Art Post Card - Willie Nelson, New York City, 2001
This elegant and evocative image of Willie Nelson echoes so many of his more earthy songs. Born during the Great Depression, his sensibilities are with the common man and that is why he is so very popular.
Even if you are not a Willie Nelson fan, you might find this photograph really inspiring. Is he trapped in the corner, or comfortable there? Is he looking outward or inward?
The original photograph is by Mark Seliger.

Vintage Postcard - Christ is Born in Bethlehem
More Christmas
More Ephemera
This lovely 1980 Christmas postcard features a green wreath on the top and a red poinsettia with a candle on the bottom. It reads:
There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid, but the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. This very day in David's town your Savior was born - Christ the Lord! And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God: "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!"

Art Postcard - Laser Pop Card in Aqua
More Lenticulars & Other 3D
More Water & Such
We are completely taken by this card. It is at once simple and complex. It is not really a 3d lenticular card, but it appears as such. Technically, the producer calls it a laser-pop card - but we're not really sure what that means!
Just like a lenticular card, there appears to be depth. And just like a lenticular, there is a difference in the image when it is moved in the light, the image changes. But, the best part about it is that there is really no image! It is a beautiful aqua card that shimmers in the light. It looks like the water of the Caribbean Sea.
You'll have to see it in person to know how cool it is as it is quite difficult to illustrate such transformation online.

Art Postcard - La Omnipresence de Dios (The Omnipresence of God)
More Shrines & Shrine Supplies
This amazing image is so full of symbolism that we can't begin to interpret it! At the top is a stunning image of God (as the father) - an older man with a beard. He holds a cross in his right hand and lightening shoots from his left.
There are devils and angels and the hand of God writing. The card declares (in Spanish) that God sees all, hears all and knows all. And that the good outweighs the bad.
There are angels and devils and skulls and evil and good and heaven and hell, prayer and sin - all on in this image. Just imagine the shrine that you might create around this!

Art Postcard - Dancing Pigs
More Pigs
More Good Luck
Such a happy lot of pigs we might not find every day. In fact, this quintet of porkers is celebrating their good luck at being rediscovered. From a vintage post card celebrating St. Patrick's Day and the Luck o' the Irish, we find this reproduction postcard ever so charming.
There is no sentiment on the card, front or back, so why not just use it for cheering someone up or wishing another luck!?

Der Flug - A Similar Card
This wonderfully moving painting by German artist Quint Buchholz shows a flock of gulls with a friend amongst them. Trenchcoat flowing and arms outstretched, our other flyer must be human.
If only it were truly possible to fly, as in our dreams, be they by day or night. The soaring pleasure abounds in this lovely image. From a larger work called, Wer das Mondlight Fängt (Who Catches the Moon Light), we're charmed by this lovely image, only wishing we could join them!

Art Postcard - Die Herde (The Herd)
More Sheep & Other Animals
From evocative artist, Hannes Binder, this thoughtful postcard features a dog and his herd, even if it is the herd of his dreams, or a remembered group. We love the sweetness of this card and the role of protector that the dog takes on each day. We think this a wonderful card for the parent (especially a single parent) who now has an empty nest. Of course, those who have gone will always be with him or her.

Art Postcard - Giacomond (Out on a String)
This controversial painting by German artist Quint Buchholz features a young person walking a tightrope from the roof of a house. He is holding the other end of the rope. It might be either dusk or dawn.
There are just so many possibilities of meaning to this wonderful illustration, that we had to offer it to you! Does he create his own path? Does it simply present itself to him as necessary? Is he leaving home? or, just another building?
We think it perfect for a graduation sentiment that you might add. Or, use our Postcard Frame and settle it on your desk for inspiration.

Vintage Postcard - Mary's Song of Praise
This sweet and beautiful card dates from 1981 and was developed for the Church pastor to send to the congregants to celebrate their faith. The scripture selection is from the Good News Bible. Decorated with holly and ribbons, the postcard reads:
Mary said, "My heart praises the Lord; my soul is glad because of God my Savior, for he has remembered me, his lowly servant! From now on all people will call me happy, because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me. His name is holy; from one generation to another he shows mercy to those who honor him. He has stretched out his mighty arm and scattered the proud with all their plans. He has brought down mighty kings from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away with empty hands. He has kept the promise he made to our ancestors, and has come to the help of his servant Israel. He has remembered to show mercy to Abraham and to all his descendants forever!"

Barbara Kruger: Untitled (I am your slice of life), 1981
Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist whose roots are in media and design. Her edgy collages are derived from found photographs (mostly culled from the sources she most derides in her work). Subsequent layers display her epigrams, pithy and arrogantly assertive.
Her tongue-in-cheek style is at once humorous and contemplative, sarcastic and true. This is certainly evident on this finely made art postcard print.
So many meanings can be gathered from this picture with or without the graphic caption. Perhaps you'll find just the right reason to send this!

Art Postcard - Cat from 25 Cats Named Sam by Andy Warhol

The greatest pop artist of them all, Andy Warhol, was at first an illustrator. This wonderful print from his hand-colored offset print, Cat from "25 Cats Named Sam....," is among our favorites. The original was a mere 9-1/8 inches by 6 inches, so this isn't much smaller.
Imagine a green cat, or is s/he green with envy, or is s/he just simply, Sam? The print was originally produced around 1954.

3D Lenticular Stickers on a Postcard - The Frog Prince/ss
More Stickers
More Water & Water Creatures
What fun this card will be? Is s/he a frog or a prince/ss? - Enough with the clever punctuation. We can't decide if this is a boy or girl frog. So is this a princess or prince? Any way you care to interpret it - it is. The little frog sits on the floor and then decides s/he might be more comfortable on the chair. And, upon jumping up - transforms - in lenticular reality into royalty, be she a princess or he a prince!
The postcard is a standard European size (5-3/4 by 4-1/8 inch). The 2 larger stickers measure 2-1/2 inches high by 1-7/8 inch wide. The 4 mid-sized stickers measure 1-3/4 by 7/8 inch. The smallest 4 measure 7/8 inch square.
The transformation and movement in these stickers is remarkable. Fascinating as they are on-line, you'll be truly amazed when you see them in person.

