La cucaracha, or the common cockroach, is not usually considered a totem animal, but in ancient (as well as current) folklore and symbolism, they represent the tenacity of survival in a life that might throw anything at you.
We love these hand-made tin ornaments because of their craftsmanship and their meanings. We are reminded of the continuity and connections in life.
Our little bug is made of tin and painted in vibrant colors (which may vary slightly). After S/he is hand cut and measures approximately 4-5/8 inches long by 3 inches wide.
This interesting tin ornament has been created by Mexican artisans in the old tradition and then hand painted or adorned. The tin is embossed and debossed for effect and this helps to make the roach appear as though s/he is already moving.

We like this little lady (or fellow) just because we love anything made with chenille! For some reason, pipe cleaners are one of our favorite craft items!
These were originally produced by Martha Stewart's company years ago, but are not quite old enough to be called old stock or vintage.
These were hand-made and measure only about 1 inch by 1/2 inch, although each may differ slightly in size due to their personal construction.

From the mid-20th century, our fun Santa ornaments are made of white and green tissue paper and are ready for you to add to your vintage holiday décor.
Measuring 4-3/4 inches high by about 2 inches in diameter (at the widest point), this little tree has been hand glittered and rests on a wire trunk secured in a hand-painted golden wood base. Each of the trees features the original MADE IN JAPAN sticker label on the bottom.
As with all honeycomb ornaments, the tissue is stiff, assuring that the ornament retains its basic shape. Each has been lightly covered with a white snow and a touch of golden glitter.
In great condition for their age, some of the ornaments show a touch of wear. We're showing two trees for illustration only.

Vintage Honeycomb Santa Ornament with Red Hat
Measuring about 4-1/2 inches high by 2-1/8 inches wide, each ornament has been hand glittered and the paper facial features have been added by hand. His little nose is made of a little holly stamen!

Vintage Bottle Brush Christmas Wreath with red Pine Cone and Lots of Glitter
We can't really figure out why we love these old ornaments so much. But, we do. This fantastic wreath hails from the mid-20th century and has everything you would want in such a collector's piece. It is bright green and dusted with faux snow and then loaded with aluminum foil glitter.
Accented by a red satin bow, the real pine cone has been tinted red as well. Even the vintage hanger is still attached to some of these!
The wreath is 3-1/4 inch in diameter and about 1 inch thick.

Vintage Silver Mercury Glass Bead Triple Spray Stem with Silver Tips

We just love these sprays of tiny mercury glass beads - the older the better! These hail from the 1950s or earlier and show some sign of aging. Each spray measures about 6 inches long. Each stem is comprised of 3 beaded wires with silver foil tips. Then all three have been wrapped together to form a spray of sorts.
Some of the beads are missing, others have aged a bit. We think this a part of their charm. Most of these still have the original Made in Japan tissue tag intact!
You might also choose to dismantle the spray and use the tiny beads to make vintage-style ornaments with authentic vintage pieces. Or, you can separate the 3 pieces in the spray.

Little Vintage Hand Tinted Praying Angel Ornament
Angel lovers and holiday collectors alike will fall in love with this sweet angel with her hand held to her breast in prayer.
Made of hard plastic in the 1970s or 1980s, she was then tinted or painted by hand. You'll be happy to see the variation from angel to angel. Her little wings are pure white, as they should be for any angel. The angels' gowns are a shade of red that has a vintage feel to it. We are quite taken with the subtle shadows of the gown created by the artisans. Her hair is light brown.

Kitschy Plastic Angel with Removable Wings
If you prefer this little angel to be a baby, just remove the wings and use them separately for a different project! The wings have a tiny loop at the top so that you might use the angel as an ornament (or, just the wings as an ornament.
These are new, sturdy plastic and are a bit whiter than they appear in the photograph.

