Fashioned from reclaimed metal, mostly old oil drums, these magnificent milagro-style crows seemed to be made just for us. Whether it be a dove or a crow, it matters not much, so we choose always to believe that black birds are crows, to protect our souls. Because of that, we choose to believe that they are miracles of nature and, for that reason, to us it is a milagro.
Each one has been hand cut, cleaned and hammered, then coated with sealant for protection. The crow measures just over 3-1/4 inches from beak to tail and just under 3-1/4 inches from bottommost tail feathers to highest wingtip. There is a hole for hanging like a milagro. And, if you cinch the nail tightly, you can change the position of the crow easily as though s/he is flying
Please allow for some variation in size, decoration and the placement of the hole for hanging. Created from recycled metals, the artisans have worked around the metal they've found to create their final products, so much depends on their working resources.

This stunning set holder hails from the largest African Tribe (the Zulu). The Zulu have long been known for unmatched skill and artistry in weaving baskets from native grasses. Urban Zulu, faced with little access to natural materials, are now fashioning the same baskets from recycled telephone wire. So they have smartly fused together the past and the future - weaving baskets as they have for centuries, out of brightly colored telephone wires of today!
These bright, washable and sturdy baskets, or mbenge, have been created in a mesmerizing, intricate design in the splendid colors of the earth: black orange and red by skilled artisans who learned their craft from generations before them.
The clip holder will make a striking statement in any room - particularly an office, art room or studio. It measures approximately 3-1/4 inches in diameter at the top and is just about 1-1/2 inch high. The pencil cup measures 3-1/2 inches in diameter at the top and is not quite 3-3/4 inches high.
Wash in warm, soapy water. As it is woven, please don't expect it to hold liquids. It is not dishwasher safe. We recommend that you not use this for unwrapped food.

Our friend from Ojinaga created this wonderful frame for us. We had so many requests for such frame, we decided to offer this brick red one.
The deep red frame is accented in metallic gold and measures 8-1/2 inches high (including the concha trim) by 7-1/2 inches wide and is 1 inch deep. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 1-1/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.
The center of the concha features a small calaca, or hand made plaster Day of the Dead Skull.
The back of the frame is rough. You can either glue your piece to the frame, or, indeed, glue the frame to your artwork. This would even make a wonderful doorway to a large ofrenda, shrine or mixed media piece.

Our little dish is shaped like a flower and measures 8-3/8 inches in diameter. There is a bit of turn to it so that there is about a 1/8 inch depth in each of the petals.
Each bowl is different, not only because it is handmade, but, because the papers are découpaged slightly differently each time.

Leaf-Shaped Bowl made of Recycled Paper
Adapting necessity to art, traditional basket-making techniques are used to make these wonderful little pots or bowls. Artisans use recycled posters from printing companies. First they make long flat strips of paper, dipped in glue - then dried. Then, after the strips dry, the artisans wet them again form them into useable shapes, like this little bowl with a lid. It is all held together with the glue as the strips are coiled. Sturdy household items are the result.
The brightly colored random patterns are derived from the shapes and the contents of the posters used, so you may see some printed words on yours, too.
We were particularly enchanted with the leaf-shape of this clever bowl. It is great in any room - even on your desk. It measures about 5-1/2 by 2-1/4 inches.
Each bowl is different, not only because it is handmade, but, because the paper strips are never the same from item to item. So, please let SilverCrow choose one for you.

Artist Kate Dawidziak is the artist who created this gorgeous note card featuring ravens or crows along with a lovely fairy with magnificent black wings. She is overlooking the water from atop a rocky precipice. Either snow or falling stars are around her as she thoughtfully contemplates.
The image on the front of the card is echoed mistily inside the card as well, muted enough for you to inscribe your message.
The card is accompanied by an illustrated envelope. But, for those of you who prefer your message to be sent incognito, we are adding, at no extra charge, a kraft "paper bag" style envelope just in that case.
This card was made using earth-friendly materials, with a minimum of 50 % post consumer recycled paper. The accompanying printed envelop is mixed-eco paper which may include sugarcane, kenaf, bamboo and recycled wood pulp. All printing is with soy based inks. The extra kraft envelope is made of recycled paper as well.

Our gorgeous Angel Retablo was painted by traditional artisans in Mexico - on recycled, rusted tin sheet. She is almost 9 inches by 12-1/4 inches. We offered the original of this painting some time ago and had many, many requests for the same image. We were able to commission the original artist to create several more based on the original. Each is hand-painted, so each will differ slightly. Expect the metal to age gracefully over time.
Traditionally retablos are created to thank, entreat or venerate saints, angels, Jesus or Mary. Many are hung in the backs of churches (sometimes with milagros added). Once the supplicant felt that prayers had been answered, the retablo was then removed to the home.
Retablos are often painted by artists as not all the faithful have talent enough to render their prayers visually. Most retablo art is somewhat primitive and was once considered outsider art.
With help from Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and their contemporaries, retablo art has become quite collectable in its own right. Seeking to preserve Mexican and other Latin American traditions, Kahlo and Rivera began collecting these wonderful spiritual treasures in the last century.
You might consider framing your retablo in a simple wooden frame or shadowbox wooden nichos. We like to hang them in the traditional manner with a single simple nail hammered through the top of the tin right into the wall. Because it is made of tin rather than paper, your nicho will easily stand on an easel as well.

