Saint Gemma was the oldest daughter of a poor pharmacist. Her mother died when she was only 7 years old. Her father died when she was 18. She was then responsible for and took care of her seven brothers and sisters. She was quite sickly and had so many duties at home, that she never completed her education.

She wanted to join a religious order, but was rejected over and again due to her poor health. After much prayer, she was cured in her 20s of spinal meningitis. She was canonized in 1940.
