Lovely pieces like this were originally used for powders for the face, or talcs for the body. Of course there would have been a fluffy powder puff inside. With the advent of inexpensive plastics in the 1930s, vanity items like these became more readily available. We are fortunate to have a few of these special powder boxes made of true celluloid.
Most cases are 2-3/4 inches in diameter (70 mm), some are a tiny bit larger and others a tiny bit smaller. The lid slides on for a nice fit. Please be careful if you really fill your case with powder - don't pick the box up by the lid or you'll have a powdery dresser top. When closed with the lid, the little case measures the same in height as the diameter (2-3/4 inches).
We love the old printed cardboard boxes as well as the metal ones, but there is something so warm about celluloid, both in the patina and the feel. We're sure you'll find just the perfect use for yours!

These were created in the 1920s in France for the French cosmetics industry and were never used.

So many years ago, lives were so much more discrete. Fine ladies secured their combs, brushes and other even their hairpins in elegant containers. Oh, how we adore these! We actually had made one or two years and years ago when we were little kids. This is the ultimate recycling - and even a great project for kids today. Cards contemporary with the maker were cut to size and then stitched together with cord, yarn or ribbon. An endless variety of cards made the patterns quite festive for year round use.
Of course, each one of our bowls are different. We're showing four of them for variability. They range in diameter from 3-1/2 to 5 inches and are quite the conversation piece!

Leaf-Shaped Bowl made of Recycled Paper

Adapting necessity to art, traditional basket-making techniques are used to make these wonderful little pots or bowls. Artisans use recycled posters from printing companies. First they make long flat strips of paper, dipped in glue - then dried. Then, after the strips dry, the artisans wet them again form them into useable shapes, like this little bowl with a lid. It is all held together with the glue as the strips are coiled. Sturdy household items are the result.
The brightly colored random patterns are derived from the shapes and the contents of the posters used, so you may see some printed words on yours, too.
We were particularly enchanted with the leaf-shape of this clever bowl. It is great in any room - even on your desk. It measures about 5-1/2 by 2-1/4 inches.

This stunning clip holder hails from the largest African Tribe (the Zulu). The Zulu have long been known for unmatched skill and artistry in weaving baskets from native grasses. Urban Zulu, faced with little access to natural materials, are now fashioning the same baskets from recycled telephone wire. This bright, washable and sturdy basket, or mbenge, is one of many created in unlimited colors combinations of intricate, mesmerizing designs. No two are alike - as the colors of the wire available and the patterns differ!
This gorgeous bowl will make a striking statement in any room - the multicolor wires are the most exciting of all of our designs. The colors are the same in each of the bowls and the patterns are very, very similar, but not exactly the same - making each bowl a masterpiece work of art that only you will have.

Young scarab beetles seemed to emerge spontaneously from burrows. Because of that, they were considered either sacred or lucky. The antenna on the beetle's head helped it to roll dung into its burrow, where the females laid their eggs. Later, the youngsters fed on the dung. In mythology, the scarabs are pictured using their antennae to push the sun along its course in the sky.

Vintage Medicine Bottle with Cork
How very delighted we were to have found a box full of these wonderful bottles. Each measures 4-1/4 inches high by 1-3/4 inch wide and 7/8 inch from front to back. The top lip boasts a spout. In fact, on the bottom of the bottle, the molded glass reads:

and in a little pennant triangle logo, the company name:
PERFCO
The back of the bottle is softly rounded and the the front is flattened, so that you can easily apply a label, if you like. At the top of the label area are molded characters. These vary from bottle to bottle. The illustrated bottle reads:

There were no corks in the bottles when we found them, but we thought we'd add one for a nice touch. You can certainly easily remove the cork, if you choose.
These would be great for homemade concoctions, assemblage artwork or whatever your imagination provides. Consider adding beeswax or sealing wax to the cork for a medieval feel!

Now you'll wish you were the Easter Bunny, just so you can carry one of these darling little baskets on your back. In fact, these little wooden woven baskets were made to be carried by bunny statues and candy containers in the 1930s.
The basket measures between 1-3/4 and 1-5/8 inches high and is tapered, with the larger end (about 1 inch in diameter) open on top - ready for you to fill with chenille goodies, or even the real thing - candy! Each basket has a lovely silken ribbon woven through the upper staves to hold the little basket on its bunny!

One Ounce Amber Glass Bottle with Dropper
What a great little bottle for storing light sensitive mixtures. The glass and the pipette (dropper) are all glass. The stopper is a rubber bulb with a twist black plastic lid. We really just liked the looks of these.
SilverCrow suggests that our regular pipettes (eye droppers) be used as a unique way of adding a controlled amount of water to your watercolor pans or to your penciled-in watercolors on paper. With these little bottles, you can have your water (or other liquid) ready at any moment by storing it inside! The amber color helps protect the contents from fading.

Our Buddha Urn pendants are glazed on the inside to hold liquids. They are not meant for food or drink contents, so, you might add an essential oil, or some earth from a special place for safekeeping.

Elegant Amber Glass Ampoule
The unique styling of these glass 1-ml ampoules (aka, ampules) makes them exactly what you need for your assemblage, collage or any mixed media project. They are made of borosilicate glass. The color of the amber glass ampoules is reminiscent of a beer bottle. Each measures 1 milliliter (10.6mm x 67mm).
Wooden Box with Sliding Glass Top

Plastic Test Tubes
These are the 75ml polystyrene unbreakable test tubes we once used to package our mica. They are quite wonderful for storage, for sea-faring "notes in a bottle", to add to mail art collages in soda pop bottles, to start seedlings, as a vase for a single bud, to tie together as a container for found objects, the list goes on…
Comes with tight fitting, but removable, plastic cork. Tube is just about 1/2" in diameter and 3 inches long. The cap adds another 1/2" to the length of the tube.

Mini Glass Test Tube Charm
These teeny glass test tubes are ideal for any of your collages or assemblages. They are about one inch long before the cork is inserted. The tiny brass loop allows you to string on a chain or use as a charm. The loop can be easily removed, but be careful as it is tiny!
Each test tube measures 1-1/8 inch and with the cork and loop, the total length is 1-1/4 inch. It is about 3/16 in diameter.

Watch parts have long been a staple in collage and assemblage, and especially prevalent in steampunk jewelry! Little glass vials are also popular - and vintage items are even more precious as each day there are fewer and fewer old things available.
We have been fortunate in finding these vintage vials from Sweden. None are a like, but some are the same size. The average length is a bit over an inch. Some have watch parts in them; some are empty. Some are numbered, some are not - so, please let us choose one for you!
