Vintage 1930s Tax Token from the State of Washington

Check out this neat little token!

This token was used and issued in the state of Washington, although a number of other states also used similar tokens. From our research, it seems that this token would have come from the 1930s during the depression era.

The idea behind the token was that on small purchases, then the consumer would not be overcharged on tax. For example, on a 10 cent purchase with a 2% tax rate, the tax owed would be much less than 1 cent. So, by using the token or tokens, the customer would not have to round up to the nearest penny and thus paying too much.

This aluminum token is the same on both sides.
