The Gare d'Orsay served variously as a French station, a postal
center for sending packages to prisoners of war during World War
II, then, again as a station welcoming home those same prisoners
after the Liberation. It was a movie set, a hotel and then scheduled to
be demolished. With a government decree, it soon found support
amongst politicians and was declared an historic landmark.
