Vintage Silver Metal Choir Cross
More Medals & Milagros
More Vintage
Such crosses were worn by the choir members (and still are) over their cassocks & surplices. We are, of course, quite taken by them as they are vintage.
This style of cross would be excellent for assemblage jewelry as the surface on either side is absolutely flat - so that you can add your embellishments easily with adhesive or solder. Or, you might choose to change the ribbon that holds them and add a chain or leather thong for a different look.
We have not cleaned them in any fashion - that's up to you, should you choose to do so! Many of them are patinaed and look even better (we think) than they might have as new.
The cross measures 2-1/2 inches tall (including the hanging loop) and about 1-1/2 inch from side to side. Each cross arrives with a rattail cord or ribbon (most are black; some have faded) and with a case so that the choir member might carry it along to the performance safely.

Modern Milagro Quetzalcoatl Charm in Sterling Silver Signed by the Artist
Known as the feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl has been revered in Mesoamerican cultures since the 5th century. The Aztec culture seems to mention Quetzalcoatl more than others and relates him to the gods of the wind and dawn. He is also associated with merchants, artisans, learning and knowledge. He is quite striking and might appear scary to some, but as a protector to others.
The charm is signed by the artist, but is not hallmarked as sterling silver, although we were told that it was when we purchased them.
Each charm is hand finished and measures 1 inch wide by 7/8 inch high. This is a flat charm which almost makes it appear as a petroglyph of sorts. This might be facing either way.

Mini Golden Miraculous Medal
This lovely Miraculous Medal features the Blessed Mother Mary. The famous miraculous medal is usually associated with infants as Saint Catherine Labouré created the medal after she awoke on the night of July 18, 1830, hearing the voice of a child. She was called by the child to the chapel in Paris where she was a nun. The Blessed Virgin Mary gave her a mission to go forward and spread the word of God and she was blessed with God's grace to do so. The image of Mary that is found on the Miraculous Medal is also called Our Lady of Grace.
Because many people who have worn the medal featuring Our Lady of Grace have enjoyed healing and transformation - and even conversion, the medal has come to be known as The Miraculous Medal.
This miniature golden version measures only 1/2 inch high by 5/16 inch wide and is gold plated metal.
Not for children.

Small Silver-Plated Saint Francis of Assisi Icon
More Shrines & Shrine Supplies
More Milagros, Amulets & Icons
We usually are not attracted to all metal icons, but this St Francis Icon is the exception. We are particularly enamoured with this image of the holy saint and this small, beautiful silver-plated icon is set upon a wooden base.
The silver-plated top is accented with incredible ornate 24-karat gold plate and other silver accents in highly detailed repoussée. The metal coverings on the wood base are also known as rizas. The riza uses a scrolled floral pattern as a frame to accent St. Francis' portrait and covers the less important areas of the icon.
The black velvet backing protects your table or wall. There is a circular self-hook on the back that will allow you to add it to your shrine or wall. It measures 2 inches wide by 2-1/4 inches long by not quite 1/2 inch thick.

Reversible St Gerard Majella & Our Lady of Perpetual Help Medal
More Medals, Amulets and Milagros
More Babies
Mother's Day
Saint Gerard Majella was the son of a tailor in Italy. He was quite devout but suffered bad health and was not able to become a Capuchin monk as he wished. He later became a Redemptor monk and was falsely accused of impregnating a woman, who later recanted and repented. Because of this, Saint Gerard has become well known as the protector and patron of pregnancies, expectant mothers, childbirth and motherhood. He has also been known as a an antecedent for the falsely accused.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a treasured representation of the Blessed Virgin Mary that has been associated with a Byzantine icon or image of the same name. There is some controversy about the original date of the image - ranging from the 13th through the 15th centuries. The actual icon is in Rome and has been there since the late 1400s.
This is a highly recognizable image of the Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus in her arms. Catholics have prayed to the Blessed Mother to intercede on their behalf, with her son, Jesus, for help. Perhaps the reason for the popularity of the image is Mary's gaze directly at the viewer, rather than down at her son, conveying her care for the world at large and individuals in particular.
This image is particularly special to us as it was our Grandmother's favorite. Although we never knew her, we have heard of her patience, kindness and open arms of love. And, this lovely medal features a very detailed image of Our Lady.
It measures 1 inch high (including the loop) by 1/2 inch wide. We're showing two medals so that you might see each side.

