Art Postcard - Friedrich Nietzsche
More Postcards
More Famous People
One of the world's most influential thinkers, Friedrich Nietzsche lived from 1844 to 1900. This classic portrait by an unidentified photographer, captures his spirit and intensity very well.
Nietzsche challenged the foundations of the very Christianity of his parents (he was raised Lutheran). He also challenged traditional morality. Known as one of the first existential philosophers, he was concerned with the power of the individual and the world that we live in - rather than the uncertain other world beyond. Quite popular with the avant garde, Nietzsche felt that we should all honestly question those standard parts of life that drain our energies - no matter how popular and prevalent those doctrines and practices might be.

Vampire Paper Dolls
More Paper Dolls
More Hallowe'en
From ancient lore to new blood: here are all the Vampire Paper Dolls you'll ever need!
Behold the deathless appeal of the vampire, from the creatures of the earliest myth and literature to the popular characters in recent movies and television shows. This colorful collection of 31 paper dolls and costumes starts in biblical times with Lilith and Cain, spans through the ages to include Bela Lugosi in the 1931 classic Dracula and more!
The notion of vampires has existed for millennia, going back to ancient civilizations from China to Mesopotamia. The Hebrews, the Greeks and the Romans all had stories of demonic spirits that could be considered precursors to our modern-day vampire, and the ancient Indian goddess, Kali, who displayed fangs and a necklace of skulls, was linked with the drinking of blood. Many vampire tales that originated in England during te medieval period were similar to later reports from Germany and Easter Europe. In fact, the blood-sucking entity that we recognize today as the vampire had its originals almost exclusively in 9th-century Southeastern Europe. Then in the early 11th century, the belief in vampires had spread throughout Europe.
Vampires are regarded as the undead, compelled to feed on the life force - usually blood - of the living.
This wonderful collection includes:
Lilith - Cain - The Blood Countess - Vlad III (Dracula Sekhmet - Lamia - Kali - Camazotz The Vampire Cat of Nebesima - Chiang Shi 2 Versions of Queen Akasha (Aaliyah) Baobhan Sith - Lord Ruthven The Vampyre (1819) Sir Francis Varney & Flora Bannerworth - Carmilla/Millarca & Laura The Skeleton Count & the Vampire Mistress - Count Orllok & Ellen (Nosferatu) Dracula (Bela Lugosi) - Dracula's Daughter - Vampira Dracula (Christopher Lee) - Blacula - Barnabas Collins (Dark Shadows) Dracula (Gary Oldman) - Lestat de Lioncourt & Claudia - Angel (Angelus) Buffy - Spike - Edward Cullen & Bella Swan (Twilight) Bill Compton & Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood)
A history of vampires and such is included as well as a detailed description of each of the dolls.

Art Postcard - Isadora Duncan
More Music
In a famous photograph by Arnold Genthe, Isadora Duncan reaches her hands toward the sky in a gesture of the modern dance for which she was so well known. The photo was taken sometime between 1915 and 1918. An elegant woman, she was also known for her modern ideas and lifestyle.
She is often thought to be the creator of modern dance as an art form. She was enamoured with the new and sympathized with communism. Most of her adult life was spent in Paris and in Moscow. Her life was quite scandalous, having borne two children out of wedlock, who later drowned in an odd automobile accident with their nanny.
She, too, died in a freak automobile accident, when one of her beloved long and flowing silk scarves was caught in the wheel of an open car as she was riding. It strangled her at age 50. She lived that short life fully and is remembered in so many artistic ways.

Vintage Square John Lennon Pinback Button
More Pinback Buttons
Created as a memorial to John Lennon in 1980, this pin is old store stock - never used. They were originally distributed by Ludlow Sales company of New York City immediately after John Lennon's death. These were quite popular at the time as it was such an untimely and emotional loss - almost like the end of an era. They were distributed only through early 1981 and the rest were stored.
This batch of pins is from an original case that had never been opened. They are in great condition, although a few show a tiny bit of rust on the back. The fronts are in superb condition. Each button measures just about 2-inches square. Above John's picture, it reads:
JOHN LENNON 1940-1980
John Lennon fans and Beatles fans will love this pin. But, we think many who weren't fans will appreciate the significance of the times that this pin represents.

