Hand-Painted Papyrus Portrait #7 - Women and Spirit Doll - Suitable for Framing
More Egypt & Africa
More Artwork
Each of these lovely portraits has been hand painted on real papyrus. The inks and paints are both natural and modern. The artist has added real gold to the metallic gold paint. We love the earthiness of the images and the quality of the artwork for such a reasonable price.
The colorful design is deeply ingrained in the mythology and traditions of this ancient culture. Two women in an interchange of sorts with lots of hieroglyphs and other symbols.
Each painting measures just over 7-1/4 by just over 5-1/8 inches. It might be easily trimmed to fit a standard frame as there is an unpainted border surrounding the image. Artwork like this also looks nice when placed atop a matt and allowed to float freely over the backing.
Papyrus is made from the reeds of the plant growing along side the Nile River. It is prepared by slicing, soaking, pressing and drying - the outcome is a completely organic paper that does not destroy the environment during production! It is thought to be the world's first paper.
This would be marvelous for the background of an art project, but it would look terrific with a simple or ornate frame.
All of the portraits are similar to this one, with a few colors and symbols exchanged. It has been signed by the artist. Each one of these has been produced by the same artist. Please allow for the variation expected in hand made art.

Hand Cut, Embossed and Painted Copper Angel Ornament
More Ornaments
From the lovely Mexican state of Guerrero (which includes the resort of Acapulco and the silversmithing town of Taxco), comes this wonderful hand cut and hammered copper ornament. The image is of a bird woman. The detailed embossing and debossing from the hammering is really special. The image has been painted to accent the hammered likeness.
Each ornament hangs from a copper chain that allows it to be hung as permanent décor. But, it also makes a nice holiday ornament as well.
Each of these is hand made in all aspects, so please expect some variation. The true artisanship of the maker shows in each and every one of these angel ornaments.
The approximate measurements are 2-3/4 inch high by 3-1/4 inches wide. The hammered embossing gives the ornament depth, but it's hard to measure. The hanging chain adds an additional 2 to 2-1/2 inches to the height.

Southwest or Mexican Style Tramp Art Mirror
More Useful Décor
This gorgeous mirror reflects the style of old carved tramp art pieces. The wavy style and the gorgeous earthy tones of brick, olive and mustard create an image of the American southwest or Mexico.
The entire piece measures 24 by 18 inches and has saw-tooth hangers on the back so that you may hang it either horizontally (as shown) or vertically. You might even choose to remove the mirror and add a picture of your own.
Created of resin after an original woodcarving by Jonathan Bastian, this wonderful mirror is stunning in its presentation and very hard to distinguish from wood.
Jonathan Bastian is a self taught wood carver from Berks County, Pennsylvania. His anthology encompasses a wide variety of subjects. He strongly believes in his craft and asserts, "folk art has survived generation to generation, not because it is dictated by a designer's whim, but rather because it embodies the spirit of the folk and the artist."

Plush in their iridescent blue and black finery these two old boys greet each other with a bow and a caw!
These are standard ATCs (2-1/2 by 3-5/8 inches), printed with archival ink on archival fine art paper. At first glance, the image appears to be an original watercolor!

Rare BLUE Plastic Nursery Rhyme Plaque - Hey-Diddle-Diddle
More Vintage Items
Cat & Fiddle Button
This vintage 1969 nursery rhyme wall plaque measures about 7 inches wide by 5-1/2 inches high. The whole story is here:
Hey-diddle-diddle The cat and the fiddle. The cow jumped over the moon; The little dog laughed To see such sport, And the dish ran away with the spoon.
This is old-store stock, unused and in great condition. The poem and the characters are raised from the plaque and are highlighted with golden accents. These were manufactured by Invicta Plastics and have lots of detailed information on the back regarding Invicta's company and locations. Some of these have the mounting tabs on the back that may or may not still be sticky. They were originally used to mount on the wall in a child's room - and would look great in a shadow box frame for a nostalgic touch.
The cow jumping over the moon is the delight of so very many children of all ages! The actual meaning is a bit fuzzy. Some say that it represents the rise of Richard III to power. Others suggest that it represents the constellations in the spring sky. Still others attribute the little poem to a description of Queen Elizabeth I and her good friend Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester. She often referred to him as her lap dog.

Larger than most of our milagros at 9-1/4 inches high, such a striking image will blend nicely with any décor. We have hung one of these in our living room to remind us that the heart is the center of the home and that our home should hold our hearts safe.
The simple yet lovingly detailed heart has been created by traditional tinsmiths who have learned their trade from their family generations before them.
At the widest, the heart measures 5 inches. Milagros are traditionally hung by hammering a nail through the top. A tiny hole has been added at the top of the flame for you to do just that.

