The interior of each envelop is just as alluring! These were designed by Johanna Kriesel and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the glorious landmark (1889-1939).

Born in Brooklyn of a mother who was Puerto Rican and a father of Haitian descent, young graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat's legend has lived longer than he did. His works, often labeled neo-Expressionist, emerged from his graffiti and the beginnings of what is now known as hip-hop. A child of the sixties (born, in fact, in 1960), he was internationally recognized in his early 20s, and was gone by 27. He was a protégé of Andy Warhol.
His work is mostly untitled, as is this image, but it is generally known as Bird. We love the way the main focus of the image is flying, but the outer image may indicate that this is an angel

Once upon a time, almost everything that was offered as stationery was handmade. Oh, how we miss those times. Cards like these were die cut with mechanical (not electronic) die-cutters - one at a time. They were assembled by hand and tested for quality.
This lovely calendar clock card features a tiny cherub who will point out the day of the month for you. Dials behind the frontispiece indicate the Month and the Day of the Week. There is a banner on the bottom front for you to write a short message (and a place on the back with To: and From:).

Artist Kate Dawidziak is the artist who created this gorgeous note card featuring ravens or crows along with a lovely fairy with magnificent black wings. She is overlooking the water from atop a rocky precipice. Either snow or falling stars are around her as she thoughtfully contemplates.
The image on the front of the card is echoed mistily inside the card as well, muted enough for you to inscribe your message.

Cedar Waxwing Note Card
Rick Allen and his creative partner and wife Marian Lansky produce a miscellany of curious engravings and various and sundry other printed ephemerae. Rick's work has reached and perplexed a diverse audience. His illustrations have appeared in national magazines, annuals of illustration and even on a book cover for John LeCarre!
Rick attended a lot of reputable institutions of higher learning over many years but they couldn't really do much with him, so he's largely self-taught as an artist and printmaker and nobody else can really be held responsible. And responsible he is for this gorgeous notecard:

Swallows Note Card
Nick Wroblewski is a Midwest-based printmaker specializing in hand-cut wood block prints. His images are depictions of the natural world, carved from large blocks of wood and printed one color at a time. He uses a traditional method of carving away more material as the print progresses, resulting in the eventual elimination of the textured image on the block. He is very interested in art that is hand hewn, art that shows the gesture of a landscape, and art that speaks to the dynamic energy shared between all life.

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci is the archetype of the Renaissance man: he is best known as an artist and inventor, but also shone as a scientist, mathematician, engineer, anatomist, architect, botanist, musician and writer. In fact, in art, he was a portraitist, skilled in illustration, still life and landscapes, as well as sculpture in many media.
This is one of his best known drawings wrought in pen on paper in Florence around 1490. It features the anatomy of a man in symmetry (if symmetry even exists!). This image has been prominent on many items for years, even appearing on the Euro.

Maxfield Parrish and fellow artists of his time represented the Art Nouveau movement to some extent, but is best known for his oft-copied individualistic style. Parrish's art features extremely luminous colors. In fact, he even had a color named for him - Parrish Blue.
His technique was masterful, created by glazing - creating a base of blue and white, then varnishing, then adding a color, then varnish, etc.

3D Note Card - MC Escher - Drawing Hands
The only way we can think to describe these is way cool! Working in much the same way as the Currier & Ives stereoviews of the past, these operate on the venerable principle of the stereopticon. The viewer does not use the 3D-TV Glasses with one blue and one red lenses. These cards, instead have a nearly identical image for each lens - and of course, there is a cut-out for your nose. You can even adjust the focus - just squeeze the folded-out card.
There's a space for a short message and the whole card folds flat for mailing in the envelope provided. Perfect for the occasion when a gift is too much and a card too little!
Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was and is one of the world's most famous graphic artists. The left-handed artist is best known for his impossible structures and amazing three-dimensional woodcuts and drawings. He was consistently fascinated with congruency, perspective and technique: often spending hours experimenting.
Drawing Hands is one of Escher's most recognized works. It is absolutely fascinating that Escher was able to turn flat surfaces (drawings) into such spatially perplexing paradoxes. The hands are drawing the other's cuffs on paper. As they draw the detail in the hand becomes so great it appears to be jumping off the page to drew the other cuff on flat paper!

