We love the Adirondack cabin look and that's where we conjured the idea of a pinecone ornament or wall décor kit!
Although these were originally designed for Christmas, we think they make lovely rustic accents if you choose to add your own photograph (instead of a Santa) or your own printed words. You might also choose to use a wood-burning tool to enhance your project.
We've put together the instructions and almost everything you need to make an old-fashioned ornament or a little wall hanging.

We love old stuff like this little family of ducks. Even if these little guys were made today, they just wouldn't have that old-fashioned look to them.
Each set contains a larger Mama duck with her three little ducklings following behind. The Mom measures about 1-1/2 inch long (including her beak) and the babies are a bit smaller. How cute these would be with your little dolls or bears or even in a putz under a feather tree!

Hand Carved Wooden Branch Slide for Toggle Shawl or Book Closure

We bought these some time ago from a yarn shop that was closing. She came upon the artisan who made these as she was searching for alpaca an llama woolen specialty yarns in South America.
Each slide features a Y at one end and a point at the other, allowing it to slide through your scarf or shawl easily and then stop to hold it in position. We think they'd make great book closures, too!
The best part about these is the smoothness - they are so smooth to the touch that they will not snag your knitting or other fibers.
Of course everyone of these is different. Some are lighter than others and some are larger, due to the natural materials and the handmade nature of the slides.
The shortest is 5 inches. The longest is not quite 7 inches. Please let us choose one for you.

These were found amongst a large craft grouping at an estate and are from the 1980s or earlier
They are also lots of fun to use in projects. Because of their unique shape, you might be able to use them to position things in your assemblages. They are made of steel wire, so they may eventually rust. They have not so far. These are only from the the 1980s - but that makes them officially vintage.
Each one is different because these are made of natural bamboo, as you can see in our photograph. Some are darker, wider, lighter. But all are about 2-1/8 to 2-1/4 inches in diameter.

We had these wonderfully elaborately detailed crowns created for us! And were we ever delighted when we received them! The crown was created from vintage illustrations of regal crowns. They are laser cut from 1/8 inch thick Baltic birch and then laser cut. The sides are natural wood color and the back has been painted black.
Wonderful for jewelry, shrines, art dolls and all kinds of artwork, you'll find you'll need a lot of these. They are lightweight and might even be used for earrings!
We're calling this our Santos crown as we think it absolutely perfect for you mini shrines and saints, statues and other holy images. It, of course, would befit royalty as well.

Clothespins like these are so much nicer than the newer clip-type ones. Just hang your laundry and slip the pin over the clothesline. These are in various stages of aging. Some have a great smooth patina; others have been bleached in the sun. Each package contains a mixture similar to the illustration.
These standard size pins measure 3-3/4 inches high by about 1/2 inch in diameter. They are great for their original intention, or place them in a vintage jar and display them in your laundry or kitchen. They are also lovely when wrapped with special ribbon, cording or yarn and displayed in a vintage basket.

She is pretty and happy and each one is different because they are hand-made. Our lovely vintage-style cornice is carved in a primitive style and finished in a vintage-style crackled patina. She is also great for altering or repainting.
Although they are all about the same, each one is slightly different because they are hand carved and painted.
She measures 10-3/4 inches from wingtip to wingtip and almost 3-1/2 inches high. the profile is just about 5/8 inch. There is a sawtooth hanger on the back that is removable.

These sweet little Santa's helpers are bound to be headed for a putz under your tiny Christmas tree. Vintage old-store stock, probably from the 1940s to 1950s, these wooden figures represent the man himself, Santa Claus. He is made entirely of wood and each little ornament has been hand painted, so please allow for artistic variation.
Measuring in at just over 1-1/8 inch high, his arm span is just over 3/4 inch. The base is about 3/8 inch in diameter. The base is hollow, which helps him to stand up quite well.

Vintage Red Wood Pulp Squares - Package of 10 Pieces

We found these squares in the recesses of an old fashioned craft and convenience store in Western Pennsylvania some time ago. These were used in a variety of applications, according to the store clerk who had worked behind the wooden counter almost the entire time the store was open. However, she could not remember what any of those applications were. So, maybe you can find your own uses.
A customer of ours told us that she used these years ago to make artificial flowers - especially roses by bending and molding them!
These 3-1/4 inch square pieces of wood-pulp fiber are not really paper, nor are they fabric. They have a spongy feel and are quite strong, but can be torn if manipulated too harshly. Every one of these is red, but some show signs of aging and fading. Others have a sandy feel to part of them. But, they are a lot of fun.
For one thing, the pulp is flexible. It feels a bit spongy and is malleable and can be stretched gently around spherical shapes. Some glues darken the pulp, so be careful and experiment before making a large commitment in using these. The color may come off on your hands, and it may not...so we think that has something to do with the weather. So, be careful when using these.
We promise that you'll be intrigued as much as we were!

