Fun to use in your artwork as is, or even altered. Each token measures between 7-8 and 15/16 inch in diameter.

We think they'd make a unique alternative or addition to hand-made coupons for friendly tasks!

Authentic Ancient Coin - The Widow's Mite

Widow's Mite - From the Time of Jesus

More Coins & Tokens

This is a genuine bronze coin minted in the Holy Land over 2,000 years ago, during the reign of Alexander Jannaeus. What makes this coin of great historical and religious importance is its two references in the Bible, in the books of both Mark and Luke, which relate Jesus' observations of a poor widow's exceptional charity. This coin is identical to the ones she would have had. Coins such as this have been known to collectors for hundreds of years as "Widow's Mites".

The two symbols found on the coin are an anchor within a circle, representing a diadem and an 8-pointed star. They are derived from earlier Greek coin designs that were used in the area. When these coins were originally issued, they were very crudely struck - most examples show odd shapes and off-center partial images. They were the lowest value coins of the period.

Each coin arrives in a small plastic folio, measuring 3-1/2 inches square, with the coin featured in the center. Every coin is different, but each one measures around 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

Even without the religious significance, the coin is a great collectible and arrives with the story of The Widow's Mite, along with a Biblical reference and a Certificate of Authenticity.

This was either for a mechanical bowling game or for advertising. Made of brass, we're sure this fun token was shiny bright when it was new. Now, you can see that wonderful patina that only true age can show. Stamped, JS, probably for the manufacturer, there is a bowling pin on one side and a bowling ball on the other. Great for adding an interesting historical piece to your jewelry or other creative projects.

Smashed Penny - with the 10 Commandments Impressed into It

Smashed Penny with the Ten commandments

More Pocket Tokens

Coins like these have many names, but our favorite is smashed pennies, aka elongated pennies and pressed pennies. The first elongated penny was created for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus during 1892-1893. There are some who believe that there were such coins produced earlier, but the experts have singled this celebration as the beginning.

A smashed penny is is made by forcing a penny (or other coin) through two steel rollers. There is an engraving on one of the rollers (sometimes both sides). A crank (mechanical or electronic) forces the coin through the rollers and squeezes it with extreme pressure. This smashes the coin from round to ...you guessed it...elongated. The pressure pushes the engraving into the penny at the same time it is smashing it.

We've been collecting these since we were children, and now our grandchildren collect them, too. These wonderful pennies feature the entire 10 Commandments - Can you imagine? The detail is amazing and you can read the entire list! These were made from shiny pre-1983 pennies, so there is a higher copper content than today's pennies.

Because they are smashed in the process of impressing the commandments, they are super thin, yet sturdy. The new oval shape measures about 1-5/16 long and about 13/16 wide. This makes a wonderful keepsake for your wallet or pocket. And, it's a lovely little token to give a friend, use in a shrine or even make into a necklace.

OPA is the abbreviation for the USA's Office of Price Administration. During World War II, many things were rationed, including bicycles, sugar, tires, rubber shoes, gasoline, coffee, cheese, typewriters and lots of other useful items that might be better used to serve the military forces.

Citizens were issued ration books with tickets or coupons to purchase the rationed items. These tokens were issued out of necessity as change when an entire ration amount was not available, or, if the patron did not need the entire ration.

They were issued between 1944 and 1945 and some are rarer than others. There are both blue and red coins. Blue tokens were for processed foods and reds were for meats and fats.

The tokens are 5/8 inch in diameter and most of the ones we have are red, but some are blue. Some are rarer than others, especially the ones that were struck off-center.

The coins are made of heavy duty fiberboard or masonite, not cardboard as many believe - cardboard would not have lasted in trade. Ration coupons (made of lightweight paper) were used only once - when the consumer presented the coupon to the vendor in exchange for the rationed item. Because the tokens, or coins, were used as change, they were used in trade more often.

All of our tokens are in great condition - some a touch better than others. Most are red, but a few are blue. Please allow us to choose a token randomly for you.

Cast in pewter, this simple pocket charm features an elegantly cast claddagh image - the heart, hands and crown, encircled by a lovely Celtic knot design.

On the reverse, it reads:

The symbol of the claddagh is well over 300 year old and was originally developed as a ring. There are so very many symbols held within the image itself. And, when worn as a ring, it has many more.

This pocket token features the heart - for love, the hands for friendship and, the crown represents loyalty. Originally, the heart was a stone and with a hand on either side of the heart, it represented the vast oceans that may come between loved ones. Of course, the Celtic circle around the the perimeter of each side of the token represents endless nature or eternity.

