Tinsmithing in Mexico dates back to Spanish colonial days. SilverCrow's nichos are all made in Mexico of tin and have either a burnished, brushed or aged finish. Wooden nichos are also part of the Latin Heritage. Many of the Dia de los Muertos Offrendas (Day of the Dead Altars) include wooden nichos - almost like a diorama of loved ones captured in a special moment - in the kitchen, at the barbershop, at a favorite outdoor area, etc.

Traditionally, nichos are used as shrines for favorite or patron saints or other honored religious figures. Nichos are also typically used to protect special treasures or pictures of loved ones. The niche is a 3-dimensional recessed shadow-box in the center of the nicho, that is protected by a hinged glass door.

Each of SilverCrow's nichos is hand-made with care and awaits your treasures. So, no two of the nichos are alike. Make them even more distinctive by accenting the glass doors with painted motifs or small stickers and adding your treasures and mementos inside.

Large Hand-Painted Brick Red Nouveau-Style Nicho

Storing and displaying your mementos, precious slips of paper and tin photos in a box has transitioned into art - especially when you display your life souvenirs in such a deftly created folk-art nicho such as this.

The detail inside the niche door is absolutely striking, with tiny scallops around the glass perimeter painted in a deep, deep purple that is almost black, made from actual metal attached to the inner side of the door. This inner frame is oval shaped, creating an even deeper look than the true dimensions.

How wonderfully this styling will highlight the contents of the niche. The nicho door swings out easily for you to add your memories, some Santos and prayers and it closes with the traditional spiral.

The brick red paint is evocative of the earth and the nouveau styling is at once modern and old-fashioned. The detail work highlights the hand embossed and cut metalwork nicely. There is a shabby-chic look to this style, but we think it truly accents the piece, making it look much older than it is.

The entire piece measures just over 13-1/2 inches high by 6-7/8 inches wide. The niche is almost 3/4 inch deep and measures approximately 6 by 3 inches. The oval cutwork inside the glass creates a viewing area of 2-3/8 by 5-/18. Of course, because these are handmade, each will vary slightly from the illustration, but not by very much at all.

This delightful little nicho would be perfect for a memory box. The star-like rays that emanate from the top give it a happy, fireworks appeal. The smooth wings on either side cross easily from modern to vintage in style.

The tiny door is simple and held by the rolled tin closure that is typical of the traditional nichos. It is traditional and modern at once. You'll certainly be inclined to preserve your treasures from special moments in it. The entire piece measures about 3-3/4 by 3-3/4 inches and features a glass-covered niche that measures 2-3/8 inches high by 1-5/8 inch wide and is between 1/4 and 1/2 inch deep. This charming traditional nicho is very special to us. Although we are not really sure what type of birds they are, we like to think that they are crows or ravens that are perched atop the niche. The two birds are seemingly in flight and are holding tight onto the heart between them.

The shadow box opens from the front with a traditional curled closure. This would be just right as wedding or anniversary present - just add the couple's picture to the inside of the door of the niche. Of course, the niche's depth allows for additional items to be added - perhaps a miniaturized version of their wedding invitation, a small candle or milagros. We also like it for a baptism or other baby memory box as the parents hold their true heart.

The entire piece measures 8-1/4 inches high by a touch over 7 inches wide. The niche is 3-1/4 inches high by 2-1/4 inches wide and just about 1/2 inch deep. Each of these wonderful pieces is created by hand by a traditional artisan with centuries of tradition behind the artist. Our little star nicho features 6 points that each end with a decorative ball. It's simple lines belie the detail in the handwork on it. The rays emanating from the center actually send focus back to the contents of the niche behind the glass window. The door is latched by the traditional tin spiral. The interpretations for such a statement visit each end of the spectrum. What makes the angels suffer so? Is there hell on earth, or do the angels understand so much better what heaven is for having seen hell? Interpret as you will, the message is certainly thought provoking at the very least. Perhaps it is a reminder to assess our own goodness and evil.

The nicho itself is hand made tin, and then it is hand painted with brightly-colored details by traditional artists at the famed Cielito Lindo Studios in México. If you just want to frame a meaningful quotation, or the picture of your beloved, you might not want to use a traditional nicho. Because this lovely tin piece features a shallow area for your additions, this might be just the perfect nicho frame for you. The glove shape represents protection and concern - as though you are holding your memory in your hand. And the heart window expresses the love with which you treasure what is inside.