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was written by the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dogson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. Published in 1865, the book tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy land populated by all sorts of bizarre and troubled creatures.
The book is fraught with satirical allusions, and is one of the most striking examples of the genre of nonsense literature. The drawings for the book (and the wonderful cards in this set set) are by famed illustrator John Tenniel.
And so it becomes curiouser and curiouser! Each set includes eight die-cut blank note cards. Alice, the Red Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter and, of course the White Rabbit - two of each and four fun sticker sheets for you to create your own greeting card - with traditional sentiments like Happy Birthday and also such Alice-isms as Curiouser and Curiouser and more. Merry-go-round animals were often very beautiful, so stunningly painted. The finest were made in America in the first two decades of the 20th century. They were carved in wood and elaborately painted. Carousel animals have great appeal for many of us, not only for their lifelikeness and artistry, but also because they remind us of the freshness of childhood.
It is, and was, a wonderful thing to be able to safely ride on the back of a wondrous greyhound such as this lovely fellow.
Ungreeted inside, this clever notecard features a three-panel card. The die cut greyhound folds forward, the next background panel lifts up and the back panel features a blank area for your own note. The 7 by 5 inch card is accompanied by a silver metallic envelope.

Phrenology Head Die Cut Note Card
Even if you don't plan on sending this card, it's fun to study!. The card features a die cut human head that has been portioned (or, as modern terminology would have it, compartmentalized) into different areas of use, such as the moral, the perceptive, the animal, etc.
A more complete explanation is printed on the back of the card and descriptions of the individual attributes are printed inside the head!
The science of phrenology was quite the rage for study in the 19th century and this 5-3/4 inch card has been developed from early phrenology writings.

This black and white card is a reproduction of his famous woodcut Still Life & Street, originally created in 1937. A small street in Savona, Italy, was the inspiration for this special work. Famous for his enigmatic images, in this special work, there are two realities bound together in a seemingly realistic, yet honestly impossible, way. The street is seen from the window. Escher has made the outdoor houses appear as though the indoor books rest upon them. Escher has eliminated the border between the window and the street, allowing all the objects to merge, almost creating another dimension.

Blank Note Card - Hallowe'en Witch's Cauldron
This wonderful image from the Ken Brown Collection is entitled Witch Cauldron. The vintage image was originally copyrighted in 1912 by John Winsch. The young sorceress is joined in her steam by the ghosties and ghoulies and beasties and goblins alike. The sentiment reads:
In the firelight's gleam, by the moon's pale light, in the cauldron's steam on Hallowe'en night, all the ghosts and gobelins greet your sight!
Although this fantastic 5 by 7 inch card is blank inside, you can easily change it to a Greeted Card by adding a rubber-stamped Hallowe'en greeting inside. Of course, an envelope is included.

Note card by Kananginak Pootoogook - Raven's Dance
Kananginak Pootoogook has been involved with drawing and printmaking since the late 1950s. Since that time, Pootoogook’s work has been included in many major Inuit Art collections. He is a stone cut printmaker himself, often proofing and editioning his own art. He is a native of the Canadian province of Nunavut, located far north, very close to Greenland. This image is entitled Raven's Dance, a stonecut and stencil originally 26 by 24-7/16 inches. The original print was made by Qiatsuq Niviaqsi.

Letterpress Note card - Half Full
These letterpress notes are printed by hand on antique letterpresses. The illustrations are engraved into magnesium plates. The cards are placed by hand into the press where the images are transferred by relief method, creating an impression you can see and feel. What an inspirational message:

Note card - Starlit Crows in the Blue Night
This lovely note card is one of our favorites. A murder of crows at night. The starlit blue sky accents the black of their wings and adds a magical touch to the image. Frida entre Las Flores Note Card
Frida Kahlo's own image of herself was quite diverse - from a woman in men's clothes (quite risqué at the time) to this, the "little deer". As the deer, she sits amongst the flowers.