What a lovely gift for someone whom you hold dear to your heart. The token measures about 1-1/4 inch in diameter

Pieces of Eight

On July 24, 1715, Spain's treasure rich New Spain fleet sailed from Havana, Cuba with a cargo valued at fourteen million pesos in silver, gold and jewels. One week into the voyage near present day Vero Beach, Florida, they were met by a furious hurricane resulting in the loss of eleven of the fleet's twelve ships and hundreds of lives.

For nearly two hundred and fifty years the sea would hold the precious cargo secret, only occasionally tossing blackened silver coin or other objects to the shores as if to taunt would-be discoverers. Not until the 1960s would these shipwrecks (scattered over a forty mile area) begin to give up their treasures.

To this day, the 1715 Fleet continues to reward those who possess the knowledge, fortitude and courage to explore the often turbulent and treacherous waters just offshore of what has consequently become know as Florida's Treasure Coast

This replica coin is an 8 Reale - or, what is cut up to become Pieces of Eight. Measuring about 1-1/2 inch by 1-1/2 inch, it looks like a smashed piece of metal. Closer inspection shows the details of the coin on either side.

Made from shiny pre-1983 pennies, there is a higher copper content than if created with today's pennies.

This special little penny will make your sweetheart (present or potential) smile, for sure. It reads.:

Good for a Hug and a Kiss
Anytime ... Anywhere
xxx   ooo

There are several little hearts impressed into the penny, too!

Because they are smashed in the process of impressing the message, these souvenir pennies are super thin, yet sturdy. The new oval shape measures about 1-5/16 long and about 13/16 wide. This makes a wonderful keepsake for your wallet or pocket. And, it's a lovely little token to give to your beloved.

The Wonder Of It All (Hand-Pressed Token)

More Pocket Tokens

More Amulets

At a carnival in the 1950s, I made one of these wonderful tokens on a very special mechanical device. After thinking for what seemed to be ages of just the right sentiment, I impressed my name. 40 years later, my dear friend, Juliana and I found ourselves high atop a New York City landmark, and behold another of the very special machines!

This time, at Juliana's urging, we each made one just like the one in the illustration above, with the sentiment:

THE WONDER OF IT ALL

These machines are no longer manufactured, but you can find them few and far between at old-time amusement parks and other special places.

We found a wonderful new buddy, Tom, who has a machine of his own and he was kind enough to make these one at a time so we could offer them to SilverCrow's customers. He not only made them one at a time - and each letter had to be selected and then individually impressed manually on to each token!

If you can behold each day with wonder and treasure each of your friends as I do Juliana, then you'll need one of these for each of you. Add a simple ball chain key chain or necklace to compliment that old-fashioned feeling.

Each silvery token measures about 1-1/4 inch in diameter and features a four-leaf clover in the center, surrounded by the words:

GOOD LUCK

In the olden days of Pirates, coins were cut into eighths to make change. Back then, the true silver Spanish Ocho (8) Reale coin would be cut into pieces to make change. Our faux silver reproduction is true to shape and imprinting (but, alas, it is not real silvers). It is cut into pieces of the Eight Reale coin: one half, one quarter and two eighths!

This makes a fun gift for anyone interested in Pirates, the conquests of the sea, or history of money!

This sweet little box is decorated with leaves and holly atop the pudding. Each time an English family in centuries past would make a plum pudding, everyone made a wish in advance. A special sixpence was added to the ingredients. And after it was cooked, it was set aflame after the yuletide dinner. The scrumptious dessert was quickly consumed, and the lucky diner who discovered the coin in his/her portion was granted the wish and good fortune for the upcoming year.

Sixpence Coin for Good Fortune

Close-Up

Sixpence Coin - for Luck and Good Wishes

Long associated with a bride's good fortune, the sixpence is a coin of the British Empire. It was introduced in 1551 to represent 6 pennies. The last of the sixpence coins was produced in 1967.

Superstition was widespread in Medieval times. Almost every part of life was controlled by evil spirits, that needed to be assuaged. Talismans and tokens, including lucky coins, were the most popular of the amulets in use. Because they especially felt the presence of the spirits during ceremonies, many of these traditions have continued today.

Traditionally a gift of silver was made from the groom to the bride, and a sixpence (then totally made of silver), came to represent this token - and was usually included as a part of the bride's dowry - now making the gift from bride to groom!

The sixpence is now a symbol of good luck for any occasion, but especially for a wedding:

Something old
Something new
Something borrowed
Something blue
And a sixpence in her shoe

Start a new tradition in your family and use the same coin for your daughter's (or daughter-in-law's) slipper as you wore in your wedding!

Our sixpence are authentic and arrive in a decorative bag for a special presentation. Most are from the reign of Elizabeth II (1953-1967, when the last was made). Of course, each coin is different, so please let us choose one for you.
