Japanese Sumi Ink in Glass Topped Box

Close-Up

High Quality Sumi Ink Stick in Glass-Topped box

More Paints & Pigments

Sumi ink has been made in the traditional fashion - from burnt wood - for more than 3,000 years. Asian artisans process the wood residue from burnt wood into solid sticks of ink in the same manner today - just a bit more quickly with modern equipment. The pine soot from pine or vegetable oils is mixed with animal or fish glue. The glue insures that the ink can be molded. It is then dried to form a well-shaped solid block which. To use the ink, it  must be ground into a stone - and water added to it (usually with a Water Dropper).

Nothing is more special for creating the many subtle shades of black and grey, that characterizes traditional Sumi painting.

Even if you're not a Sumi artist, you might not be able to resist - this makes a perfect embellishment for a special Asian assemblage or collage. Each stick has the same characters on the back and features different flowers on the front.

We're showing 3 sticks for comparison. The box is just lovely and might be used for a small shrine or other altered art project.

The box measures 4-1/4 inches by 1-1/4 inch by 1/2 inch deep. The wrapped stick is slightly smaller at 3-13/16 inches long by 15/16 inch wide by 6/16 inch deep.

NOT FOR CHILDREN

Ivory Traditional Supple Sealing Wax that Mails Without Breaking!

More Adhesives & Other Things that Stick

More Paints, Pigments & the Like

More Weddings & Anniversaries

Unbelievably, this sealing wax does not crack, chip or break - even when mailed on a postcard! The illustration background includes a seal that was actually sent via the United States Postal Service on a postcard - fully exposed to everything the transport has to offer.

Supple wax can be cut, so it is often used on bottles. Letters and cards with supple wax seals can be sent through the mail if the letter is hand-canceled. (Although the seal might make it through the cancelling machine, it might damage the machine itself.)

Each stick measures 3-3/8 inches long by 3/8 inch thick and 3/8 inch wide. Depending on your use, each stick produces 15 to 20 seals!

You'll be surprised how closely this resembles traditional wax. Made by J.Herbin for over 300 years, sealing wax is still as exciting as it was when used officially. Supple wax is much the same, but designed for modern times.

To use supple wax, heat the end with a match or a propane torch lighter (as for your grill). The lighter is lots easier to use! Be sure to do this heating over the your project paper in the right spot, because you won't be able to move it later. Once you've melted a bit of the wax (in a puddle). Once you think you have enough wax dropped, use the stick itself to stir the puddle into the shape you desire (probably the shape of your seal).

Although not necessary with supple wax, we've found it best to moisten you sealing wax seal before actually making your mark. You can do this by blowing on the seal itself, by an ice cube, etc. Impress your seal into the wax after it has cooled a bit. Hold it still for about 5 seconds, and then peel your seal slowly away from the wax. You'll need a bit of practice to create a crisp seal that pleases you. Supple wax melts at a hotter temperature than traditional wax, so it cools more slowly as well.

Use with caution. Never leave burning or hot wax unattended. Not for children.

Old-Fashioned Natural Mica Glitter - in Black

Close-Up

Black Mica Glitter Flakes

More Mica and other Pigments & Paints

This is the really neat old-fashioned, original glitter that was used for holiday decorations of all types since the end of the 19th century. The white form of mica glitter is usually used to imitate snow or to add an iridescent glittery effect. We can only imagine what you might be able to create with BLACK MICA!

Mix mica with paint, ink, glue, any artistic media. Sprinkle it on your holiday decorations. Grind it. Mix it with a tiny amount of any powdered pigment (including the cost-effective tempera pigment) to give it color. Experiment. Have fun!

We've packaged the mica in reusable plastic jars that measure about 2 inches in diameter and 2 inches high. The mica is quite lightweight, so a little goes a long way!

So, you'll have plenty for lots of projects. For Hallowe'en, gothic and other projects with a black or midnight theme, our Black Mica might be just perfect!

Mica is not toxic in its natural state, but it can be an irritant, so please use caution. There is some color transference with black mica, so be careful!

L'Écriture Vénitienne Carnivale - Venetian WRiting Set with Glass Pen & J Herbin Ink

The earliest glass objects known are from ancient Egypt dating from about 1500 BC. By the 11th century, Venice, well known for the quality and mastering skills of its craftsmen, became the European center for glass making. By the late 13th century, to protect Venice from fire and more destruction, the Venetian Republic ordered the destruction of all the foundries within the city and glassmakers were removed to the nearby island of Murano. With the growing demand, Murano gained the reputation in the 15th century as the European center for glassmaking, which lasted well until the 17th century. Murano is world-renowned for the quality of its glass as well as the elaborate designs.

We are in love with such lovely glass pens as the one included in this set. The spiraling allows the ink to flow so smoothly and effortlessly as you write or draw.

Each lovely boxed set includes:

* 1 plume de verre (spiral handled frosted glass pen)
* 1 flacon d'encre (bottle of ink)
* 1 rouleau de parchemin (sheet of paper parchment)

This lovely gift set will please even the most discerning of pen collectors and artists as well as the beginner and, of course, the romantic!

J. Herbin is the oldest name in current production of fountain pen inks in the world, having begun at his shop on the Rue des Fosse Saint-Germain in Paris in 1700.

These exquisitely charming inks are subtly scented and are presented in elegant semi-frosted bottles. Because they are synthetically scented and do not use pigments for coloring, they are perfect for fountain pens and fountain rollers as well as glass and other dip pens.