Their organza net gowns are certainly celestial as each has been glittered by hand. They might be wearing the palest of pink or ivory or white! Fashioned from reclaimed metal, mostly old oil drums, these magnificent milagro-style crows seemed to be made just for us. Whether it be a dove or a crow, it matters not much, so we choose always to believe that black birds are crows, to protect our souls. Because of that, we choose to believe that they are miracles of nature and, for that reason, to us it is a milagro.
Each one has been hand cut, cleaned and hammered, then coated with sealant for protection. The crow measures just over 3-1/4 inches from beak to tail and just under 3-1/4 inches from bottommost tail feathers to highest wingtip. There is a hole for hanging like a milagro. And, if you cinch the nail tightly, you can change the position of the crow easily as though s/he is flying
Please allow for some variation in size, decoration and the placement of the hole for hanging. Created from recycled metals, the artisans have worked around the metal they've found to create their final products, so much depends on their working resources.

Spun Glass Angel Hair

Trimming a holiday tree became prominent during the Victorian times, and spun glass angel's hair or fairy's hair like this was on of the favorites then as it is now! It adds a touch of elegant whimsy to any display - especially when there are electric lights. The soft glow of the cloud-like hair enhances any lights - either white or color.
Still handmade in the traditional manner by a family company, each bag contains 15 grams of non-inflammable super-fine spun glass fibers. Although such spun glass hair is available from other sources, the German spun glass angel hair is truly curly hair. It does not compress easily and will stay curly. Use it as you would tinsel for special effects.
*****Please be careful when decorating or crafting with Spun Glass products. Remember, they are made of glass and might cause some irritation. Vintage Chenille Praying Mantis
Contrary to popular thought, the Praying Mantis is not a type of grasshopper. In fact, are not even in the same insect order - they are actually closer to a cockroach or a termite! They are aptly named as their sitting position often resembles someone in prayer. However, the same bug might easily be called preying mantis, as this is a predatory insect.
The praying mantis is revered in some cultures and in others s/he is feared. But, we're quite sure that you'll just be taken with our fellow, as he is made of soft wired chenille.
He is old store stock - never used - and measures about 2-1/2 inches long in the position in the picture. Of course, you might choose to maneuver his wiry body into another position, and then of course he'll be shorter or longer.

Vintage Chenille Dragonfly with Organdy Wings & Googly Eyes

This lovely dragonfly has been created with so much care that s/he has survived over 60 years! It hails from the 1950s. An old warehouse find, these dragonflies were stored in their original boxes, so each is in fantastic shape!
The body is made of lettuce-colored chenille and features hand wired organdy double wings in a pretty blue. Our dragonfly's googly eyes are glued to the round head with such care that s/he appears to be looking at you.
Mostly every one we have comes with the original Made in Japan label.
When posed as pictured, s/he measures just about 2-3/4 inches Long. And from wing to wing (these can be spread out as little or as much as you like), the measurement is about 2 inches. Each arrives on a fabric covered green stem that is about 4 inches long.

Bunch of 12 Vintage Glittery Sugar Bell Ornament Picks

Such lovely old store stock ornament picks are harder and harder to find. So we were absolutely delighted when we found these little bundles of bells. The petite bells are plastic and have been dusted in sugary white glitter and edged with golden metal glitter. Each bell is separately wired with an added sparkly ball for a clapper. Then a dozen of these sweet ornaments have been twisted together into a bunch.
These appear to have been assembled by hand, so please allow for some variation in glittering and twisting!
The bells are about 1/2 inch in diameter at the bottom and about 5/8 inch long. We've added a bit of unraveled crinkle wire for a special extra touch.

From the lovely Mexican state of Guerrero (which includes the resort of Acapulco and the silversmithing town of Taxco), comes this wonderful hand cut and hammered copper ornament. The image is of a bird woman. The detailed embossing and debossing from the hammering is really special. The image has been painted to accent the hammered likeness.
Each ornament hangs from a copper chain that allows it to be hung as permanent décor. But, it also makes a nice holiday ornament as well.
Each of these is hand made in all aspects, so please expect some variation. The true artisanship of the maker shows in each and every one of these angel ornaments.
The approximate measurements are 2-3/4 inch high by 3-1/4 inches wide. The hammered embossing gives the ornament depth, but it's hard to measure. The hanging chain adds an additional 2 to 2-1/2 inches to the height.

Vintage old-store stock, probably from the 1940s to 1950s, these wooden figures represent the man himself, Santa Claus. He is made entirely of wood and each little ornament has been hand painted, so please allow for artistic variation.
Measuring in at just over 1-1/8 inch high, his arm span is just over 3/4 inch. The base is about 3/8 inch in diameter. The base is hollow, which helps him to stand up quite well.

