Day of the Dead Widow on Coffin
More Day of the Dead
More Smoking
We're not quite sure what she is celebrating, cigarette in hand, but we are sure that she is quite the alluring figure. Dress color, as well as hair color, varies, but not the attitude of our Day of the Dead Skeleton Woman with a Coffin!
Just like the rest of our Day of the Dead Figurines, this Muertos vignette is hand sculpted and painted by traditional artisans in Mexico. Our Widow with Coffin Muerto is just over 3 inches high and about as wide. Please let us choose one for you.

Vintage Metal Stag Head Tobacco Tag
More Vintage Stuff
More Tobacco Tags & Other Metal Tags
More Animals of All Kinds
More Collage & Altered Art Supplies
Tobacco tags were made in all kinds of sizes and shapes. They were made of metal and were used to identify plugs of tobacco, especially tobacco for chewing.
These tags are quite rare as they are die cut into the shape of a stag's head. Many tags from this company are square, round or triangular with a printed image of the stag's head on them.
We are illustrating 2 tags so that you can see the variation in condition. We quite like their chippy look and feel - especially for altered art and jewelry! On either side of the head are points so that the tag could be pressed into the tobacco - on most of the tags, these are already bent backward, but on some they lay flat, ready for bending. Each tag measure 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch and is less than 1/16 inch in profile.
These tags were used around the early 1900s to mark plugs of tobacco - tobacco for chewing. Around that time, it was made by pressing cured tobacco leaves together in a molasses-based or other sweet syrup. This was a hand-on process. Customers would cut, or even bite off, a piece of the plug to chew.

Old-Time Mutton chops Reproduction Paper Mask
More Masks More Smoking
In the 19th century, a gentleman might be recognized by his distinctive sideburns. Throughout history, such facial hair has come in and out of fashion. Mutton Chops such as the ones on this funny mask were so called because they represented the furry rear quarters of a sheep or lamb.
Extravagant sideburns and other facial hair became out of favor in the early 20th century as the gas mask was developed for use in warfare and on the streets of the European cities overcome with war. For a snug fit, it was imperative for the gas mask to fit snuggly, and this was only accomplished if right against the skin!
This fellow has furry eyebrows and a mustache as well. And, he's smoking a cigar! We don't think you'd call him a pretty face by any definition.
The mask arrives flat and is simple to wear with black ribbon on either side for securing your mask. It measures about 10-1/2 inches.

Large Vintage Matchbox Cover: Good Luck
More Good Luck
The printing on vintage European and Asian matchbox covers is amazing! The vibrant colors and excellent graphics are all quite special. Most of the covers are for the smaller boxes - about 2-1/2 inches by 1-1/4 inch. This fine cover is the exception - measuring 4 inches by 2-3/4 inches. The printed side smooth - probably from the ink. The back is rougher to hold the adhesive necessary for attaching the cover to the box.
This one reads:
GOOD LUCK SAFETY MATCHES DISTRIBUTORS M.A.C.M&CO MUTHURAMALINGAM MATCH WORKS, SATTUR.
There is an imperfection that has been altered (by the original printer). The word DISTRIBUTORS was originally spelled DISTRIBUTURS and the second "U" was graphically altered to an "O". This is hardly noticeable unless the label is examined closely. This may increase or decrease the value - you decide!
Matchbox covers have long been collected from around the world. And, these are no exception. We recently bought an entire collection to add to ours and we're selling the duplicates. What a wonderful way to start your own collection.

Art Postcard - Poker Dogs
More Postcards
More Dogs
More Gambling, More Smoking, and More Drinking
Book of Dogs & Poker Postcards
This gang sure looks like it's been a tough, but fun, night - gambling, drinking and smoking and who knows what they have planned for later.
We were quite taken by this funny postcard - as we are by all dogs playing poker - because of a painting from long, long ago. Our veterinarian was way out in the country - it seemed so many miles away when I was a little girl - but it was only about 5 miles. Dr. McClement was the kindest gentlest man and I was in awe of his knowledge about cats, dogs, birds, horses and even our ducks, turtles and white mice!
Doc's walls were filled with these portraits and I think I really believed that he secretly held card parties for his patients!

