These politically incorrect Indian Chief Headdresses were made as a give-away advertisement for the White Castle Hamburger restaurants in the mid-20th century. We know that they were offered before 1963, because there is no zip code in the address.

We love the earth tone coloring of the feathers and the bead-printed bands. But the extra-special feature is that these can be adapted for children or adults to wear!

On the front it reads:

ME BIG CHIEF! - BUY ONLY
White Castle
ALL-BEEF HAMBURGERS

On the back are the instructions for sizing for an adult or a child to wear. The bottom band is detachable and the pre-punched slots make it easy to size correctly for your head.

The measurements before you assemble the headdress are 15 inches wide by 6-5/8 inches high Made from pliable, but sturdy cardstock, these are in superb condition for their age, showing only slight discoloration on the back, as only a true vintage item would age.

The green printing on the back indicates that these were produced by the Paperlynen Company of Columbus, Ohio.

These vintage recordings hail from the late 1940s through the early 1950s. Each one is different and we haven't played any of them, but none of them show much wear. Each side features a different recording - some by such groups as the Sandpipers & Mitch Miller's Orchestra.

We suspect the recordings to be 78rpm because of the small hole for the spindle and the dates of the recordings. Some even have the original codes engraved by hand  along the inner rim. The labels are in great shape, too.

We originally bought these as décor for a child's room, lining up several in a row to make a special border! We only wish we would have photographed it!

These make great clocks because the hole is already there for the mechanism.

Each record measures 6 inches in diameter. The label is about 2-1/2 inches in diameter.

No one of these is like another, so please let us choose one for you.

This wonderful volume brings into general circulation for the first time a rare edition of Aesop's Fables issued in Paris in 1931 and limited to only 665 copies. The book combines the 1692 translation of the Fables by English journalist Sir Roger L'Estrange with 50 drawings created especially as illustration for the tales by famed American sculptor, painter and illustrator Alexander Calder.

L'Estrange's 17th-century rendering of the fables is a delight to read, judged by The Cambridge History of English Literature "the best that we have." Rare BLUE Plastic Nursery Rhyme Plaque - Hey-Diddle-Diddle

This vintage 1969 nursery rhyme wall plaque measures about 7 inches wide by 5-1/2 inches high. The whole story is here:

Hey-diddle-diddle
The cat and the fiddle.
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laughed
To see such sport,
And the dish ran away
with the spoon.

This is old-store stock, unused and in great condition. The poem and the characters are raised from the plaque and are highlighted with golden accents. These were manufactured by Invicta Plastics and have lots of detailed information on the back regarding Invicta's company and locations. Some of these have the mounting tabs on the back that may or may not still be sticky. They were originally used to mount on the wall in a child's room - and would look great in a shadow box frame for a nostalgic touch.

The cow jumping over the moon is the delight of so very many children of all ages! The actual meaning is a bit fuzzy. Some say that it represents the rise of Richard III to power. Others suggest that it represents the constellations in the spring sky. Still others attribute the little poem to a description of Queen Elizabeth I and her good friend Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester. She often referred to him as her lap dog.

First published in 1845, Struwwelpeter (variously translated as "slovenly" or "shock-headed" Peter) has become widely recognized as one of the most popular and influential children's books ever written. Heinrich Hoffmann was a Frankfurt physician. Unhappy with the dry and pedagogic books available for children at the time, he wrote and illustrated Struwwelpeter as a Christmas present for his 3-year-old son. The book relates in verse and pictures the often gruesome consequences that befall children who torment animals, play with matches, suck their thumbs, refuse to eat, fidget at meals, etc.

Written in rhyming couplets and illustrated by the author, the book was an immediate success. It has since gone through hundreds of editions and been published in almost every European language. The present volume reprints 25 color plates from a German edition (including a bonus plate done for the 100th edition in 1876) with the reset text of a standard English translation. Also included are the full German text and an afterword with a brief biography of the author and note on how the book came to be written.

Plastic Nursery Rhyme Plaque - Jack & Jill in Blue

This vintage 1969 nursery rhyme wall plaque from Invicta measures about 8 inches wide by 5-3/4 inches high. Jill and Jack are running with their pail as a couple of bunnies and a bird look on. It is made of light blue hard plastic and includes the Jack and Jill Nursery Rhyme:

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water;
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after.

This is old-store stock, unused and in great condition. The poem and the characters are raised from the plaque and are highlighted with golden accents. These were manufactured by Invicta Plastics and have lots of detailed information on the back regarding Invicta's company and locations. Some of these have the mounting tabs on the back that may or may not still be sticky. They were originally used to mount on the wall in a child's room - and would look great in a shadow box frame for a nostalgic touch.

There are so many sources of origin claimed for the Jack and Jill rhyme, that it is hard to know which is true. Many nursery rhymes began as satirical poems regarding the politics of the day. Still others were meant tell the stories of history to children, modified to help soften the harsher news.

Some say that Jack and Jill is the story of the beheading of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. Others insist that it was modeled after a fairy tale about 2 childhood friends in Norway. And still another associates it with the British monetary unit, gill, and the jackpot that ensued for the country.

This vintage 1969 nursery rhyme wall plaque measures about 8 inches wide by 5-3/4 inches high. There is a sweet picture of a girl and a boy on a teeter-totter made of a log and plank, accompanied by a bunny and some birds. It is made of light blue hard plastic and includes the Margery Daw Nursery Rhyme:

See saw Margery Daw,
Jacky shall have a new master;
He shall have but a penny a day,
Because he can't work any faster.

This is old-store stock, unused and in great condition. The poem and the characters are raised from the plaque and are highlighted with golden accents. In researching the meaning of this rhyme, we have found that it probably wasn't meant for children in the first place. It was most likely a worker's rhyme used by men sawing large logs of wood using two-handled saws - to help them keep time. It's origin appears to be in the 18th century and Margery was a poor country name, and Daw meant an untidy person. Working rhymes generally contained references to wages and eventually made their way into children's lives through their working fathers - just as the see-saw did!
