Genuine Wampum Shell Tube Bead

Genuine Quahog Shell

Just the word wampum conjures magical thoughts of long ago. Made from the shell of the quahog clam, wampum was used in trading and ornamentation by the Native Americans and early European traders and settlers in the Americas. The inside of the shells feature gorgeous purple and ivory or white stripings and solids. The purple stripes are indications of the growth of the shell.

Beads made from the purple shell are called suckauhock and were worth twice as much as the ivory or white beads, called wompampeage. We find it quite interesting that the species name for the quahog is the Latin mercinaria mercinaria, which is the root of the word mercenary (one who acts or works for merely reward or money).

The Narragansett Tribes in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas were the purveyors of the quahog shells and the beads and other adornments made from them.

We are proud to offer these special tube beads made in the traditional manner by Native Americans and non-Native Americans alike. The beads measure approximately 10mm long by 4mm in diameter and have slim stringing hole that works well with traditional and modern stringing materials.

Two beads shown for illustration only. Because the beads are made from natural shell, there will be variation, so please let us chose one for you.

Such gorgeous butterflies - and just the perfect beads for the Days of the Dead! What a lovely addition to a shrine or ofrenda these would make.

The gorgeous monarch butterflies that summer up north return to Mexico for the winter. They enjoy the protection of the oyamel fir trees. Anyone would welcome the lovely butterflies just for their beauty, but the local residents believe that the butterflies bear the spirits of their beloved ancestors, which are honored during Los Dias de los Muertos.

The stringing hole goes from top to bottom and measures just under 3mm, so it should accommodate many beading techniques. The beads measure 1 inch from top to bottom and 1-1/8 inch from wing tip to wing tip.

No two are painted the same and wing color differs, as does the decoration. Each little butterfly has a flower in her hair as well!

In Greek mythology, Medusa (Μέδουσα) is known as a guardian or protectress.  It has been said that Medusa was originally a beautiful nymph, wanted by many men, until she was raped by Poseidon in Athena's temple. And, Athena transformed Medusa's beautiful hair to serpents and she made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn those who gazed upon her into stone.

Medusa has, over time, represented both beauty and the grotesque at once. She has come to represent women's struggle against violence and many modern myths have been created about her.

Our Medusa bead measures 3/4 long and 5/16 wide, with a generous opening for your cord or wire from top to bottom - making her perfect for art dolls.

Legend has it that the evil eye of jealousy from friend or foe can trouble you, or, indeed, cause you harm! Now we can't promise that SilverCrow's handmade Blue Evil Eye Beads can ward off such trouble, but given the right circumstances, perhaps the representation will help the wearer or owner. Such talismans turn jealous eyes away and grant protection from such harm. Each eye is hand made and is different from the next.

These flattened blue circular beads measure about 14mm by 8.5mm and are created by lampwork. The eye can be seen on both sides! The hole measures between 1.8 and 2.8mm, so there are lots of possibilities with these beads each bead.

Because they are hand-made, the beads will vary in size, shape, color, hole size and hole size. We think the variability adds to their charm.

Hand-Made Ceramic Good Fortune Kitty Bead

Long know for good fortune, our handmade ceramic bead will surely add some luck to your artwork. This wonderful three-dimensional bead measures 24 by 16 by 15 mm. The large hole (between 2.5-3mm) goes from side to side (see the picture above - line indicates path). Maneki Neko (Good Fortune Kitty) is a symbol of bountiful luck in Asian cultures. The cat is often found at work or at home at an entryway, as the welcomer. The front paw is raised as if it is inviting luck, fortune and happiness to the place.

More Beads

At a little over 1 inch high, this little grim reaper bead will work wonderfully in any Day of the Dead themed project, altar, shrine or nicho. Akin to Santisima Muerte, the representation of death need not carry a negative meaning. Because the bead is flat on the bottom, most of these can be used as tiny statues. Of course, each bead is hand-made, and therefore, unique. Please let SilverCrow choose one for you.

Genuine Indian and Buffalo Nickel Buttons

Cooper Indian Head Cent Button

Made from genuine American Nickels from yesteryear, you'll just love these buttons for clothing, book closures, bracelet and necklace clasps and more. These are made from real nickels and have a shank on the reverse to allow for attaching to you final project.

Of course each of these is different as they are authentic nickels that have been circulated for commerce, so the wear on each will be different and years vary. They've been highly polished and will be perfect for use right away! Because these coins are no longer minted, they will make any project ever the more special.

Boon Face Bead

Bone Face Bead

Hand-carved of bone, this uniquely intriguing bead might be the face of the moon or the sun - or of your next art doll or amulet. What we really love about it is that the stringing holes are on the back, so that the front, top and bottom of the bead remain unmarred by the holes - making it perfect for the face of a fabric doll.

With a hint of blue in each eye, we know you'll find a million uses for this great 25mm diameter bead

Because each is hand-carved, each has its own special characteristics, while they are all similar.