Art Postcard - Friedrich Nietzsche
One of the world's most influential thinkers, Friedrich Nietzsche lived from 1844 to 1900. This classic portrait by an unidentified photographer, captures his spirit and intensity very well.
Nietzsche challenged the foundations of the very Christianity of his parents (he was raised Lutheran). He also challenged traditional morality. Known as one of the first existential philosophers, he was concerned with the power of the individual and the world that we live in - rather than the uncertain other world beyond. Quite popular with the avant garde, Nietzsche felt that we should all honestly question those standard parts of life that drain our energies - no matter how popular and prevalent those doctrines and practices might be.

So, what must the crow have said to change the situation? We can hardly guess!?

American artist, Susan Dorf creates images that speak to the soul and further. At first, The Art of Losing Your Head II evokes images of a Kachina, the southwest and the earth. From a vintage postcard of an old-time restaurant, this charming image was made into a brand new postcard. We can only guess that this was along Route 66 when a road trip along the historic road was the quintessential American vacation. This fun postcard is reminiscent of simpler times when we celebrated American diversity and enjoyed calling ourselves the cultural melting pot.

Art Postcard - Skeletal System
Every one is numbered and ready for you to memorize - just in case you become disassembled some day. What a fun card for Hallowe'en or the Days of the Dead!
The image has been taken from a vintage anatomical book.

Art Postcard - Karpfen Und Forelle Blau (Carp & Sozzled)
More Crows
More Fish, etc.
So, the carp, crow, frog and friend got together and got drunk and then someone was sent home. Remind you of anyone or any fish? Perhaps this is what it means to drink like a fish. We don't know, but we love the card anyway.
This image was created by German cartoonist, author, singer and painter Ernst Kahl, known for his spot-on representations of anthropomorphic pets and their people.
3D Lenticular Stickers on a Postcard - Human Anatomy
Educational, kitschy, fun and strange all at once - that's what these stickers really are. The lenticular image is repeated t10 times in different sizes. The basic image is a nude man (covered in part by a fig leaf). As the image moves, you'll see different anatomical structures: circulatory, muscular and skeletal. The smallest stickers show only half of the body.

Art Postcard - Alfredo Codona of the Flying Codonas, around 1930
More Circus
Alfredo Codona, of the Flying Codonas, was an extreme trapeze artist. In fact, many thought him to be the most graceful and bravest of all trapeze artists.
He was also well known for being Johnny Weissmuller's double in the 1934 film, Tarzan and his Mate. Click Here for a little taste of his work in that film.
This photo is unattributed and in the collection of the Circus World Museum.

Art Postcard - Observing Our Own Emotions
Another Postcard by William Lateef Yoder
This odd artwork by artist William Lateef Yoder, is loaded with symbols - just like his other illustrations. features so many symbols, we're not sure if they are to be taken at face value and literally translated or to jump into the interpretation head first. The illustration appears to us to be an interpretation of dreams, rather than emotions. But, then again, we did not make the illustration, did we?
The central figure is a young girl with a hula hoop and a dolphin flying through the air. Joining her is a blindfolded angel who reminds us of the woman who usually holds the scales of justice. In the background, a striped clown juggles wine, a dagger, a potato and more. A duck sneaks around her back as a flower shoots high into the sky.
The only information we found on the artist himself was his residence in CORE in 1986/1987, a residential school at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
But, we do love this card!

Art Postcard - Novemberdepression Unter Bankern
More Greed
We're not quite sure about the title, which translates literally as November Depression Among Banks. But we were quite taken by the picture. We like to call it, Suicide by Gold. We can only guess where his greed takes this poor gentleman. Or, is he just broke?
This image was created by Austrian artist Gerhard Haderer.

Art Postcard - Saint
More Tattoo
More Our Lady of Guadalupe
Artist Fred Corbin has created this striking image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in a tattoo flash style. Although irreverent, it is still obvious that the artist holds a deep respect for Our Lady and the angels and other images included. He brings many other symbols, both religious and secular, to the image as well, including an evil eye, flames, a lotus blossom, and more.

Art Postcard - Moral Stories
From a traditional Indian Educational chart, this cool postcard features 4 short moral stories, similar to fables, that help illustrate a good way to live. Such posters are used throughout India to inform, advise and instruct on how to be an ideal citizen in an ideal world. Wouldn't it be lovely if these were to be issued, observed and followed worldwide?
The stories read:
Slow, & Steady wins the race. (The Tortoise & the Hare)
Grapes are Sour" Do'nt Try to do anything which is beyond your reach. (The Fox & Grapes)
As you sow, so shall you reap.
Do'nt give way to flattery.
The spelling and punctuation errors are part of the poster.

Art Postcard - Poker Dogs
More Gambling, More Smoking, and More Drinking
Book of Dogs & Poker Postcards
This gang sure looks like it's been a tough, but fun, night - gambling, drinking and smoking and who knows what they have planned for later.
We were quite taken by this funny postcard - as we are by all dogs playing poker - because of a painting from long, long ago. Our veterinarian was way out in the country - it seemed so many miles away when I was a little girl - but it was only about 5 miles. Dr. McClement was the kindest gentlest man and I was in awe of his knowledge about cats, dogs, birds, horses and even our ducks, turtles and white mice!
Doc's walls were filled with these portraits and I think I really believed that he secretly held card parties for his patients!

Art Postcard - People of the World
More Peacefulness
Culled from archive illustrations from the 19th century, these detailed drawings feature 17 different people from around the world. They are not identified by name, country or culture, but the collage of people is elegant in its simple design.
The individual images are nicely printed and might be used as inspiration for a larger piece of artwork or for a school project.

Art Postcard - Catcher - Tattoo Flash by D.E. Hardy
More Gambling
Ed Hardy (aka, D.E. Hardy) is famous for his modern tattoo flash (tattoo designs) based on the traditional designs of Sailor Jerry and the like. This great flash is called Catcher and is loaded with imagery and symbols. With a smoking skull, 4 aces, spiders, webs, the almighty dollar, a pierced and broken heart a rat and more, this postcard can certainly be used for many different messages that you might choose to send.

