Saint Dymphna was the daughter of a pagan Irish chieftain and a Christian woman. She suffered greatly during her childhood and young adulthood. She dedicated her life to God at a young age. Her traumatic family life (she was murdered by her father) has made her a sympathetic patron of those with family problems, mental illness and other nervous disorders and consequently of psychotherapists, psychiatrists and analysts.
The front holds a detailed image of Saint Dymphna holding a lily and includes her name:
On the back is a devotion, or prayer, that reads:
Oh St. Dymphna
Patroness of the nervous
and mental illnesses,
grant that, through
prayer, I may be pure
in mind and soul.
Our token has been distressed so that it has an antiquey feel to it, as though it has weathered many an emotional storm. It measures 1-1/8 inch in diameter. Made of modern pewter, it should last a long time.