Small Hand Carved, Fired & Glazed Scarab Bead

More Beads
More Amulets, Milagros, Medals & Such
More Insects
This interesting little scarab beads are hand made in Egypt. Each is different, as they are hand carved out of soft steatite stone and then drilled. The next step has them kiln-fired and glazed. The nature of the production creates a matte finish that is quite gorgeous and earthy.
Part of an ancient tradition of wearing protective amulets, the scarab wearer is considered to be endowed by the qualities that the amulet represents. It is believed that that such scarabs will protect against evil forces and that good fortune will be on its way.
Beetles by nature are hard-working and persistent in their quest to continue their species. Such persistence is evident in rolling a dung-ball, from which new life would be born - and being guided by the light of the moon towards new life that sun brings with the dawn.
We think they'll be lovely as earrings or, certainly as an embellishment for any earth-inspired project.
Each bead measures approximately 3/8 inch long by 1/2 inch wide. The are 1/4 inch from base to top. The stringing hole is from head to tail (lengthwise).

Saint Lucy Medal
Saint Lucy, also known as Santa Lucia, was a rich, young Christian of Greek ancestry. Although Saint Lucy's mother arranged a marriage for her after her father's death, Saint Lucy prayed that she might devote her life to her religious convictions. Her potential bridegroom was pagan, and once he knew of his rejection, arranged that she be punished.
Part of this punishment was to tear out her eyes violently. Because of this terrible fate, St. Lucy has become the patron of those with eye problems, including the blind. After blinding her, her captors attempted to burn her at the stake and the fires were quelled, supposedly by Saint Lucy's devotion. She was later killed, but is said that her eyesight was restored, thus her patronage.

Tiny Saint Brigid's Cross Charm or Medal
More Medals, Milagros & Such
More Irish & St Patrick's Day
Saint Brigid, along with Saint Patrick, is one of the Patron Saints of Ireland. She is also patron to children whose parents are not married, dairy workers, fugitives, travelers, scholars and many more. St Brigid is also known as Brigid of Kildare, where the story of her cross came into being.
The cross of rushes is now made traditionally on February First (Lá Fhéile Bhríde) - her feast day.
Legend has it that a pagan was from nearby was dying and the Christians from his household sent for Brigid to talk to him of Jesus. This was not an easy task as the gentleman was raving mad with pain. The floor was spread with rushes to keep the room warm and clean - as was the custom in the Dark and Middle Ages.
St. Brigid wove some of the stems and wove them into a cross similar to the one replicated by our charm. Supposedly, the pagan was now able to understand the importance of Christianity and was baptized right before he died.
Our little charm measures only 1/2 inch high by 3/8 inch wide. The medal features the same detailed texture on both sides.

Saint Barbara is usually depicted with a chalice and sometimes with a sword. She is well known as a martyr of the 4th century. However, the Catholic Church could not substantiate her legend and she was removed as a saint in 1969. Despite this, she still has quite a following in the modern world as the patron saint and protector of the military and those who work with explosives. More Metaphysical Items
Talismanic seals such as this are authentic reproductions from the book which is some times called Moses' Magical Spirit-Art. According to tradition, each of the seals has a different magnificent power. Taken from the ancient Hebrew Holy Books (including the Talmud and the Kabala), these have been transformed and have been passed down through the ages. Even today many believers carry or use them with faith in their effectiveness to bring results by magical means.
The legend is given, although no claims of supernatural powers are made for the talisman. It is to be carried in purse or pocket as a secret possession.
This single seal is #417 The Seal of Long Life. It is said to protect the holder from misfortune and misery and promises a long life. It is traditional to burn a blue candle and to pray to the Trinity along with this seal. Please be careful and never leave a burning candle unattended. Be sure that the candle is in a holder so that the paper does not burn.
These are wonderful pieces to add to your sacred or magical artwork or shrine. The seal is printed in bright red dragon's blood ink on white parchment paper and it measures 3-3/4 inches by 2-3/4 inches.

Reclaimed Milagro Style Crow (or Dove)
More Crows & Blackbirds
More Recycled & Green Products
Fashioned from reclaimed metal, mostly old oil drums, these magnificent milagro-style crows seemed to be made just for us. Whether it be a dove or a crow, it matters not much, so we choose always to believe that black birds are crows, to protect our souls. Because of that, we choose to believe that they are miracles of nature and, for that reason, to us it is a milagro.
Each one has been hand cut, cleaned and hammered, then coated with sealant for protection. The crow measures just over 3-1/4 inches from beak to tail and just under 3-1/4 inches from bottommost tail feathers to highest wingtip. There is a hole for hanging like a milagro. And, if you cinch the nail tightly, you can change the position of the crow easily as though s/he is flying
Please allow for some variation in size, decoration and the placement of the hole for hanging. Created from recycled metals, the artisans have worked around the metal they've found to create their final products, so much depends on their working resources.

