Gilbert and George are two modern artists who met in the 1960s and have worked together pretty much ever since. Their artwork is at once surreal and real and representative of London's East End art scene. Or, perhaps, they defined the scene. They are really Gilbert Proesch and George Passmore and work together as a duo, although it cannot be confirmed that they are partners.
They are quite prolific and much of their art has to do with death and doom and extremes. This piece is entitled DEAD and features the artists in the lower right. We're not quite sure what is dead or if it is a dream. Such is the surreal, is it not? or, is it?