Hand-Painted Retablo on a Hand cut Recycled Tin Cross
More Retablos & Shrines
Each one of our beautiful retablo crosses has been hand cut of recycled tin and then hand painted with images of saints, the Virgin Mary or Jesus as well as with supplicants asking for help and blessings from the heavens.
The subjects and saints differ on each of the crosses, but they all resemble the one in the illustration. Colors are antiqued blues, greens and browns and will age over time. Expect the metal to age gracefully over time. In fact, we love that part.
Traditionally retablos are created to thank, entreat or venerate saints, angels, Jesus or Mary. Many are hung in the backs of churches (sometimes with milagros added). Once the supplicant felt that prayers had been answered, the retablo was then removed to the home.
Retablos are often painted by artists as not all the faithful have talent enough to render their prayers visually. Most retablo art is somewhat primitive and was once considered outsider art.
With help from Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and their contemporaries, retablo art has become quite collectable in its own right. Seeking to preserve Mexican and other Latin American traditions, Kahlo and Rivera began collecting these wonderful spiritual treasures in the last century.
The traditional manner for hanging such retablos is with with a single simple nail hammered through the top of the tin right into the wall. Because it is made of tin rather than paper, it will stand the test of time even in this manner.
The cross measures 13 inches high by 9-1/2 inches wide.

What an interesting piece of folk art this is! Made of tin, in the Mexican tradition, this mirror features a likeness of Frida Kahlo as an angel. Her wings are made of hands outstretched, yet protecting her at once. Her bodice is three-dimensional and features a bustier as typical of her own paintings. As a piece of wall artwork, this would be quite attractive. However, her skirt opens and reveals a mirror. The symbolism is worthy of Frida herself!
It is designed with a built-in easel for standing on a table or shelf and with a hanging loop for displaying on a wall. The design is such that the mirror remains closed while displayed until you open it.

Distressed Leather Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help
More Icons, Milagros & Amulets
Our Lady of Perpetual Help is one of the many titles given to the Blessed Virgin Mary. A Byzantine icon named Our Lady of Perpetual Help was created sometime between the 13th and 15th centuries (there has been much controversy over the exact date). The original icon has been in Rome since at least the late 15th century, but is truly in the style of an Icon of the Eastern Orthodox Church. She is known in the Orthodox iconography as the Theotokos of the Passion. Catholics have long revered this image as representative of the ability of Mary to intercede with their prayers to Jesus Christ, her son, pictured with her in the icon.
This popular image has been much copied and reproduced, as it has been here. The image has been printed on the distressed leather and then accented by hand with golden ink or paint, highlighting the image to create a mini masterpiece! The icon measures 3-1/4 inches by 5 inches and the hanging leather adds approximately an additional 3-1/4 inches in height.

Plastic Nursery Rhyme Plaque - See Saw Margery Daw
This vintage 1969 nursery rhyme wall plaque measures about 8 inches wide by 5-3/4 inches high. There is a sweet picture of a girl and a boy on a teeter-totter made of a log and plank, accompanied by a bunny and some birds. It is made of light blue hard plastic and includes the Margery Daw Nursery Rhyme:
See saw Margery Daw, Jacky shall have a new master; He shall have but a penny a day, Because he can't work any faster.
In researching the meaning of this rhyme, we have found that it probably wasn't meant for children in the first place. It was most likely a worker's rhyme used by men sawing large logs of wood using two-handled saws - to help them keep time. It's origin appears to be in the 18th century and Margery was a poor country name, and Daw meant an untidy person. Working rhymes generally contained references to wages and eventually made their way into children's lives through their working fathers - just as the see-saw did!

Frameable Note Card - Matted Print Ready for framing: Symmetry of Man by Leonardo da Vinci
More Leonardo da Vinci
Vitruvian Man Charm
This famous print, Symmetry of Man or alternatively, Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci has been professionally matted and transformed into a frameable note card. It will fit any standard 5 by 7 inch frame. The card is blank inside, so you can add your own message. Each comes with a white acid free, beveled edge mat that has been professionally cut. Each card is sealed in a protective sleeve that you remove before sending it in the accompanying envelope.
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci is the archetype of the Renaissance man: he is best known as an artist and inventor, but also shone as a scientist, mathematician, engineer, anatomist, architect, botanist, musician and writer. In fact, in art, he was a portraitist, skilled in illustration, still life and landscapes, as well as sculpture in many media.
This is one of his best known drawings wrought in pen on paper in Florence around 1490. It features the anatomy of a man in symmetry (if symmetry even exists!). This image has been prominent on many items for years, even appearing on the Euro.
Now you have a card that becomes a present, too! Such a striking print as this might cost much more on its own!

Plastic Nursery Rhyme Plaque - Jack & Jill in Blue
This vintage 1969 nursery rhyme wall plaque from Invicta measures about 8 inches wide by 5-3/4 inches high. Jill and Jack are running with their pail as a couple of bunnies and a bird look on. It is made of light blue hard plastic and includes the Jack and Jill Nursery Rhyme:
Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water; Jack fell down and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after.
There are so many sources of origin claimed for the Jack and Jill rhyme, that it is hard to know which is true. Many nursery rhymes began as satirical poems regarding the politics of the day. Still others were meant tell the stories of history to children, modified to help soften the harsher news.
Some say that Jack and Jill is the story of the beheading of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. Others insist that it was modeled after a fairy tale about 2 childhood friends in Norway. And still another associates it with the British monetary unit, gill, and the jackpot that ensued for the country.

There are lots of copies of this same image made today, but these are original to the 3D era of the mid-20th century. Marked on the back is:
