Saint Barbara is usually depicted with a chalice and sometimes with a sword. She is well known as a martyr of the 4th century. However, the Catholic Church could not substantiate her legend and she was removed as a saint in 1969.
Despite this, she still has quite a following in the modern world as the patron saint and protector of the military and those who work with explosives. Her father actually martyred her as he was a non-believer. According to legend, he was struck down by lightning right after killing Barbara. The lightning associates easily with armed warfare and explosives.
