spring. There she learned to read and write as she worked diligently with the Sisters who cared for the sick and indigent. As Bernadette was unwell and poor, she fit right in. She became a Sister herself at the age of 22.
She died with a prayer for the Blessed Mother's aid and since the appearances of Our Lady to Bernadette in 1858, over 200 million people have visited the Shrine and Waters of Lourdes in hopes of healing.
Two medals are shown to illustrate each side.

Vintage New Old Stock Cabochon Pin Featuring a Sick Little Girl - Great for Altering
More Pins & Brooches
More Jewelry Components
More Vintage
More Collage & Altered Art
We were lucky to find a lot of these cabochon pins as new old stock - never used - in a Brooklyn, New York warehouse. They are cleverly made and most are in fine shape. There is some wear from handling on some of the cabochons.
It appears that the cabs are made of metal and that the image has been transferred onto the cabochon either by printing or some other method.
Each of the pins are the same. A poor little sick girl on a pink background.
If you care to do so, you might re-work these into assemblage pieces by removing the cabochon and applying a new image, or, indeed by replacing it with something else. Please be careful if you choose to remove the cabochon - especially if you are bending the prongs.
These were made by a novelty company - not a jewelry company - so please be careful when working with them.
Each measures 1-3/4 inch high by 1-1/4 inch wide has a self-pin on back that has been attached mechanically rather than by adhesive. So, for novelties, these are well made.

Saint Josemaría Escrivá Medal - Patron Saint of Diabetes Sufferers
More Medals, Milagros, Amulets & Such
Many regard Saints as our protectors or patrons (aka Patron Saints), who help to strengthen faith and guide us in our daily lives and even that they might help us heal from our maladies, be they physical, emotional or monetary.
It is believed that if one prays to the Saints that they may intercede on the supplicant's behalf, presenting powerful prayers of healing to God.
Saint Josemaría Escrivá was born in Spain in early 1902. He became a priest at age 23 and three years later founded Opus Dei. In later life, he suffered from diabetes for 10 years. At the age of 52, he inexplicably survived a near fatal anaphylactic shock and was miraculously cured of his diabetes. He died a natural death at the age of 73, and was canonized as a Saint in 2002.
His feast day is June 26th.
Our medal is made of silvery metal in Italy. Two medals are shown to illustrate front and back.

The believer chooses an ex voto (or milagro) that represents the subject of the prayer. This vintage-style ex voto was was created in the image of an lung. Most likely this was meant to pray for someone with lung disease or lung cancer.
This ex voto is new, made of tin that has been aged to appear old, and measures 2-3/4 inches high by 1-3/4 inch high. There is a punched hole at the top for hanging in the traditional manner with a simple tack or nail.

Old-Time Edwardian Reproduction Paper Mask: The Flu
More Masks More Get Well
From about 1901 (right after the Victorian period) up to about 1910, or even as late as 1918 (after World War I), British society suffered a very rigid system, despite the new philosophies and politics floating about. The want (and need) for more liberal thought and a move for greater social acceptance of all British started despite the seemingly unmovable morés at the time.
The Edwardian Period was also known as the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era), a time for elegant masquerade balls with gorgeous gowns and absurd masks such as this, our out older doctor with a reflective monocle.
This mask arrives flat and is simple to wear with black ribbon on either side for securing your mask. It measures about 10-1/2 inches.
You certainly won't want to get anywhere near this sick fellow, that's for sure!

Silvery Saint Charbel Medal - The Miracle Saint
Saint Charbel (Youssef Antoun Makhlouf) is the first canonized saint from the Middle East. He is known as the Saint of Miracles. Saint Charbel was born to a poor family in Lebanon and drawn to the monastic holy life as a child, following his uncles. Later ordained a priest, he was known as a a holy and comforting soul.
He was struck by an illness when offering Mass on December 16, 1898, and died on Christmas Eve of the same year. Several months after his burial, dazzling bright lights surrounded his grave. His corpse secreted sweat and blood in the grave. Pilgrims from around the world traveled to petition the saint's intercession and were blessed with recovery and spiritual grace.
In 1925, Charbel was proposed for beatification and canonization. His grave was opened and his body appeared as though he had only died that day. This was acknowledged by theologians and physicians alike. After this, the number of pilgrims (of all religions) increased, as did the miracles of healing
Saint Charbel is beloved by many because of he return to faith and the reviving of the virtues of the soul that were brought about simply by his life and death. He is known for so many miracles, including the expulsion of grasshoppers, oil lamps burning and, of course, the healing of the souls and bodies of many patrons. A chapel in Mexico City honors a statue of Saint Charbel. There is a pole filled with ribbons tied by supplicants asking for intersession.