Reversible Sacred Heart and Infant of Prague Oxidized Medal
There are many stories that speak of the origins of the Infant of Prague. They all agree that the special statue given to the Carmelite order is a statue of the infant Jesus. Many carvings of such statues had been created throughout Europe over time.
The most likely history begins in 1628 when a small - about 19 inches tall - detailed, almost perfect statue of the Infant Jesus in wax was brought into Bohemia by a Spanish princess. She told them that, if they honored the statue, they would never be in need. The Carmelite novices voluntarily became poor and, as such, honored the statue of the Infant. When Emperor Ferdinand II (Hapsburg) heard of this, he arranged to send 2,000 Florins and a monthly stipend to support the order and their good works.
Once side of the medal features Jesus, the Infant of Prague, while the other side features the Sacred Heart surrounded by a crown of thorns. Our medal is made of silvery metal in Italy. Two medals are shown to illustrate front and back.

Saint Charles Borromeo (Patron of Those with Stomach Ailments) Oxidized Medal
More Italy
Saint Charles Borromeo is quite special to us as this was our parish when I was growing up in Donora, Pennsylvania. But at that time, I was unaware of his patronage.
Saint Charles was born in 1538 in the castle at Arona, Italy. The son of a rich Italian count and the sister of Pope Pius IV. When he was just 22, his uncle (the Pope) named him Secretary of State and made him a cardinal and administrator of the see of Milan. Three years later, he was ordained a pries, and consecrated as bishop of Milan.
Charles was amongst the kindest of men, setting a marvelous personal example and the Diocese of Milan became a model for the whole Church. He faithfully prayed and did penance, gave everything he owned to the poor, went into debt to feed the hungry, and set up altars in the streets to bring Mass to the ill.
He is recognized as the patron of those with stomach ailments because in 1571, the entire province suffered a terrible famine. Saint Charles worked with unceasingly to help the starving and those with stomach ills due to the food shortage.
Two medals are shown to illustrate each side. The back reads,

Saint Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes Oxidized Medal
More French
Saint Bernadette was the oldest of six children born to François and Louise Casterot. They were quite a poor family and hired Bernadette out as a servant when she was only 12 years old.
Right around the time of her First Communion (February 11, 1858), she had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In all, she enjoyed 18 visions of Mary. Our Lady of Lourdes led her to a spring of healing waters.
She began to live with the Holy Sisters of Nevers near the spring. There she learned to read and write as she worked diligently with the Sisters who cared for the sick and indigent. As Bernadette was unwell and poor, she fit right in. She became a Sister herself at the age of 22.
She died with a prayer for the Blessed Mother's aid and since the appearances of Our Lady to Bernadette in 1858, over 200 million people have visited the Shrine and Waters of Lourdes in hopes of healing.
Two medals are shown to illustrate each side.

Hand Made Saint George Badge with Relic - Patron of Riders, the cavalry & against skin disorders
More Milagros, Talismans, Relics & Such
We use the word relic as though everything were sacred. Alas, we guess that everything might be as we all exist in a world together from some kind of creation. Whether you be a believer in such holy items is not necessarily important. The brush with history and maybe with holiness seems to be just within our reach when we encounter a true relic.
The Catholic relic is a 4th class relic cloth. A tiny piece of cloth has touched a true relic.
The most sacred of relics are actual parts of the saint's body - perhaps a lock of hair. A secondary relic might be a personal item of the saint, such as clothing or a book or it might even be something that belonged to someone else that actually touched the holy person. These first and second class relics are not to be sold or given away. They are treasured by the churches and displayed for believers in secure areas.
Items like the tiny piece of cloth included in our relic badge (in our photo, the cloth is green) have touched a first or second class relic. It is appropriate to buy 3rd and 4th class relics and it is also considered a lovely gesture to offer one as a gift.
We're showing the front with a primitive image of Saint Augustine and a miniaturized view of the back of the same relic. The back reads:
Touched to Relic of St. George Pray for us.
The relic cloth has been glued to the back and the front and back are hand crochet together.
Saint George is known for his bravery and care for the lesser souls. For that reason he holds many patronages. He is represented as a knight on horseback and often carries a lance. He protects against leprosy and other ailments of the skin, against the plague and herpes. He is the patron of those who are chivalrous and brave, so he could easily be thought to care for the military as well.
Crochet thread may vary in color, as may the relic cloth itself.

