Vintage Dennison Coin Mailing Card No. 4 (White)
More Ephemera
They must have been simpler times, indeed, when coins could be easily mailed with no threat of pilfering. These once white coin cards were used for paying for merchandise through the mail. Many people did not have checking accounts - indeed, some did not trust banks - some still don't. The Dennison company was well known for making this type of utilitarian item. The address area includes Zip Code, so that should help identify the era.
The card measures 5 inches by 3-1/4 inches (with the flap closed). The coin holder is made of cardboard and the backing and flap are made of sturdy paper.
This is labeled COIN MAILING CARD NO. 4 and it was created to send up to US$1.70 There are 7 openings:
* 1 half-dollar slot * 2 quarter slots * 2 dime or penny slots * 2 quarter or nickel slots
The blank top was available for advertising or a rubber-stamped company name. The instructions are beneath the coin circles:
INSERT COINS, FILL IN NAME AND ADDRESS ON FLAP
The flap covers the coins. Of course the coin card makes a great collectible, or use it for its purpose. But, you might also want to alter it and use each of the circles as a frame for a thought or a photo or what have you?
We're showing 2 cards to illustrate the cover and the inside. These are in great condition, having never been used. They have faded into a nicer eggshell color with age.

Movie Mobsters Paper Dolls
More Paper Dolls
More Greed
From 1931's The Public Enemy, starring James Cagney and Jean Harlow, to Johnny Depp's 2009 portrayal of John Dillinger in Public Enemies, there has been a fascination beyond compare in American movies with the bad guy, the mobster, the criminal.
Gangster movies had their roots in some of the earliest of the silent films, but the genre only became fully established with the "talkies" of the 1930s. Parallel to the advent of sound in film was the Great Depression with its rampant financial instability and national sense of malaise. There was something fascinating about the tales of poor boys who became rich by taking what they wanted, no matter the consequences.
Although the message, "crime doesn't pay" was always stressed, the undercurrent was that it did pay - at least until you were caught, or done in by the competition.
Organized crime during the prohibition era (1920-330 made an enormous amount of money with their illegal activities such as bootlegging, gambling and prostitution. AT the same time, the Irish and Jewish mobsters were seen as the villains and the Italians a minor force. During the early 1930s, Hollywood produced 3 classic mobster films: Little Caesar in 1931, The Public Enemy also in 1931 and Scarface in 1932. These films were looked upon by many of the country's stricter moralists as a blatant exploitation of sex and violence and great pressure was applied to control their content and to clean them up.
That's when the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930, or the Hays Code, came into play. It caused delays and raised the cost of producing the gangster films, making them less than profitable. By the mid-1930s, things were getting a bit better and the film genre shifted to feature the police and federal agents as the heroes.
With rural bank robbers who had small gangs of their own, such as "Baby Face" Nelson, "Pretty Boy Floyd" and John Dillinger making the news, the FBI agents, such as Eliot Ness, were made the heroes - their names remembered even today.
By the end of the decade, gangster films morphed into film noir. All of the characters were gangsters and there was an emphasis on the crime itself, usually one particular crime, such as in The Maltese Falcon in 1941.
This collection features enough dolls and costumes for you to create 43 different good fellas and their girls.
Included are:
John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard) Public Enemies (2009)

Vintage Evil Bank Manager's Mask with Orange Ginger Mustache
More Masks & Costume Accessories
This is the oddest mask we've ever seen - really! Usually half masks are for the top of the face. This one is for the middle of the face. It covers the nose and mouth.
The mask includes the upper lip and three front teeth, some fat pudgy cheeks and a swine-like nose! The original elastic is stapled to the sides and is in fantastic condition, but you should still be careful with it as these masks are quite old.
There are nice sized-holes for breathing, so you can wear this with ease. The only warning: the best effect comes from the wearer keeping the mouth open!
It measures about 7-1/2 inches wide by 3 inches high and is about 1-1/2 inches deep.
The mask is unused old store stock from a fun shop in the UK.

Vintage Mini Money - Tiny Pieces of American Currency - Package of 5 Bills
Vintage play money like this was available in lots of vending machines across the USA in the 1950s and 1960s! What fun this teensy stuff is! The denominations are different ($1, $5, $10, $20, $50 & $100), so you'll not be sure what the total play value is until you receive your package!
Created by the famed EPPY company, this currency was also used in digger arcade games and as carnival prizes. And, it was even sold as a toy in the Five and Tens. Great for use in your scrapbooks, on cards, for ofrendas and shrines - and of course, for dolls.
Each bill measures about 1 inch long and about 7/16 inch high. This is unused old store stock. You may find that a few of your pieces are connected to each other. We didn't cut them because we thought that would be more fun for you. The image and denomination is printed in green on paper, so it looks like real play money!

Vintage Brass Coin Holder for Nickels, Dimes & Quarters
More Vintage Items
Our old store stock (never used) brass coin holders were quite the rage in their day. We understand that these, in particular, were from the mid-20th century or earlier. Measuring only 1-3/4 square and only 1/2 inch thick, these are great for pocket or purse - or keep one in your car for those tolls and parking meters.
The slots are labeled 5, 10, 25 and 25. But, we're guessing that you might be able to store special tokens in one of the 25 slots.
To use, just slip a coin into the slot and press down. Each section will hold about 1/2 inch of stacked coins.
This is a great old-fashioned item whose time has not faded. Each arrives boxed and most have the original tissue as well.
Sorry, but the coins are not included. Two coin holders are shown to illustrate the item empty and full.
A total of $3.45 will fit in the holder: 10 quarters (5 in each slot), 7 dimes and 5 nickels.

3 Sets of Vintage Credit Memos (6 Sheets Total)

It reads:
WE CREDIT OUR ACCOUNT AS FOLLOWS

Each package contains 3 sets of Credit Memos (1 pink, 1 green) with matching numbers within each set.

Package of 3 Vintage Shire Brothers Checks from the 1920s
We love these old checks. Not only do they tell a story of life and business in the 1920s, but back then, everything seemed more special. The handwriting on most is beautiful. The checks themselves, standard bank draughts, were printed in the old style and in multiple colors. The processing included stamps and machines and perforations, too. So, as you can see by the illustration, these would be a great addition to an altered art or collage project.
Most checks are dated 1926, well before the Crash that so changed the United States. It's interesting to see the prices paid and costs of things compared to today as well. So these might even be appropriate for a school project!
