Gorgeous Vintage Aquamarine Glass Intaglio Cabochon of the Taj Mahal
More Components
More Valentines & Hearts
This lovely transparent aquamarine glass intaglio cabochon features an image of the Taj Mahal that has then been highlighted with a silver foil application. The piece measures 11/16 inches on all sides and features faceted rounded corners. The depth of the piece is just a smidgen over 1/4 inch. The image is lovely on either side, but glorious on the aqua side, which would normally be considered the top, which is smooth. The underside has been cut to create the intaglio and then foiled with silver for the reflective effect.
The Taj Mahal is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world by all cultures. Built as a memorial and mausoleum for the third (and favorite) wife of Shah Jahan in Agra, India, the building took over 16 years to complete. Mumtaz died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begam. The grounds and out buildings took another 5 years to complete.
Built in 1632 by Shah Jahan in Agra, India, it is a memorial and the mausoleum for his third (and favorite) wife, Mumtaz. She died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begam.
Long associated with deep and everlasting love, the Taj Mahal has become endeared to many around the world.
Intaglios are engraved, pressed or incised into gemstones or glass. The design is carved or pressed into the surface, and sinks below the surface. It is the opposite of a cameo - where the background is carved away, leaving the design as a relief on top. Intaglios have been made since Babylonian times and were used in printmaking as well as in jewelry.
Two intaglios are shown to illustrate front and back.

More Asian Items
These gorgeous vintage appliqués were originally sewn to saris for extra embellishment and good fortune. The image is a double evil eye, created from sequins, silver and gold bullion and glass beads.
Each of these has been hand sewn to a backing for stability. These may be sewn or glued to your project. Or, you might choose to take one apart for the vintage components. These are quite old and are in good to very good condition. The workmanship is stunning considering that these have lasted for decades - and have been removed from their original place to be re-used.
WE love the patina on the bullion that only comes with age - this cannot be imitated. Each piece measures approximately 2-1/8 inches wide by 1 inch high.
Several pieces are shown for illustration. Please let us choose one for you.

The koi has long been a popular symbol throughout Asian legend, myth and art. Generally pictured with head up, the koi usually swims upstream - even against a very strong current. For this reason this elegant fish is often used as a symbol to represent strength in adversity. The koi is always moving, and never gives up. Because of its unique traits, the koi has also become a representative symbol for the non-conformist for "going against the flow".
This lovely charm measures about 3/4 inch long by 3/8 inch wide and about 1/8 inch thick. The location of the hanging loop makes the fish seem as though s/he is swimming upstream.

Yin-Yang Button Pin
More Pinback Buttons
The Yin Yang is a well known Taoist symbol, representing the balance of opposites in the universe. Without opposites, there is chaos and confusion. When opposites are equally present, there is clam.
There are many traditions regarding the exact definition, however, the philosophical vision without words, is most common - the design of the symbol itself implies calm.
Some traditions see one side as soft, the other hard - even opposites exist here. As some say the yin is soft and others say it is the yang. It has come to represent so many opposites, it almost does not matter which is which.
since nothing in nature is purely one way or purely the other, the symbol includes a small black spot in the white swirl, and a white spot in the black swirl. Yin-Yang is thought by the Taoists to be upset when humans intervene in nature and disrupt the balance.
Our pinback button measures about 1 inch in diameter.

Peking Glass Bead
More Asian-Inspired Goods
Peking Glass is quite interesting in that it is made in layers and then carved away. In this way, it is much like cinnabar. The glass is placed in the kiln and then layered onto the mandrill forming a bead. This may be in one color only - or in layers of multiple colors. Once the glass has reached the state that the artist has envisioned, it is then carved away to form designs.
Most Peking glass you'll find is in the form of snuff bottles and vases. There are also many trade beads made of this special glass, but generally they will not have been carved.
Each of our larger Peking glass beads is white and layered in blue. The blue glass has been carved away to create the designs. Our illustration is of one bead from three different points of view. Beads measure approximately 3/4 to 7/8 inch in diameter. The designs on all beads are similar. But, because these are made by hand, they will never be exactly the same.
If you order more than one bead, we will do our best to make sure that they are similar in size unless you tell us otherwise.
Peking glass is fragile, so please be careful when you use them in your artwork or jewelry-making. They are best not used for bracelets as bracelets often get more bumping than earrings and necklaces. These are lovely beads and will last a long time if treated with care.