Vintage Lettuce-Colored Chenille Snail with Genuine Shell & Googly Eyes
What a gorgeous escargot! S/he is just so sophisticated! Really, how adorable is this old stock chenille snail? It hails from the 1950s. An old warehouse find, these snails were stored in their original boxes, so each is in fantastic shape!
The body is made of lettuce-colored chenille and features a wired tulle back and a smart (and genuine) mother of pearl shell. Our snail's googly eyes are perched atop two wired stems and can be easily maneuvered for that perfect position.
When posed as pictured, s/he measures just about 2 inches wide. Of course, the shells are natural, so their sizes vary a bit. They are so stunning - when you hold the shell up to the light and move it, the colors vary from aqua to pink to turquoise, just so lovely!

Our Omar now watches over us as an Angel Cat, and that's why we're so fond of these lovely tin ornaments. Each has been hand cut and painted in a classic style - matte with lovely accents. All the cats are black with ivory and golden wings. But, because they are handmade, of course, each is subtly different than the next.
The lovely kitty is deep black with both painted and hammered accents to create dimension. The wings have been separately made and soldered to create a certainly ethereal appearance. On the back, a self hanger may remain as is (so that you can hang the kitty without seeing the loop) or, you can bend the hanger carefully up to hang it traditionally as an ornament.

Now, we're not really sure why these were created in the first place, but they are definitely unique! Each package contains a set of four chenille animals: [what we think are] a lion, a cat, an elephant and a long-eared dog.
Each figure's body is constructed of vintage chenille and a waxy-paper face is glued on front. The colors vary, but are mostly earthy tones of rust, red and forest.
Use these as is for package decoration, embellished ornaments and whimsical additions to your artwork....But better still, remove the faces and replace with vintage holiday scraps for extraordinary results!

Our little froggy is so very happy - and we know why. He's no longer cooped up in that old cardboard box that held him all these years. Our chenille frog was made in Japan in the 1950s and features wonderful googly eyes and a red tongue.
S/he measures about 2 inches long (the body), but because the legs are repositionable, you can change the frog's length and width as you please.

From the 1950s, our small white tissue paper honeycomb Christmas balls are ready for you to add to your vintage holiday décor.

Golden Dresden Ornament Base
This wonderful heavy-weight golden dresden base is just what you need to create old-fashioned paper ornaments for Christmas, Valentine's Day and more. Add a little scrap picture with a dab of glue to the center (or even a Victorian-style sticker), maybe a few pieces of angel hair or krausbouillion and you'll create a brand new heirloom!
The base of the ornament measures about 3-1/4 inches in diameter (from one point to the opposite). The loop on top is for hanging and adds about 1/4 inch more. This lovely dresden is golden on both sides and is weighty enough to be the base for a complex design.
The embossing on these reliefs is superb, as is the cutting. These are made in the same fashion as they have been for many, many decades!

Thank goodness for the people who kept whole boxes of wonderful holiday treasures - and then decide to part with them! We were delighted to come upon several boxes of these wonderful glass ball ornaments on chenille stems. We think them to be from the early 1950s. They were from both Dexter's (a supplier to Lee Wards) and Woolworths.
The spheres measure about 3/4 to 7/8 inch in diameter and have 4-inch pipe-cleaner stems, making them easy to add to a package, ornament or tree.

Old-fashioned spun cotton mushrooms have graced Christmas trees, corsages and other items for decades. These lovely amanita mushrooms are created of spun cotton and made by the same family business that made the vintage red and brown mushrooms we offer. The company has really gone out of business, but agreed to make some of these green mushrooms especially for the American trade.
These new stock mushrooms measure about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the stem to the top of the cap and could very easily pass for the vintage ones as the technique is exactly the same..
The green caps are hand stained to look real. They are are highly lacquered and are dotted with little white spots - just like the real mushrooms! The stems are wire wrapped in green paper.
These pretty mushrooms might really be toadstools, not to be eaten in the wild - and, our spun cotton version should not be eaten either! Our striking tin ornament is cut by hand in Mexico and then hand embossed and painted. Technically, it is a Christmas ornament, but we think it is perfect for anytime. Each is different (but the painting and design are similar) as the ornaments are wrought by artisans who treasure the artistry of generations of Mexican craftsmen. The ornaments are about 6-1/2 inches wide, but, because they are handmade, they will vary somewhat in size.

