St Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) Medal

Honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, Mother Teresa has become an icon of selflessness in the modern world.

She was born in 1910 as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Macedonia. At 18 she joined the Sisters of Loreto and began her work in India. She was so distressed at the poverty and helplessness of the poor, that eventually she began her work among them, starting at first an open air school, and later, her own order, "The Missionaries of Charity." Members of her community are now continuing her work in over 40 countries.