Vintage Cuban Cigar Label: Perfecto Garcia
A huge cigar must have originally held one of these labels - they are quite large, measuring 5-5/16 inches wide by 3-1/8 inches high. The striking colors appear to be modern, but we are quite sure that our labels are from the early 20th century (from 1900-1939). The labels are all in excellent condition for their age and you'll be charmed by the slight patina that has developed on the metallic gold embossing.
Created for Cuban cigars, this label could have been made in the United States or in Cuba as trade was still vital between the countries at the time of production.

Vintage Label: Fabrica de Tabacos
Printed on what appears to be clay-coated paper, this gorgeous label is truly singular in its intricacies. We're not sure if this was meant to be a label for the inside or outside of a cigar box - or even if it were to be for cigars at all. It reads:
fabrica de Tabacos (Tobacco Factory)
in elegant Spencerian-like script. It is highly embossed and features foiled golden metallic letters and filigree.
A mark on the lower right corner of the design reads:
PM DEP.16601.
The entire label measures 10-1/8 by 6-1/8 inches and shows wear on the corners and edges (where some of the coating has actually worn away as well). The actual image measures 6-1/8 by 4-1/8 and is in fine condition.
There is a tobacco factory museum in Havana, Cuba, with the same name.

Little Plastic Statue of San Simon (Maximon)
More Statues & Other Shrine Supplies
Hand Painted Statue of San Simon
San Simon is also known as Maximon. He is not recognized by the Catholic Church as a saint. Nevertheless, statues of him have become quite popular.
Our little plastic statue measures just 3 inches high and features San Simon with his money, cigarettes and liquor, just like the life-sized statues found in Central and South America.
San Simon's origins appear to be in Guatemala, where he is found on many folk charms, and is named Maximon (pronounced Mash´- eee - mon). This name is derived from a Mayan deity, so his origins are in folk religion as a combination of the Catholic as well as the Indian.
He is always dressed in a black suit with a red necktie and a large-brimmed hat and is usually sitting in a chair with a cigarette and an alcoholic drink. He also balances a bag of money or coins on his lap or in his hands and holds the staff of a flag or pennant.
Sometimes he is associated with the underworld and sexual prowess. But, as a Mayan deity, he is primarily a bringer of rain and fertility. Because of the items that are depicted with him, he is sometimes associated as the patron saint of gamblers and drunkards. And he is thought to bring worldly wealth to those who pray to him.

Vintage Horseshoe-Shaped Tobacco Tag
More Horses
We bought these from someone who declared that her 97-year-old grandfather told her that his mother used to chew tobacco and she saved these horseshoe plug tags.
Tags like these were used to identify the plug manufacturer. Although many such tags bore the name of the tobacco grower or producer, these do not. Most of these are quite rusty. The points bend under to attach them to the tobacco, or of course, to your project! Some of the points are bent backward already, so please be careful - the points are sharp!

Vintage Motif in Shiny Goldtone Metal: Cigarettes
More Jewelry Components
More Assemblage Stuff
We are not really sure what metal was used to create these snazzy Cigarettes flat-backed motifs. We do know that they are pretty cool!
Each one of these measures 1-5/8 inch long by 3/4 inch from the top of the C to the bottom of the g. Each is about 1/8 inch thick. The back of the motif (shown in the bottom illustration) features some grooves to hold the adhesive.
We suspect these were used on cigarette cases from the 1950s or 1960s, when smoking was all the rage for les modernes.
Two motifs shown for illustration only.