Yatagarasu - Mimikaki - Lucky 3-Legged Crow Ear Cleaner
More Remedies
More Japanese and Other Asian Items
More Crows
In the USA, we're taught as babies to never stick anything inside our ears. Elsewhere in this wide world, the advice is quite the opposite. Ear cleaners such as these cute little crow cleaners are sold worldwide for cleanliness - we've even seen them in a shop at Paris' Charles de Gaulle International Airport.
Mimikaki are the traditional ear cleaners of Japan, a personal healthcare tool with a scoop-like end used for getting the wax out of the ears. Some of these are quite elegant, some are very Bauhaus and others are cute - like ours - which features a yatagarasu - a lucky crow with three legs.
In Japanese mythology, the appearance of a raven or crow with three legs is evidence of divine intervention into human affairs. There is some controversy over the crow's gender, appearance and size. But there is very little dissention regarding the fact that s/he is lucky for the beholder.
The stick measures 4-3/4 inches long.

Pair of Modern Cinnabar Dragon Beads in Red
Cinnabar Dragon Bead
Cinnabar Longevity Bead
Each of these diamond beads features a molded image that genuinely resembles a carved bead with a featured dragon. Each bead is hand made in the modern tradition of cinnabar, evoking the spirit of centuries-past Asian artisans' work.
These beads are reversible and the stringing hole is about 1mm. These make a stunning pair of earrings, especially when paired with black crystals and golden findings. Each bead measures about 1/2 inch square by about 1/4 inch thick. The dragon is a popular symbol in Asian culture, conjuring the spirit of masculine vigor and power. It is also fifth sign in Chinese zodiac.
True cinnabar is deadly, made of red mercuric sulfide. [If, by the way, you have any vintage or antique cinnabar, be sure to treat it with care and do not wear it against your skin. Keep it away from animals.] Modern cinnabar beads, like these, are made from molded resin that really appears to resemble the vintage type.

3D Art Postcard - Hokusai Katsushika - The Great Wave
More 3D Lenticulars
We love lenticulars - the layered paper and plastics that create a moving 3-dimensional effect. This wonderfully mailable post card features the familiar image of the Great Wave by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai who lived from 1760 to 1849.
He is quite famous for his wonderful wood-cut prints of the Ukiyo-e, pictures of the floating world - everyday life. His works seems to be more popular in the West than it has ever been in his homeland.
His striking image of the sea completed in this new lenticular form is simply spectacular - the movement is amazing. In fact the sea appears to transform into mountains, another of the artists favorite subjects. Although the transformation is hard to notice online, we're sure you'll be as awed by the images in person.

108 Buddhas on a Walnut
Carefully carved on this unopened walnut shell are the miniscule representations of 108 bald, sitting Buddhas. This amulet is often carried for good luck.
The number 108 is quite important in the Buddhist traditions. Buddhist malas consist of 108 beads. Bells are rung 108 times at the beginning of the new year for luck.
Because walnuts are natural, each of these is completely different from the next. But, all measure about 1-1/2 inch. The walnut is hand-carved with the nutmeat still inside. While the carver strove to carve 108 Buddhas, the the number may vary and may not reach the auspicious and sacred number. This does not make it any less lucky, and we're sure you'll enjoy counting them.

Hand carved woodblocks have been the traditional means of printing in Nepal for centuries. Even today, prayer books in Himalayan Buddhist monasteries are printed from such blocks.
Handheld tools are carefully used to cut the designs out of "sisau", a type of cedar. Lokta paper handmade from the bark of the Daphne tree is traditionally harvested so that the tree may regenerate.
To print, simply press your woodblock onto the inkpad provided (or one of your own). Then on a padded surface (for example on a pile of newspapers or several layers of cloth), place a piece of lokta paper and firmly press the woodblock. Gently rock the block in all directions to achieve a clear print.
A description of the symbolism accompanies the set, too.

Hand-Painted Ceramic Mini Buddha Bead
More Buddhas
More Tiny Things
These little beads (11x9x8mm) are hand-painted ceramic with cloaks available in many colors. This little replica of the great Buddha has a rounded bottom, and is drilled from top to bottom.
We love these as they can also be used as mini statues.
Because these are hand-made beads and they are so tiny, the holes vary in size from .8 mm to 1.5 mm. And, of course, because they are hand-painted, no two are alike. Colors vary. Please let us choose one for you.
Several beads are shown for illustration.

hand-painted ceramic Buddha bead
The detail on this stylized replica bead is astounding. His cloak is painted purple and his hands and feet are finely detailed as well.
Buddha is drilled from right to left, and the hole is large enough for a thin leather cord. Because the hole is not prominent, consider using him as the center of a small shrine, or add him to a niche in an altered book on eastern philosophies. We have him sitting atop an old chalkboard, ensuring that only well-thought messages are written.
