Leonardo Rope Maker
Kumihimo is a Japanese braiding technique that has allowed artisans to produce both functional and decorative braids for decades. The traditional tool for creating kumihimo braids is the marudai - usually hand made of wood. If you just want to try your hand at this traditional craft, then this kit with a small braiding board is just for you!
The most common braids use sets of 8, 16 or 32 strands, each strand usually comprising several threads. Finished braids can be used for jewelry, belts or ties.
Not only do you wind up with a beautiful product, you'll learn a traditional art form that is both soothing to do and exciting to accomplish.
The tools required are simple: a working stand or board and weighted bobbins, one bobbin required for each strand of thread.

Amate Bark Painting Kit
We were so excited when we received these! They were made especially for SilverCrow.
Our Wooden Nicho can be used as a shrine or shadowbox - perfect for a diorama or special memory box.
It is free standing (see the side view) - but easily adapts to hanging if you add a picture hanger to the back.
Mexican papermaking dates back to the pre-Columbian era. Bark paper, made by the Tepehua, Nahua and Otomi Indians, was created for religious rituals and for recording information and legend. This richly beautiful paper is made from ficus and mulberry trees, native to the area.
Traditionally painted with symbolic designs in bright earth colors, the art of amate painting has now evolved to use the more modern painting techniques, but the bark paper is still made in the same fashion.
We were delighted to find this neat little kit that will help you make your own amate painting. The image has been inked on to traditional bark paper - ready for you to paint. Paints, brushes and ribbon for decorating are all included to help you complete your project. Instructions are in both English and Spanish.
Because these kits are made by artists (the inked image is hand drawn or block printed) and because of the nature of natural bark paper, each is different. The designs vary as well as the project paper size and shape. Please let us choose a kit just for you.

Although the instructions are en Français (in French) only, you'll have little or no trouble building this replica of Paris' most famous landmark.
The kit is sizeable: 12 by 10 inches. You'll cut and construct a paper La Tour Eiffel (circa 1937), scaled 1 millimeter to 1 meter. It is a pièce de résistance for Francophiles and model-builders alike. The images are elegant and evocative of the Art Deco styles of the 1930s.

Wooden Nicho Shrine with Concha
The shadowbox portion is about 5-1/4 inches wide by about 7 inches high. The niche is approximately 1-1/2 inches deep and about 3-1/2 inches high by 2-1/4 inches wide. The concha curved part on top) measures about 2-1/4 high inches by 4 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.
In the sample on the right, the artist has scored (with a nail) the angles between the concha scallops to define the image a bit better. This works easily because of the nature of the recycled wood.
SilverCrow's Wood Nicho is much the same as the traditional ones used for shrines in Mexico and the other Latin Nations of the Americas.
The wood is rough when you receive it, so you'll want to sand it a bit before working with it or you might get a splinter.
