Mother's Day
Saint Gerard Majella was the son of a tailor in Italy. He was quite devout but suffered bad health and was not able to become a Capuchin monk as he wished. He later became a Redemptor monk and was falsely accused of impregnating a woman, who later recanted and repented. Because of this, Saint Gerard has become well known as the protector and patron of pregnancies, expectant mothers, childbirth and motherhood. He has also been known as a an antecedent for the falsely accused.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a treasured representation of the Blessed Virgin Mary that has been associated with a Byzantine icon or image of the same name. There is some controversy about the original date of the image - ranging from the 13th through the 15th centuries. The actual icon is in Rome and has been there since the late 1400s.
This is a highly recognizable image of the Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus in her arms. Catholics have prayed to the Blessed Mother to intercede on their behalf, with her son, Jesus, for help. Perhaps the reason for the popularity of the image is Mary's gaze directly at the viewer, rather than down at her son, conveying her care for the world at large and individuals in particular.
This image is particularly special to us as it was our Grandmother's favorite. Although we never knew her, we have heard of her patience, kindness and open arms of love. And, this lovely medal features a very detailed image of Our Lady.
It measures 1 inch high (including the loop) by 1/2 inch wide. We're showing two medals so that you might see each side.

Each package includes a sweet pin made of a silken ribbon and a milagro of a woman's countenance. Milagros, or Miracles, found in many areas of Latin America, are charms worn or posted on a church wall to petition the saints for help or protection. The charm, or milagro, is representative of the prayer. So, this lovely female milagro represents a petition to the saints to protect your loved one.
We've made it into a simple brooch with a bow, which may be worn or simply treasured. The pin is attached to a card of handmade paper and slipped inside a square handmade paper pouch decorated with a paper button. You might choose to write a prayer, secret or thank you note on the card before you give it away.
We're also including a vintage-style die-cut tag featuring a Victorian girl and a pansy, that may accompany your little gift.
We think this quite special, as it is more than just a material gift. It is the gift of your care and love when accompanied by your special sentiment.

Today's telegrams have little of the charm or impact of those of days gone by. These are the forms used in times past to record your telegram's message before turning it over to the telegrapher to send it.
The front of the form features a bouquet of carnations and a rose in pinks and reds, and reads:

What a nice way to send a special spring holiday message to a loved one. And it is ultimately perfect for your spring and Easter collages and assemblages.
These were produced in 1969 and they do show the appropriate fading. Most are in wonderful condition. In the upper right corner is the code:

which probably refers to the Western Union form number.

We were quite taken with these wonderful icon-style prints - the detail is gorgeous and the printing superb.
"Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” (Ruth 1:16)
These famous words of love and devotion were spoken by the Moabite woman Ruth to her mother-in-law, Naomi, a Hebrew widow. After the death of Naomi's husband, she became especially close to her sons and their wives - notably Ruth. Both of Naomi's sons died and she and their wives became even closer. Naomi encouraged them to go forth and find new husbands as they were young. But, this is a love story beyond husband and wife. Ruth encouraged Naomi to join them and finally Naomi became grandmother and guardian of Ruth's children as they grew. And, Ruth became the great-grandmother of King David.
Of course there is much more to this story, but we have always been taken by such stories of family commitment and love and the truth that families are not made of simple bloodlines after all. We are all connected in one manner or another by everyone who has touched our lives.
These lovely holy cards are a bit lighter weight than some others we offer, but the printing is absolutely outstanding. They are a convenient size for use as gifts or bookmarks - measuring 3-1/8 by 4-5/8 inches on heavy cream-colored paper. The back is blank except for a faint colophon at the bottom, leaving plenty of room for custom imprinting with your own message, or a place to write a note to a friend, or to inscribe an appropriate prayer

Portland artist Laini Taylor has created these wonderful note card ornaments. This is not only a card, but a gift ornament, too! You really have to see this wonderful card - the illustration does not do justice to such a treat!
This 5 by 7 inch card features a miniature bohemian collage style adornments, framed in a die cut window. The ornament is printed front and back with the image and text. The little ornament is just so very festive with beadwork, wire and ribbon.
The inside of the card has a light pattern, but no words - so you can add your own. Each card is packaged with a colorful string and button envelope. The ornament reads:

In the 1950s, the genre of TV Moms came into being, along with the first sitcoms (situation comedies). A post-war optimism prevailed and weekly TV shows portrayed Mom as the perfect housewife. Even while cleaning or cooking, she dressed impeccably, wearing a string of pearls, high heels and a smart apron. Besides running the household, she offered wise advice to her family.
The 1960s ushered in turmoil over issues such as the Viet Nam War and civil rights. Betty Friedan's writings triggered the movement for women's rights in both the home and the workplace. A few shows featured mothers who juggled a career with childcare. the '60s also saw the start of the large blended family. During the 1970s, gains in women's rights continued. Divorce was seldom mentioned, but domestic dramas now showed single, independent, outspoken moms coping with finances, day care and other challenges on their own (although there was usually a "dependable male" available). With the 1980s, came the desire to have it all. Many TV moms had careers outside the home and needed help dealing wiht their bills and children. Some openly expressed dislike for housework, cooking and domestic tasks, in stark contrast to the 1950s.
