Who doesn't love the idea of breaking open a piñata and watching all those goodies rain down? This little fellow won't hold a lot, but what a great way to present a small gift for someone - or just for decoration - he's just so festive.

S/he is only about 7 inches high from hears to hooves and from nose to tail s/he measures just over 6 inches, and is about 3 inches wide. There's an opening on the bottom (although you might have to fiddle with it a bit to open it) for you to insert your present/s.

A novena is a series of prayers, attributed to those who celebrate the Catholic religion, that are said over nine days.

This lovely little booklet features a Novena in honor of Santa Elena de la Cruz (aka, Saint Helen, Saint Helena). The booklet is printed in Spanish and features nine days of prayers and many examples.

Santa Elena was the mother of Constantine the Great. Upon her husband's death, her son brought her to his home and treated her as royalty. She used this position in the service of her devotion and helped build churches throughout the Constantine's empire. "Of the cross" was added to her name, as, at the age of 80 she led a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to find the true cross.

There is great devotion to Santa Elena throughout Mexico. In fact, there are even spells from the local folk religions that celebrate Santa Elena. These spells are primarily love spells.

There are 16 black and white pages, that show some yellowing inside the bright white cover. These are lovely for prayer as well as for artwork that may involve a tribute. The booklet measures 4-3/8 inches by 3-1/8 inch and is stapled once at the spine.

We thought these wonderful statues were sold out, but we found several more hiding behind other merchandise!

Xiuhtecuhtli is the oldest of the Aztec gods. He is the caretaker, the personification of light in the darkness, warmth in coldness, and life in death. He is a god of light and fire.

The Aztec century was 52 years. At the end of each century, the Aztecs feared that the gods would discontinue their agreements with mankind. Feasts in their honor were held to appease the gods, particularly Xiuhtecuhtli.

Mexican artist Angel Cerón has created a unique rendering of the famed god that almost appears to be an antiquity. Each statue measures about 9 inches high.

Silvery Medal featuring La Monserrat (Black Madonna)

The Virgin of Montserrat is a statue of the Virgin Mary and infant Christ venerated at the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery in the Montserrat mountain in Catalonia, Spain. She is a black Madonna. And for that reason, she is often called La Moreneta ("The little dark-skinned one"). Legend has it that she was carved in Jerusalem in the very early days of the Catholic Church, but it is really from the late 12th century as it is carved in the Romanesque style. It is believed that the Benedictine monks built their monastery around the statue, rather than move it. It is surrounded by an alter of gold and many make pilgrimage to pay homage to La Monserrat.

You'll love our authentic Mexican Loteria Game. The game is played much like American Bingo -- so it is sometimes even called Mexican Bingo.

There are many brands in Mexico and this is one of the older ones. Each brand features different artwork and different tablas (or playing board) and naipes (cards).

Each of the 10 tablas features 16 different pictures. The back of each cardboard features a pencil puzzle - a maze, connect the dots or another. The playing boards measure 8 inches by 5-1/8 inch.

There are 54 naipes (cards) that are numbered and contain the same artwork as on the cards. Cards are 3-3/4 inches by 2-1/2 inches. There is one additional card that instructs the player on the correct way to shuffle cards.

The artwork on this set seems a bit brighter than our other sets.

Small Hand-Carved Alebrijes Dog

Alebrijes are created in Oaxacan region of Mexico and have been for years! The carvings have been created by the same families, with the traditions and techniques passed down from generation to generation for decades.

The pieces are lightweight because they are carved from copal - a soft wood that is prevalent on the Mexican landscape. Pieces are then painted in bright colors and patterns evocative of the lively colors traditionally associated with Mexican homes and artwork. The carvers feel that the figures will bring the owners good luck!

Our little dogs are hand-carved and decorated in bright shades of red with black spots. They are similar to the two pictured but might be sitting or standing in any position. We just love their comical expressions!

All of the dogs are similar in size - but will vary depending on the tail position. From snout to tail they vary from 3-1/2 inches to 5-1/2 inches and from ground to ear or tail (whichever is higher), they measure from 2-3/4 inches to 4 inches high.

Her colorful clothing is accented with intricate artwork (usually flowers) and glitter jewelry highlights. The movable arms and legs are attached with thread and allow you to pose her in many different ways. We love sitting several of them together, as though a fiesta was waiting to happen!

Art Postcard - Elegy to the Spanish Republic # 34

Robert Motherwell was an American abstract expressionist painter and printmaker. Although his major works are paintings, he is also quite well known for his philosophical writings, having been a philosopher as well as an artist. Connecting the mind to the canvas was his passion.

The Elegy for the Spanish Republic # 34 is one of the many pieces in the series by the same name, considered to be his most significant work. The stark black against the washed colors creates visual impact.

