A French Alphabet Book of 1814
More Things French
The complete title reads:
A FRENCH ALPHABET BOOK OF 1814 for Alfred Bourdier de Beauregard created by his uncle Arnaud at the Château de Beaumont de Beauregard
This charming primer on the alphabet captures the essence of everyday life among the French aristocracy in 1814 in a uniquely detailed series of watercolor drawings made as an alphabet book for a young French aristocrat by his uncle.
The drawings give fascinating views of the family chateau and its grounds, its elegantly appointed interiors, the private chapel, as well as the kitchen, workshops, and stables. The boy's clothing and pastimes are all minutely illustrated as are his instruction in polite manners, music, and the arts. The pages are full of amusing puns and now obscured meanings-the French captions translated into the English of the period-preserving a life of enchantment and privilege which has long since vanished.
Charles Plante, who arranged this collection, is the director of Charles Plante Fine Arts, one of the leading British antique galleries specializing in watercolors, drawings and the decorative arts of the neoclassical period (1760-1840).

Plastic Nursery Rhyme Plaque - Jack & Jill
More Vintage Items
See Saw Margery Daw Plaque
This vintage 1969 nursery rhyme wall plaque measures about 8 inches wide by 5-3/4 inches high. Jill and Jack are running with their pail as a couple of bunnies and a bird look on. It is made of light blue hard plastic and includes the Jack and Jill Nursery Rhyme:
Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water; Jack fell down and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after.
This is old-store stock, unused and in great condition. The poem and the characters are raised from the plaque and are highlighted with golden accents. These were manufactured by Invicta Plastics and have lots of detailed information on the back regarding Invicta's company and locations. Some of these have the mounting tabs on the back that may or may not still be sticky. They were originally used to mount on the wall in a child's room - and would look great in a shadow box frame for a nostalgic touch.
There are so many sources of origin claimed for the Jack and Jill rhyme, that it is hard to know which is true. Many nursery rhymes began as satirical poems regarding the politics of the day. Still others were meant tell the stories of history to children, modified to help soften the harsher news.
Some say that Jack and Jill is the story of the beheading of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. Others insist that it was modeled after a fairy tale about 2 childhood friends in Norway. And still another associates it with the British monetary unit, gill, and the jackpot that ensued for the country.

Plastic Nursery Rhyme Plaque - Hey-Diddle-Diddle
Cat & Fiddle Button
This vintage 1969 nursery rhyme wall plaque measures about 7 inches wide by 5-1/2 inches high. The whole story is here:
Hey-diddle-diddle The cat and the fiddle. The cow jumped over the moon; The little dog laughed To see such sport, And the dish ran away with the spoon.
The cow jumping over the moon is the delight of so very many children of all ages! The actual meaning is a bit fuzzy. Some say that it represents the rise of Richard III to power. Others suggest that it represents the constellations in the spring sky. Still others attribute the little poem to a description of Queen Elizabeth I and her good friend Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester. She often referred to him as her lap dog.

Plastic Nursery Rhyme Plaque - See Saw Margery Daw
This vintage 1969 nursery rhyme wall plaque measures about 8 inches wide by 5-3/4 inches high. There is a sweet picture of a girl and a boy on a teeter-totter made of a log and plank, accompanied by a bunny and some birds. It is made of light blue hard plastic and includes the Margery Daw Nursery Rhyme:
See saw Margery Daw, Jacky shall have a new master; He shall have but a penny a day, Because he can't work any faster.
In researching the meaning of this rhyme, we have found that it probably wasn't meant for children in the first place. It was most likely a worker's rhyme used by men sawing large logs of wood using two-handled saws - to help them keep time. It's origin appears to be in the 18th century and Margery was a poor country name, and Daw meant an untidy person. Working rhymes generally contained references to wages and eventually made their way into children's lives through their working fathers - just as the see-saw did!