It is important to tell those we love how much they mean to us as often as we might! This little gift packet will help you do just that.
Each package includes a sweet pin made of a silken ribbon and a milagro of a woman's countenance. Milagros, or Miracles, found in many areas of Latin America, are charms worn or posted on a church wall to petition the saints for help or protection. We've made it into a simple brooch with a bow, which may be worn or simply treasured. Hand Painted Antique Style Wooden Icon: Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Our Lady of Perpetual Help is one of the many titles given to the Blessed Virgin Mary. A Byzantine icon named Our Lady of Perpetual Help was created sometime between the 13th and 15th centuries (there has been much controversy over the exact date). The original icon has been in Rome since at least the late 15th century, but is truly in the style of an Icon of the Eastern Orthodox Church. She is known in the Orthodox iconography as the Theotokos of the Passion. Catholics have long revered this image as representative of the ability of Mary to intercede with their prayers to Jesus Christ, her son, pictured with her in the icon.
Included with te icon is a complete description of the image as well as a explanation of how icons, including this one are painted. The icon has been hand-painted in Greece with egg, tempura and gold leaf.
This icon arrives with a certificate of authenticity sealed onto the back of the wood. A stamp has been added as well as a wax seal from the artist. The certificate is in English, French, German and Spanish and reads:
This icon is hand made. It is a selected copy of an old Byzantine icon worked on canvas, old wood and set in a gold background.
This lovely icon was created to portray an antique style, which might include the creation of dents, use of rusted rings, dents in the icon itself, and a waxed overlay for protection. The results of these techniques should not be construed as a defect in the product, but rather a part of the design.

Saint Scholastica was the twin sister of Saint Benedict. The two were born to Italian nobility. Unfortunately, their mother died in childbirth. Saint Scholastica later became a nun. She and her brother met once a year
During their last annual meeting, St Scholastica had a premonition that this would be the last time they saw each other. According to St Gregory, a friend to them both, nightfall was approaching and Saint Benedict was leaving. His sister asked him to stay. He declined. She then began to cry, laid her head upon the table, and prayed that God would intercede and make him stay. Suddenly a great storm arose with violent rain, thunder and hailstones. Because of this, Benedict was forced to stay till the morning. Three days later, Saint Scholastic died and Saint Benedict saw her soul raise to the heavens, another miracle.

Copper Om Mani Padme Hum Bracelet
More Buddha
More Religious Jewelry, Milagros, Talismans & Amulets
Prayer Stone with the Same Inscription
Copper is a soft metal that is known as a catalyst for increasing mental alertness. Some believe that it fights against arthritis pain and supports the immune system. It is also known as a good conductor of energies from Higher Nature - perhaps that is where its healing reputation started.
It has been said that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained in the mantra inscribed on this wonderful cuff:
Om Mani Padme Hum
Because of that, it cannot really be translated into a simple phrase or sentence. This very special mantra frees us from the real world, so perhaps that is why there is no real translation, as it is the translation of everything.
We are happy to offer this symbol of peace as a bracelet to be worn by anyone at any time - to be reminded of the powerful mantra.

Large Handmade Santa Barbara Amulet (Amuleto de Santa Barbara)
More Shrine Items
More Amulets, Milagros & the Like
This large Mexican packet amulet is decorated with so very many meaningful items that it is hard to describe! The centerpiece is a printed portrait of Saint Barbara, the patron of so many (including mineworkers, milliners and firefighters). She is the protector against storms, lightening and guns and ammunition.
Also included are an amulet bag, Legitimo Polvo de Guaraya (powder of the guaraya berry), believed to protect against salaciousness and witchcraft. Additionally there painted seeds and a real full-size used herradura (horseshoe). The amulet is loaded with red and orange glitter and the horseshoe is tied on with red thread, to represent strength.
Saint Barbara is a protector of milliners, miners and the military, among others. Chuparrosas are thought to bring true and honest love to those near them, as well.
Each of these is 10 inches high by 8 inches wide and all are basically the same. The entire piece is covered with vinyl film and arrives with a hanging string.
There is a description on the back (in Spanish) regarding The Secret of the Virtuous Horseshoe. The horseshoe must be real and used and always faces downward. It might be covered in felt, rayon, silk or glitter, so that the original iron or metal is mostly not seen.
The legend is about an Asian Indian merchant who found hidden treasure and future wealth because he had a lucky horseshoe. Each work week, he hung his horseshoe in his shop in a protected area and recited the luck-invoking phrase
CITRUM NUEVE
each day when he arrived at work. On Friday, at the end the workday, he would remove his horseshoe to a protected place known to no other. It is believed that this practice afforded him the luxury of surpassing his competitors in business.
Combining the luck of the horseshoe with the protection of Saint Barbara, one can only imagine the powers that this amulet purports.
Now we cannot promise that this will work for you, but you never know what will happen if you believe!

As you can see from the illustration, it is not perfectly straight - this is due to the natural tendencies of the cording, giving the cross the same natural qualities as a wooden cross might have.