Art Postcard - Santa over the Andes
More Hispanic & Latino Items
Both modern and ancient at once, this fun Christmas illustration was created by artist Meletios Peppas. Santa appears to be delivering quite a load of stuff of ancient Mayan or Aztec style and his pulled by dancers dressed as reindeer. There is so much symbolism throughout this card, that you might be able to read just about anything into it. Or, maybe it's just a nice unique Christmas postcard.

Art Postcard - I am grateful...
More Thank You
Under a provocative illustration of a older man inflating balloon, or perhaps, the moon, it reads
I am grateful to all those people who said no. It is because of them I did it myself.
This wonderful black and white postcard might be just perfect for graduation as well. What good advice in a retrospective thought.
The line drawn illustration is by Joe D'Esposito. The card is by Franklin Greenwald.

More Crows & Birds
More Weddings & Anniversaries
What an unlike pair of lovebirds, these! The gentleman crow and snow white dove just couldn't be any happier at this very special wedding. And their friends are certainly singing their praises. All decked out in their best finery with their patent leather shoes, we're sure this duo will live happily ever after!
This image was created by German artist Rudi Hurzlmeier, famed for his pictures of birds in boots and shoes.

Art Postcard - Kuckuck (Cuckoo)
More Birds
More Babies
Famed artist Michael Sowa is always exploring the possibilities of anthropomorphizing animals. His delightful illustrations are always a delight and sometimes thought provoking. We can't really figure out what is going on here, but it appears to be a mother pushing a baby carriage while the gentleman (going the opposite direction) looks on.

Art Postcard - From Heaven
More Heavens
This strange and wonderful image reads,
FROM HEAVEN
We're not sure of the artist, or the image, or the origin. We know it was copyrighted in 1994 to Krishni Kiffa in New York. Although dark, the image is uplifting - just as one might expect of an image from heaven.

Art Postcard - Denker (Thinker)
Artist Heinz Obein has created quite an interesting version of Rodin's famous sculpture, The Thinker. Our fellow is sitting on the edge of a precipice, contemplating the universe, or at least his most current problem. He appears to be a professional businessman, or at least his attire defines him that way. Behind him a bit is his computer. What can this mean? Is the information age behind him? Is thought and information separate? Or, is he just taking a break? You decide.
Art Postcard - El Corazon
The image is based on the Mexican Loteria image, The Heart. The almost real heart is pierced by an arrow with a drop of blood falling from the arrowhead. This traditional image is often associated with the Sacred Heart as well as with Cupid's Heart. So, we can imagine many reasons for you to send this postcard.

Art Postcard - Full of Grace
More Valentines
Artist Louis Cannizzaro created this most beautiful sentiment and set it in a very special drawing. It reads:
FULL OF GRACE
...when god made you beautiful he didn't know when to stop...
Now what woman, or man, or child would not want to hear such a thing? We think this a lovely non-traditional valentine.

Art Postcard - Stichwort Liebe (Keyword Love)
Artist Quint Buchholz creates evocative drawings and paintings that bring about conversations you thought you might never have. We're not quite sure what the title in English could possibly mean. But we love the image of the gentleman on the bench celebrating the snow inside his world - the snow globe while outside it is either dusk or a dreary, rainy day. We think the message suggests that we make our own happiness by enjoying what we have - not craving what we have not. What do you think?
Art Postcard - Rauchschwalben
Immediately this cool postcard reminded us of Leonard Cohen's Bird on a Wire. Haven't we all tried to be free like these guys! The literal translation for Rauchschwalben is barn swallows or smoking swallows. We prefer the second translation. But, it doesn't matter at all. The fellow in the middle surely doesn't care what the others are thinking - so, we're guessing him to be free!

Art Postcard - Three Geishas, Japan circa 1930
The sweet images on this fabulous art postcard are from 1930s Japan. The geishas are posing in the well-known Speak No Evil, See No Evil, Hear No Evil pose. The image is a reproduction of a black and white photograph that must have been hand-tinted. The pastel highlights make the card even more endearing.
Whether you send this card as a hint, frame it for its simplicity or use it in your Asian artwork, we know you'll be delighted with it!

Vintage Postcard - The Birth of Jesus Christ
More Jesus
This sweet and beautiful card dates from 1976 and was developed for the Church pastor to send to the congregants at Christmastide. The scripture selection is from the Good News Bible. Decorated with holly and ribbons, the postcard reads:
This was how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they were married, she found out that she was going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit. Joseph was a man who always did what was right, but he did not want to disgrace Mary publicly; so he made plans to break the engagement privately. While he was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to make Mary to be your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she was conceived. She will have a son, and you will name him Jesus - because he will save his people from their sins."
Now all of this happened in order to make come true what the Lord had said through the prophet, "A virgin will be come pregnant and have a son, and he will be called Immanuel" (which means, "God is with us").
So when Joseph woke up, he married Mary, as the angel of the Lord had told him to. But he had no sexual relations with her before she gave birth to her son. And Joseph named him Jesus.

We suspect these aren't crow or ravens, but, we'd like to pretend anyway. Simply called The Birds, this classic image by Georges Braque was originally created in 1953. Still modern even 50 years later, you'll surely find this a striking image.

Art Postcard - Wiehern
Literally the title of this enchanting postcard is Whinny, but the photographers chose to translate it as Snicker. How much better that translation is!
Two artists, Ernst Volland and Heinz Krimmer, formed Voller Ernst with the aim of building the largest collection of quirky and funny photos. And, this is certainly one of those fantastic images as a postcard.
Zebras have the perplexing nature of appearing as a horse and being manifestly not a horse all at once. Their distinctive stripes are their camouflage against predators. Because of their stripes, the animals that hunt them have a difficult time distinguishing one zebra from the next.
But with in the herd, the stripes prove just the opposite - the stripe patterns are unique to each zebra - allowing their the other herd members to easily identify each other.
Because of these characteristics, zebras represent the ability to maintain individuality in groups and the ability of groups to support individuals. The duality of the stripes represents the integration of the opposites. Opposites are taught to children, and remembered by adults, to achieve deeper meaning of each side. Good is better understood when considered with evil.

