Originally designed as a shadowbox or diorama, the vignette features Day of the Dead calaveras - handmade by traditional artisans.  

The box is wooden - painted in an almost festive style with the front and top made of glass to protect the scene inside.

Now what do you think the story is? Such dioramas were created from memories that represent real events.

Here we see a calavera (skeleton) sitting upon a coffin (maybe not yet ready for the grave. The wreath aside may indicate that this was a current funeral. Serenaded by a mariachi and perhaps the widow dressed in mourning clothes - and even a little calavera perro. Family? Spirits?

Please be careful - too much shaking and moving can dislodge the figures. (Sometimes that's even better!)