Modern Pewter Ankh Lovers Pendant

More Milagros, Amulets, Talismans & Medals
Although the Ankh symbol is widely recognized as Egyptian, its origins are hard to determine. Scholars have a hard time agreeing on the meaning. The Ankh is often considered the symbol of life.
Our pendant seems to represent such meaning with the image of a man and woman facing each other on the front of the cross as lovers with only a breath separating them.
The large bale is in the back of the cross and can accommodate a chain, cord or ribbon. This allows the pendant to hang nicely. The pendant measures 1-3/8 inch long by 7/8 inch wide.

Mini Sterling Silver Charm Featuring Our Lady of Carmel
This tiny little charm is the perfect addition to charm earrings, a nicho - particularly if made in our Nicho Necklace! The image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Christ Child is strikingly clear in this little 3/8 inch diameter charm.
Our lady of Mount Carmel was the inspiration for the Carmelite Order and is quite nearly always associated with the brown scapular, worn by many devoted Catholics. Mount Carmel is in the Holy Land and this devotion to Mary, or the Blessed Mother, was conceived during chivalric times in devotion to Jesus and his mother (around the late 12th or early 13th century).

Mini Sterling Silver Saint Jude Charm
St Jude Statue
Sterling Silver Guadalupe Charm
Saint Jude is the Patron Saint of lost or impossible causes. It is believed that this patronage has been derived from the confusion by many early Christians between Jude and Judas not understanding the difference in the names.
No one ever prayed for Jude's help, and devotion to him became something of a lost cause. Made famous by comedian Danny Thomas, St Jude has come to represent hope and much more than just lost causes. St Jude's Children's Research Hospital, created by Danny Thomas after his prayer was heard, provides treatment for children who suffer from catastrophic medical conditions, without regard to the family's ability to pay.
This tiny little charm is the perfect addition to charm earrings, a nicho - particularly if made in our Nicho Necklace! The image is strikingly clear in this little 3/8 inch diameter charm.

Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha - Patron of the Environment, Ecology & Loss of Parents
More Native American
Kateri, or Catherine, Tekakwitha was the daughter of a Christian Native American Algonquin woman who was captured by members of the Iroquois tribe. She was also married to a non-Christian Mohawk chief. She was orphaned at the age of four, during a smallpox epidemic - and that is why she is the patron of those who have lost her parents.
She survived smallpox, but was left with a scarred face and impaired eyesight. Kateri was converted and baptized in 1676 by Jesuit missionary, Father Jacques de Lambertville. Her relatives abused and exiled her because of her new faith, but this did not change her mind or sway her strength of conviction.
Three years later she escaped to the Christian Native American village of Sault-Sainte-Marie after surviving a grueling journey of 200 miles of wilderness. She then made vow of chastity.
Known for spirituality, miracles and her austere lifestyle, Kateri's grave became a pilgrimage site and place of miracles for Christian Native Americans and French colonists. She is the first Native American Indian to have been proposed for canonization as a saint.
This highly detailed three dimensional charm measures 3/4 inch high by 1/8 inch wide.

We were quite taken by this pendant as it is devout yet the image is subtle. The pendant measures around 1-3/4 inch including the bail.

Smashed Penny with the Ten commandments
Milagros, Talismans & Amulets
Coins like these have many names, but our favorite is smashed pennies, aka elongated pennies and pressed pennies. The first elongated penny was created for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus during 1892-1893. There are some who believe that there were such coins produced earlier, but the experts have singled this celebration as the beginning.
A smashed penny is is made by forcing a penny (or other coin) through two steel rollers. There is an engraving on one of the rollers (sometimes both sides). A crank (mechanical or electronic) forces the coin through the rollers and squeezes it with extreme pressure. This smashes the coin from round to ...you guessed it...elongated. The pressure pushes the engraving into the penny at the same time it is smashing it.
We've been collecting these since we were children, and now our grandchildren collect them, too. These wonderful pennies feature the entire 10 Commandments - Can you imagine? The detail is amazing and you can read the entire list! These were made from shiny pre-1983 pennies, so there is a higher copper content than today's pennies.
Because they are smashed in the process of impressing the commandments, they are super thin, yet sturdy. The new oval shape measures about 1-5/16 long and about 13/16 wide. This makes a wonderful keepsake for your wallet or pocket. And, it's a lovely little token to give a friend, use in a shrine or even make into a necklace.

What is known is her devotion to Jesus and her ministry to spread the word after Jesus' death.

Vintage Carded Medal Featuring St Joseph & a Guardian Angel
We were so fortunate to find these lovely carded medals from the mid-20th century. We love how particularly important it once was to make things more special and beautiful with an extra touch such as these little cards.