St Rock (aka St Roch) - Patron Saint of Dogs & More - Charm or Medal
More Compassion
More Get Well Wishes
This lovely medal is just about 1 inch long and 5/8 inch long. St Roch (also known as St Rock, St Rocco and St Roque) was a French nobleman who was known for tending to the sick and the poor. He was able to miraculously cure so very many, but, alas contracted the plague himself. Not wanting to infect anyone else, he set off to the forest to die.
He was befriended by a dog who stole scraps of food from the family table and fed them to St Rock in the forest. He was able to recover with thanks to the dog, so his image generally shows a dog by his side. St Rock was falsely accused for being spy and spent the rest of his life in jail. He was tended to by an angel while imprisoned.
St Rock is the patron of those who are sick with the plague, cholera and other such afflictions, as well as skin and knee problems. His other patronages include the protection of falsely accused people and invalids.
He is best known as the beloved patron saint of dogs, falsely accused people and invalids.
On the back the medal reads: Pray for Us with a wildflower beside the wording.
We're showing two medals to illustrate the front and back.

Silvery Saint Peregrine Medal
Saint Peregrine lived a worldly youth and was quite involved in politics and very anti-Catholic. During an unsettling time he had struck St Phillip Benizi across the face. The saint immediately forgave Peregrine and turned the other cheek. This made an overwhelming impact on the young man who later converted.
St Peregrine was known for his wonderful sermons and kind personality. Later in life, he became the victim of a spreading cancer in his foot and was scheduled to have it amputated. The night before the operation, he prayed and received a vision of Christ, who, with a touch, healed Peregrines foot - the cancer was completely gone.
Although many people consider Saint Peregrine the Patron Saint of cancer patients, he is also the patron of the gravely ill - those with open wounds, AIDS patients and others as well.

Art Postcard - Barbara Kruger: Untitled (Your life is a perpetual insomnia), 1983
More Postcards
Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist whose roots are in media and design. Her edgy collages are derived from found photographs (mostly culled from the sources she most derides in her work). Subsequent layers display her epigrams, pithy and arrogantly assertive.
Her tongue-in-cheek style is at once humorous and contemplative, sarcastic and true. This is certainly evident on this finely made art postcard print.
As appropriate today as it was in the 1980s when the artist originally captured this image and created the graphic overlay:
Your life is a perpetual insomnia
Don't you just know a million people who would agree?

Box of 50 Non-Sharpening Glitter Pencils
We first discovered non-sharpening pencils about 20 years ago when a relative was in the hospital! All is well now, and our great discovery is no less wonderful today. There is no need for a pencil case with a non-sharpening pencil - with eraser, as well! When the pencil point dulls, you simply pull the plastic nib out, push it into the top of the pencil (under the eraser) and a new, sharp, ready to use pencil lead pushes through to the bottom. There are 11 leads in each pencil.
The hospital staff was so enamored by our pencils, that we soon came to realize what a great thank-you gift they are for an office group! So, in lieu of a box of candy, try a box of pencils for your next gift of gratitude.

There is no loop, so to use it, you can attach a loop or cord through the top opening of the crutch. This allows it to lie at an angle, the position it is in when walking.

