Attributable in part to Brazil, Spain and Argentina, and dating back to the 19th century, the tango is generally considered to be based on a folk dance of Argentina called milonga. This was a dance fitted to an old Spanish song that claims Moorish and Arabic ancestry as well as Spanish.
Introduced into North America in the early part of this century, the tango achieved immediate popularity which has lasted up to the present day.