The Alphabet from A to Y with Bonus Letter Z!
The acclaimed entertainer and bestselling author Steve Martin and the wildly clever New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast team up in a weird, wonderful excursion through the alphabet. The ABCs have never had it so good. Created by two of today’s wittiest, most imaginative minds, The Alphabet from A to Y with Bonus Letter Z! is a sheer delight from A to Z.
In twenty-six alliterative couplets, Steve Martin conjures up much more than mere apples and zebras. Instead we meet Horace the hare, whose hairdo hides hunchbacks, and Ollie the owl, who owed Owen an oboe.
Roz Chast contributes the perfect visual settings for Martin’s zany two-liners. Her instantly recognizable drawings are packed with humorous touches both broad and subtle. Each rereading—and there will be many—delivers new delights and discoveries. There, hidden behind Bad Baby Bubbleducks, is a framed picture of a beatnik holding balloons; and the letter C finds clunky Clarissa all clingy and clueless adrift in a landscape cluttered with images ranging from a curiously comfortable clown to Chuck’s Chili stand.
A smart, laugh-inducing introduction to the alphabet for young children, The Alphabet from A to Y with Bonus Letter Z! will also enchant adults with its matchless mix of the sophisticated and the silly.

Message for an incredible Teacher
More Greeting Cards
Graphic Artist Janeen Koconis created this elegant note card from her artwork called She's a Teacher. Her elegant artwork includes a desk supported by the color spectrum and the letters of the alphabet. This wonderful imagery is accompanied by this special sentiment:
She is a teacher. She leads with her voice. She believes in the alphabet. She cares about language. Her strength is in her listening. The number line is where she stands. She knows the rhythm of syllables. She opens the imagination. Se Discovers new ideas. Visual displays make her smile (interactive projects and world maps too). Her commitment is her classroom.
The Top of the table reads:
She loves September (and synonyms, too). She is intuitive. Sensitive. Inspiring. And true. She makes the greatest kind of difference.
At the bottom:
She's You. (an incredible Teacher)
On the inside:
For all that you provide- Thank You
Now what teacher wouldn't love this message? The designer believes that a greeting card is not frivolous, rather, the opposite - that it has utility: a card can be a handshake or a kiss.
This is a square card in a square envelope - it may require additional postage.

The Everyman Book of Nonsense Verse
This hilariously readable collection of classic nonsense poetry, delightfully illustrated throughout, is a showcase of comic talent and sheer silliness.
The Everyman Book of Nonsense Verse features an eclectic spectrum of contributors ranging wildly from Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll to Hilaire Belloc, Ted Hughes, Ogden Nash, and Shakespeare, with illustrations by Mervyn Peake, Quentin Blake, Emma Chichester Clark, Spike Milligan, and the deliciously sinister Edward Gorey.
Such old favorites as The Owl and the Pussycat are accompanied by Macavity: The Mystery Cat and Jabberwocky, while Ted Hughes’s Wodwo sits alone by the bank of a stream in a state of innocence and curiosity that mirrors a child’s sense of wonder at the universe. Whether sweetly funny or deliciously naughty, these masterpieces of the art of the absurd will charm readers both young and old.
The fine cloth binding is accompanied by a silken ribbon self-bookmark, making it look like it costs substantially more - so perfect when gift-giving! This classic measures 8-3/10 by 6-1/5 inches, with 256 pages and a substantial number of black and white illustrations.

The Giving Tree
'Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy.'
So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.
Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave.
This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.
Meant for children of any age, this is truly one of our most favorite books, and has been for years.
The hard-covered book is slip covered and contains 64 pages that are wonderfully illustrated.