This old-fashioned image and old-fashioned message are appropriate for each other. The message reads:

Art Postcard - Lightning Strikes the Empire State Building, 1945

Art Postcard - Celebration, 1945
More Peace
This is not the famous photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt on V-J Day (August 14, 1945) in New York City. But, it might well have been. Much of the pose is the same, only the background is different. It may have been taken by Eisenstaedt himself as one of a series, or it might have been a photo by a passer-by taking the same shot from a slightly different spot. In any case, we're not sure if the subtle difference is as important as the messages of the day: Victory, The War is Over, Peace.
There are so many reasons to use such a postcard - a save-the-date for a military wedding, a valentine, a message of peace, a memory of the year, the day, the generation.

Art Postcard - Feierabend (Closing Time)
Whether it be closing time, or just lights on, we get the idea that this vampire (or what else might he be?) is not ready for the day - or is it night! Reading a book, s/he is not ready for sleep. But, maybe this is not a vampire at all, considering the closed coffins next to him have crosses engraved atop them. Hmmmmm.....

Art Postcard by Edward Gorey - Macavity: The Mystery Cat
From T.S. Eliot's poem/book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats comes this luscious illustration of Macavity aka The Mystery Cat. Macavity so easily eludes all three detectives in the search by leaping over their heads when they are looking down and under their feet when they are looking skyward.
If only we could do the same in such times!

What a stunning portrait of Frida Kahlo in a striped shawl (rebozo a rayas). Contemplative and sedate, it shows her strength but belies her passion.
This photo was taken by Fritz Henle in 1936 and has been reproduced as a wonderful postcard in slight sepia tone.

As far back as philosopher Plato's writings, humans have expected an intercessor from the gods, and each of us supposedly celebrates a Guardian Angel watching over us.

Art Postcard - Under the Eiffel Tower, 1929.
Fork - Also by Kertész
Self-taught photographer André Kertész created this stunning scene. Well known for his major contribution to photography as art, Kertész created a new aestheticism in photographic composition and angle. Never satisfied with a seemingly symmetrical scene, he takes the viewer off balance for a new look at the world.
The white sides in the illustration are part of the postcard, but not part of the square image of the original photograph.

Art Postcard - East Side Lion's Club, 1958.
Here we have a great photograph - only one player's eyes are closed - of the East Side (we're guessing of New York) Lion's Club Women's Basketball club or team. Dressed in in the style of the 1950s, the girls are ready to dribble.
What a different world it was then! And, how wonderfully that is illustrated in this team portrait by photographer Bill Wood. The original photo is from the collection of Diane Keaton, promised to the International Center of Photography.

Art Postcard - Buster Keaton, 1925, Hollywood.
We were shocked to discover how many people don't like black and white movies, or silent films. And, we really can't believe that so many folks have no knowledge of one of our favorites, Buster Keaton! He was one of my Dad's absolute favorites - he started his career in film in 1917 in Butcher Boy. His last film was A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum in 1966. In between those two, he directed and acted in a ton of movies. After the silent films of his youth, my Dad's favorite Buster Keaton movie was, of all things, How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965).
This portrait of the comic genius was taken in 1925 by the famed Hollywood still photographer, Arthur Rice.
Art Postcard - Picasso Self-Portrait
More Picasso
Perhaps the most recognized artist of the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso painted many self-portraits. This reproduction postcard features an image that Picasso created with charcoal on paper around 1899-1900. At only 19, this drawing is not often seen, so this is a special pleasure.

Art Postcard - Le Royaume de France en forme de Bateau
From the Départment des Cartes et Plans we have this wonderful postcard of a vintage illustration of France - in the shape of a boat. Or, should we say that the boat is in the shape of France? Either way, it is a superb illustration for any project involving the French and France. The image appears to be English (de Angleterre) as most of the captions are in English.

Vintage Style Art Postcard: The New Century - Resolutions
More New Year
Although originally created for the beginning of the 20th Century, and reissued for the 21st Century, we just discovered this fun, lightly embossed postcard. Featuring a young lady of the ages as the hands of a clock, each of the hours represents something to give up - as a New Year's Resolution, we're supposing.
In the lower left corner, it reads:
"THE PACE THAT KILLS"
This card was meant to be cut apart and made into a spinner, but we think you'd really need two of the cards to make it work correctly - so you could cut the young lady from the middle of one. In any case, it's still quite entertaining.
Along the left side of the card, it reads:
The New Century: Time to Give Up: I Wine II Liquor III Rich Food IV Cigars V Poker VI Dice VII Cards VIII The Track IX Cigarettes X Pool XI Pawnshops XII Seedy Hotels
Each of the numbers on the clock illustrates its corresponding vice!

We just love wooden postcards! This cheerful drawing of a girl and a boy together looking up towards the birds flying across the sun,
REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES
Our favorite thing to do with these is to use crayons, pastels or colored pencils (markers might run) to color the scene - you might even coat it with sealer to prevent smearing. Then send it to an old friend with some nostalgic remembrances on the back.
What a great invitation for an oldies party!