These cards were sent to us in error, but we decided to keep them, as the black paint reminded us of the silhouettes of crows in flight. We have no way of knowing if this was his intention, but we decided to interpret his artwork in this manner as it was our first impression. As crows are known in many cultures to be protectors, we hope the Spanish Republic willing to accept our interpretation.

These bright and cheerful confetti eggs are the real thing! They are washed (the egg removed) and dyed - and then filled with confetti. The opening is then covered with tissue paper! Tradition has it that they should be broken on the heads of friends and family, but we don't recommend this.

These are traditionally used in Mexican celebrations. Be sure not to eat these as they are meant only for fun.

Ours are packaged in dozen egg boxes, however, as they are delicate, we cannot guarantee that they will all be perfect upon arrival. We pack them safely, so we expect that most, if not all, will survive the trip.

These cascarones are REAL EGGS that have been washed, dyed and filled with confetti. Please be careful when using them. Cascarones are NOT EDIBLE. Wash hands after use. Not for children under 10.

Our Day Of The Dead Papier Mâché Judas is a traditional character present in many Mexican and Central American celebrations. By tradition, Judas characterizations are made in the images of those in authority - such as judges and the police. In celebrations, they are filled with gun powder and fireworks and when exploded, a great cloud of paper scraps and smoke appears, the paper raining down around the celebrants.

Of course, ours is an image only (no gun powder or fireworks are included). Figures like this little fellow were made even more popular by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as they began to collect them along with other local folk art.

Each of these is very different from the next - from his horns to his wings to his body decoration. These are hand sculpted, painted and decorated by traditional artisans in the same manner they have made these for decades.

Every Judas is vibrantly colored in reds, blues and yellows. The approximate measurements are 15-1/2 inches from the tip of his horns to the bottoms of his feet. From wingtip to wingtip, he is about 7-1/4 inches wide. And, as he sits on your shelf or chair, he measures 7 inches from front to back.

Copal Incense Tears

More Metaphysical

Copal incense has been used for centuries in Mesoamerica. Although it is available in other forms, resin is the most common for rituals and for refreshing. Most often called copal tears resin, these are really chunks of crystallized copal resin. It is believed to open the soul to creativity.

Because it is not self-lighting, you'll need to burn it with self-lighting charcoal made especially for burning resin and powder incense, such as Three Kings Charcoal. Once placed on burning charcoal, it makes a sweet, thick smoke. Some people grind the resin chunks before burning, and others prefer to use the chunks whole.

Because of its soft, warming sweet smoke, is is traditionally burned in protection, cleansing and purification ceremonies. This is the same incense that was burned atop the ancient pyramids of the Aztecs and Mayans.

The word copal is derived from the Nahuatl word copalli, meaning incense. It is believed that the resin was extracted from the tree of life and given to humans as a gift by the Mayan gods.

Frida Kahlo is an exceptional figure in Mexican history; her relationship with Diego Rivera was, for 25 years, the center around which the outstanding national, artistic, social and political groups of the first half of the 20th century, revolved. However, far beyond her role as Diego's wife, Frida was an artist who made an unquestionable contribution to the Mexican expressive arts; she was also a woman of vanguardist social ideas who held considerable sway over her generation.

Frida carefully cultivated her image; as an adolescent, her short hair and dresses clearly belied her special tastes. Later she began to use regional costumes, above all those worn by the Tehuanas or women of the Tehuantepec zone of Oaxaca, Mexico. Often adorned with flounces, pleated ruffles and beautiful embroidery, these traditional garments would subsequently become her personal trademark. Her distinctive style blended imitation and find jewelry as well.

By using full-length dresses or jeans, Frida sought to conceal her thinner right leg, which, originally a consequence of polio, was worsened by an accident at the age of eighteen. Although Frida was destined to spend her life amid physicians, hospitals and operations, she never ceased to cultivate an image that portrayed her as brimming with life and color.

We can imagine the ritual of her daily preparations before embarking on everyday domestic tasks like taking Diego his lunch in a basket, or sitting to work at her easel. She painstakingly selected her skirt, blouse, shawl, ribbons and jewelry, braided her hair and completed this extraordinary harmony of color form and texture with the floral headdresses that crowned her image for the day.

José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) was Mexico's illustrious graphic artist. The Codex Borgia: A Full-Color Restoration

Considered by many scholars the finest extant Mexican codes and one of the most important original sources for the study of pre-Columbian religion, the Codex Borgia is a work of profound beauty, filled with strange and evocative images related to calendrical, cosmological, ritual and divinatory matters. Generally similar in style to such Mixtec manuscripts as the Codex Nuttall, the Codes Borgia is thought to have had its origin (ca. 1400 ad) in the south central highlands of Mexico. It is most probably a religious document that once belonged to a temple or sacred shrine.

