For those of us who grew up in the Pittsburgh, PA area, Heinz pickles (and ketchup) are the only brand we buy! Originally introduced at the 1939 World's Fair in New York City, pins such as these are still available. But, ours is definitely old. We can't promise that it's one of the originals, but it is at the newest from the 1950s.
You'll secure the pin with the traditional brass safety pin integrated in the back. The pickle measures 1-1/4 inch long by 3/8 inch wide and the profile is just about 1/4 inch.
The pickle pins were such a popular advertising promotion that they were also offered as a free remembrance to visitors on tour of the Beaux Arts style Heinz factory on the North Side of Pittsburgh. Tours are no longer available and pickles have not been produced there for years. The Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh's Strip District still offers these pins to visitors for 50¢ apiece.
The newer pins are a much brighter green than this wonderful older one.