Art Postcard - Blue Peace
Sometimes the simplest of drawings become the most complex thoughts requiring reflection. We love this postcard from artist Louis N Cannizzaro created in 2000.
The stark blue background is shocked by the almost cream - almost white shift with an outline for definition. The card reads:
Sometimes her friends Show up and they always want something.
Perhaps that's why the lines were drawn.
Art Postcard - Sangre de Cristo, Salvados
Created from a traditional holy card, this colorful postcard highlights so many different images, it is almost impossible to interpret them all. There are angels and cherubs, lost souls in the flames of purgatory as well as the Anima Sola. There also appear to be tiny souls in Limbo, but we cannot be sure of that.
The card reads:
Sangre de Cristo, Salvados
(Blood of Christ, Save Us)
In the palest of letters in the arch above Christ's head, it reads:
redempti estis pretioso sanguine agni immaculati christi
(the blood of the immaculate christ is recognized as the price of redemption)
We're quite sure that this will make a great background for a shrine or other religious art work.
Art Postcard - His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Hands
This stunning photograph by Herb Ritts captures the essence of peace and good will that is the Dalai Lama. Although forced to live outside his native Tibet, he does not speak ill of his detractors. His ability to connect both the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and the modern world are a tribute to his sincerity.
Here, in 1987, he was captured with the traditional mala beads meant for praying (similar to the Catholic rosary). This photo is from Pictures of Peace, an exhibition and book committed to promoting international good will and principles of free expression. Proceeds from our purchase of this card to sell to you have already helped the Human Rights Watch, known for defending human rights
Art Postcard - The Infamous Rat Pack
The Rat Pack were a group of entertainers in Hollywood, USA, who congregated around the notorious Humphrey Bogart. Most of us know the Rat Pack as the performers in this great black & white postcard. The name was coined by Lauren Bacall, then wife of Bogart, who exclaimed, after seeing her husband and his buddies stumble in the house after a wild night in Las Vegas, "you look like a #@!# pack of rats!"
Comedian Joey Bishop was also part of the pack but is not in this photograph. Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, they were all the rage. Mostly known as an all-boy's club, there were actually quite a few women who were part of the gang as well, including, Angie Dickinson, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley MacLaine, Lauren Bacall (the first) and Judy Garland.
We think this a great card to use as an invitation for a poker night or any other type of party involving your gang of friends.

Art Postcard - Gossip (Metamorphic Card)
Quite popular in the early 1900s, metamorphic illustrations featured images that were interconnected ideologically as well as in their art. This interesting card shows several women in intense conversation, presumably in the midst of a real gossip session. Their faces, hats, arms and more interconnect, so that at first glance we see a demon o sorts (his head composed of the lights in the lady's room or the theatre where the women are talking.
The original illustration was a pencil drawing and has been reproduced quite nicely.
Art Postcard - Leo Tolstoy
We actually received a stack of these postcards by mistake from one of our favorite suppliers! But we loved it and decided to buy them to present to you!
Looking like a destitute wanderer, the great literary figure was not at all penniless at his death, in fact, he was able to afford to live as he chose:
"...If I were told that what I shall write will be read in twenty years by the children of today and that they will weep and smile over it and will fall in love with life, I would devote all my life and all my strengths to it..."

Further Journeys
We love Michael Sowa's artwork. With a bit of whimsy mixed with philosophy and thoughtfulness, he often provides us with sleepless nights - just wondering what the story behind them image might be!
From the imaginative mind of artist Michael Sowa, this implausible quartet of German Shepherds appears to be lost at see in a slight rowboat without any paddles. Just what are they doing?
Wouldn't this make a great card for a short Bon Voyage note? Or, a note for a sailor, dog lover, water baby or anyone?
Sowa's art evokes wonder and amazement; a mix of surrealism and comic illustration, of humor and seriousness.

Art Postcard - The Basic Twist - Forward and Back
Just in case you know some folks who have never twisted, you might just want to introduce them to some old Chubby Checker tunes and send along this card. In fact, why not have a twisting party and use these cards to invite your friends?
Along with a great drawing and some illustrations of foot movements, there are detailed instructions:
The Basic Twist - Forward and Back Start with the left foot in front of the right foot. When first dancing the twist, keep the weight evenly distrib- uted over both feet. As you start twisting the hips, do not step with the feet. Leave them apart as described. Twist your hips to the right, making a semicircular movement. Twist your hips to the left, making a semicircular movement. Repeat step 1. Repeat step 2. As you do the basic twist movement, you will automatically feel a slight flexing of first one knee, then the other knee as you make the semicircular movement.

Art Postcard - Hot Dog
There are lots of intelligent dogs in the imaginative mind of artist Gerhard Glück and this delightful postcard features one of them. And, he's a brave little puppy, indeed. Surprised by the Hot Dog vendor offering up frankfurters for 70¢ apiece in the big city, he decides to take a snapshot to record the moment for posterity. But, just what does that street chef have in mind for him!?
Art Postcard - Drive-In Theatre - The First One!
What a different world it was in 1935, when photographer John Gutmann created this portrait of the first Drive-In Theatre. How popular theatres like these were in the 1950s and 1960s. What fun it was to fill up a car and go to the show.
The black and white photograph says it all! The sign reads:
DRIVE-IN THEATRE SIT IN YOUR CAR SEE AND HEAR TALKING PICTURES ON THE WORLD'S LARGEST SCREEN California's First
How new that must have seemed? Today we are so used to the new that we sometimes forget to recognize the different. This card reminds us to look for the new - even in the old!
Art Postcard - La Roulette D'Amour (The Wheel of Love)
More French
Isn't love a game after all? We're not sure, but this reproduction of a French postcard suggests that it might be.
Featuring a gaming wheel of roulette, it reads at the top:

On the wheel:

Art Postcard by Dalí - Muchacha de Espalda
Alternatively titled Girl from the Back and Girl Seated, this lovely reproduction art postcard is suitable for framing. Hailing from Dalí's early period (1925), many are surprised at this surrealist's realism!
This fine portrait is of Dalí's sister Ana Maria as are others of his portraits from his early years. Ana Maria is seated and relaxed. Although her face does not appear to us immediately, her glance is the main idea of the painting. Notice the lines of his sister's gown and those of the buildings - already we see his unique eye that easily joins the static, still life of the world with the living breath of reality of human life.

Art Postcard - Exercise 47
This odd artwork by artist William Lateef Yoder, 1987 features so many symbols, we're not sure if they are to be taken at face value and literally translated or to jump into the interpretation head first. Is the exercise the artist's - in trying so many images.
Or, indeed, is it the exercise of the central character in his circular movement. Or, is it an exercise of the senses - the hand and eye, the pop to the ear, the presentation of the left hand and the scent of the lotus. Which shall we see or hear or smell.

Art Postcard - Dead, 1983 by Gilbert & George
Gilbert and George are two modern artists who met in the 1960s and have worked together pretty much ever since. Their artwork is at once surreal and real and representative of London's East End art scene. Or, perhaps, they defined the scene. They are really Gilbert Proesch and George Passmore and work together as a duo, although it cannot be confirmed that they are partners.
They are quite prolific and much of their art has to do with death and doom and extremes. This piece is entitled DEAD and features the artists in the lower right. We're not quite sure what is dead or if it is a dream. Such is the surreal, is it not? or, is it?

