Bark Paper - 4 Assorted Sheets

This is the original paper of the Western Hemisphere! And, it is still made today just as it was over 700 years ago.

For hundreds of years, the Otomi Indians harvested the  bark of  naturally fallen fig and mulberry trees. They then washed it in the streams and then boil the bark in lime water. Then, the Indians beat the damp, pliable fibers and lay them out in the sun to dry.

This beautiful, primitive paper has an unsurpassed texture. You can certainly use it to make and bind books and for drawing, painting, and collage. It is especially striking when painted with opaque paints, such as gouache.

SilverCrow is offering you a set of 4 sheets, each approximately 6 inches by 8 inches. Pictured is a sample package, however, the colors in the packages vary as do the textures, as the paper is handmade.

Papyrus

A 6” x 8” piece of reed paper, produced in Egypt just as it has been for thousands of years. Each sheet has its individual characteristics and colorings as papyrus is made with natural materials. Irregular edges identify this as the real thing!

Traditional Parchment

The original paper! This is natural tanned cowhide (6-inch square) or goathide (4 inches by 6 inches) that is ready for your artwork. One side is rough-hewn; the other, smooth. Each piece is accompanied by a smaller sampler piece that you can use for practice. As the parchment is a natural product, each piece is different. It is coarser than our traditional vellum, but is quite handsome nonetheless.