One use of the Codex may have been to divine the future, for it includes ritual 260-day calendars, material on aspects of the planet Venus and a sort of numerological prognostication of the lives of wedded couples. Another section concerns various regions of the world and the supernatural characters and attributes of those regions. Also described are the characteristics of a number of deities, while still other passages may relate to installation ceremonies of rulers in pre-Columbian kingdoms.

Until this publication, the Codex Borgia has been largely inaccessible to the general public. The priceless original is in the Vatican Library and previous photographic facsimiles are very rare and/or very expensive. Moreover, the original Codex has been damaged over the centuries, resulting in the obscuration and loss of many images. In order to recapture the beauty and grandeur of the original, Gisele Díaz and Alan Rodgers have painstakingly restored the Codex by hand - a seven-year project - employing the most scrupulous research and restoration techniques. The result is 76 large full-color plates of vibrant, striking depictions of gods, kings, warriors, mythical creatures and mysterious abstract designs - a vivid panorama that offers profound insights into pre-Columbian Mexican myth and ritual. Each of these lovely crosses is fashioned of wood and painted in traditional Mexican colors. Then, the top is covered with many different milagros. Individual milagros are attached by tiny nails hammered into the wood.

Because these crosses are handmade, each is unique. The measurements are approximately 8 inches high by 6 inches wide and about 1-1/2 inches thick. The pictured sample includes milagros representing, among others, chiles, men, women, hearts, locks, animals, arms, legs, eyes, birds.

Handmade Amulet for Luck and Love

This large Mexican packet amulet is decorated with so very many meaningful items that it is hard to describe! The centerpiece is a herradura (magnetic horseshoe) wrapped with colorful rayon thread. Round, flower and leaf sequins are spread throughout. The horseshoe faces downward in the middle of the red paper covered heart. It frames a holy picture of San Martin Caballero the patron of luck and money. Wooden crosses are at each of the top corners.

This special amulet also contains wheat stalks, golden threads and seeds. The small packet covered in velvet usually contains wheat seeds or grain, representing gold dust - or, seeds of the Job's tears plant for protection.

Each of these 6-inch high amulets is basically the same, but, of course, because they are each hand-made, you can rest assured that each is also unique, and the maker affixes a special stamped paper on the back with spiritual images specific to that maker. The entire piece is covered with vinyl film and arrives with a hanging string.

This makes a lovely engagement or wedding gift, offering protection for the new couple. Of course, we cannot promise that it does have powers, but oftentimes, belief is what is most powerful.

Similar to many protection packages, these short vials contain a collage of plant and mineral material as well as lucky charms. The cap is sealed with colorful plasticized material (usually red or green) so your amulet stays intact. The bottle itself is made of glass, and, although strong, is breakable.

Drawing on the exuberant iconography of the skeleton in Mexican culture, Bunny Pierce Huffman has created whimsical, multidimensional scenes of Mexican life circa 1900, enacted by skeleton figures similar to those in Day of the Dead tableaux and in Mexican folk art, satire, and drama.

Art Postcard - Frida & Diego en el Hospital Inglés de México

Artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, the master artists from Mexico in the 20th century. Theirs was a tumultuous relationship, but loving and supportive in its own way. Frida suffered from Polio as a child, which left one leg smaller than the other. Several accidents also slowed her down, but not her art.

This wonderful art postcard tells all about the tenderness underlying their drama. Taken at the English Hospital in Mexico, during one of her illnesses.

She died in 1954, three years before her beloved Diego.

Joan Miró's line recalls Picasso's in clarity and power; the Catalan's "plastic aggressiveness" led him, as it did his Andalusian friend, to bold, successful experiment and innovation in ceramics, sculpture and printmaking, especially lithography. The lithographic print medium suited and encouraged the artist's life-long, often radical obsession with stripping art to the marrow. The 40 plates reproduced here sample the pith of his lithographic production - a series produced in 1944, full of the eerie images and roll distortion he had sought on canvas for decades.

Although this was not designed as a coloring book, the black and white illustrations offer the amateur artist an opportunity to re-illustrate Miró. Of course, they can be admired and framed for the striking art that they are - in black and white.

Silvery Medal featuring Nino Fidencio

Known as a local or folk saint, El Niño Fidencio has not been recognized by the Vatican as a saint. He was a local curandero (healer), born in Mexico. He was known to heal many, even of sadness, as he was such a happy man. He was known to use the traditional ways of healing as well as psychological ones. He is venerated today by many and his followers, fidencitos, make pilgrimages to his town twice yearly to celebrate his healing and to hope for miracles. Some of the fidencitos go into trance-like states, believed to become El Niño and are transferred his healing powers for that short while.