Art Postcard - My Greatest Friend
Now, even if you've never loved an elephant, this lovely photograph by artist John Drysdale, taken in 1986, certainly makes you want to meet one. Anyone with a loving pet or loving friend will enjoy this card as a communiqué, a framed photograph or, simply as a keepsake.
Memories of youth, friendship and the simplicity of life and our connection with the web of the world - all of these emotions are presented at once on this lovely card.

Art Postcard - Motivation
This odd artwork by artist William Lateef Yoder, attempts to illustrate the brain and it's motor centers - but is that motivation? We love Yoder's artwork because, with every question answered, another slips up to the surface:
Why are there hospital head wraps? Has there been an operation? an extraction? Is true motivation only from within? You decide.
Art Postcard - Boy at Circus, New York, 1943
This little fellow is having the time of his life, that's for sure! With his binoculars almost glued to his eyes, he's watching a circus act - we're not even sure which one. The glee in this face is the highlight of this fine example of black and white photographic portraiture that has come to be known by artist Weegee (Arthur Fellig).
Fellig's nickname, Weegee, is a phonetic version of Ouija. As a news photographer, he was so often the first to arrive at the scene after a crime, a fire or other event. But, we was also known for documenting typical events of his time in New York, such as this wonderful circus scene.

Art Postcard - Eulabes Religiosus Mittelbeo (South Indian Talking Mynah)
More Crows & Other Birds
In researching this delightful photograph, we discovered that the mynah bird is not really one bird after all! S/he is of the starling family and is extremely gregarious and known for being imitative. They are especially well known for being talkers!
We here at SilverCrow, of course, love any blackbird, but we discovered that this black mynah is really not exactly typical of mynahs. Most are dark-feathered, but few are really black. In fact even a few are white!
This art postcard featuring a speaking black mynah is just the ticket for an announcement of any sort. Or, send it just because it will bring a smile to all those who see it on the way to its intended!

S/he's lucky for more than one reason, that's for sure - not only are so many horseshoes so much good luck, but they're inside - we imagine those horseshoes just might clunk someone on the head!

Art Postcard - Goodnight, 1880
This delightful photo montage was created by photographer Joshua Smith. His works were quite important as he supposedly won an award at the Paris Exposition 1878. This postcard features a reproduction of his Good Morning/Good Night Baby series. After having taken a large number of photographs of babies in the morning and at night, he created a collage of the children in different stages. This one is Good Night - featuring putting the babies to bead or bathing them. Almost everyone of the little ones is crying.
The card reads at the bottom:

Let this fun postcard take you back to the tiki bars of the 1950s through the 1970s! Bob Bingo here can surely hold his liquor - at least on his head! And, he can ring the bells at the same time. But, can he chew gum, too? - Who cares!
What a great postcard for an invitation for a pool party or any other summer or tiki get-together.

Art Postcard - Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands, 1991
More Compassion
Edward Scissorhands is from the genius of Tim Burton. He began as a drawing by a young Tim remembering the isolation and frustration he felt as a child. We're big fans of Johnny Depp here at SilverCrow. His capacity to ignore the normal gives him the freedom of expression and life we love. His bittersweet performance transcends the original script as he brings Edward to life.
Yes, the film is a bit odd, but we love it for its sweetness. Tim Burton's character shines through to capture Edward's plight as our own. Photographer Herb Ritts has, as usual, brought the entire story into one frame with this stunning shot.

So many people associate smoke rings with sorry or loneliness, perhaps even boredom. Whatever this lovely photograph of a smoke ring amidst the wafts of smoke that either created it or are objects of it. Whatever it means, we think this photo from Donald Sultan, entitled Smoke Rings from January 28, 1999, is wonderful. Held either vertically or horizontally, it is equally striking.

Art Postcard - Nudie #8 - Mature Warning
More Taboo
From a 1920s or 1930s vintage nudie photograph, this sepia-toned modern edition holds true to the original. The woman poses holding a bunch of grapes above her head while seated on a velvet drop.
While this postcard is risqué for its time - and it still is a bit naughty even for today - the photograph was tastefully shot with fine composition.

Art Postcard - Santa Lucia (Saint Lucy)
More Holy Cards & Other Trading Cards
Santa Lucia, famed of the Italian folk song, is the Patron Saint of Vision. She is shown here on this lovely postcard holding and image of eyes and a palm or reed. Lucy was persecuted by non-Christians and the story has it that she was blinded by a non-Christian wishing to marry her. She would not give up her religion and courageously gave up her eyes. Her legend ends with God restoring her eyesight.
She is revered by both the Catholic and Orthodox religions and is one of the few saints recognized by the Lutheran Church as well.
This wonderful art postcard is a reproduction of a vintage prayer card featuring St. Lucy.

Art Postcard - Another World

Art Postcard - Cowboy Crate Label
More Wild West & Rodeo
Collectible crate labels are used in all kinds of artwork, but we think this one makes a great postcard, too. Featuring a western cowboy riding his trusted companion horse, this label identified orange crates from the Tustin Hills Citrus Association of Tustin, California (abbreviated as Calif. on the card). He is riding fast and hard to lasso that orange. The original label hails from the 1930s.

Art Postcard - on Sundays
This clever postcard describes just what we should do on the weekends - enjoy our leisure! So, here's that blank slate to offer to your friends and relatives!

Sideshows have virtually disappeared from the Circus and Carnival Circuit although a few can still be seen around the world. Because many of the acts involved people and animals with disabilities and handicaps, customers had dwindled, not wanting to take advantage of the performers. There was much protest by the performers themselves, because often these were the only jobs available to them. This provocative photograph features small and large people, sword swallowers and performs of all kinds.
The photograph was taken by Century Studio and is taken from a photo in the Hertzberg Circus Collection at the San Antonio Public Library

Art Postcard - Sacred Heart Tattoo Flash
Temporary Tattoos
The Sacred Heart has long been an iconic image to Christians and it's significance has not been lost on those who enjoy tattoos. This tattoo flash image represents the Sacred Heart of Christ along with several other amulet-like images. Included are the number 13 under an umbrella, the evil eye protector, a skull and crossbones and a sparrow flying downward. All of these are popular tattoo designs. A tattoo flash is a design that will be used for a tattoo (or, indeed, already has been used for a tattoo). The "flash" has been printed, painted or drawn on paper or cardboard. Pictures like these are hung on the tattooists walls for potential customers to peruse along with other designs.