Saint Dismas Medal - Patron Saint of Prisoners & Funeral Directors
Saint Dismas was the Good Thief who was crucified with Jesus. Dismas rebuked the other thief crucified at the same time (Gestas). And, Dismas asked for Christ's blessing. There is also an old Arabic legend that tells the story of the Holy Family running to Egypt for safety. During their journey, they were accosted by a band of thieves, including the two who would be later crucified with Jesus - Dismas and Gestas. The story tells that Dismas realized that there was something special about the Holy Family and convinced the accompanying highwaymen to leave the family alone.
Our medal is made of silvery metal in Italy. On the back it reads,
Two medals are shown to illustrate the front and back.
Saint Monica Medal - Patron of Homemakers, Alcoholics, difficult marriages and Protector of the Abused
More Compassion

More Divorce
Saint Monica was born in 322 AD and raised in a Christian family. Unfortunately, as was tradition in those times, she was given away in marriage by her parents. Unfortunately, her family did not choose well for her. She was married to a pagan named Patricius, who was quite ill-tempered and certainly adulterous.
St. Monica was the mother of two, one of whom is Saint Augustine. She prayed constantly for her husband and her wayward son, Augustine, who lived quite a wild life, according to his writings, before his conversion. Her prayers were answered for them both, as her Patricius converted on his deathbed.

Sweet Kissing (Glykopfilousa) Pendant
More Medals and Amulets
Long represented together are Mary, the Blessed Mother of Jesus, and Jesus himself as a baby. This stunning version is based on a traditional Greek icon thought to be of the 15th century. There have been many other representations of the original icon, including this one, but the image of Mother and Child remain the same.
This is not a happy Jesus and Mary, but rather represents the sadness that is to come in the Child's life and, it is almost as though his Mother knows what is to be. The Christ Child looks to his Mother for comfort. This is evident in the manner in which the Child's entire body is facing Mary, not just the head. She, in return, caresses her Son, protecting him from his future.
This lovely pendant is made of bright silver metal and a stunningly colored resin image. The entire piece measures 1-3/4 inch high (including the bail) by 1-3/16 inch wide. The bail is large enough to accommodate a leather or ribbon as well as a chain.
Price: $8.70 each
Large Tin Sacred Hand (heart in Hand) Milagro or Ex Voto
We are particularly fond of this large tin milagro or ex voto because the image traverses many cultures.
Having been produced in Mexico, it is traditionally called a Sacred Hand (La Mano Sagrada). The sacred image is also found in Hindu symbolism.
The Shakers of the Northeastern United States, use a similar image to represent their motto: Hands to work, hearts to God. The Oddfellows, a service organization with origins in the United Kingdom, include the same image with some additional symbols. And the Amish communities also use the symbol.
Each of our milagros is hand made of tin: cut and pressed in the traditional manner. So, please allow for slight variation. Each one measures (including the hanging loop) 6-1/4 inches high by 4-1/8 inches wide.

Tiny Silvery Byzantine Crucifix
The Eastern Orthodox cross is also know as the Byzantine cross. There are many interpretations of the the shape of the cross. The standard cross or crucifix is the base for the design.
At the bottom is a slanted crossbar, often said to be the foot rest of Jesus on the cross and, when Jesus took his last breath, the nail slipped and the bar became slanted. Another interpretation tells us that the cross is slanted representing the repentant and unrepentant thieves who were crucified at the same time. The crossbar usually slants down from the viewer's left.
The set of double straight crossbars are said to represent the death and resurrection of Jesus. The longer, more common bar being death, the shorter bar, closer to heaven representing life.
This tiny cross measures 1 inch from hanging hole to bottom and 1/2 inch from side to side. A jump ring is included for your convenience.
The front of the crucifix shows Jesus traditionally. On the back, it reads,

Our Lady of Czestochowa Oxidized Silvery Medal
Originating in the 15 century, the Black Madonna is most often associated with the portrait found in Czestochowa, Poland. Some say that the extraordinary power of the Black Madonna is a strength that is not expressed in portraits of the lighter-skinned Mary, who is most often associated with purity and obedience. While the Madonna is still the Mother of Jesus, the diverse representations are not only images of her likeness, but symbolic of her spirit as well. Others suggest that there is a closer connection between the Czestochowa and the archetypal Earth Mother of many cultures, who intercedes for fertility and transcends both life and death.
This lovely modern pewter (silvery metal) medal is just about 1 inch long and 5/8 inch wide. On one sized is the likeness of Our Lady of Czestochowa holding the baby Jesus. The other side features the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
This medal is also lovely as an addition to your shrine or artwork, especially with an Eastern European theme!

This ex voto is new, made of tin, and measures 1-3/4 inches wide by 4-1/2 inches high. There is a hole at the top for hanging. This lovely piece is framed with a slight filigree border.

