Adjustable Indian Duri Necklace

More Chains

We fell in love with these at a jewelry show several years ago and have never found them again! The necklace is made to hook onto a pendant with two lobster claw clasps. The deep coppery gold is made of metal bullion and is capped with wrapped golden thread. You can adjust the length of the necklace by sliding the threaded knot above the golden wraps up and down. It adjusts from 12 inches to 27 inches.

This versatile chain or necklace will showcase individual pendants that you can change each time you wear it.

The length is a standard 18 inches. Clasps may vary slightly. We're showing the two lobster claws hooked to each other for fun!

These lovely Geisha are dressed in blue with touches of red and are each a little different from the next. Not just because they are hand painted, but because the stance is a bit different in each.

We think that these little fellows were created originally for setting up miniature scenes for railroads or Lilliput villages, but we are really not sure. Some of them have an original metal pick in the bottom - probably for positioning in your diorama or display. We prefer them without the picks and most stand on their own. But we've not changed any of them.

Each figurine was hand painted and the paint shows some wear. We're showing 3 samples so that you might see the differences. We love the true patina that only real time offers such pieces.

Each Geisha measures about 1-1/4 inch high by 1/4 inch wide and about 1/4 inch from front to back. When there are stems, they vary in length, most being about 7/8 inch. Some of these ladies also feature a hole right where their arms meet so that they might carry something in their arms.

These are lightweight, making them perfect for even altered art jewelry projects.

We expect that these are from the 1920s through 1940s, but we've not been able to find a date on any of them. Some are marked with their country of origin, Japan.

These have been dusted off, but the metal, if any, is rusty, so please be careful. We never clean any vintage or antique items completely so as to not ruin the value.

We've never seen anything like these before, so we are quite delighted to offer them to you. Please let us choose one for you.

We cannot be sure as we do not read Chinese, but suspect these to be practice sheets from a student of Asian calligraphy. The same characters seem to be written over and over again and in some places the the handwriting has been stamped with a red chop. Most of the ink is black, although some has faded and a very few have some ink splotches where the student made and corrected an error.

Each sheet measures 9-3/4 by 5-1/4 inch. The handwriting is on one side only. However the ink has carried through to the other side.

These are a fortunate find as practice sheets are generally discarded. We're showing several sheets so that you might see the similarity and variance.

We were taken more by the knotting than anything else on this lovely necklace made of rayon. The knots are just so uniform and elegant! The open loops will allow you to add additional charms if you choose.

It measures 26 inches and is knotted without a clasp - but the end knot is easy to untie, so you might lengthen it with a chain if you choose. We prefer to just slip it over our heads (please take off your glasses first!).

The beads are white porcelain with traditional butterflies, flowers or trees. Each necklace is different and features at least four beads.

The original artwork for this lovely holy card was painted by John Lu Hung Nien of Peking (Beijing), China. He was a convert to Catholicism as he studied art at the Catholic University of Peking. This image has become quite famous because of the depth of emotion in the artwork as well as for the lack of many Asian Catholic images.

This set of 8 standard sized holy cards arrives on a sheet - ready for you to print yourself! They are meant for both laser printers and ink jet printers, but we have not tried them in every printer. There is not a template provided with them, but with a few calculations, they should print for you in whatever package you use.

Because they are blank on the back, you might choose to rubber stamp the backs, or indeed, use calligraphy or even a sticker. They are micro-perforated for ease of separating.

The Indian pice was the smallest unit of currency in India during British rule (1858-1947).  There were 192 pices in a rupee. These coins were not used after 1947. Most of the ones that we have are bronze and are from the early 20th century (from about 1912 through 1930) - although some are earlier and some later. They all appear to be bronze and feature a nicely aged patina and a large center hole. The hole is really part of the coin and not drilled afterwards as with some coins used for jewelry.

Each measures about 7/8 inch in diameter and the center hole is about 7/16 in diameter.

More Valentines & Hearts

This lovely transparent aquamarine glass intaglio cabochon features an image of the Taj Mahal that has then been highlighted with a silver foil application. The piece measures 11/16 inches on all sides and features faceted rounded corners. The depth of the piece is just a smidgen over 1/4 inch. The image is lovely on either side, but glorious on the aqua side, which would normally be considered the top, which is smooth. The underside has been cut to create the intaglio and then foiled with silver for the reflective effect.

The Taj Mahal is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world by all cultures. Built as a memorial and mausoleum for the third (and favorite) wife of Shah Jahan in Agra, India, the building took over 16 years to complete. Mumtaz died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begam. The grounds and out buildings took another 5 years to complete.

Built in 1632 by Shah Jahan in Agra, India, it is a memorial and the mausoleum for his third (and favorite) wife, Mumtaz. She died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begam.

Long associated with deep and everlasting love, the Taj Mahal has become endeared to many around the world.

