Saint Lazarus has long been known as the Patron Saint of the Sick, particularly of those sick with leprosy. He has represented the poor and the sick in literature, both religious and secular.
He is sometimes pictured walking with crutches and in the presence of a dog or dogs who were known to lick his wounds and protect him. Perhaps these were the first therapy dogs. There are quite a few animal shelters named for Saint Lazarus.
Our medal is made of silvery metal in Italy.