Antiqued Silver Hamsa Hand Charm or Medal
The Hamsa Hand, Hamish Hand or Hand of Fatima is a popular amulet in the Middle East and in Africa. It has become quite popular, too, in the Western World. This image is historically associated with cultures as far back as the Phoenicians. It is known to cross cultures and religions.
Although many Hamsa Hands feature an evil eye center, ours features a 5-pinted star and a moon. It measures 1-1/16 inch high by 3/4 inch wide (at the thumbs).

Vintage Hand Embroidered Scapular of Saint Expedito
This vintage devotional scapular features a black and white printed image of Saint Expedito (aka, Saint Expedite, Saint Expeditus and Saint Espedito). There is some controversy about the dear St Expeditus. There are statues of him around the world as well as medals and honorariums. It is unclear as to whether his name led to expediting matters, or if the word came first. In any case, he has become known as the Patron Saint of those needing to do things quickly and deliver things on time.
Although not printed or sewn anywhere on the piece, it is believed that a scapular helps protect the soul of the wearer and it is usually accompanied by the invocation:
Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.
The picture has been protected by glass and is then framed with brown felt and hand embroidered. The backing piece is reinforced felt that has been hand sewn. Perhaps there is a devotional inside - but we did not open the scapulars to determine this. The hanging string is just that - cotton string or cord.
The brown pieces are approximately 1 inch long by 15/16 inch wide, but vary slightly as these all hand made.

He is venerated today by many and his followers, fidencitos, make pilgrimages to his town twice yearly to celebrate his healing and to hope for miracles. Some of the fidencitos go into trance-like states, believed to become El Niño and are transferred his healing powers for that short while.

Reversible Saint Patrick & Saint Bridget Medal
More Travel & Transportation
More Saint Patrick and Things of Ireland
Saint Patrick was actually born on the British mainland and then kidnapped and shipped to Ireland as a slave, working in the mountains as a shepherd. Saint Patrick is often associated with driving the snakes from Ireland. While it is true that there are no snakes in Ireland, this may be more mythical, representing his effort in converting the Irish.
Saint Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland and of many individual churches and dioceses throughout the United States. He is patron to those in fear of snakes (ophidiophobics), those who have been bitten by snakes, and of excluded people, and of engineers.
Saint Bridget (aka, St. Brigid) was a great lover of the poor. She was born to a Lord of Ireland, who arranged a marriage for her. Determined to create a life of devotion to God, she pled her case to the bishop who arranged for her to take her vows quickly. She was quite beautiful and it is said that she denounced her beauty and prayed to have it taken from her so that no man would be attracted to her. Her prayers were answered until her vows were taken - and then she re-gained her beauty. Some say that Saint Patrick himself was the bishop who heard her final vow.
Saint Bridget is that Patron Saint of Travelers as she set up so many convents throughout Ireland despite the terrible conditions of the 5th and 6th centuries when she live. She is also patron to babies, fugitives and sailors.
Our lovely medal is made of silvery metal in Italy.

Silvery Medal featuring La Monserrat (Black Madonna)
The Virgin of Montserrat is a statue of the Virgin Mary and infant Christ venerated at the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery in the Montserrat mountain in Catalonia, Spain. She is a black Madonna. And for that reason, she is often called La Moreneta ("The little dark-skinned one"). Legend has it that she was carved in Jerusalem in the very early days of the Catholic Church, but it is really from the late 12th century as it is carved in the Romanesque style. It is believed that the Benedictine monks built their monastery around the statue, rather than move it. It is surrounded by an alter of gold and many make pilgrimage to pay homage to La Monserrat.

Silvery Saint Charbel Medal - The Miracle Saint
Saint Charbel (Youssef Antoun Makhlouf) is the first canonized saint from the Middle East. He is known as the Saint of Miracles. Saint Charbel was born to a poor family in Lebanon and drawn to the monastic holy life as a child, following his uncles. Later ordained a priest, he was known as a a holy and comforting soul.
He was struck by an illness when offering Mass on December 16, 1898, and died on Christmas Eve of the same year. Several months after his burial, dazzling bright lights surrounded his grave. His corpse secreted sweat and blood in the grave. Pilgrims from around the world traveled to petition the saint's intercession and were blessed with recovery and spiritual grace.
In 1925, Charbel was proposed for beatification and canonization. His grave was opened and his body appeared as though he had only died that day. This was acknowledged by theologians and physicians alike. After this, the number of pilgrims (of all religions) increased, as did the miracles of healing
Saint Charbel is beloved by many because of he return to faith and the reviving of the virtues of the soul that were brought about simply by his life and death. He is known for so many miracles, including the expulsion of grasshoppers, oil lamps burning and, of course, the healing of the souls and bodies of many patrons. A chapel in Mexico City honors a statue of Saint Charbel. There is a pole filled with ribbons tied by supplicants asking for intersession.