Vintage Honeycomb Santa Claus Ornament
Enchanting as he is on his own, Santa is never more wonderful than when represented by an old-time vintage ornament. This is one of the best we've seen. We love paper honeycomb ornaments - most of them arrived after World War 2, mostly in the 1950s and 1960s. They were created in Japan, the USA and in Germany.
We believe this fellow to be Japanese because of the styling, but we can't be absolutely certain. In one hand, he holds a tiny sign saying:
Merry X'mas
In his other hand, he holds a tiny chenille candy cane. His beard and eyes are made of felt and there are all kinds of other little details.
We have so very few of these: they were from an estate sale, and, although they are not brand new old stock, they were lovingly treasured.
You might hang him on your holiday tree by adding a golden thread, but he sits on his flat bottom nicely. You might also add a small cardboard circle with a non-damaging glue-dot to sit him even straighter. He measures just under 3 inches high by almost 1-1/2 inch in diameter.
He is in fantastic condition for his age. Angel hair not included.

Isn't this little fellow a dear - sitting in a cloud of spun glass angel hair snow? Our little flocked snowman ornament hails from the 1950s and sports a little red chapeau! He features tons of details including a broom natural straw broom tucked under his vintage white chenille arms and a pretty little green scarf.
You might hang him from his golden thread or add a hanger of your own. He would be oh-so-cute on a package - especially if the giftee loves vintage items as much as you do! He measures about 2 inches high and about 1-1/4 inch wide, depending on the position of his little arms!

Old-Timey Santa Claus on Honeycomb Bell Ornament
We adore vintage and antique holiday ornaments - from any holiday! But, when we can't find them (or afford them), we love the reproductions. Some such reproductions are hard to find and many are collectible themselves - just like our Santy sitting on a Christmas-red honeycomb bell!
We were charmed with this wonderful die cut and embossed Santa Claus who is loaded with toys and holly. He is seated atop an old style honeycomb bell that opens and closes for display and storage - just like the older ones. He features a tiny golden thread for hanging him from your tree or garland - or, as you can see in our illustration, he can sit nicely on your mantle or in another display.

This heart features a sunflower. The sunflower was treasured by the Incas. In examining the relics of their culture, many jewelry disks and religious items feature images of sunflowers. Many indigenous Native Americans (both North and South) sprinkle sunflower seeds on the graves of their beloved ancestors. The sunflower is not only beautiful, but many parts of it are life-sustaining and can be used as food.

Although these ornaments are meant to represent the devil, we're not so sure as they are all quite comical and fun! The artist, Jimenez, has sculpted natural materials and clay to create his masks. So there are so very few that look even close to the same, so we are quite lucky that we have some that are quite similar. These are miniature versions of the masks displayed on so many walls and worn during so many holiday celebrations.
Each time we order these scary but fun masks, we get completely different designs. Even though some are our favorites, we may never see them again!

Vintage Christmas Stocking Tie-On
Each of these vintage Christmas stocking ornaments for packages has been made by hand. Cut nicely from felt flocking, each little stocking has been decorated with golden Dresden Trims and chenille pipe-cleaners. From inside the top of the stocking peaks a vintage holly berry and lacquered holly leaves.

It is so much more fun to make vintage-style Christmas ornaments with real vintage parts. This lovely glass pinecone ornament was made in Germany during the mid-20th century. It shows its age only in a patina that has darkened the white to more of an eggshell color. Covered with glitter, this sweet pinecone measures 3 inches long by 1-1/4 inch at the widest. The cap is silver as is the hanging loop.
Each of these ornaments was hand-blown and then hand finished with frosting and glitter, so there may be a very slight variation from one to the next.
Although elegant itself, it would make a terrific base for adding additional scraps, Dresdens and krausbouillion to make your own very special piece.