Art Postcard - Buster Keaton, 1925, Hollywood.
We were shocked to discover how many people don't like black and white movies, or silent films. And, we really can't believe that so many folks have no knowledge of one of our favorites, Buster Keaton! He was one of my Dad's absolute favorites - he started his career in film in 1917 in Butcher Boy. His last film was A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum in 1966. In between those two, he directed and acted in a ton of movies. After the silent films of his youth, my Dad's favorite Buster Keaton movie was, of all things, How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965).
This portrait of the comic genius was taken in 1925 by the famed Hollywood still photographer, Arthur Rice.

Art Postcard - The Infamous Rat Pack
The Rat Pack were a group of entertainers in Hollywood, USA, who congregated around the notorious Humphrey Bogart. Most of us know the Rat Pack as the performers in this great black & white postcard. The name was coined by Lauren Bacall, then wife of Bogart, who exclaimed, after seeing her husband and his buddies stumble in the house after a wild night in Las Vegas, "you look like a #@!# pack of rats!"
Comedian Joey Bishop was also part of the pack but is not in this photograph. Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, they were all the rage. Mostly known as an all-boy's club, there were actually quite a few women who were part of the gang as well, including, Angie Dickinson, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley MacLaine, Lauren Bacall (the first) and Judy Garland.
We think this a great card to use as an invitation for a poker night or any other type of party involving your gang of friends.

Art Postcard - Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands, 1991
More Compassion
Edward Scissorhands is from the genius of Tim Burton. He began as a drawing by a young Tim remembering the isolation and frustration he felt as a child. We're big fans of Johnny Depp here at SilverCrow. His capacity to ignore the normal gives him the freedom of expression and life we love. His bittersweet performance transcends the original script as he brings Edward to life.
Yes, the film is a bit odd, but we love it for its sweetness. Tim Burton's character shines through to capture Edward's plight as our own. Photographer Herb Ritts has, as usual, brought the entire story into one frame with this stunning shot.

The Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain: A Book of Quotations
More Books
Renowned as a novelist, journalist and humorist, Mark Twain is not only one of the most most widely read and admired American writers, he is also among the most quoted. Wit and repartee permeate his work - from the short, light pieces to his great novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and even later, in dark meditations on the human condition where his humor takes on a cynical, satirical twist.
This remarkably inexpensive volume gathers together hundreds of Twain's most memorable quips and comments on life, love, history, culture, travel and a diversity of other topics that occupied his thoughts over 50 years of writing and lecturing. Among the quotations included here:
Barring that natural expression of villainy which we all have, the man looked honest enough.
He is now fast rising from affluence to poverty.
Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please.
More than one cigar at a time is excessive smoking.
An invaluable, ready reference for writers, speakers and others in search of amusing and insightful quotes, this entertaining and thought-provoking compilation is also an ideal introduction to Twain's inimitable style and thought.

Die Cut Nietzsche Flexible Greeting Card
Send your favorite epigrams to a friend with our die-cut Nietzsche greeting card! Comes with an envelope and a sticker sheet filled with traditional messages like Happy Birthday and Happy Mother's Day as well as quotes from Nietzsche, such as:
Shared Joys make a friend, not shared sufferings.
One should never know too precisely whom one has married!
If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back at you.
Nietzsche was proud of being an unsystematic philosopher. When he philosophized at all it was with a hammer (hence a hammer illustration is included) - to break down what he called brittle thoughts. Nietzsche is better described as an anti-moralist who passionately rejected Western bourgeois civilization. He regarded Christianity as decadent, and in place of its slave morality he looked to the Übermensch, a heroic and noble individual who would consciously affirm life and whose will to power would set him apart from the herd of humanity.
Nietzsche's signature and some other special illustrations are also included on the sticker sheet.

Born Mary Louise Brooks, she was a daughter of a lawyer and a quite artistic mother. Her early years were fraught with trauma, with parents too busy to discipline or raise her and a neighbor who abused her. Her distinctive hair cut and her flair for the dramatic on and off the screen have made her legend. We love the starkness of her hands and face and are drawn in so easily by those tremendous pearls!

The Dalai Lama Paper Doll
More Buddhist Items
The influential spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama is also Tibet's head of state and most important political leader. Forced to leave his native land when China invaded Tibet in 1945, Tenzin Gyatso, the fourteenth Dalai Lama, moved to India; from there he frequently travels to countries in the West, teaching and lecturing in his pursuit of world peace. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
The tradition of the Dalai Lama (meaning Ocean of Wisdom in Tibetan, reaches back many centuries to the first Dalai Lama, Gedun Drupa, whose founding of a monastery and extensive writing on the teachings of the Buddha in the 15th century began an unbroken succession of Tibetan spiritual leaders.
The 14th Dalai Lama (born Lhamo Thondup) often sites a favorite prayer, from the writings of the Buddhist scholar Shantideva, summing up his greatest sources of inspiration:
For as long as space endures And for as long as living beings remain, Until then may I, too, abide To dispel the misery of the world.
Tom Tierney pays tribute to this renowned teacher in a paper doll collection featuring the revered Buddhist leader and his parents at different stages of their lives. Outfits include formal ankle-length robes of brocaded silk and a fur-trimmed long coat, as well as shirts and prayer shawls of traditional saffron and maroon. Admirers of the spiritual leader - and anyone intrigued by Tibetan culture - will prize this authentically detailed collection.

