DESCRIPTION

St Maximilian Kolbe is known as the patron saint of drug addicts, alcoholics, all types of addictions as well as prisoners.

As a child, he had a vision of Virgin Mary (shown on the back of the medal). She came to him holding two crowns; a white one symbolizing that he would persevere in purity and a red one symbolizing that he would become a martyr. She asked if he would be willing to accept either, to which he replied he would accept both.

During the Nazi invasion of Poland, he opened a temporary hospital to aid those in need. When his town was taken, he was captured and sent to prison. Three months later he was released, but refused to sign a letter to recognize himself as a German citizen, despite his German ancestry. He continued his work providing aid to refugees, including hiding as many as 2,000 Jewish citizens from persecution.

On February 17, 1941 he was arrested by the German Gestapo and eventually was sent to Auschwitz. At the end of his second month of internment, men were chosen to face death by starvation to ward off escape attempts. Although not chosen, Kolbe volunteered to replace a man with a family. After two weeks of starvation and dehydration, Kolbe, the only man left of the group, was given an injection. The stories claim that he raised his left hand and calmly awaited death.
