Master of collage and absurdity, Max Ernst created this stunning self-portrait in 1920. It is a photo collage with ink and gouache. Hardly easy to interpret, many images come to mind. We were quite taken with his resolute but piercing stare at once in harmony and discord with the addition of the ephemeral image atop the photo. Consider this as in inspiration for future collage and its insistence on connecting to the past.