A self-loop on the back will help hang this lovely frame on your wall or you might even choose to add it to a larger shrine. The tinwork is very lovely and deeply embossed for a special look. This gorgeous nicho has been created by the famed Estudio Cielito Lindo in Mexico. It is loaded with detail and ready for you to place in a sacred space of your own. Or, you might choose to embellish it a bit yourself before placing it.

Studded with milagros (which may vary from the picture), each of these features a portrait of Our Lady of Guadalupe honored by an altar inside the niche. You can remove the picture or cover it with one of your own if you so choose. There is also room inside the niche to add some mementos and holy pieces of your own. The niche measures 6 inches high by 3-1/3 inches wide and about 3/4 inch deep. The niche door is glass and closes traditionally.

We always love to get new style nichos for creating treasure boxes, dream boxes, shrines, memory frames and all kinds of things. This versatile nicho is quite becoming. At first it seems a bit Victorian with its scalloped edges around the diamond. At closer inspection, you'll find an evil eye debossed right atop the niche. This allows for special protection of your artwork, memorabilia or souvenirs inside.

From top point to bottom, the nicho measures 6-1/2 inches. From side point to side point, 5-1/2 inches. There is an outlining square around the triangle, creating additional dimension. The inner niche features a glass door that is latched traditionally with a coiled metal column. The niche measures 2-3/4 inches high by 2 inches wide and is about 1/2 inch deep.

Tiny Traditional Nicho

Sometimes the larger nichos are just too big - especially if you want to add to an assemblage or other mixed-media artwork. And, if you are partial to larger jewelry pieces, you might even consider this little nicho for a pendant or a pin.

This traditional nicho is really more like a little frame. The glass window is rectangular and holds a picture about 7/8 inch wide by about 3/4 inch high. But, with some patience, other mementos can be added in the slot, similar to a standard-sized nicho.

You can paint, decorate or collage the frame/nicho, but it is quite elegant all on it's own. There is a antiqued copper patina that has been lightly lacquered for effect. The opening is in the back - just flip up the little metal closure. There is even a self-hanger loop on the back, so that you can adapt it easily for a pendant, if you like.

This hand-crafted work of art has been individually made by a Mexican artisan the tradition of years of tinwork. Please allow for the variation that handwork promises. Each piece measures about 2-1/8 inches high by 2-5/8 inches wide.

This fantastic little nicho measures just 1-11/16 inch high and 1-14 inch wide. The glass measures 1 inch by 5/8 inch. Just slide your artwork behind the glass for a very special piece. This lovely piece is made of Alpaca silver (also known as German silver). It is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc (and contains little or no true silver). Just like our Bird Heart Nicho, this traditional nicho is very special to us. Although we are not really sure what type of birds they are, we like to think that they are crows or ravens that are perched on either side of the traditional shrine window, which opens from the front.

Although there is a cross at the top, a pair of tin snips or hefty scissors will cut it off to remove the religious aspect of this little shrine.

This nicho measures 7-3/4 from bird from bird. From the top to the bottom it measures 7 inches. The niche is 3-1/2 inches high by 2-1/2 inches. It is about 3/4 inch deep

This simple nicho has been made in the likeness of the man in the moon. Facing either direction (we cannot be sure which ones we will receive in an order), it is fashioned in the liso style - simple and smooth, allowing you to add your own decoration or leave it simply as is for a dramatic appearance.

The shadow box, or niche, opens in the front with the traditional curled metal closure. You might add a picture or some mementos. But, please don't let the traditional use limit your imagination! It is hard to describe these wonderful Mexican Colonial Style Nichos or Frames as anything other than stunning. They are simply made of rough wood in the colonial style. Atop each one is a concha that has been accented with traditional Mexican folk-art painting to accent the shape.

The frame is hand-crafted by Mexican Artisans in the tradition of the ages old craft of woodworking and hand painting. These wonderful frames are created from native wood then hand painted. No two are alike although they are quite similar as you can see in our illustrated examples. The colors are deep earth tones (typical to the colonial style), such as eggplant, rust, mottled green, golden and darkened eggshell.