Vintage Yankee Girl Box with Red & White Checks
More Boxes and Bags
More Smoking & the Like
We love old boxes - to collect and especially for wrapping presents. This one is great fun for USA patriotic holidays (especially for New Yorkers). Originally designed to hold plug tobacco, the red and white checks made it quite noticeable amongst the other boxes in cigar cases. My grandfather had a bookstore years ago that also sold cigars, tobacco, stationery, toys, and a zillion other things. He always indicated that red drew the eyes to the product better than anything (I guess, of course, unless your buyer was colorblind!) The printing is all in dark blue, but we think it just might look great for Christmas as well.
Plug tobacco is chewing tobacco that was made with molasses. The sweet and sticky molasses helped hold the tobacco together to form a sheet - sort of like a fruit roll! The large sheets were cut into smaller sheets called plugs and wrapped with finer tobacco. The plug connoisseur would then either cut off, or more likely, bite off a piece to chew.
Your box will arrive flat, but, with a little ingenuity, you should be able to assemble it easily.
The top of the box reads:
YANKEE GIRL PLUG TOBACCO
1 DOZEN CELLOPHANE WRAPPED
OPEN THIS SIDE
Two Yankee Girls flank the center banner holding red and white striped banners that read:
YANKEE GIRL UNION MADE
The front flap reads:
YANKEE GIRL PLUG
The front of the box reads:
YANKEE GIRL PLUG SCOTTEN - DILLON COMPANY DETROIT, MICH.
1 1/4 Lbs. Net
On the bottom, along with a seal that indicates that the product is made by the Tobacco Workers International Union:
SCOTTEN, DILLON COMPANY DETROIT, MICH.
The box, made by Michigan Carton Company of Battle Creek, Michigan, when assembled, measures 8-3/8 inches wide by 3-1/8 inches from front to back and 2-1/4 inches deep
This exceptionally well-preserved box is shipped flat for you to make - just like in the early 1930s when it was made. The wonderful colors and printing

Art Postcard - Smoke Rings
So many people associate smoke rings with sorry or loneliness, perhaps even boredom. Whatever this lovely photograph of a smoke ring amidst the wafts of smoke that either created it or are objects of it. Whatever it means, we think this photo from Donald Sultan, entitled Smoke Rings from January 28, 1999, is wonderful. Held either vertically or horizontally, it is equally striking.

The graphics may differ on the box. But, the best part is the self-tab on the inner box which makes it easy to pull out. We think this would be a great feature for a tiny travelling shrine that you might make of the matchbox.

Vintage Cigarette Trading Cards - Package of 10
Just like bubble gum (baseball) cards and other collectible cards, cards inserted into cigarette packs were collected from the end of the 19th century through the beginning of World War II. Usually they were issued in series and people would trade or collect them. On the front, you'll usually find a vivid pictures - usually a print or painting, but sometimes a photographic image. The flip-side would describe the front (and sometimes the other cards in the series) and indicate the advertiser and sometimes the artist.
Because they were created specifically to be collected, the manufacturers and printers chose appealing subjects: movie stars, royalty, circus animals, birds, airplanes, trees, butterflies, and more. Some people, in fact, purchased the cigarettes for the cards even though they didn't smoke!
Most cigarette trading cards are about 2-3/4 inches by 1-1/2 inches printed on card-weight paper, making them the perfect addition to your artwork. Our package contains an assortment of 10 assorted cards printed in vivid color, watercolor-like hues, sepia-tone or black and white. Glue one to a small piece of cardstock to make a special gift tag or doll-house poster! We're sure you'll find many uses for these wonderful cards!

Small Cigarette Smoker Edwardian Reproduction Paper Mask
More Masks More Hallowe'en
From about 1901 (right after the Victorian period) up to about 1910, or even as late as 1918 (after World War I), British society suffered a very rigid system, despite the new philosophies and politics floating about. The want (and need) for more liberal thought and a move for greater social acceptance of all British started despite the seemingly unmovable morés at the time.
The Edwardian Period was also known as the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era), a time for elegant masquerade balls with gorgeous gowns and absurd masks such as this, our Jester Cigarette Smoker.