Little Nemo in the Palace of Ice and Further Adventures
More Little Nemo More Books
These strange and marvelously drafted cartoons recount the continuing dreams of Little Nemo, a small boy transported nightly into such fantastic worlds as the Palace of Ice, a pirate ship on the high seas and a miniature city - where time and again his adventures get him deep in trouble and nothing can possibly save him. . .except. . .waking up!
The masterpiece of Windsor McCay, the American cartoonist is an incredible succession of fantasies done in watercolor-like circus colors and with McCay's free-wheeling mastery of perspective drawing. The showmanship of these cartoons is matched by their psychological weirdness - and rightness - in which students of dreams have found the full catalogue of classic dream imagery: falls, flights, wild beasts in the forest and more!
McCay, who once shared a vaudeville stage with W.C. Fields and Houdini, was equally the comedian and the master of illusions!
This reprinting of 31 full-color pages from the Sunday comic section of The New York Herald, selected from the best numbers of the original 1907 series. It is to our knowledge the only bookful of Nemo strips reproduced in their original colors directly from the pages of the Herald. Children and adult comic readers, cartoonists and other artists and those interested in the history of this popular art will find Little Nemo one of the most astonishing and wildly entertaining comic strips ever created.
The reproduction includes strips from January 20, 1907 through April 28, 1907 and June 9, 1907 through September 22, 2007.
This trade paperback measures 10-1/4 by 14-1/4 inches with 32 pages of supremely reproduced illustrations.

Piffle's Mother Goose Dot Drawing Book
This quaint publication is faithfully reproduced from the antique original dated 1920. The Altemus Drawing Books are note merely books for amusement. They are designed for use in Kindergartens for training the child's eye and hand, and enlarging their mutual activities.
The young artists begin by drawing a straight line from dot No. 1 to dot No. 2, and thence proceed in straight lines to numbers 3, 4, 5 and so on to the end of the numbers, when the figure to be reproduced assumes form and life. When the young artists have thus connected all the numbers they will be surprised at the amusing pictures of boys and girls and their frolics and escapades - and the picture books will be books of their own creating - and hence always treasured.
Children must be encouraged no matter how crude their first efforts may be. Facility will come with practice; and with practice will come eye and hand equipment for free-hand drawing - that thus early acquired will never be forgotten, and that will be of advantage in all subsequent life. Making these tracings is not time wasted, far from it, as your own observation will testify.

Dedicated to all the little puppies who posed for the pictures in this book.
The unusual nostalgic black and white photos of real puppies were made possible only by patient unfailing kindness on the part of the photographer, Harry Whittier Frees, at all times.
If you plan on getting this for a youngster in your life, you might want to buy an additional one for yourself.

Crayon Pencils - NO More Waxy Build-up!
This exciting new medium is an excellent way for children (or adults, of course!) to spend hours coloring. There is no waxy flaking with these Smart Art crayon pencils - colors lay down more smoothly and the result is much brighter than with regular crayons or pastels. The novice artist, be s/he young or old, will more easily be able to layer and combine colors. The pencil crayons are very long-lasting pencils, making them a great value as well. They work much like grease-pencils or china markers of old, just unwrap the paper from the crayon by pulling the string. Because they are non-toxic, even little kids can color with them!

I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak
We cannot say enough wonderful things about this book. We originally bought it as a package deal with another book. This story was slimmer and so, picked it up first. We suggest, just as the review from Publishers Weekly indicates:
Don't start this compulsively readable book without enough time to read it straight through to the final page.
Meet Ed Kennedy—underage cabdriver, pathetic card player, and useless at romance. He lives in a shack with his coffee-addicted dog, the Doorman, and he’s hopelessly in love with his best friend, Audrey. His life is one of peaceful routine and incompetence, until he inadvertently stops a bank robbery. That’s when the first Ace arrives. That’s when Ed becomes the messenger. . . .
Chosen to care, he makes his way through town helping and hurting (when necessary), until only one question remains: Who’s behind Ed’s mission?
Winner of the 2003 Children’s Book Council Book of the Year Award in Australia, I Am the Messenger is a cryptic journey filled with laughter, fists, and love.
Although this 357-page paperback book is officially considered juvenile fiction, it is a superb read for any adult as well! Please read it!

Pollock's Britannia Toy Theatre
Teatro de Mexico Also Available
This toy theatre was originally created for the children of 1836! This true-to-form reproduction has been recreated in the same manner today. It is easy to assemble and has a dialogue based on Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves for the cardboard characters to act out. The action takes place in ancient Baghdad. This toy theatre gives parents an opportunity to help their children understand the world as it was and how things have changed.
Playing with the characters and acting out the play can provide an unequaled learning experience for the kids and should give them as much pleasure as it did their great-great-great grandparents.