Handmade Puffy Flying Heart Ornament

Gorgeous ornaments like these can only be made by hand. Created from clay, wood and papier mâché, each is different from the next because of the craftsmanship.
The hearts may be blue, purple, pink or another bright color and wings are vibrant and accented in glitter. The central heart measures 1-7/8 inch wide by 2 inches long. At the top center of every heart is a hanging loop.
Wingspan is 5-1/4 inches. The wings are adorned alike on both sides. On each heart is a central flower accented by leaves and filigree and a touch of sparkly glitter. Such painting is in the colonial style and is treasured world wide. It is interesting how this manner of painting resembles North American tole painting as well as Central European folk painting, bringing the world closer through shared artistic styles. The heart back is a solid color.

Paper Angel Ornament
Made in the tradition of vintage Victorian whimsy ornaments, this modern angel is just stunning. Her gown and wings are made of canvas paper and feature Christmas song lyrics. Some of the writing is upside down and we almost returned them. However, we've discovered that the hint of words, when printed upside down, is actually more lovely in pattern and less distracting when looking at the entire piece.
She is trimmed with golden Dresdens and other paper and fabric trims. Her face is quite modern and it seems that she might just be shy.
This is a stuffed ornament, giving it dimension and elegance. It would be as lovely as a package trim as it would be on a holiday tree.

Here at the SilverCrow atelier, we are quite fond of Hallowe'en all year long. Actually, we're quite fond of every holiday all year long. If we could, we'd decorate for every occasion all at once. Alas, we cannot, but we can help you do it - or, at least plan ahead!

The wooden base is a plump roundish pumpkin and remains balanced, despite its shape. The orange of the pumpkin has a weathered look, but you might even want to paint it another color, such as blood-red, for a vampire tree.
But, black is also elegant, so why not transition the base from season to season or holiday to holiday with a tree skirt or some tinsel?
The little tips are a subtle orange, but once you add lots of red, they appear to change to red - at least to us....or maybe we just wanted them to do that!

Handmade Nickel-Plated Angel Heart Milagro
This milagro is absolutely stunning. The flaming heart is bordered with angels. One on either side and a cherub below. The nickel-plating is bright and shiny and adds to the elegance. The milagro measures just about 3 inches wide by a little over 3 inches long. There is a hole at the top for hanging.
To hang this ornament in the traditional manner, simply hammer a nail through the top. Or, you can thread a ribbon or cord through the hole and hang it in that manner.

Really Neat Vintage-Style Tin Fire Truck Ornament
So, you ask what's the difference between a Fire Engine and a Fire Truck. Well, some people use the terms interchangeably, but they shouldn't. Generally speaking, a Fire Engine is a Pumper, that can move water from the source through the hose to the fire. The source might be the Fire Engine's own tank, a fire hydrant, a tanker truck, or even a swimming pool or river. The Fire Engine might also carry portable ladders, axes, nozzles and will definitely carry hose. Today's modern Fire Engines are multi-purpose vehicles that sometimes have a permanent ladder as well.
Fire Trucks, on the other hand, are transporters of fixed, permanent ladders, often called Aerials. They might also carry a telescoping platform. Sometimes these Fire Trucks carry limited hose and some of the older ones might even pump, but today's apparatus is much more specialized.
So, this is definitely a Fire Truck ornament. It's permanent ladder tells us the full story. We love this older-style ornament made of tin lithographed with colorful yellow, grey and black accents on a mostly red truck. The model for this ornament isn't so old as you can see by the hood. But it's definitely styled after old-fashioned tin litho ornaments from so long ago.

When you're making a fairyland, you'll need all sorts of mushrooms. And these are the ultimate. Handmade of silken fabric, this grouping of three (two small and one large) are on stems about 5 inches high. The largest mushroom cap measures 1-1/2 inch in diameter and is about 5/8 inch thick. The two smaller ones measure 1 inch in diameter and about 1/2 inch high.
These are wonderfully made with the variegations in the fabric mimicking the real mushrooms that they imitate. There is an alligator clip at the bottom for attaching to your project.
These were originally made for the millinery trade, but we think they have so very many other uses.

Vintage Chenille Snowman Pick with Candy Cane and Top Hat
These little fellows are each perched on a wooden pick. And, even though these have been used before, they are in pretty good vintage condition.
Each one is made of chenille and topped with a spun cotton head with hand painted features. His hat is made of shiny black cardstock and topped with a black chenille stem to create his top hat. He is carrying a huge candy cane and right at his neckline is a tiny mercury glass bobble perhaps to represent a bow tie.
Some of the heads have been stamped, Japan on the back to indicate their origin.
Each measures about 3 inches high (not including the stick, which extends another inch or more from the bottom of his chenille base).
Our snowman is a bit repositionable, but please be careful with him, he is from 1950 or earlier!

