And within it, the numbers for each window or door are listed - so that you can follow along the story and open the appropriate window which represents the incidents. What a great way to introduce youngsters to great literature!

Start a new tradition by reading this each year. Be sure that you open the last one on Christmas Day itself!

Art Postcard - The Lost Chord

Arthur Sullivan (of the famed Gilbert and Sullivan) composed the music for The Lost Chord as he sat at his brother Fred's beside, during his last days. The words were written by Adelaide A. Proctor. Known for its grandeur and eloquence, The Lost Chord is often represented by the young woman playing the the pipe organ with a choir of angels accompanying her.

Seated one day at the organ,
I was weary and ill at ease,
And my fingers wandered idly
Over the noisy keys;
I know not what I was playing,
Or what I was dreaming then,
But I struck one chord of music,
Like the sound of a great Amen,
Like the sound of a great Amen.

It flooded the crimson twilight,
Like the close of an angel’s psalm,
And it lay on my fevered spirit,
With a touch of infinite calm,

Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax. His special lacquer formula improved the quality of seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom. The house was established at rue des Fosses Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois. J Herbin is the oldest name in ink production in the world!

The Natural History of the Flirt

The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary gives the meaning of the word flirt as 'to play at courtship.' Perhaps some will regard it as a more frivolous past-time, though George Elliot put it rather well 'every man likes to flirt with a pretty girl and every girl likes to be flirted with.'

This little 108-page book measures 10.5 by 13 cm and is loaded with delight from cover to cover. It was first published in 1848. This facsimile reproduction brings the original work to life as it was originally published! The illustrations by Gavarni, Gilbert and Henning are worth the price alone! Three festive designs are die cut in unique crown silhouettes. These magnificently printed collages incorporate images reproduced from antique sheet music, Victorian scraps and Dresdens, Spencerian writing, paper lace and many other antique bits and pieces from the artist's collection.

A luminous folded paper banner heralding the sentiment CELEBRATE is applied to the front of each crown. The back of each of the crowns is printed with an elegant Spencerian presentation certificate that can be filled in to commemorate that very special occasion or achievement. And hand-applied iridescent glitter adds a magical sparkle.

Large Hand-Glittered Die Cut Santa with Crepe Paper Cloak

This large die cut Santa Claus is absolutely gorgeous. Heavily accented with glitter sparkles as real snow, he carries a small tree and a purse full of toys. His cloak is made of crepe paper which covers snowy white batting, accented by tiny golden cords. From head to toe, he measures about 12-1/2 inches, and 4 inches side-to-side.

He hangs from a golden thread and bears a poem by Maymie Rippetoe on reverse:

The pleasures and practicalities of hand lettering as practiced in Victorian times - in the workplace, in school and at home- were aided by Vere Foster's Copy Books. This, the tenth of eighteen titles originally offered, provides wonderful examples with 31 carefully-prepared variations of the alphabet.

Originally published in 1890, it still addresses the fact that

"Writing is almost as important as speaking."

Each page offers the examples with directional arrows on some, as well as lightly-lined areas for your practice. Or, indeed, use this as a unique journal.

Just like the copy books of old, it is paperback and contains 24 pages (measuring 16 by 21 centimeters).