When we first found these, we thought they had once been buttons. Now, maybe you could make buttons from them. However, these lovely pieces have an origin sticker on the back and no semblance of any button finding.
Each of these round pieces is flat backed and hand painted with stripes resembling bamboo plants and a lovely exotic redbird. They are 1-1/4 inch in diameter and each is similar to the next, but there is some variation due to the hand painting. The domed top is lacquered for wear, but the back has been left in its natural state.

More Unique Embellishments
Some are old, some vintage and some pretty new - but see what you can buy with these wooden nickels! Once given to customers in lieu of coupons, these were a clever form of advertising - many people wanted to keep them as souvenirs, so the merchant rarely had to cash them in! And, if someone did us one, it could be given to yet another customer - not like today's throw-away coupons.
First issued in the 1930s, these were introduced when banks were failing as a promissory note of sorts. Most had expiration dates - some even expiration times. So, the phrase "Don't take any wooden nickels" was warning the buyer to beware of soon-to-expire change s/he might receive! Later, they were used as commemoratives for celebrations, and as coupons.
What a great idea for show-and-tell at any age!

Just put these elegant sticks in a plain glass vase and you'll have an chic and natural table accent. Better yet, use them in book bindings or as each end of a scroll. Of course, because they are natural bamboo, no two will ever be alike, but in the bunches of ten, we've been careful to match sizes. Each is about 12 inches long and about 1/2 inch in diameter.
You might even want to consider carving your own reed pen or calame from these very straight stalks! Or, make an Egyptian-themed book from papyrus and bind it with bamboo.

Large Handmade Colonial Wooden Nicho in Green & Purple

It is hard to describe this wonderful Mexican Colonial Style Nicho or Frames as anything other than stunning. It is simply made of rough wood in the colonial Mexican style. Atop each one is a concha that has been accented with traditional Mexican folk-art painting to highlight the expertly cut shape.
The frame is hand-crafted by Mexican Artisans in the tradition of the ages old craft of woodworking and hand painting. Each of these wonderful frames or nichos are created from native wood then hand painted. No two are alike although the colors and the folk-art painting are similar. Yours will be unique in that it is a fine piece of craftsmanship and painting. The colors are deep earth tones - an eggplant purple and deep green accented with golden and darkened eggshell painting (typical to the colonial style).
Our wooden nicho measures 15 inches high (including the decorative concha at the top) and 8 inches wide. The recessed niche can hold a small Santo or saint statue, a photograph or portrait of a loved one, or can house your mementos and special keepsakes. You might also consider adding a mirror inside as a backing.
The inside niche measures 11 inches high by about 5-1/2 inches wide and is 2 inches deep allowing room to create a diorama if you like. The inner niche remains open, allowing you to change your display easily. This is the traditional colonial style.
We have only a few in this color group and each is different, making yours unique. The colors are all similar and compliment each other. These are truly a special find and we are no longer able to acquire these.
Because these frames are handmade, please let us choose one for you. Each is painted in the same manner, so it will be quite similar.

Each of our vintage spools found itself discarded from a weaving factory. These are quite old as the new ones are plastic, composition or all metal. Small Hand-Carved Alebrijes Dog
More Dogs
Alebrijes are created in Oaxacan region of Mexico and have been for years! The carvings have been created by the same families, with the traditions and techniques passed down from generation to generation for decades.
The pieces are lightweight because they are carved from copal - a soft wood that is prevalent on the Mexican landscape. Pieces are then painted in bright colors and patterns evocative of the lively colors traditionally associated with Mexican homes and artwork. The carvers feel that the figures will bring the owners good luck!
Our little dogs are hand-carved and decorated in bright shades of red with black spots. They are similar to the two pictured but might be sitting or standing in any position. We just love their comical expressions!
All of the dogs are similar in size - but will vary depending on the tail position. From snout to tail they vary from 3-1/2 inches to 5-1/2 inches and from ground to ear or tail (whichever is higher), they measure from 2-3/4 inches to 4 inches high.

Hand Carved Wooden Dog
This magical little perro is hand-carved of wood and then expertly painted in Mexico by traditional Oaxacan artisans. The detail is tremendous on each of our dogs. Even the little seat is painted sweetly. Each is signed by the artist as well (sometimes this is hidden in the carving, so look carefully!). The dogs each measure about 3 inches high by 2-1/2 inches wide - maybe a little more for the tails!
Because each is made by hand in Oaxaca, Mexico, your puppy will be entirely unique. Colors, painting and facial expressions differ. And each little doggie is holding something - like a bottle, a horn or other instrument.! So please let us choose one for you.
Sometimes the tail is wrapped separately (the little fellow holds it between his arms), so that they don't break. It should be relatively easy to place the tail properly. So, please unwrap your dog with care.