Elegant Plastic Bottle of Lourdes Water
From the famous healing waters of Lourdes, France, this very special bottle holds the holy water of the famous waters of Lourdes. The bottle is in the shape the Blessed Mother Mary as she appeared to Saint Bernadette at the Miracle of Lourdes. The label reads:
Eau de La Grotte de Lourdes, Garantie d'Origine (Water from the Grotto at Lourdes, Guaranteed Original)
But even more special is the molded
N.D. de Lourdes Notre Dame (Our Lady) of Lourdes
and on the back:
Mary's blue crown is really the bottle's cap. We discovered this wonderful bottle of the Holy Waters of Lourdes when Mom was in hospital. It is so very practical for hospitals, assisted living facilities and nursing homes because it is plastic and resists breaking. But we think the bottle quite elegant as well.
The bottle measures about 6 inches high and the cap adds another 1/2 inch. The base measures about 1-1/4 inch wide.

Hand Watercolored Note Card - Surviving
SilverCrow Creations is proud to offer this wonderful work of art that disguises itself as a greeting card! Created by J.Stone Cards, one by one, each card measures 3-3/4 by 7-1/4 inches, and is individually hand painted in watercolor on elegant 100% cotton cream colored card stock with a matching envelope. It is blank inside, reading on the outside:
once you have gone through the worst that could ever happen, and survived it: you will have transcended fear & anger & sorrow in a way that will set you free forever more...
We love the sentiment, especially as it is complemented by the rainbow of color beyond the natural tree doorway, with the soaring birds flying free.

What a Relief Note Card
Book by Susan Mrosek
Susan Mrosek is the astonishing artist of these absolutely wonderful cards! For retirement, or just for relaxation, or empathy:
What a relief that as we age we retain our scars on the outside, rather than on the inner cuff.
It is.

Letterpress Note card - Half Full
More NoteCards
We just love letterpress cards and letters. The elegance of vintage stationery is all but forgotten. We're simply delighted that some smaller companies are offering the same high-quality papers and designs with a modern touch - so we can offer them to you! And, of course, because it is letterpress, you can feel the letters with your fingers.
These letterpress notes are printed by hand on antique letterpresses. The illustrations are engraved into magnesium plates. The cards are placed by hand into the press where the images are transferred by relief method, creating an impression you can see and feel. What an inspirational message:
half full
So, if the receiver dare interpret it otherwise by picture alone, s/he will be made aware by the sentiment. The card measures 3-1/2 by 5 inches and is accompanied by a faux wood print envelope.

Tatters Note Card
Susan Mrosek is the astonishing artist of these absolutely wonderful cards! We've all been here at one time or another, so this makes the perfect card for a friend in need of comfort (perhaps you might even send one to yourself):
I'll collect my tatters, the perfect pieces of me, and notch them together in an informal pattern just to suggest myself. Then I can start the welding process, and in a short breath, I'll be fine.
We hope so.

VooDooBaby™ Midnight Driver
Midnight Driver drives out your darkest fears and makes your enemy dysfunctional! (Don't we all need several of these!) He measures about 2-1/2 by 1-1/2 inches. We just love his tiny heart and his pierced ear!
Each VooDoo Baby is hand-writhed from a single string of cotton thread. Amazingly, there is no wire inside the doll to support the structure. The creation of each VooDooBaby takes not only excellent artisanship, but also a great deal of attention, patience and care. They are an expression of imagination, creativity and appreciation and are not for real and possess no curse effect whatsoever - but wouldn't it be nice if they could?

Art Postcard - Clown Feet
From the creator of the ever so popular Addams Family, this always happy clown rests his large feet in a giant bowl, with his gigantic shoes set aside for the day. Typical of many of Addams' drawings the contrast of detail and hinted images highlights the clown's relaxation - with the stage hinted behind.
Consider this card for someone ready for relaxation, whether it be for recuperation, retirement or just a hard day!

Many Occasion Inspirational Card: A Break in the Clouds
Graphic Artist Janeen Koconis created this elegant note card from her artwork called punctuation. Her elegant artwork accompanies the special sentiment from E.B. White:
A break shows in the clouds, and all is changed.
On the inside:
In matters of the human spirit, everything is possible.
The designer believes that a greeting card is not frivolous, rather, the opposite - that it has utility: a card can be a handshake or a kiss.
This is a square card in a square envelope - it may require additional postage.