Place, author of Angels' Tarot and other works, draws correlations between the figures of the Major Arcana and the Christian saints that are not hard to see and appealing in their transparency: St. Nicholas as the Magician, St. Barbara as the Tower, St. Valentine for the Lovers, and so forth. While the application of saints to the predictive or prescriptive uses of Tarot may well shock conservative Christians, Place has an endearing way of weaving the saints' legends into the fabric of esoteric archetype.
A Gnostic Christian Tarot Saints lend themselves remarkably well to correspondences with the archetypal images of the Tarot. St. Francis, a Fool for Christ; St. Nicholas, the Miracle Worker (Magician); and St. Mary Magdalene, The First Papesse (High Priestess). Saints serve as examples of ideal behavior, values, and outlook. By nature, they are well suited to dispense insight and wisdom through the cards. In this beautiful new deck, their personalities bring life to the abstract images of the Tarot.
Robert M. Place has created a powerful tool for accessing the deepest mysteries of the mystical Christian tradition with the Tarot of the Saints. These cards bring to life the spiritual force of these venerated beings in a way that is at once immediately accessible and deeply meaningful. The full-sized book included in this kit was specifically written to accompany the deck. It includes fresh, insightful interpretations, a history of the Tarot, instructions for divination and meditation, and a succinct overview of the Western mystery schools.
This deck and text is created in English. The set is also available in Spanish as Tarot de los Santos.

Die Cut Socrates Flexible Greeting Card
Socrates Quote Rubber Stamp
Socrates has come to be known as one of the wisest philosophers of all time. Interestingly enough, he left few writings - most of what we know of him has come to us through his most famous student, Plato.
He is famous for Socratic Method, the use of a series of purposeful questions posed to students, used to exact not only answers, but the implications of those answers. He is also known for his famous trial and subsequent death by hemlock.
Each card comes with a sticker sheet filled with traditional messages like Happy Birthday and Thank You, but more exciting are the additional sticker quotes attributed to Socrates himself, such as:
Children today are tyrants. They contradict their parents, gobble their food and tyrannize their teachers.
By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
Another of the quotes is also available as a SilverCrow rubber stamp:
Wisdom begins in wonder.

Note card by Jean-Michel Basquiat - Mask
More NoteCards
More Masks & Other Costume
Born in Brooklyn of a mother who was Puerto Rican and a father of Haitian descent, young graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat's legend has lived longer than he did. His works, often labeled neo-Expressionist, emerged from his graffiti and the beginnings of what is now known as hip-hop. A child of the sixties (born, in fact, in 1960), he was internationally recognized in his early 20s, and was gone by 27.
His work is mostly untitled, as is this image, but it is generally known as Mask. Interestingly enough, the main character appears to already be wearing a mask! We like the cat-like image and thought you might as well!

Mother Teresa Medal
More Medals & Milagros
Honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, Mother Teresa has become an icon of selflessness in the modern world. She was born in 1910 as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Macedonia. At 18 she joined the Sisters of Loreto and began her work in India. She was so distressed at the poverty and helplessness of the poor, that eventually she began her work among them, starting at first an open air school, and later, her own order, "The Missionaries of Charity." Members of her community are now continuing her work in over 40 countries.

Nietzsche Watch - the Eternal Return of the Same
Nietzsche perplexed us all with his concept of the "eternal return of the same." Now we perplex you by rendering it as a wristwatch. These words rotate around the watch with each passing second. And certainly, who does not believe this who works in an office all week?
This attractive watch celebrates one of the most influential of 19th century philosophers. Battery powered. One year warranty.
Art Postcard - John Cleese, Bat
In 1990, famed photographer Annie Leibovitz captured the essence of comedian John Cleese. Hanging, as if asleep, he is showing his daytime persona - as a bat hanging from his bed-tree in London.
A great image for a Hallowe'en gathering or for fans of Monty Python, this photographic art postcard will amuse even the most somber of souls.