Fashioned with great care in the tradition that began in 19th century Italy, J Herbin and other ink makers collected scents from the perfume industry and added them to their inks. These are known as Les Subtiles.

Each of the five scents match the ink color:

Amber scented with Orange
Red scented with Rose
Violet scented with Violet
Blue scented with Lavender
Green scented with Apple

Each frosted bottle offers you 10ml of non-toxic, pH neutral, lightfast, water-based ink. Made with all natural dyes, the ink flows smoothly and is fast drying. And the scent will remain with your note for quite a long time. How perfect for those billets doux and other missives of love.

Sealing Wax Seal Impressions & Other Stamps

J.Herbin King's Sealing wax is made from natural elements: pine resin, ground limestone, lacquer, and a cochineal dye for vibrant and deep color.

This same wax has been used by royalty to seal the most important of documents for centuries. Generations of remarkable people, from Louis XIV to Coco Chanel, have used this such sealing wax, and it is well known around the world as one of the highest quality sealing waxes ever made.

M. Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax. His special lacquer formula improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom.

Then as today, sealing wax was used for documents and correspondence, but also in decoration and bottling. J. Herbin has supplied Chanel from its beginning with wax used for finishing touches on their perfume bottles.

Each stick measures 5 inches long by 3/8 inch thick and 1/2 inch wide. Depending on your use, each stick produces 10 to 20 seals!

Made by J.Herbin for over 300 years, sealing wax is still as exciting as it was when used officially.

What a great find this is! Each 6-1/4 inch wide vintage ink blotter advertises a specialty fountain pen for the working woman of the 1920s! Imagine!

The illustration features an old time nurse (cap and all) and doctor. Both are writing on medical charts as the patient recuperates in bed. Unused old store stock in excellent condition.

The description is right on the blotter. And the nurse is obviously using one of these really neat pens:

Moore's
Sautoir Fountain Pen

The ladies' favorite for professional, business
and social use. With silk neck ribbon
and gold or silver mountings, $4.25 up.
Self-filling and non-leakable.

The pen is illustrated as though it is writing the advertisement itself in script:

Moore's won't leak

The sautoir (French for necklace) pen is perfect - wouldn't that be great even today - so that no one will walk away with your favorite pen! After all, in 1920, $4.25 was quite dear. That would be $45.26 today!

Of course you can use this great little piece of history for its intended purpose - to blot your ink, or, of course it makes a great collector's item.

J. Herbin is the oldest name in current production of fountain pen inks in the world. Since we were children, we were enamoured with scented stationery and inks. Among those inks were those created by J Herbin. We are so very proud to offer this wonderful ink to you now!

This exquisitely charming ink is lightly scented and presented in an elegant semi-frosted bottle. The ink is appropriate for fountain pens since they are synthetically scented and do not contain pigments.

Fashioned with great care, scented inks are inspired by a tradition that began in Italy in the 19th century. J. Herbin and other manufacturers used to collect different scents from the perfume industry and add them to their inks. Known as Les Subtiles (The Subtle), inks were known to match fragrance and color. This wonderful blue ink subtly reminds us of the lavender fields of Provence.

Liquitex Gesso

Gesso - 8 ounce Bottle (23 ML)

Liquitex Acrylic Gesso is a permanent, non-yellowing, flexible and water-resistant gesso, once it dries.

We use this on our paper tapes, kraft papers, manila envelopes and industrial tags, to create a rough surface. Although gesso is traditionally sanded before painting, we don't. We like the surface “tooth” the un-sanded gesso creates.

Easily thinned with water and may be mixed with acrylic colors. Do not mix with turpentine.

Reckitt's Crown Blue Bluing Squares

Close-Up

Reckitt's Crown Blue Bluing Squares for Laundry and Art

For centuries, bluing has been used to disguise the yellowing or tell-tale grey in white cotton clothes - long before today's synthetic laundry additives! This was used in "the wash" (hand washing) - not in a modern washing machine. Colored with ultramarine, imported from France, this was a wondrous find for anyone wanting their clothes and linens to appear bright white, including royalty. It is safe to use, made of the coloring mixed with some washing soda to stabilize the square.

To use the bluing in your hand wash, is is usually placed in a muslin or other cloth bag, or simply wrapped and tied in a piece of cloth, so that the bluing doesn't directly touch the fabric of your clothing and linens.

Bluing has also replaced the original toxic bluestone in magical spells as it has the same gloriously bright blue color - and because it is safe!

Now, here's the fun part, try using this little square in your artwork. You'll have to experiment - use it to whiten, to blue, pulverize it and use as a pigment. We could go on and on - but we think it best to just to play with it in your studio.

Each square is approximately 1 by 1 by 1/2 inch. Instructions are printed on each square:

Wrap Blue in cloth.
Stir while squeezing
the Blue in the last
rinsing water. Dip
articles separately for
a short time; keep
them moving.

Dragon's Blood Ink

Close-Up

Dragon's Blood Ink

Of course this ink is not really made of dragon's blood. In the ancient tradition of writing out magical spells, petitions, prayers and wishes, the strongest entreaties were written in blood. Dragon's Blood Ink is made of Dragon's Blood Resin, from the red sap of the Dragon Palm Tree.

Over the centuries since Medieval times, scented red inks were gradually substituted for the original inks. Our 1 ounce bottle of Dragon's Blood Ink is still made from the Dragon Palm resin. Traditionally it used for talismans and petitions involving power, protection, courage and spirituality. The same resin is used in other forms for natural healing remedies, as well.

The ink may be used in a fountain pen or with a metal nib pen, it is most traditional to use a feather quill when writing such petitions on parchment.