Silvery Saint Genesius Medal - Patron of Actors, Comedians and more
Saint Genesius was a Roman actor who performed during the time of Emperor Diocletian in the third century. During a performance, he was playing a Christian who was about to be baptized - this was a farce and meant to be a satire of the Christian sacrament. During the performance, Genesius was converted to Christianity when he saw angels surrounding him. This, of course, enraged the emperor and Genesius was eventually beheaded for his faith. This is his story, which may well be legend, but he was canonized and is now the patron saint of actors, comedians, dancers, musicians, lawyers, torture victims and attorneys, among others.

Sterling Silver Faiths of the World Bracelet
Representing the Faiths of the World and the wearer's belief that diversity strengthens our humanity rather than divides us, our wonderful sterling silver bracelet should bring positive energy to anyone who wears it. Let's hope that it also spreads peace through understanding and tolerance.
The links represent world religions by symbol:
SIKH - The Khanda Emblem symbolizes the four pillars of Sikh belief, represented by symbolic weapons. In the center is the double-edged sword (Khanda), representing knowledge of divinity and the creative power of God. Surrounding this is a circular ring (Chakkar), symbolizing the unity of God. Chakkar and Chakra are derived from the same root. And, on either side, crossed kirpans (Piri & Miri), symbolizing spiritual and temporal power in balance.
JUDAISM - The Star of David is the most recognizable modern emblem of the Jewish religion. Legend has it that the image was used by King David of the Bible as his shield. The association with Judaism did not come until the middle ages. In Kabbalistic tradition, the hexagram symbolizes the six directions of space: the divine union of male and female energy, and the four elements.
CHRISTIANITY - The Cross, though generally representative of the Christian religions, has been a religious symbol for thousands of years. Because it was originally thought to be a pagan symbol, it was not the first representation of Christian faith. The most well known cross is the Latin cross, representing the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. When it is pictured with the image of Christ upon it, it is called a crucifix. A true Latin cross, when folded, creates a cube, an ancient symbol of earthly authority.
ISLAM - The Star and Crescent, is recognized as the symbol of the Islamic faith, but is not accepted by all Muslims. This is an ancient symbol, seen as early as 200 BC. There is no mention of this symbol in the Koran.
HINDUISM - The Omkar, or Om Symbol derives from the Sanskrit. Om (ohm) is considered the primordial sound by which the earth was created, symbolizing the unfolding. It symbolizes unfolding, growth and expansion. Omkar represents the Om and its four parts represent the four states of human awareness: the material state (ordinary waking), the state of deep sleep, the dream state and the awakened state (absolute conscience). Many eastern religions celebrate the Om.
BUDDHISM - The Dharma Wheel, also known as the dharmachakra, is Buddhist symbol that originates in the Hindu. The surrounding circle symbolizes the completeness of the Dharma. Its eight spokes represent the eight tenets of Buddhist belief that lead to enlightenment: right faith, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right endeavor, right mindfulness and right meditation. Generally circular symbols represent continuity and eternal rebirth, rather the Dharma Wheel represents the ability to overcome obstacles.
This stunning bracelet is wrought in sterling silver and arrives in a special anti-tarnish pouch.

Saints Amulet Vial
Similar to many protection packages, these short vials contain several little dolls that represent the saints. The cap is sealed with colorful plasticized material (usually red or green) so your amulet stays intact. The bottle itself is made of glass, and, although strong, is breakable. Vials vary slightly in size but are approximately 4 cm high (about 1-5/8 inches).
Each bottle is different and some of the bottles may contain additional items, such as seeds, charms and the like as a matter of protection. The saints are not identified so that you can create your own protection with them, choosing your own Patron Saints for you prayers. Such little vials are wonderful in a nicho or as a part of a shrine.

St Rock (aka St Roch) - Patron Saint of Dogs & More - Charm or Medal
More Get Well Wishes
This lovely medal is just about 1 inch long and 5/8 inch long. St Roch (also known as St Rock, St Rocco and St Roque) was a French nobleman who was known for tending to the sick and the poor. He was able to miraculously cure so very many, but, alas contracted the plague himself. Not wanting to infect anyone else, he set off to the forest to die.
He was befriended by a dog who stole scraps of food from the family table and fed them to St Rock in the forest. He was able to recover with thanks to the dog, so his image generally shows a dog by his side. St Rock was falsely accused for being spy and spent the rest of his life in jail. He was tended to by an angel while imprisoned.
St Rock is the patron of those who are sick with the plague, cholera and other such afflictions, as well as skin and knee problems. His other patronages include the protection of falsely accused people and invalids.
He is best known as the beloved patron saint of dogs, falsely accused people and invalids.
On the back the medal reads: Pray for Us with a wildflower beside the wording.
We're showing two medals to illustrate the front and back.