Intaglios are engraved, pressed or incised into gemstones or glass. The design is carved or pressed into the surface, and sinks below the surface. It is the opposite of a cameo - where the background is carved away, leaving the design as a relief on top. Intaglios have been made since Babylonian times and were used in printmaking as well as in jewelry.

Two intaglios are shown to illustrate front and back.

These are quite old and are in good to very good condition. The workmanship is stunning considering that these have lasted for decades - and have been removed from their original place to be re-used.

WE love the patina on the bullion that only comes with age - this cannot be imitated. Each piece measures approximately 2-1/8 inches wide by 1 inch high.

Several pieces are shown for illustration. Please let us choose one for you.

The koi has long been a popular symbol throughout Asian legend, myth and art. Generally pictured with head up, the koi usually swims upstream - even against a very strong current. For this reason this elegant fish is often used as a symbol to represent strength in adversity. The koi is always moving, and never gives up. Because of its unique traits, the koi has also become a representative symbol for the non-conformist for "going against the flow".

This lovely charm measures about 3/4 inch long by 3/8 inch wide and about 1/8 inch thick. The location of the hanging loop makes the fish seem as though s/he is swimming upstream.

The Yin Yang is a well known Taoist symbol, representing the balance of opposites in the universe. Without opposites, there is chaos and confusion. When opposites are equally present, there is clam.

There are many traditions regarding the exact definition, however, the philosophical vision without words, is most common - the design of the symbol itself implies calm.

Some traditions see one side as soft, the other hard - even opposites exist here. As some say the yin is soft and others say it is the yang. It has come to represent so many opposites, it almost does not matter which is which.

since nothing in nature is purely one way or purely the other, the symbol includes a small black spot in the white swirl, and a white spot in the black swirl. Yin-Yang is thought by the Taoists to be upset when humans intervene in nature and disrupt the balance.

Our pinback button measures about 1 inch in diameter.

White & Blue Peking Glass Bead

Peking Glass Bead

More Beads

More Asian-Inspired Goods

Peking Glass is quite interesting in that it is made in layers and then carved away. In this way, it is much like cinnabar. The glass is placed in the kiln and then layered onto the mandrill forming a bead. This may be in one color only - or in layers of multiple colors. Once the glass has reached the state that the artist has envisioned, it is then carved away to form designs.

Most Peking glass you'll find is in the form of snuff bottles and vases. There are also many trade beads made of this special glass, but generally they will not have been carved.

Each of our larger Peking glass beads is white and layered in blue. The blue glass has been carved away to create the designs. Our illustration is of one bead from three different points of view. Beads measure approximately 3/4 to 7/8 inch in diameter. The designs on all beads are similar. But, because these are made by hand, they will never be exactly the same.

If you order more than one bead, we will do our best to make sure that they are similar in size unless you tell us otherwise.

Peking glass is fragile, so please be careful when you use them in your artwork or jewelry-making. They are best not used for bracelets as bracelets often get more bumping than earrings and necklaces. These are lovely beads and will last a long time if treated with care.

In the USA, we're taught as babies to never stick anything inside our ears. Elsewhere in this wide world, the advice is quite the opposite. Ear cleaners such as these cute little crow cleaners are sold worldwide for cleanliness - we've even seen them in a shop at Paris' Charles de Gaulle International Airport.

Mimikaki are the traditional ear cleaners of Japan, a personal healthcare tool with a scoop-like end used for getting the wax out of the ears. Some of these are quite elegant, some are very Bauhaus and others are cute - like ours - which features a yatagarasu - a lucky crow with three legs.

In Japanese mythology, the appearance of a raven or crow with three legs is evidence of divine intervention into human affairs. There is some controversy over the crow's gender, appearance and size. But there is very little dissention regarding the fact that s/he is lucky for the beholder.

The stick measures 4-3/4 inches long.

Cinnabar Dragon Bead

Cinnabar Longevity Bead

Each of these diamond beads features a molded image that genuinely resembles a carved bead with a featured dragon. Each bead is hand made in the modern tradition of cinnabar, evoking the spirit of centuries-past Asian artisans' work.

These beads are reversible and the stringing hole is about 1mm. These make a stunning pair of earrings, especially when paired with black crystals and golden findings. Each bead measures about 1/2 inch square by about 1/4 inch thick. The dragon is a popular symbol in Asian culture, conjuring the spirit of masculine vigor and power. It is also fifth sign in Chinese zodiac.

True cinnabar is deadly, made of red mercuric sulfide. [If, by the way, you have any vintage or antique cinnabar, be sure to treat it with care and do not wear it against your skin. Keep it away from animals.] Modern cinnabar beads, like these, are made from molded resin that really appears to resemble the vintage type.

