Diego Rivera was among the greatest of the Mexican muralists that flourished after the country's revolution. Influenced by Cubism as well as pre-Columbian wall paintings, Rivera's works are characterized by his fervent belief in Marxism.
A Mexican painter deeply influenced by indigenous culture, Frida Kahlo suffered a series of physical traumas. She contracted polio at age 6, and at 19 sustained injuries in a bus accident from which she was plagued by extreme pain for the rest of her life. Drawing on her personal life, Kahlo's work is characterized by its stark portrayal of pain

This evocative image of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo features detail of her Self-Portrait with Monkeys, painted in 1943. Frida painted this self-portrait during the period in which she was to teach at the School of Painting & Sculpture in Mexico City. Soon after accepting the position, her condition worsened, and she was forced to move her classes to her home. Only four loyal students remained, and some believe that she has represented them here as her companions.