Art Postcard - Rembrandt: Oiseaux de Paradis (Birds of Paradise)
Once you have seen artwork by Rembrandt, you'll agree that no other artist can compare with such a master. Many of his works can be found in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. When we walked through the museum we were overcome with all the famous paintings by masters from many centuries, but once we reached the Rembrandts, we were in awe and found it hard to believe.
Les Oiseaux de Paradis, created around 1636-1638 appears modern and classic at once. But there is no doubt that it was created by a master. Found today in the Le Louvre in Paris, it is considered Graphic Art, a genre that was not even defined when this pen and ink rendering was created so long ago.

Art Postcard - Elegy to the Spanish Republic # 34
More Spanish & Latin
Robert Motherwell was an American abstract expressionist painter and printmaker. Although his major works are paintings, he is also quite well known for his philosophical writings, having been a philosopher as well as an artist. Connecting the mind to the canvas was his passion.
The Elegy for the Spanish Republic # 34 is one of the many pieces in the series by the same name, considered to be his most significant work. The stark black against the washed colors creates visual impact.
These cards were sent to us in error, but we decided to keep them, as the black paint reminded us of the silhouettes of crows in flight. We have no way of knowing if this was his intention, but we decided to interpret his artwork in this manner as it was our first impression. As crows are known in many cultures to be protectors, we hope the Spanish Republic willing to accept our interpretation.

Art Postcard - Chris Rock, 1998 in Brooklyn (by Annie Leibovitz )
Other Celebrated Characters & People
The consummate comedian, Chris Rock has become well known for stretching the limits of politically incorrectness - and, mostly without offense. Taken in Floyd Bennett Field in his hometown Brooklyn, New York, Rock shows yet another side! Although he was born in South Carolina, he calls New York home.
Art Postcard - Andy Warhol in Paris
Your 15 Minutes are Up Button
Andy Warhol is perhaps best known for his soup cans, his stylized portraits of famous people and his claim that everyone is famous for 15 minutes. This dramatic photograph was taken by Christopher Makos in Paris in 1981.
Following routine gall bladder surgery, Warhol died on February 22, 1987. After his burial in Pittsburgh, a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York was attended by over 2,000 people. This image was used for the memorial card.

Art Postcard - Paul Newman
More than just a superstar, Paul Newman was one of the world's greatest philanthropists. We have had this postcard in stock for some time, but have not offered it online.
He has long been one of our favorite people. And, we never buy any other Salad Dressing or Salsa here. His engaging blue eyes are the standard by which others are gauged.
He has made so very many people happy in so very many ways, why not send one of these through the mail and make everyone smile from the processing center on through to the recipient.
Art Postcard - Gargoyle, Notre Dame, Paris, 1933

Art Postcard - Day of the Dead Jester
This fellow either died laughing or told such an awfully bad joke. We love the imagery here. This skeleton is subtly dressed in a jesters hat and collar and enjoying his moment - whatever it might be. The hint of pastel wash to his hat and collar lend an even more curious air to the image. It is signed, R.W., but we're not sure of the artist. But there is certainly a Posada-like tone to this great postcard.

Art Postcard - Hello
Not quite sure how to say, "hello" after so many years? Well, this sweet postcard of a monkey family meeting the gentleman just might be perfect. Postcards make wonderful correspondence media - particularly for short notes that you must make not-so-personal!
This image is a reproduction of a much earlier postcard and we're just delighted that the printer chose this wonderful image. There are ever so many stories one can imagine from this little print:
Is it a circus milieu (with the ringmaster on the left)? Or is that a sweet uncle who just gave the little girl a hoop? Why don't the woman and girl have blouses? You will find much more in this picture the more you analyze it!

Art Postcard - Les Amants
René Magritte was, as an artist, an accomplished technician. His special juxtapositions of the ordinary within the unusual context quite often surprises the viewer. At first you might love one of his works and momentarily, despise it. Or, vice versa - you'll ignore or dismiss an image that may then become essential in your collection.
The vision of this set of lovers sets so many questions forward: are they real? are they secret lovers? are they hiding something from each other? You can only add more questions to these.

Postcard of Einstein Relaxing on the Beach
From a private collection of photographs, by an unknown photographer, we find Albert Einstein, circa 1945 lounging on a beach. We're just guessing, but it must have been after the War, because he looks so peaceful.
Known as an eccentric throughout his life, he lives up to it here - notice his sandals, and of course, his hair!
If you're quite taken by Albert Einstein, you might also be interested in our Einstein Notebook and our set of 6 Black & White Einstein Postcards.

Edward Weston: Nude (Face Down on Sand), 1936
Edward Weston was a photographer before his time! His elegant photos, mostly in black and white are renowned for their simple complexity. His critics insist that he produced far too many photos and was just lucky to have a few good shots. Those good shots were surely superb. He was the inspiration for many of today's black and white photographers.
This is a classic Weston nude on a beautiful art print postcard, suitable for framing.

Art Postcard - Louise Brooks
Born Mary Louise Brooks, she was a daughter of a lawyer and a quite artistic mother. Her early years were fraught with trauma, with parents too busy to discipline or raise her and a neighbor who abused her. She became well known as an actress of the silent film era, and later became a writer and film critic.
Her distinctive hair cut and her flair for the dramatic on and off the screen have made her legend. This photograph taken in 1928 by Eugene Robert Richee captures all of the dimensions of this complex actress. We love the starkness of her hands and face and are drawn in so easily by those tremendous pearls!