We had elves like these hanging on our Christmas trees back in the 1950s. Were we ever happy to find these reproductions to offer to you! Each little elf is made of a real pine cone that has been dusted with glitter and faux snow to look more wintery. He's holding a tiny bottle brush tree in one hand and ringing his festive bell with the other.
His face is made of real paper pulp, his arms and legs are vintage-style chenille and the fuzzy beard is made of spun cotton. He's about 5 inches high and 3 inches wide - if you position his arms differently you'll be able to add or subtract a bit of width.
Each is all glittery and can either stand on his little circle of snow, or hang from the attached golden thread.
Although these are mass-produced items, they are each made by hand - and are even hand painted! We fell in love with this little fellow and thought you might, too.

We just can't get enough chenille pipe cleaner ornaments and other creations! This is one of the best we've seen! Just the way the ribs are formed is exciting enough, but the knees and hips! What a wonderful design. We can't say for sure if this was based on an ornament of old, but it certainly is reminiscent of the ornaments made in the earlier 20th century.
The little skull is a reproduction die-cut scrap just like those of the Victorian era. Although his bones can easily be manipulated as any pipe-cleaner can, we suggest you be careful not to rearrange the bones too much, or it might be difficult to return him to his original wonderful self! He comes with a little string hanger attached to his neck!

Chenille pipe cleaners are a staple for crafting and have been for many years! Our ornery little devil measures about 2-1/2 inches high (not including the hanging string. Now you can maneuver his legs to create a new position if you like, but that might alter his height as well. His tri-pointed tail is also movable as are his arms.
The little face is a reproduction die-cut scrap just like those of the Victorian era. You can probably consider this little fellow a Krampus, too!

Set of 6 Vintage Blue Chenille Bunnies

These sweet little baby bunnies are made of blue chenille and paper with little specks for eyes. Each set of six sits atop a strip of cardboard - just the way they arrived. This set of old store stock chenille rabbits are quite the find. We've packaged them in a new plastic display box with some shredded paper grass. They are in great condition for their age. We're guessing that these were originally sold in the 1950s or 1960s.

Old-fashioned spun cotton mushrooms have graced Christmas trees, corsages and other items for decades. These lovely vintage amanita mushrooms were created of spun cotton back in the mid-20th century and are in wonderful condition. These old store stock beauties measure about 3/4 inch from the bottom of the stem to the top of the cap.
The brown caps are hand stained to look real. They are are highly lacquered and are dotted with little white spots - just like the real mushrooms! The stems are wire wrapped in green paper.

We at SilverCrow are big time fans of anything made with chenille pipe cleaners (aka chenille stems). Grandfathers used to clean their pipes with these and we'd scarf a few to make little ornaments of our won.
These old fashioned bunny ornaments are in distress (oops! we mean they've been distressed) - to look so vintage! Each one measures about 4-inches high, but, because they are bendable - you might choose to pose them in a different positions! Each carries a a little carrot (probably trying to imitate that famous Bugs!)
The bunnies' heads are made of a reproduction scrap that has been cut neatly to resemble the Victorian scraps of old.

Authentic Vintage German Spun Glass Wheel
We at SilverCrow were lucky to find a source in German for real, vintage spun glass components so that you can create Victorian style ornaments for Christmas, Valentine's Day, or just because you want to make them!
These pieces were made by hand in a factory in Lauscha, Germany well before World War II. They are certainly elegantly crafted by highly-skilled artisans who were undoubtedly proud to work.
Spun Glass is a form of fiberglass, so it can be irritating and is not recommended for children. And, even though these are in excellent shape, because of the age of the pieces, we suggest you be quite careful when using them for crafting.
These wheels are traditionally used as backgrounds to ornaments (see our Vintage Santa Ornaments). We love them, because you can use them for any occasion - use a Butterfly Scrap in the center for a spring ornament! These also make fantastic halos for saints and angels.