Japanese Sumi Ink in Glass Topped Box

High Quality Sumi Ink Stick in Glass-Topped box

More Paints & Pigments

Sumi ink has been made in the traditional fashion - from burnt wood - for more than 3,000 years. Asian artisans process the wood residue from burnt wood into solid sticks of ink in the same manner today - just a bit more quickly with modern equipment. The pine soot from pine or vegetable oils is mixed with animal or fish glue. The glue insures that the ink can be molded. It is then dried to form a well-shaped solid block which. To use the ink, it  must be ground into a stone - and water added to it (usually with a Water Dropper).

Nothing is more special for creating the many subtle shades of black and grey, that characterizes traditional Sumi painting.

Even if you're not a Sumi artist, you might not be able to resist - this makes a perfect embellishment for a special Asian assemblage or collage. Each stick has the same characters on the back and features different flowers on the front.

We're showing 3 sticks for comparison. The box is just lovely and might be used for a small shrine or other altered art project.

The box measures 4-1/4 inches by 1-1/4 inch by 1/2 inch deep. The wrapped stick is slightly smaller at 3-13/16 inches long by 15/16 inch wide by 6/16 inch deep.

More Items of the Sea

We love lenticulars - the layered paper and plastics that create a moving 3-dimensional effect. This wonderfully mailable post card features the familiar image of the Great Wave by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai who lived from 1760 to 1849.

He is quite famous for his wonderful wood-cut prints of the Ukiyo-e, pictures of the floating world - everyday life. His works seems to be more popular in the West than it has ever been in his homeland.

His striking image of the sea completed in this new lenticular form is simply spectacular - the movement is amazing. In fact the sea appears to transform into mountains, another of the artists favorite subjects. Although the transformation is hard to notice online, we're sure you'll be as awed by the images in person.

108 Buddhas on a Walunt

Close-Up

108 Buddhas on a Walnut

Carefully carved on this unopened walnut shell are the miniscule representations of 108 bald, sitting Buddhas. This amulet is often carried for good luck.

The number 108 is quite important in the Buddhist traditions. Buddhist malas consist of 108 beads. Bells are rung 108 times at the beginning of the new year for luck.

Because walnuts are natural, each of these is completely different from the next. But, all measure about 1-1/2 inch. The walnut is hand-carved with the nutmeat still inside. While the carver strove to carve 108 Buddhas, the the number may vary and may not reach the auspicious and sacred number. This does not make it any less lucky, and we're sure you'll enjoy counting them.

More Tiny Things

These little beads (11x9x8mm) are hand-painted ceramic with cloaks available in many colors. This little replica of the great Buddha has a rounded bottom, and is drilled from top to bottom.

We love these as they can also be used as mini statues.

Because these are hand-made beads and they are so tiny, the holes vary in size from .8 mm to 1.5 mm. And, of course, because they are hand-painted, no two are alike. Colors vary. Please let us choose one for you.

Several beads are shown for illustration.

Chinese food coupons

Just the thing for any colorful Asian project, these coupons will also make a great show-and-tell item for any grade school student.

When we first discovered these, we thought they were made of paper, but after touching them, we realized how wrong we were! They seem to be made of acetate or some other plastic material - which lends them to some exciting possibilities for alteration!

Our package of 5 includes one of each color.

Viscose Zipper Bag - Hindu Gods and Goddesses

Close-Up

Hindu Gods-Goddesses zipper Bag

The very first time we saw these little zipper bags, we knew we had to offer them to SilverCrow customers. The coated viscose is printed with vibrantly colored renderings of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

They are all hand-made by artisans, so each is different. Colors and images vary tremendously. But each is a work of art in itself.

The fabric is no other - it is waterproof. However, because it has a standard zipper, it is not leak proof.  Equally appropriate as a gift sack, change purse or treasure pouch, you'll want several of these little bags. At approximately 3-1/4 inches by 3-1/2 inches, you'll find them very versatile.

We can't guarantee you a particular God or Goddess as we never know which ones we'll receive. However, if you specify a preference, we'll try to accommodate your choice.

More Bracelets

Our 7-1/2 inch Asian bracelet is more on the elegant side. Lustrous with black velvet three-quarter length sleeves, you'll want to wear 3 or 4 of them together. Images alternate between a traditional Dragon and Longevity character.

Each of the 7 charms is set in a bezel of white metal plated with antiqued sterling silver plate. An actual photograph is encapsulated in a washable, dry-cleanable, non-yellowing and non-scratch resin -- creating a glowing almost 3-D effect.

Chinese Happy Birthday Script

Of course you can place these plastic Birthday picks in your chocolate cupcakes, but we thought they were simply grand as an addition to any Chinese-themed assemblage or collage, or even a travel journal (real or imagined).

The pick is easily removed by snipping with wire cutters or unimportant scissors - or use it to balance the script when tucked into a niche or envelope