Art Postcard - Their Master's Voice
From the imaginative mind of artist Michael Sowa, this delightful card will surely enchant any dog or music lover! From the famous RCA advertisements, Their Master's Voice features a theatre full of dogs (mostly the same terrier that the RCA advertisement starred) and a few others. Most are listening to the gramophone on stage, but, as usual with dogs (and people, too), some are not! Sowa's art evokes wonder and amazement; a mix of surrealism and comic illustration, of humor and seriousness.

Art Postcard - Modellen (MEN)
Modellen 2 - Women Postcard
From a series of photographs, artist Danny Matthys has created a collage of sorts of models from different modern times. Although each photo appears familiar, we could not positively identify any one. The artist has applied tints to some of the images in a pattern that makes the eye travel inward, then outward - so tat none is missed.
The individual images are tiny enough that each may be used in miniature artwork, or as images that might be used as photos in a doll house!

Emmy Lou was a serious artist on her own. She first met Rivera and Kahlo while she was in her teens and forged both a working and personal relationship with them throughout their lives.
It has been said that a beautiful photographic portrait can only be taken by someone who cares deeply for the subjects. That is evident in this photo.

Attributable in part to Brazil, Spain and Argentina, and dating back to the 19th century, the tango is generally considered to be based on a folk dance of Argentina called milonga. This was a dance fitted to an old Spanish song that claims Moorish and Arabic ancestry as well as Spanish.
Introduced into North America in the early part of this century, the tango achieved immediate popularity which ahs lasted up to the present day.

Art Postcard - Fork, Paris, 1928.
Photographer André Kertész created this stunningly simple photograph - with so much expression in such little space and form. The dinner fork placed in balance upon the dinner plate and shadows compose the entire photograph. Is dinner finished? Has the diner simply paused? The slight shadow on the dish and the continued form of the fork carry a sense of future even with the sense that the fork is positioned as thought the meal has ended.
As mesmerizing as it was when introduced, this striking photo might make the perfect invitation for your next dinner party, or, indeed, the perfect thank you for the one you just attended.

More Musical Items
From one of our favorite designers, Stella Marrs, this fun photograph gets the message across - for whatever reason:

We think it not tongue-in-cheek, but rather a modern message juxtaposed on a vintage photograph - and, while we may each travel to the beat of a different drum, we're all here together! Great for a party invitation or just a note to a friend, this postcard will bring a smile to anyone who encounters it.

Art Postcard - The Lost Chord
Arthur Sullivan (of the famed Gilbert and Sullivan) composed the music for The Lost Chord as he sat at his brother Fred's beside, during his last days. The words were written by Adelaide A. Proctor. Known for its grandeur and eloquence, The Lost Chord is often represented by the young woman playing the the pipe organ with a choir of angels accompanying her.
Seated one day at the organ, I was weary and ill at ease, And my fingers wandered idly Over the noisy keys; I know not what I was playing, Or what I was dreaming then, But I struck one chord of music, Like the sound of a great Amen, Like the sound of a great Amen.
It flooded the crimson twilight, Like the close of an angel’s psalm, And it lay on my fevered spirit, With a touch of infinite calm, It quieted pain and sorrow, Like love overcoming strife, It seemed the harmonious echo From our discordant life, It linked all the perplexed meanings Into one perfect peace, And trembled away into silence, As if it were loath to cease; I have sought but I seek it vainly, That one lost chord divine, Which came from the soul of the organ, And entered into mine.
It may be that death’s bright angel Will speak in that chord again; It may be that only in Heav’n I shall hear that great Amen. It may be that death’s bright angel Will speak in that chord again; It may be that only in Heav’n I shall hear that great Amen

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed it's the only thing that ever has.

Many Moons - Art Postcard by Duane Michals
Duane Michals' moons are clever and curious, definitely evoking a smile.
His black and white drawing of a many-moonlit night is accompanied by his poem:
WHEN I WAS A LITTLE BOY, IT SEEMED TO ME THAT THERE WERE MANY MOONS. MY GRAND MOTHER HAD A MOON, AND MY OTHER GRANDMOTHER HAD ONE TOO. WE HAD A MOON OVER BACKYARD, AND MY BEST FRIEND ART HAD MOONLIGHT IN HIS BEDROOM FROM HIS MOON WHEN WE VISITED OUR RELATIVES IN CHICAGO, I WAS NOT SURPRISED TO DISCOVER THEIR MOON. THEN ONE NIGHT, AS WE RETURNED FROM A VISIT TO MY GRANDMOTHER I WATCHED OUT OF THE CAR'S BACK WINDOW AND SAW HER MOON FOLLOW US HOME. HER MOON WAS OUR MOON THERE WAS JUST ONE MOON ! NOW THE SKY SEEMED SO EMPTY.
Art Postcard - Privacy
From one of our favorite designers, Stella Marrs, this engaging photograph sets an eerie tone, especially with its warning message:
PRIVACY It's your right.
We think it an odd conduit for such a message - when a postcard is so, shall we say, not private. This, perhaps, says even more - it's our right, but can we expect it?

Art Postcard - Save the Date
From one of our favorite stationers, Stella Marrs, and designed by Sean Tejaratchi, this mid-20th century photo is reminiscent of a whole other way of living. But, weddings usually do bring a smile.
Save the date... ...and we'll live happily ever after!
This can be a kitschy and frugal way of asking your wedding guests to save the date. We think this would be just wonderful for an anniversary party, as well - especially for one of the milestones - 25th, 50th or 75th!

3D Art Postcard - Hokusai Katsushika - The Great Wave
More 3D Lenticulars
We love lenticulars - the layered paper and plastics that create a moving 3-dimensional effect. This wonderfully mailable post card features the familiar image of the Great Wave by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai who lived from 1760 to 1849.
He is quite famous for his wonderful wood-cut prints of the Ukiyo-e, pictures of the floating world - everyday life. His works seems to be more popular in the West than it has ever been in his homeland.
His striking image of the sea completed in this new lenticular form is simply spectacular - the movement is amazing. In fact the sea appears to transform into mountains, another of the artists favorite subjects. Although the transformation is hard to notice online, we're sure you'll be as awed by the images in person.

We were particularly taken by the vision of Paris from a not-so-recognizable spot - the feeling of the City of Light is evident.