Each frame measures 15 inches high (including the decorative concha at the top) and 8 inches wide. The recessed niche can hold a small Santo or saint statue, a photograph or portrait of a loved one, or can house your mementos and special keepsakes. You might also consider adding a mirror inside as a backing.

The inside niche measures 11 inches high by about 5-1/2 inches wide and is 2 inches deep. The inner niche remains open, allowing you to change your display easily. This is the traditional colonial style.

We have only a few of these and each is different, making yours unique. The colors are all similar and compliment each other. These are truly a special find and we are no longer able to acquire these.

This truly elegant nicho will display a larger santo or statue nicely. Because of the amazing detail, it will be simply beautifully with just such an addition. Of course, it is quite appropriate to add additional accoutrements such as milagros, charms, photos or whatever you choose.

The nicho measures from 23 inches top to bottom. It is 12-1/2 inches from side to side. The niches is 13-1/4 inches high, 9-1/4 wide and 4 inches deep. The rounded base adds an additional depth of 4- 1/2 inches (so total depth is about 8-1/4 inches).

You can hang it by the loop on the back of the niche, or you might even want to recess it into your wall for a very special effect.

Cielito Lindo Estudio is one of the premier Mexican folk art studios in San Miguel de Allende. Each nicho has been hand forged and hand adorned and painted with the electric colors that are part of Mexico's heritage. This traditional 3-window nicho represents an epiphany of sorts. Each section is a window to the soul of the artist or owner. The first window features a hand-made clay dark angel, a devil with black wings, standing amidst the fires below, and reads:

The second window simply surrounds a mirror, framed by calla lilies and toped with an image of the evil eye protector. It reads:

The shadow box opens in the front with the traditional curled metal closure. You might add a picture like the one in our sample, but, please don't let the traditional use limit your imagination! Of course, the niche's depth allows for additional items to be added - perhaps a miniaturized version of a birth certificate, a small candle or milagros.

Our flaming corazón nicho is really more like a little frame. The glass window is heart shaped and holds a picture about 1 inch overall. But, with some patience, other mementos can be added in the slot, similar to a standard-sized nicho.

We are absolutely delighted to present this beautiful milagro nicho. The glass is painted with the sentiment, in Spanish:

The entire piece is hand painted and decorated, then loaded with an assortment milagros, including a large Sacred Heart framing a little mirror. You can slip a picture or photo inside the frame for a special remembrance or gift.

The entire nicho measures about 9 inches tall by about 7-3/4 inches wide. You can open the glass covering over the niche and add some of your own treasures and keepsakes.

Each of these is made by hand by the famed Cielito Lindo Studios. So, you can rest assured that yours will be similar, but completely unique as each is made and painted by hand. The milagros are also hand selected and added by the artisan, so the selection and placement of the milagros may differ from nicho to Nicho.

This primitive style locket has been hand made of silver and oxidized. Made by traditional Mexican artisans, it measures 2-3/4 inches long by about 1-3/4 inch wide. The heart-shaped locket opening is in the center and measures about 1 by 1 inch. The door is about 1/4 inch deep, so you might add some treasures in the door as well as the locket face.

This large pendant has a self loop on the back and would be just right on a leather cord. Because of its size, you might want to use it in our artwork, adding it to a nicho or treasure box, too!

Nouveau Nicho

What a different look, we thought, when we discovered this special nicho. The color is a bit darker than our other nichos and the detail is amazing! The flowers around the face reminded us of Art Nouveau creations, but, rest assured this is truly a traditional Latin nicho. Our Nouveau Nicho is made with the same attention to detail and with the age-old tradition of tinsmithing in Mexico.

It measures about 6-1/2 inches high by 4 inches wide, and boasts a deeper niche (for more remembrances!) at almost 15/16 inch deep.

The glass niche door closes with the traditional spiral slide fashioned of tin. Each is hand made, so there will be individual differences. Please let us choose one for you.

Church Nicho with Three Crossed Spires

The three crosses atop this nicho make it perfect for a Christian shrine. However, if you wish, they can easily be removed with tin snips or heavy duty shears for a more secular look. The elegant punch and other tin work around the points and the perimeter of the piece make it ever so much more special. This nicho measures about 7-1/2 inches tall by about 4 inches wide. The nicho is 5/8 inch deep and measures 1-1/2 inch wide by 2-1/4 inch high.