Nick Wroblewski is a Midwest-based printmaker specializing in hand-cut wood block prints. His images are depictions of the natural world, carved from large blocks of wood and printed one color at a time. He uses a traditional method of carving away more material as the print progresses, resulting in the eventual elimination of the textured image on the block. He is very interested in art that is hand hewn, art that shows the gesture of a landscape, and art that speaks to the dynamic energy shared between all life.

The US Department of Engraving is no longer shredding unusable previously used currency. It is now being pulverized. They do sell shredded notes that never made it through to become real money.
Each half-ounce was previously equal to about $62.50 before shredding!

There are lots of bags out there calling themselves cello, making us think they are cellophane. Alas, most are high quality polypropylene - plastic - that imitates real cellophane! And, as plastic, the bags are made from petroleum and are not so renewable.
These 4 by 6 inch bags are the real thing - cellophane! Real natural cellophane is made from cellulose - which comes from wood. That makes cellophane a totally natural product which 100% compostable and makes very little environmental impact once made. (Of course production impacts the environment somewhat, but the final product hardly does at all). These are the bags that were used in the mid-20th century before plastic bags became the rage.
We love the look and feel and how wonderfully old-fashioned they are. We package lots of SilverCrow products in these bags in many sizes. (We also use the polypropylene bags - we don't want to mislead you.)
Cellophane is highly permeable - allowing moisture to pass through, rather than be trapped inside. This reduces condensation and subsequently reduces the risk of mold and mildew.
But, what we really, really love is that crinkly sound it makes when you touch it! Just like bags so many years ago. Our bags are non-toxic.

We were so excited when we found these! SilverCrow's vintage Post Office Box Doors are the real deal! Coming from the United States Post Office, these elegant older doors have been replaced by the sleek new steel doors.
Although the newer doors may be safer and more discreet as they have no window, we love the charm and elegance of these vintage brass and glass doors. These doors are reminiscent of the days when letter writing and penmanship were not only necessary, but welcomed arts.
Each door is different (two are shown - back and front), but are similar to the ones shown. All are in great condition with working lock mechanisms (instructions are included). In fact, you can even change the 3-character combination!
Consider adding a door to a cigar box or altered book for a very special niche. Or, make a coin bank and use the door as the entry to your riches.
Now, we have two styles available:

Ain't Life Great - Everyday Greeting Card
Illustrator dug Nap is famous for his bold style evoking a contemporary burst of living out loud fun! Admittedly slightly twisted, dug creates cards with humorous sayings and renders them with a beautiful, painterly technique. His brushstrokes are worthy of his 16th century muse Lucas Cranach (for whom he named is cat), dug's work is artistically sophisticated and then just plain fun!
On the outside, he declares:

Artist Neide Ambrosio has created wearable art - visual textures in vertical stripes. She links shiny aluminum pop-tops with silvery brass hoops creating a stunning bag for daytime or evening wear.
This lovely bag is lined with silky silver and measures about 11-4/5 inches wide by almost 8 inches high by 1 inch deep. The strap measures almost 45 inches by 1-2/5 inch wide.

Hand-Painted Retablo on Recycled Tin: The Angel Protects

Our gorgeous Angel Retablo was painted by traditional artisans in Mexico - on recycled, rusted tin sheet. She is almost 9 inches by 12-1/4 inches. Each retablo is hand-painted, so each will differ slightly. Expect the metal to age gracefully over time.
This particular retablo features an angel with hand outstretched as if to offer assistance and love. She is dressed demurely in an elegant robe of purple and rust.
You might consider framing your retablo in a simple wooden frame (without glass is best!) or shadowbox wooden nichos. We like to hang them in the traditional manner with a single simple nail hammered through the top of the tin right into the wall. Because it is made of tin rather than paper, your nicho will easily stand on an easel as well.

The Book of the Kiss is a collection of quotes from various writers from D.H. Lawrence to H.G. Wells relating to the ever-popular kiss. This short book is illustrated with several fine eighteenth century engravings. Saint Francis with Crow Bulto Nicho Retablo
Animal and nature lovers have long had a sincere connection to Saint Francis of Assisi, and he has become one of the most popular saints of all time. Although his home was in Italy, the Franciscan Friars brought their love for him to the New World. Many missions in Mexico and the southwest United States were created by the Franciscans.
We commissioned this lovely nicho and Santo in much the same way that the original settlers did - unless they were talented enough to make retablos or Santos themselves. The original versions of such religious artwork were often made for small chapels and the settlers' homes and created by itinerant artists.
Each of these is handmade of recycled wood - Mexican rejas (fruit crates) and then hand painted. The entire piece measures just about 15 inches high. Each is handmade, so please allow for some variation.

Sunny Candy Wrapper Purse
This cool bag is made from recycled candy and food wrappers! Each one is unique as they are all handmade. It is made with the same technique that children once used to weave chewing gum wrappers in to long chains. But, don't worry, your bag is much sturdier because the waterproof wrapper is wrapped around a strip of recycled paper before it is folded. Our Sunny bag is made of interwoven yellow and silver wrappers. The yellow ones get their pattern from the writing on the bag!