These simple and stark crosses are made by hand from genuine palm fronds in the traditional manner. Each has been dried and lacquered so it should last for years. This preservative retards spoilage but allows the palm to still feel natural. We have had one of these for years with little or no cracking or change.

Rustic Birch Bark Frame
Camping in the Adirondacks, rustic fires and ghost stories all come to mind with this striking frame made of birch bark. The opening measures 3-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches and holds a standard photograph easily. We're showing the frame with a portrait of our wonder cat, Omar, in his youth (a few pounds earlier than today).
The frame features hand-stitched accents made with waxed cord in the tradition of Adirondack crafts. Opposite corners are embellished by pieces of wood pinecones and striped wood accents.

For hundreds of years, the Otomi Indians harvested the bark of naturally fallen fig and mulberry trees. They then washed it in the streams and then boil the bark in lime water. Then, the Indians beat the damp, pliable fibers and lay them out in the sun to dry.
This beautiful, primitive paper has an unsurpassed texture. You can certainly use it to make and bind books and for drawing, painting, and collage. It is especially striking when painted with opaque paints, such as gouache.

Mini Pine Cones
For your rustic projects, this slice of wood is just perfect! Add a few mini pinecones and a vintage holiday scrap picture and you'll have a treasure to behold. You can make this little plaque hangable by adding a screw eye to the top, or by carving or drilling a hole in the back. But, our favorite way to hang it is to staple a piece of leather or felt on the back to create a hanging loop. We saw this technique used on some older ornaments and just love the look!
Each slice is similar to the illustration, but because these are cut from natural wood branches, of course each will differ slightly in the size and the look. We just love the bark around the plaque. The average size is about 5-3/4 inches by 2-1/4 inches by 1/4 inch thick. So please allow for some variation.

Small Unfinished Wooden Altar Nicho
There is a lot of detail on this little altar, even though it measures only 3 inches high by 3-7/8 inches wide! There are spindles on either side that have been turned with lovely ornamentation. The entire depth is 1-3/8 inch, and the inner depth is about 3/8 inch.

Hand carved woodblocks have been the traditional means of printing in Nepal for centuries. Even today, prayer books in Himalayan Buddhist monasteries are printed from such blocks.
Handheld tools are carefully used to cut the designs out of "sisau", a type of cedar. Lokta paper handmade from the bark of the Daphne tree is traditionally harvested so that the tree may regenerate.
To print, simply press your woodblock onto the inkpad provided (or one of your own). Then on a padded surface (for example on a pile of newspapers or several layers of cloth), place a piece of lokta paper and firmly press the woodblock. Gently rock the block in all directions to achieve a clear print.
A description of the hearts and milagros accompanies the set, too.

Small Burl Display Pedestal
Originally produced as netsuke stands, these sweet little burl wood display pedestals are expertly formed from natural wood. Burls are actually growth abnormalities (aka knots) gone right. A small burl was selected and carved, sanded and polished to make this our stand. It measures about 2 inches in diameter and stands about 4/5 inch high.
We love these as additions to shrines, memory boxes and shadow boxes. They also make perfect little end tables for dollhouses!

We had these wonderfully elaborately detailed gravestone replicas created for us! Although they are great for Hallowe'en, we also love them for their deserted feel. The are made from photographs of authentic gravestones in an almost abandoned cemetery in Colorado.
The shadows and angle of the trompe-d'oeuil photograph make this component absolutely stunning. And the laser cutting is so precise that the figure the stone seems as though the goddess herself is real.

They are laser cut from 1/8 inch thick Baltic birch and then laser cut. The sides are natural wood color and the back has been painted black.

We've seen kits to make hand fans before, but they already had the paper attached - and it wasn't always the type of paper we wanted to use. Now you can make your own hand fan with these great sticks made of bamboo! And, you can make them out of just about anything that you can glue or sew to wood.
This hinged set of 10 inner sticks plus the two larger outer sticks were designed for the millinery trade to mount lace for Victorian-style fashion or even for display. These are designed for a 6-inch wide fabric, lace or paper (rice paper is especially nice and usually arrives on a roll - you might even choose to use wallpaper!
The 12 sticks pivot from the bottom so that you can fold your fan closed. The pivot is a pin with a loop and ring on one side for attaching the fan or for carrying.