The stunning craftsmanship is detailed and differs slightly among the pieces, as each is hand made. Allow for variation, but rest assured each is as special as the next.

Wooden Nicho Shrine with Concha

Embellishment Kit for Creating Your Own Shrine

We were so excited when we received these! They were made especially for SilverCrow.

Our Wooden Nicho can be used as a shrine or shadowbox - perfect for a diorama or special memory box.

It is free standing (see the side view) - but easily adapts to hanging if you add a picture hanger to the back.

The shadowbox portion is about 5-1/4 inches wide by about 7 inches high. The niche is approximately 1-1/2 inches deep and about 3-1/2 inches high by 2-1/4 inches wide. The concha (curved part on top) measures about 2-1/4 high inches by 4 inches wide. All of these measurements are approximate as each is hand made from recycled Mexican fruit crates (rejas) and occasionally, of new wood.

In the sample on the right, the artist has scored (with a nail) the angles between the concha scallops to define the image a bit better. This works easily because of the nature of the recycled wood.

SilverCrow's Wood Nicho is much the same as the traditional ones used for shrines in Mexico and the other Latin Nations of the Americas.

The wood is rough when you receive it, so you'll want to sand it a bit before working with it or you might get a splinter.

Retablo Cross of Lamentation

After Christ's death on the cross, the cross itself came to be venerated as one of the most important Christian symbols. Alejandro Chávez shows an empty cross, graced with a portrait of Jesus. Ladders reach to beams where ofrendas (offerings) have been placed. Figures in traditional Andean dress kneel below the cross, their eyes lifted in devout prayer.

Known as a retablo, this traditional diorama is housed in a colorful chest crafted of wood and painted. Chávez carefully models each figure from ceramic plaster and paints them by hand; the retablo receives an antique finish. So, please allow for slight variation.

The Cross of Lamentation resembles the Curanderos Cross so often seen in Mexico.

Much like our Wooden Altar Nicho, this little altar arrives unfinished. This simpler altar has more structured sides. The base altar measures 3-5/8 inches high by 4 inches wide and 7/8 inch deep.

Our sample was painted with sample wall paints and regular craft acrylic paints and then embellished. It features our Mini Guadalupe Statue, New Milagros (available in packages of 5 to 100), a Mini Saint Jude Statuette, our pewter Saint Christopher Pocket Statue, our Golden Guadalupe Medal, one of our Raku Hands and our Red Glass Rosary Chain by the Inch.

Flying Corazón nicho

At a bit over 6 inches, the highly detailed Flying Heart Nicho is a masterpiece. It has so very many special attributes including the superbly crafted wings - three on either side and the rounded cross atop the heart accented by the flame behind it.

The niche glass is flush with the front of the heart - quite different than the usual doors that open from the front. The door is actually the sold back of the heart. The latch is an especially strong wire that slips through two loops.

The new niche style opens a whole new world of planning your contents - working from front to back.

RESPLENDOR Nicho with Flowers

This is a larger version of our flower nicho. Delicate flowers adorn the niche of this nicho and the top is quite traditional. There is quite a bit of work in cutting and forming this particular little tin windowed shadowbox!

Each measures about 7 inches high, but there is some variation. The decoration on each is slightly different as well as every one is hand made and decorated. The niche is about 1/2 inch deep and the glass window door closes with the traditional rolled tin.

This gorgeous nicho was designed by our supplier and hand painted by Wendel Martinez. His goal was to make his artwork special and individual while still having the appearance of antique or vintage artwork.

Each nicho, while similar, is hand painted with painstaking attention to detail - and, the images are hand painted originals, based on the Mexican Loteria. El Musico carries his guitar and his music. What a wonderful gift for the musician in your life (especially if it's you!).

The artisanship is wonderful on this lovely piece. It measures about 2 inches from top to bottom and about an inch wide. The niche is covered with glass. It is ready for your changeable photo or artwork to be slipped in from the top.

Although it arrives on a 26-inch velvet cord with contrasting velvety poms at each end, you may consider using your own chain or beaded necklace. Or, simply tie the cord for a truly different look!
